She’s devoted to her work. He’s not ready for love. When a blinding dust storm on a remote planet traps them together, will hostility turn to passion?
Astrogeologist Breeze O’Day won’t trade her perilous career for anything. Taking a research job on a faraway alien world to escape her abusive ex-husband, she can’t wait to bring her findings back home and announce a game-changing discovery. But when her ship is swept up in a catastrophic sandstorm, her gratitude at being plucked from certain death quickly sours when she realizes her savior is a rude, ill-mannered brute.
If Tack Grayson wanted company, he wouldn’t have moved to the middle of nowhere. Still suffering from PTSD after killing a shapeshifter disguised as his wife, the furloughed cyborg soldier’s instincts compel him to rescue the passenger of a crashed hovercraft. But as he forces himself to care for the injured and strong-willed woman, his gruff exterior crumbles as unexpected attractions ignite.
After Breeze recruits her host’s help in securing her valuable data, she struggles to admit that her initial unease has morphed into undeniable chemistry. But as Tack’s haunting past catches up to him, he fears giving into his feelings will only rope the gorgeous scientist into his own misery.
With trouble on the horizon, will this star-crossed pair forge a path to happiness?

The Hero:Tack - he was living on a desert planet called Sajave along with Bandit, the dog who stowed away on his spaceship. He even applied for permanent homestead on the planet. He spends his days brewing beer and going on long walks when the dust devils weren’t scouring the land. Tack was a member of the C Force, the “most elite intelligence and fighting force in the galaxy”. Though he was on mental health leave for a year due to personal trauma and PTSD because he was forced to kill his wife in the line of duty. He didn’t trust himself to go back to work, he considered himself a danger because he was twitchy and paranoid.
The heroine:Breeze - she is an astro geologist and works for Geo-Tech on the planet Sajave (named for the Sahara and Mojave desserts on Earth). She moved to the planet to escape her abusive husband and she still had problems when men invaded her personal space, even if they were friends. The government paid Geo-Tech to study the sand to see what could be done about it to make the planet more habitable. Breeze recently had a breakthrough of epic proportions, though wasn’t making it known until she had all the data to back up her findings. Her discovery would lead her to fame in scientific circles, which could also be dangerous for her, so she still hadn’t decided what to do.
The Story: Tack had discovered his wife was a shapeshifter and had been forced to kill her, though it really screwed with his head. He didn’t know if the woman he fell in love with was killed and taken over by a monster or if she had really been a monster in disguise all along. He didn’t trust his own judgement anymore. He had no neighbors and lived hundreds of miles from the nearest city. Breeze was in a transport to the eastern Geo-Tech office in Stadt, when a sandstorm hit as she was napping, and she had veered way off course. Breeze ends up on Tack’s property and he rescues her from the storm.
I liked these two characters, and the storyline was really interesting. Breeze’s discovery was not at all what I expected and really changed things up. Though it did feel like it ended with a lot of things still unresolved. I realize that some of it is going to be ongoing storylines, but I do wish more would have happened and been resolved in this book. It just felt a bit unfinished.
I really enjoyed this new cyborg series opener. It follows Tack, a grumpy loner cyborg, living alone in the middle of the desert, trying to beat the demons of his past. Breeze O'day is an astrogeologist researching the sand on this desert planet when she mysteriously crashes out in the middle of nowhere, where only Tack can rescue her. With a monsterous sand storm keeping them trapped together in Tack's little house, they have to confront their pasts and their growing attraction to each other.
Breeze and Tack both are a little bit older characters and they both have traumatic events in their recent pasts. Breeze is in hiding from her very violent abusive ex-husband. While Tack is recovering from his last mission, which had dire personal consequences. Neither are good at interacting with others. After a bumpy beginning Breeze and Tack peel back each others layers a little to see the real person underneath.
This was sweet and sexy. Both are nursing some fragile hearts that are trying to heal. As Breeze and Tack start to act on their attraction and building a good foundation of trust, they get rocked by someone nefarious trying to kill one and frame the other. Only if they can see through the betrayal of others will they be able to make it through alive. Wonderful, entertaining story with good action, and sweet heat. I'm looking forward to the next installment with Axel that will continue the overarching storyline.
