“Introduction to Sailing” is veteran sailor Christian Williams’ candid and highly entertaining invitation to boats and the sea. Writing for new sailors of every kind, he evokes the joy of wind and water in an intimate style that begins with dinghies, which he advocates as most fun of all, and continues through cruising boats small and large and for every budget. His you-are-there first outing on a tiny Sunfish is itself a short course in how to sail any boat, and from there he leads us on a hands-on practical tour of daysailers, pocket cruisers and the offshore sailboats of dreams, all informed by his own experience in dinghy and offshore racing, long-distance cruising and survival in gales and storm. After 30,000 miles at sea Williams’ enthusiasm is contagious, and his more than 10 million views on YouTube have made him a social influencer. This extended personal conversation is an invaluable course in how to get started sailing, what boat to buy and how to pay for it, and the value of forever directing our imagination beyond the horizon ahead.
"Introduction to Sailing" was conceived as the first "how to sail" audiobook, available from Audible April 1, 2022.
I just completed a weekend sailing course and this book really helped me to understand what I knew and did not know (alot) about sailing. I found the sailing scenarios at the beginning on a dingy and small sailing vessel very helpful in learning more about wind direction and understanding the sailing jargon. It gave me " A-ha" moments which I then used improve my sailing each time I have gone out thereafter.
Christian is an excellent storyteller and his writing is top notch in this book about sailing and boat buying with some comedy that truly hits home to all of us “Sailors “
Quick and fun read. Definitely more of a conversation about sailing rather than a technical how-to guide. Serves as a spark to get someone out to that first lesson/rental.
