She’s the girl next door, my best friend, and all I want. If only I could figure out how to tell her.
Ever since my dad took a job in Washington D.C., I’m used to picking up the slack around the house. Between school, taking care of my four sisters, and diving practice, I’m a master at handling whatever life throws at me. Except when it comes to the girl next door.
Gwen has been my best friend ever since kindergarten. She’s the jelly to my peanut butter, the frosting to my cake. She’s there for me like no one else. The keeper of my secrets. Except there’s one secret I can’t figure out how to share—I’m hopelessly in love with her.
And secrets have a nasty way of multiplying. Just when I need my best friend the most, another guy asks me for advice on how to win Gwen’s heart.

I don’t know that I didn’t start to re-like Sam after the 400s but it ended ok. I mean. I told the hubby at page 200ish that I was reading a good book but the couple got together super fast and I was waiting for the drop, the angst, the relationship to implode. Then it happened annnd boom…
**Just a temporary placeholder review to say at about page 400, I’ve decided Sam is NOT nice. He needs to get his shi+ together.**
Best friend Gwen was like, you hurt me. Sam was like, yeah I did sorry. This happened a few times and they got back together. Blah. I read the author’s note that it only gets worse with the next book in the series. (Ok maybe they didn’t say “it gets worse”, but I’m assuming the shaky HEA is gonna nosedive into deeper messiness. Haven’t decided if I’m ready to ruin this fragile book bubble.
Czukas writes from a believable perspective as she delves into the complexities of first love, young adulthood, and facing the fact that life isn't a fairy tale. Growing up with a father who is away for extended periods of time has enough challenges, but when Sam finds that his life has been built on a lie for years it shakes him to the core.
