Loved this! I love how it is canon with the rest of the series. The art was amazing, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Plus, it came with a Garmadon Minifig!

I was excited to read this comic from the moment it was announced. A canon comic about one of the best characters in this franchise? Heck yeah! The art looked really appealing, as well, and that impression has not changed since I read it. The style is loose and expressive, unlike previous Ninjago comics that are very stiff and always almost looked like they just traced over minifigures. I'm very pleased with its visuals!
As for the story itself, this is, of course, a single comic that makes up a larger story, but for what it is, it's very good. I enjoy the Two-Moon Village, their interactions with the title character are fun, Min is a cute kid, Garmadon's dry, humorous moments are great, and I love seeing him be in the spotlight and get some focus. Also, the usage of his Oni powers and referencing his heritage there is much appreciated. It looks like that will become even more relevant in the next season of the TV series, as well! Connections!
If you enjoy Ninjago, you'll definitely enjoy this comic. If you're unfamiliar with the franchise, perhaps not as much, as it is much more appreciable with the proper context, but it's still a good comic and I can't wait to see where they go with this next.

Garmadon is mijn favoriete karakter van de Ninjagoserie. Hij is een slechterik die diep van binnen ook goed is, heeft humor en ziet er tof uit. Ik werd dan ook direct enthousiast toen ik deze graphic novel over hem zag. En dan ben ik nog geen eens een echte Ninjagofan, in tegenstelling tot mijn twee zonen, die dan ook enthousiaste kreten lieten horen toen ik dit boek uit de doos haalde!
De eerste indruk van dit boek is ook echt geweldig. De voorkant is posterwaardig, en snel doorbladeren laat een visueel spektakel zien, waar je het liefst meteen langer naar wilt kijken. Visueel heb ik niets dan lof! Vooral de paginavullende illustraties zijn een lust voor het oog. De illustraties zijn krachtig en zitten vol beweging. De jongens vinden het dan ook leuk om door het boek te bladeren. Qua lezen neemt Luuk zijn tijd, dus ik heb het boek zelf uitgelezen voor deze recensie.
Ik was blij met de achtergrondinformatie die ik heb door het gedeeltelijk meekijken met de jongens en het voorlezen van hun Ninjagotijdschriften. Daardoor zat ik snel in het verhaal. Garmadon helpt een dorp van hun vijand, maar tijdens zijn reddingsactie wordt het dorp door een andere vijand aangevallen. Een vijand die graag ook wil afrekenen met Garmadon. Deze verhaallijn zal kinderen van alle leeftijden aanspreken, en als je bekend bent met Ninjago zul je ook oude bekenden terugzien. Maar het verhaal kent ook diepere lagen, waarin Garmadon worstelt met wie hij is. Dit zal voor jongere kinderen moeilijker te snappen zijn, maar voor ouderen is het een fijne toevoeging, al moest ik soms schakelen tussen deze verhaalmomenten en de andere verhaallijn.
Het boek bevat fijne extra’s. Je begint met korte enthousiaste recensies, wat ik zelf altijd leuk vind, want dat geeft me nog meer zin om aan een boek te beginnen. Aan het einde is er een leesgids, waarin belangrijke locaties, personages en thema’s overzichtelijk zijn opgesomd. Ook staan er 16 discussievragen en 5 oefeningen over het verhaal en het maken van een strip. Een paar bladzijden uit een “schetsboek” geven nog wat achtergrondinformatie over het maken van dit boek. Leuke aanvullingen, zeker voor de echte Ninjagofans!