Even though this is an ARC review, I will always shoot you straight. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The first in a new series set on a desert planet, the story gets off to high-powered start with a massive stand storm throwing together a cyborg suffering from PTSD and a scientist hiding from an abusive ex. The characters are well drawn and believable, their relationship develops quickly but believable when confined together for days by the storm. Mystery, action, steam, and a dog!
Gruff and hot cyborg ahead! I loved reading Tack and Breeze's story. These two are damaged goods, but aren't we all? Luckily, they are absolutely perfect for each other. While Breeze has a total "don't touch me" aura, Tack is a gruff, standoffish hermit who just happens to have a tender caring heart buried beneath the surface. You're going to enjoy this one.
A mysterious swirling sand covers an alien world and to this harsh environment come a few hardy human colonists, a secretive geologist to study the sands, and a reclusive cyborg needing the solace of isolation to get over a horrendous betrayal and act that followed it. Cara Bristol launched a new series of Cyborg Romances with Blown Away and I was on high alert until I had the chance to devour it in one sitting.
Tack fought in the military’s special ops cyborg unit until he discovered that an alien enemy had infiltrated his own home and used its shapeshifting ability to look like his human wife Sarah and attack powerful human dignitaries when they went to high profile events together. His feelings of guilt and that he’s inadequate for not catching on sooner have overwhelmed him so he takes a leave of absence. He isolates himself on a newly opened world with few good points- plenty of water and breathable atmosphere. Sand covers the world and flows everywhere, but is lethal when pushed by the wind into a storm. His isolation is invaded and he finds that she is the very person who can put his broken soul back together. Breeze is a scientist studying the phenomena of the alien sand and its odd properties. She has a theory and the experiments to back it up that promises to be an amazing and colossal game-changing scientific find. Her dilemma is that by presenting her find she might very well be painting a red target on her back since she came to this isolated world not simply to work, but to hide. Who knew the cranky cyborg who rescues her from a crash during a sandstorm turns out to be the only person she can trust to keep her alive long enough to get the important data to those who need to know.
Once again, Cara Bristol goes above and beyond to deliver a splendid alien setting, intriguing plot, and characters I could root for from the get-go. They both came with deep, painful past situations and this makes them ideal for helping each other open up and start to heal. Their chemistry was strong even when they were not happy to be stuck together, but it was fun to see them unsnarl it all. I had my suspicious about certain events and was happily proved right later. The surprise of Breeze’s findings was so cool. I can’t wait to see what comes next not just for Breeze and Tack, but for the future couples who will help continue the story. The introduction of Tack’s cyborg buddy and the new scientist coming to help Breeze with the sand study are already giving off plenty of sparks.
All in all, it was a fab start and did the job of establishing the world of the series and getting me excited for what comes next. Those who enjoy sci-fi romance with a good amount of sci-fi plot development and spice hot romance should not hesitate to jump in on the ground floor of this new cyborg sci-fi romance series.
I rec'd an eARC from the author to read in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free advanced reader/review copy of this book from the author through Booksprout.co.
This book comes out on April 18th. If you like science fiction romance with cyborgs, you'll want to get this one. The Cyborg Force series starts great in book 1, Blown Away. I suspect this will be a very enjoyable series. The setting for this book is on the planet Sajave. It's a very sandy planet, prone to windstorms. Breeze is a 45 year old astrogeologist about to make a huge discovery. Tack is a cyborg with C-Force. He's on furlough after his last job. He lives with his dog, Bandit, in the middle of nowhere. Both Breeze and Tack carry some baggage in their lives but, they may just help each other move forward in life. There is a twist towards the end. I am vague with my review because I don't want to spoil anything.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series, Gale Force.
This is a fantastic Sci-Fi Cyborg romance & a splendid start to a new series. The world building is excellent with good scene descriptions and it has an interesting, well-paced plot filled with some very unusual situations. The characters (a female scientist, Breeze) & (a very grumpy C-Force cyborg, Tack accompanied by his protective dog, Bandit) are both emotional damaged individuals but are still very likable. There is: a sandy wind-swept planet (Sajave), twists & turns, drama, action, adventure, intrigue, suspense, secrets, deceit, betrayal, devastating memories, trust issues, danger, threats, devious plans, protectiveness, determination, contentment, love, some steam & a satisfying conclusion for this couple with a interesting epilogue that could be paving the way for the next book in the series.
