LYNSAY SANDS is the nationally bestselling author who is known for her hysterical historicals as well as the popular Argeneau/Rogue Hunter vampire series. With her witty and charming personality, Sands describes books as, “Waking dreams or stories, tales to amuse, entertain and distract us from everyday life.” She’s been writing stories since grade school and considers herself incredibly lucky to be able to make a career out of it. Her hope is that readers can get away from their everyday stress through her stories, and if there are occasional uncontrollable fits of laughter, that’s just a big bonus. This is a well-written, entertaining collection of four steamy, paranormal romance novellas. Ms. Sands' entry features a heroic vampire, Ms. DeWylde's entry features an Egyptian mummy, Ms. Howell's entry features a witch and a beast from warring families, and Ms. Mead's entry features a succubus and demons. All of the novellas have been previously published, except for Ms. DeWylde's novella. Ms. Howell's story is part of her vampire series and Ms. Mead's story is part of her succubus series, and each can be enjoyed as a stand alone.
I am an avid reader of Lynsey Sands and Hannah Howell and their stories are absolutely amazing! I also really enjoyed the stories of Saranna DeWylde and Richelle Mead who are new authors for me!
I read 2 of the 4 stories in this book. Both were short and quick reads. I do find I miss the details of a longer story that answers many of those things left unanswered in the short ones.
This book is a compilation of four stories by four different authors. The first story, Bitten, is by Lynsay Sands. As the title suggests it deals with a vampire. This is a "good" vampire and the ending has a cute ending. The second story, Heart of the Mummy, is by Saranna DeWylde. This story follows an archaeologist as she works to prove the legend/myth of He Who Endures is not a myth but a true story. All she needs to do is find the heart of He Who Endures to prove the myth is fact. As luck would have it, a site is found in Egypt and it is promising to prove her right. Again, there is a unique twist to the end of the story. The third story is The Yearning by Hannah Howell. Of the four stories, I think this one is my favorite. This story tells of a curse put on a family by the bride when she is thrown over on her wedding day for another woman much wealthier than she. Unfortunately, it seems a curse comes back twofold on the person casting the curse. For 435 years the two families have suffered as a result of that one fateful day. But now it seems there is a descendant of the scorned bride who believes she knows how to lift the curse. But can she convince the male contingent that she knows the secret and will he cooperate? For me, this was the best of the four! The fourth story is City of Demons by Richelle Mead. This story deals with a demonic 'trial' to determine which of three demons is guilty of murder. The demon boss who has been summoned for jury duty passes his summons off onto one of his subordinates, a succubus who has been carrying on a relationship with a human. The succubus takes the job very seriously and her moral code will not allow her to accept bribes from the three demons being interrogated. She deals with threats against herself and her boyfriend but stands her ground until the true killer is revealed and the three innocents released.
I'm mostly giving the stars I am giving for the first story. I enjoy Lynsay Sands, and her humor. It annoyed me that the stories descriptions on the back did not match the order of the stories in the book, which was confusing. Heart of the Mummy was a weird one for me. The characters having known each other when the woman was still a child, but the man being able to easily accept and move on with the adult? Creepy. The Yearning felt like a Scottish take on Beauty and the Beast with a bit of witchery thrown in. Yawn. Lastly, City of Demons was not Paranormal Romance just because it involves demons. I don't call following your significant other around trying to see if they'll cheat on you romantic. Ugh. Save time. If you must read this, just read the first story.

3.5 I was really enjoying this. But the last story kind of killed it for me.
and spicy!
Bitten ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved this novella. It was beautiful, tragic, and spicy!
Heart of the Mummy ⭐️⭐️⭐️ At first the title made me nervous, but then I realized it was a lot like the mummy movies and I absolutely loved it. 3 stars cuz despite the paranormality of it…some logistics were hard to follow.
The yearning ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was so cute!
City of Demons ⭐️⭐️ I get that she’s a demon…but to treat a loved one like that…not okay
DNF. Didn’t realize this was a series of novellas surrounding mythical creatures such as vampires. I listened to Bitten, which was alright…just the typical vampire lover troupe which was cute enough, but I didn’t care enough to read the others. Novellas can be cute but they’re best in small quantities; an author can only fit so much detail in such a short book and I just prefer more. Especially when it comes to the romantic build up.
This is pretty much a 2022 rerelease of a 2008 book with the same name except that one story (A Hell of a Time by Jackie Kessler) was taken out and another story added (Heart of the Mummy by Saranna Dewylde), I suspect because the copyright ran out and back to the author and they wanted to release it as an audiobook. So it has the same name and 3 of the same stories by the most known of the authors, Lynsay Sands, Hannah Howell, and Richell Mead.
This is a book with four stories by four different authors. I like the first three short stories by Lynsay Sands, Saranna DeWylde, Hannah Howell. The last story was okay. The stories all deal with vampires and other demons of some sort.
Loved all four of these stories, I think my favorite was centered around a healer and a lord who have found themselves entangled in a curse put upon them by their ancestors.
