The eighteenth “ Mountain Man” adventure has arrived!
The two mountain men partners finally left the War Between the States and meet up with an old man and his granddaughter in St. Louis. The old man basically called the boys liars when they said they knew Brigham Young, the Prophet of the Mormons. The old man hired a guide and left on the next paddle boat to Omaha. There, he hired a guide and some guards to help him and his granddaughter get to Salt Lake City. Uzziah and Immanuel followed, worried that they might be taken advantage of.
Along the way, the granddaughter shot and killed one of the men hired to protect her when he insulted her. The boys were then welcomed to help with the rest of the journey. They made it to Fort Laramie where, late the night before they are meant to leave for Salt Lake, a man had his throat cut. The party was unaware of the murder, as they left before false dawn.
In Salt Lake the granddaughter and the old man were introduced to Deputy U.S. Marshal Porter Rockwell. The guide that helped them there was discovered by authorities, and Deputy Marshal Rockwell investigated. The man had been mutilated, and Uzziah suspected the granddaughter of the old man.
The old man and his granddaughter weaseled an invitation to meet Brigham Young from Porter, then are invited to the Mormon Ball. Uzziah feared that the girl was unhinged and committing heinous crimes against men, especially after the old man’s guide was found emasculated and robbed. After the ball, the granddaughter of the old man took Brigham to a place where she might have her way with him.
Will the boys keep the Prophet of the Mormon Church safe? Will Immanuel’s fascination with this beautiful granddaughter bring about his demise, or will the horror she represents be stopped dead in its tracks?
A well written mountain man story about a woman who having previously been raped went on a killing spree in the Utah territory. A murder mystery solved by Uzziah and his partner. Lots of mystery and action and a good mountain man short story that I would recommend.