Cara Bristol has given us another fantastic romance & a splendid start to a new series. This Sci-Fi Cyborg world is excellent with great world building, a fast paced storyline filled with some very unusual scene descriptions. A desolate sand filled world called Sajave, full of rippling sand dunes, storms and wind. The plot is full of drama, action, adventure, including lots of twists & turns, suspense, betrayal, secrets, danger, instant love, some steamy action including satisfying conclusion. The characters Breeze & C-Force cyborg Tack are both suffering severe emotional damage but both are interesting and likable. Tack, Breeze, and his dog, Bandit make this couple a great beginning for this new series. Cara has also included an epilogue that is paving the way for the couple in the next book in the series.
I liked the overall story arc, but had some issues with the female lead, Breeze. So, it took me a while to finish the book. I continued reading for a along time...picking it up, when I had finished other books to read a little more and to put it back down again.
I would like to know how the story continues, but having read the blurb for the next book, I'm not sure, then I'm going to pick up the next one. Second chances at love with the same characters aren't for me.
After reading the novella prequel to this book, Stone Cold Cyborg, I was so excited to dive in to the cyborg world again! Especially since the prequel was closed door, and I needed some steam this time. Cara Bristol definitely delivered in that department, as well as developing the cyborg world further and taking the reader on a journey to another fascinating planet. In the prequel, there is forced proximity on a ship. In this book, we get one even better - if you think snowbound in a cabin together is hot, then you'll love stuck in a bunker in the middle of a sandstorm. Don't look at me like that, it's amazing. Maybe even better than the one bed trope...maybe.
After being forced to kill his wife, who may or may not have been an alien in disguise for their entire marriage, Tack Grayson is taking a well-deserved furlough as he contemplates what he wants to do with his life. After becoming a cyborg over twenty years ago, he had dedicated his life to saving others. But he couldn't even save the woman he loved. Hunkering down in the middle of a planet covered in sand, hundreds of miles away from the nearest settlement, he is certain he will find the solitude he so desperately needs. Of course, that solitude is swiftly shattered when a sandstorm hits, and he finds a transport buried in the sand with an unconscious woman inside. Breeze O'Day is on the verge of a scientific breakthrough when her transport malfunctions, stranding her in the middle of nowhere while a sandstorm rages on. Soon she finds herself being nursed back to health by a stranger, a cyborg accompanied by his cuddly dog, and despite her past history with men, she wants to trust him. Strangely, she is able to stand his close presence longer than most, and soon their initial attraction heats into an inferno. However, they both know things must come to an end. And Breeze is hiding secrets, one of which could lead to her death if it got out.
With two MCs who have past trauma, you know you're going to get some angst and emotions. I was enthralled from the very start of the book, and I couldn't put it down as I sped through the pages. Their connection to each other felt like a slow burn even though it wasn't, because they were so set on staying away from each other...at first. But as with all romance where there is forced proximity, that swiftly becomes a plan that is dead in the water. Instead, they find a bond with each other. Tack is naturally prone to protect, especially after his time with C-Force, and Breeze needs a man who can show her that she can be safe again. He can protect her. She has done a great job of protecting herself, of course, but sometimes it's okay to rely on others. They were a great couple, and I wish the book had been even longer so we could spend more time with them.
I'm excited to read more in this series - cyborg men just have a quality about them that really excites me...perhaps because they are so strong. And the muscles. The muscles don't hurt.
**I received a free copy from the author and this is my honest review.**
Blown Away is the first book in the Cyborg Force series. Breeze might have made a scientific discovery of a lifetime, but she gets caught up in a sand storm on her way to more experiments. Tack wants nothing to do with anyone, but when Breeze lands on his property, he vows to keep her safe. As they open up to each other, they can’t deny their attraction, but can they learn to fully trust each other before the danger catches up to Breeze?
Oh my goodness, I am just thrilled to be back with Ms. Bristol’s cyborgs! Tack and Breeze captured my attention right from the very beginning, and I loved their journey to love from first grumpy meeting, through the danger, and right to the very end where I’m already dying to learn more about this series! Breeze is a survivor, a little warrior in her own right, and constantly chooses to do what’s right, not what’s easy. She doesn’t trust easily, but I loved the connection she felt to Tack. One who can’t trust his own judgement, or other people, Tack only has his dog for company, but I love how he slowly opens up to potential with Breeze. I loved all of their interactions, I loved their passion and connection, and I loved all of the danger they faced. I think one aspect that was really cool about this book is Ms. Bristol’s imagination coming to life through the new environment! And I also liked that while this couple’s relationship is solid by the end of the book, there’s still more to the mystery! I’m excited to see where this series is going to go next!