Loved 1 of 4 novellas in this book. Would love a full book of Heart of the Mummy the connection was BURNIG between them and just found myself wanting more.
I have come to the realization that I am simply not the target audience for this type of stories. But this was a gift for a friend and it was Valentine's Day, what better book would there be to spend the evening reading? I'll break my ratings down by story.
Bitten: 1.5/5. There was 0 personality and 0 chemistry. This felt so empty and lifeless to me. I guess that's fitting for a vampire romance? I wish the 10 page unnecessary and unsexy prologue had been scrapped and those words used for actual dialogue between the characters.
Heart of the Mummy: 2.5/5. This was so dramatic for no reason, but at least there was something between the characters! Interests and understanding and conversation go a long way. Unfortunately, I could tell the author really struggled with keeping the length down. It felt like there was a lot cut out and it made the reading experience pretty jarring.
The Yearning: 2/5. This had so much potential, if only there wasn't so much misogyny. The SA scene was entirely unnecessary and I did not like the strange focus on virginity towards the end. But I really did like their interactions and chemistry outside of that, and the author had a pretty good handle on writing for the length of story.
City of Demons: 3/5. The one with the least romance was my favorite. This had a neat premise and actual worldbuilding (whoa) and did a great job balancing story with the short length. Unfortunately, I really hated how it just became the main character testing her boyfriend? It felt like the concept was really fumbled by the end because of the romance. Also why were all the demon names so lame?
Bitten - Lynsay Sands Keeran rescues Emily from a shipwreck and she turns his life around, showing him that he's not the monster he believed he was. Although this was good, and I enjoyed it, I have to admit that I don't recall much of the story. Perhaps it's the brevity or perhaps it just didn't "stick."
Heart of the Mummy - Saranna DeWylde This was different. Egyptian isn't my 'thing,' but setting that aside, there was just too much missing in this short story. Short stories, by their nature, are - short, but in this case there were important parts of the story missing. It felt like a longer story "chopped up" to fit a short story format. As such there were times I was lost between scenes.
The Yearning - Hannah Howell This was the best of the four stories and I enjoyed it a lot. Sophie has to figure out how to undo a curse that has plagued both her and Alpin's families for centuries. There are some mild twists as she tries and discards remedies.
City of Demons - Richelle Mead. This was interesting and I enjoyed it, although I'm not a fan of first person POV. The tribunal was more interesting than Georgina's "testing" of her boyfriend's faithfulness, though.
To sum up - although I enjoyed reading this compilation of short stories, none really stood out as outstanding. The Yearning was the best of the four. Perhaps they all suffered with the shorter format. It was nice to try out a couple new authors.
Four short stories covering vampires, immortals, and demons. Lynsay Sands writes about a vampire who finally finds love. Saranna DeWylde’s story is about an undead Egyptian who is looking for his mummified heart. Hannah Howell’s story is about descendants of a curse and how a cure was found. Richelle Mead’s story is about a trial of demons.
I enjoyed the stories with the exception of the one by Richelle Mead. I just couldn't get into this one. The vampire story was short but the vampire finds his one and only after two hundred years. The story about the Egyptian looking for his heart was good as he realized what he had been looking for was right in front of him in the form of love for Kalila. In the Scottish story about the curse put on two families by an angry woman, her descendant thought of a way to end the curse. It worked.
I received the book free of charge from Goodreads.
While I had read both the Lynsay Sands and Hannah Howell stories before it was always a pleasure to read them again. Saranna DeWylde's story was really good. Richelle Mead's story was disappointing in that there was no true happy ending, just back to the normal way the couple was doing things. I like a REAL happy ending. Addendum: Having never read any other Richelle Mead's books, I was unware that her story is linked to the Georgina Kincaid series. So perhaps my happy ending is there.
I really liked reading other stories by authors I never read before. Out of the 4 author’s I only ever read Lynsay Sands. I really enjoyed reading the short stories but my favorite was Bitten by Lynsay Sands! Each story is amount a couple of chapters long.
I would recommend reading this if you want to sample other authors work. Heart of the Mummy was a really cute story as well by Saranna DeWylde!
This is a republish of an anthology from 2008 with an additional story. The new story Heart of the Mummy was my favorite because it brought back nostalgia of the movie The Mummy with Brendan Fraiser.
This is a paranormal romance anthology. It’s a great introduction to the genre and these authors. These women know their craft and are able to immerse you in their stories in a short period of time.
I really enjoyed all 4 stories. I have read all of Lynsay Sands books. I am a huge fan. I have also read a lot of Hannah Howell's books. So I was not worried about being disappointed but was very surprised about how much I enjoyed the other two stories. I will definitely be looking for more from those authors.
Four tantalizing, seductive tales, written by four authors, about forbidden pleasures; unnatural hungers and irresistible attractions; limitless lust and undying needs. I received this copy from the author, Lynsay Sands, and this is my honest review.
4 different stories one is about a vampire who learns about love, a mummy who is cursed to live a life without a heart, a curse put on two families until love over wealth is chosen, and about demons & etc.
