About the author
Hans Christian Andersen
7,777 books3,603 followersHans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H.C. Andersen) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories — called eventyr, or "fairy-tales" — express themes that transcend age and nationality.
Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Nightingale", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and many more. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films.

A little of what you fancy does you good ( Free Audio book on Audible.uk)
"Here are four of Hans Christian Andersen's best-loved short stories, specially adapted for young children and read by some of Britain's well-known actors. The Emperor's New Clothes: An emperor is promised a special suit of clothes by a pair of tailors. The Little Mermaid: A beautiful mermaid falls in love with a prince. The Fir Tree: A little fir tree is desperate to grow up and be like the other trees in the forest. The Wild Swans read by Penelope Wilton: A princess must rescue her brothers from a spell cast by a wicked queen.
What an excellent audio book, I just loved the narrators who made the stories so atmospheric and brought them to life, The background sounds of the sea, birds and trees really were beautiful. I enjoyed this little book so much and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys going back to their childhood for a little reminisce.

My 5 year grandson got a kick out of this. He said he would definitely say he couldn't see the clothes even if people would think he wasn't smart because you have to tell the truth. He wouldn't walk outside in his underwear.

All of these stories are familiar to me and my two favorites were the Emperor's New Clothes, excellently narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi, and The Wild Swans, read by Penelope Wilton. I also enjoyed the other two, but the Little Mermaid always makes me sad with the way it ends, and while I love David Tennant, the tale of the Fir Tree is not the most interesting. Overall, it was a solid listen.

(Audible stories, stories for kids, free "for as long as schools are closed" due to the Covid epidemic. Written by Hans Christian Andersen, narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi, Anne-Marie Duff, David Tennant, and Penelope Wilton)
I've listened to many, many of these fairy tale collections on Audible stories during the Covid lock down, and this is the best of the lot, particularly Derek Jacobi's hilarious reading of "The Emperor's New Clothes." Also contains "The Little Mermaid" (Ann-Marie Duff), "The Fir Tree" (Tenant), and "The Wild Swans" (Wilton). Energetic, dynamic readings, and sound effects that enhance rather than distract from the story. Recommended.

You forget how disturbing the real fairy tales are .. my favorite was the suicidal fir tree cut down for one Christmas and then burned... Highly unsettling, well read

Never heard the “The Fir Tree” before - it was basically a horror story.
In the case of “Wild Swans”, I’m not sure if I’ve ever read the fairy tale before, but I know the story mainly from the Estonian movie “Metsluiged” (1987), which I watched dubbed in Russian. It was a very dark movie and the ending was heartbreaking - the youngest brother is taken “to heaven” or wherever by the “good” witch/fairy, because Eliza isn’t able to finish his shirt (it’s a shirt there, not a coat) on time - one sleeve is missing, and so one of his arms stays as a wing. And I guess, that meant he couldn’t stick around. Anyway, I was expecting that moment and bracing myself for it, but it never happened here - I guess the screenwriters made that up? So that’s good. What’s not good is that Eliza agrees to marry the guy that was just trying to send her off into the middle of nowhere just because she was collecting some plants in a graveyard in the middle of the night? The same plants that she was using to make thread from for her coat weaving? The hobby he seemed very eager to support, even after declaring her a witch? In the movie at least there is some time they spend together at the castle, which makes the whole romance thing slightly more believable, as well as his reaction to her nighttime activities. Although that reaction was much more extreme in the movie, if historically more accurate - they plan to burn her at the stake. I don’t remember if she marries him after that in the movie - I hope they at least fixed that travesty.

I loved the stories. The Little Mermaid originally has a different ending than the animated version.

This book is the story of an Emperor who gets tricked into wearing no clothes in front of his entire kingdom.
The format of this book is an interesting one. The end covers are very pastel colored. The pictures cover both pages and they are of different items of clothing. The actual illustrations are also different than most books. Most of the pictures are very busy. The text is strategically placed on the page while the pictures surround it. Many of the pictures have something to do with the emperor, such as stamps or money with his face on it. I find this to be interesting because it gives the impression that the emperor is very confident or “cocky.”

This "The Little Mermaid" has the real dark ending. Not even the bit about 300 years in purgatory or whatever, she just dies and that's it. It's actually way more impactful this way! So what is the lesson? The true price of love is steep? Or Don't be reckless and chase after fantasies? Much to ponder!
I had never even heard of "The Fir Tree" or "The Wild Swans" before reading this.
"The Fir Tree" in particular is actually a GREAT lesson for all of us: enjoy the moment.

The Emperor's New Clothes different ending than what I've heard before. The Little Mermaid had what I believe was Anderson's original ending. The Fir Tree I didn't remember this story. The Wild Swans slightly different version than I was familiar with.

I mostly listen to books when I'm in bed, and the entire reason I picked this one from the library is that it meant David Tennant was reading me a bedtime story. It did the job.

4 abridged short stories from HCA.
5 stars for the awarding-winning narrators!

The Fir Tree is compelling though sad. It is a good bedtime story. The other stories are just too sad.
The narrators are excellent, especially David Tennant. He brought that fir tree to life!

Just thought it was time to listen to these classics as I had never heard them before.

Not the best version of these stories that I've read though the narrators were pretty good.