Captivating read, great character and amazing well written plot
I do not want to spoil this wonderful read for others as this book is simply amazing and as the start of a new series, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and know that you will love every moment of this book and will find yourself like me unable to put the book down until I reached the end of the book.
Breeze O’Day had been give the assignment she had always wanted and it was simply unbelievable the way in which she finds herself becoming caught in a terrible storm and is unfortunate enough to crash her vehicle and is stranded until she is rescued.
Tack Grayson is an unsociable individual and coming across a stranded Breeze did not make his day especially as she was very opinionated and drove him crazy and he did not need the aggravation. The fact that they are also as different as night and day and irritate the hell out of each other does not endear him to her either,
I assure you that like me you will come to appreciate both of these characters immensely and that like me you will be totally blown away by this book it is a simply wonderful read.
I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
You are going to love this book! An alien planet, two people with painful pasts and a sand storm that brings them together. Breeze is a scientist who applied for a job far away from her home to study the shifting sand on a newly inhabited planet. Tack is a C-Force Cyborg, on leave and trying his best to put his past behind him. He’s built a life for himself and his dog away from everyone. Breeze sets out for a different city one day to further her research and ends up in a terrible sand storm, the last thing she remembers is something heavy hitting her in the head and then nothing. Tack likes his life like it is. No one to worry about but himself and his dog. When his perimeter alarm goes off repeatedly, he goes to check it out. What he finds shouldn’t be possible. Two people with trust issues and a budding romance must ride out a storm and try to figure out the feelings that are coming up. Can they believe in themselves enough or will all they’ve come to know be “Blown Away”?
Tack may be a cyborg but that doesn't make him some heartless automaton. His heart (and his trust) took a pounding and he placed himself on a voluntary timeout on the most inhospitable planet (think Tatooine from Star Wars). The sand is about as friendly as he is.
Breeze has made a discovery but before she can confirm her data her ship crashes near Tack's cabin. His nature won't allow him to leave anyone stranded so Tack brings Breeze home. His trouble radar is pinging and he knows she's hiding something but didn't think it would be quite that astonishingly awful.
Mature main characters for the win! Over 40 and fab! On the run heroine, forced proximity, one bed, untrusting hero, and a cute doggo! Sajave is turning out to be a very interesting planet and thankfully Cyborg Force is up to the task of taming anything in their path!
I really enjoyed this book. I don't read cyborg stories that much, but this was a great read. Great world building. Wonderful characters. I really liked both the heroine- scientist Breeze, and the hero- C-Force cyborg Tack. He rescued her from being stranded in a sandstorm, but they did not have the best beginning to their relationship. It was fun watching that relationship develop. And I absolutely loved Tack's dog, Bandit. (Always nice to have a fur baby in romance stories!) This story was fun, exciting, suspenseful, and unexpected. A wonderful read! 5 stars.
It was so very easy to become totally immersed in Blown Away. Lots of sand, secrets and danger surround the the female scientist and the cyborg. It isn’t love at first sight but these two damaged people find their way. I loved that the greater part of the story involved only those two. The spice is nice, not too much or too little. Loved the dog too. I was very sorry to reach the end.
Both of the main characters are forced to be together due to severe weather conditions. They are both emotionally damaged from uniquely different incidents from their pasts. It is during this time spent together that they both find the courage to overcome these obstacles, learn to once again trust and believe in love….until the plot twists happens.
This book is entertaining and a great start to a new series. The storyline is filled with action, adventure and intrigue. The interaction and chemistry between the characters is wonderful. I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book as a Free ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
What a great story! Cara Bristol does it again! This story pulls you in from page one and doesn't let up even at the end! The characters are well developed (even the dog), the plot and action keeps going making it hard to put down to do your work. I'm hoping book 2 will be out soon!. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was an excellent story that completely blew me away with the plot and the heat between our two MCs. It started a little slow, but thankfully once the two meet the pace really picked up. I loved how they both grew and healed together, made for a satisfying HEA.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was great. This is a sifi/ cyborg romance and takes place on a sand filled planet. The storyline was amazing with lots of adventure. The characters are interesting together but in the end come together. Great Read.
