From the mind that brought you Rack Cheap, Crazed Playthings comes Knock-Offs! Totally Unauthorized Action Figures is a celebration of the dimestore bootleg figure, the copyright-infringing silliness meant to fool our grand people. The subjects range from toys of the 1960s to the 2000s and include every popular genre. Chapters will include Superheroes, Science Fiction, Horror, TV/Movies, and you’d better believe 80s toy lines. So many discount Darth Vaders and Skid Row Skeletors. Over 100 pages of toy lines look slightly familiar with names like Galaxy Warriors, Turly Gang, Battle Man, Supper Warrior, Nightmare Feddy and Big Fella. Knock-Offs will also celebrate the fantastic bootleg toys art scene and the infectious work of SuckLord, Killer Bootlegs, Magoob Toys and many more.
Lovingly assembled photos explore a funtastic variety of action figure knockoffs produced in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I especially loved seeing "Agent Telepathy" from the Bronze Bombers (GI Joe knockoff series). Forgot all about her!
Written by Brian Heiler from the website Plaid Stallions. He also puts out Toy Ventures magazine. I’ve talked to him a few times on one of my podcasts, he’s a great guy. I read a previous book of his, Rack Toys.
This book is excellent. I used to collect Star Wars action figures pretty heavily and I was always fascinated by weird bootlegs. This book scratches that itch hardcore. Lots of great pictures, and Brian lets those pictures shine and gives quick one or two line explanations for each figure. If you’re into weird, vaguely familiar action figures, this book is for you.
