The adventurers make it to the Northern Plateau and their journey becomes more dangerous because of the monsters and demons still concentrated in that area. Their ambling quest is interrupted by several fights, but they don't bother to pick up the pace.
A nice visit with the characters even if none of it feels particularly necessary.
The Northern Plateau has problems for our merry band as they continue on their journey. Between demons and dragons they have their hands full, but, as usual, the real friends were the useless spells we gained along the way.
I’ll say from the start that the mining section is probably the weakest one, dealing with an old debt. It has its amusing bits, notably how bloodthirsty Fern gets and the running gag about the bread, but it’s uncharacteristically okay in a series that tends to outstanding.
Everything else is quite winning, starting off with a lesson to Stark that emphasizes that age brings experience, as he inadvertently echoes something Frieren herself said when she was travelling with the hero’s party all those years ago.
This is followed up by a quest for booze illustrating how not all elves are quite as nice as Frieren, as a capricious joke accidentally turns into a sort of obsession and then becomes a bit of a joyous event thanks to, yes, some lessons from the past.
I could see this reliance on flashbacks being a bit much for people, but I firmly believe it’s the extra spice that has helped the series just capture my own fancy with its considerable charms. It gives it an extra depth and lends the world a lived-in feel, and the mangaka makes full use of it as well. The writing for this series has always been quite good.
We swerve into the more action oriented side of things later in the volume, as the company meets up with Methode and Genau, who have been in past volumes, and we spend time with them investigating a demon slaughter.
This storyline goes all sorts of places and almost all of them are interesting. Genau is goal oriented to the point of having lost his humanity, and he’s actually the first one to admit it. He ends up paired with the overly compassionate Stark and that leads to some interesting conversations between the two.
The demons they face are also intriguing in their own way - one has a power I am regrettably forced to label as ‘very cool’ and they prove to be a very canny enemy. I like the way the fights only occasionally become drawn out in the series.
Instead, the combat tends towards quick and brutal, as it would be, which leads to some surprises as characters that seem destined for more definitely won’t be without a lot of tape and some staples.
One of my constant joys in this series is how good it is at othering. Elves, humans, and demons do not think alike and that makes them so much more interesting. I love Frieren talking about why the demons fly and how the mages outthink their opponents by doing things that demons simply can’t even consider.
And we even get a surprising revelation as to just why Frieren keeps asking for useless spells and it’s as thoughtful as every other aspect of the story. All tied up with an outro that brings back another familiar face and promises the next big challenge to come.
This series remains rock solid and I just want it to keep doing exactly this and for as long as it can maintain the quality. It has so much going for it and gives a lot while seemingly being very simple. A real gem.
5 stars - oh, I should probably give it four, it’s not the best Frieren has ever been, but I won’t give my favourite series any less and that certainly hasn’t changed.
Genau and Methode are growing on me. I'd like to see them again someday!! I can't wait for Sein and Methode's encounter, though!! I'm excited about what Sein's reaction will be. Head over heels in love, I guess? This is getting even more interesting. The demon encounter in the Northern Plateau is wild and satisfying.
This continues to be an enjoyable slow burn, where generally one major lore question is answered. Typically, it’s one you didn’t particularly think you even had. In this case, why does Frieren ask for a reward from people when helping them out? A question we learn about is why are Frieren and Serie have such different outlooks on so many things, including what “strength” is, when so many of their commonalities would suggest them having the same attitudes and thinking?
When the group needs to deal with a demon attack, Frieren believes in Fern and likes her qualities, whereas Serie believes anyone that isn’t a killer, basically, will be prey by something else, and will die. She doesn’t want people to die, but she isn’t good at communication, so we don’t really know what the root of that even comes from yet. Why didn’t Serie take on the demon king? Why did she end up ruling over the first class mages, when she tore up the Will asking her to pretty much do exactly what? Is there a large threat like the demon king looming, or are demons just that much of a problem, and the only way for Serie to express concern is to be detached and insist people be ruthless killers to deal with demons, and life, in general?
A lot of this volume is a fight with demons that showcases Fern and introduce a new first class mage guy. I’m curious where it’s going, as usual.
I really love this series! All the characters are just adorable. 💖
The opening story is tragic, but I am glad they defeated the monsters. And it is awestruck at how Frieren does what her previous party did, especially Himmel's good deeds. 🥺
I am super excited for the anime adaptation and the next volume! ✨
The journey continues. Chapter 69 is the most memorable.
Chapter 69 Boshaft, the Emperor Alcohol
Frieren and her friends were being asked to help out a Fass. He wants to open a door with a magical barrier. Inside was the Emperor alcohol Boshaft.
Milliarde asked Frieren. "Can you picture a time when what you spent your life searching for turned out to be some completely worthless garbage?"
Good question.
Chapter 77 A poor village is endangered by dragons. So they request help from Frieren. As they are poor, they don't have much to pay for the service. They offer the most useless magic. A magic that makes you not bite your tongue if you speak very fast.
Fern asked why Frieren would take rewards. The answer is simple. As a hero's journey. One would not want people to feel that they owe the hero something for their service. By accepting a reward, then the gratitude is shown and accepted. Then they left without making people feel obligated by their services.
Wonderful story. Contemplative. Just the way I like it.
I'm so happy to see the first class mages again. Methode is a babe. That conversation about patting Frieren's head was one of my favourites of the whole series. Frieren's satisfied smirk once she got her hands on the grimoire. I love these nerds.
This series really knows how to cut out padding, but keep in valuable and quiet character-building moments. The fights in this one were sick, can't wait to see them on screen!
The strength of Frieren? It doesn't go to the place the typical fantasy anime does. And it kept up in this volume as well. So, even if there wasn't a whole lot going on in this volume, I still enjoyed it all the same.