I just loved this book. It was so well-written that it captured my mind, and I was dragged along for the ride. Once I started reading, I could not put it down until I read the last page.
***MINOR SPOILERS*** This book is the first book in the Cyborg Force series. Some of the characters from the next books are mentioned or appear. Tack is a cyborg who worked for a special forces unit. He is on leave after a terrible incident that gave him PTSD. His wife had been killed by a shapeshifter while he was away on a mission. The shapeshifter then had impersonated her. Tack had not realized what happened and the shapeshifter had used him to gain access to events where she killed people. When Tack realizes what happens, he kills the shapeshifter. He is still reeling from emotional trauma and does not trust himself or others except for his old team. Tack has retreated to a hermit like existence on a desert planet. He lives in a remote area with his dog, Bandit. A transport crashes near his home during a fierce sandstorm and he rescues Breeze. (I think the title ties into Breeze being blown away in the storm as well as the emotions of their relationship. There is also a reference to being Blown Away in an email.) Breeze is in hiding from an abusive partner. Fairly quick after meeting Tack, Breeze blurts out her story. It seemed unlikely that she would do so, but Tack seems trustworthy and caring. Although the story is short and takes place over a few days, Tack and Breeze develop a relationship that seems believable. Both help each other heal and are caring of the other. Breeze is a scientist who makes an important discovery about life on the planet that will continue to be a factor in the next book. This is a pretty good line “Have you ever known government to halt a program? ‘Well, this didn’t work. Let’s stop it and try something else,’ said no bureaucrat ever.” At least once, a word was used improperly. I thought it was a decent read, but I do not plan to continue the series.
I received a copy from Booksprout; this is my honest review TRIGGER: details of ascending conjugal violence. -Good start to a new series, Tack and Breeze are both damaged and somehow their past brings them together. I love the cover. -Although naïve on many grounds, Breeze is educated but doesn't use her brains most of the time. I would have a hard time being around her. Tack is kind, has a great sense of honor and a good supporter too. I'm glad he got his epiphany too; it eases the pain. -Bandit is something else. "He was a border collie mix ... just as long as he wasn't Tyranian..." Can you imagine if that was the case? It's probably not but wow. The dog is smart and a great companion & partner for Tack. -Cute saying: "Sajave presented a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma"; it also perfectly defines the story. The only problem is that I figured out the riddle, mystery and enigma by 15%. -I had to laugh every time one or the other inserted their "secret code" or anything similar. A code is secret to start with. -My big LOL: "She was nosy. I liked her better ... unconscious.". -I was really surprised when Breeze opens up her sample case and there's no lock. This is the find of the century and there's no lock?! -I didn't like the part where they talk about food and being omnivores by nature. Most of what is said there is false and I'm not sure why it was there in the first place. For example, we're anatomically herbivorous and plants do have proteins; who says it needs to come from animals? When combined properly, plants, nuts and vegetables have all the essential amino acids.
This book was very well written, with no errors that I found, and answered all my questions as I thought of them. There's going to be a running plot question throughout this series, but this story had a definite HEA/HFN ending. Tack and Breeze made a great couple, were complete characters with their own backstories, and the insta-lust was believable given the circumstances.
The only cons I had were- we know Breeze is 45 years old but we never find out how old Tack is (inquiring minds want to know), and also Tack mentioned in the beginning he thought Bandit his dog, was part dog and part something else because of how intuitive the dog seemed, but we never find out what the other part is (again, inquiring minds want to know). I definitely want to read more of this series! Pleasantly surprised!
I liked her cyborg force books and it's fun to get back to that world. In this story we have a scientist who is a survivor of domestic abuse who had discovered something monumental on a new colony. She crashes during a bad sandstorm onto the land of an emotionally wounded cyborg operative on mental health leave after he was forced to kill an alien shapeshifter disguised as his wife. Two traumatized humans heal together and he gets to protect her from her past and future dangers. There are more stories coming in this series, so buckle up or get blown away!
Now I'm wondering if all the "sand" or just some of it is connected to the alien life form. It was nice Trace was finally able to figure out how long he lived with the alien Sarah & that it wasn't their whole marriage. Fate certainly took a hand in protecting Breeze. 1) her waking up before her RTC exploded 2) Trace finding her before the storm buried her alive 3) needing to vomit so left the RTC before it exploded. Martin made a huge mistake lying on an open line about C-force. Can't wait for book 2.
