"Welcome to Normal, where no one is."

I received an ARC of Charlie Lavender in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved it! Growing up in the Midwest myself, I found a lot of elements relatable. This is a coming of age story full of magic, mystery, science, and an evil force that I did not see coming. And it's full of 90s nostalgia. I loved watching Charlie's character grow throughout the story, this is the way young girls should see themselves represented in books. Tellus stole my heart from the first introduction, and I loved William's dad jokes. I hope we get some more backstory for the side characters. Carson has a voice that is uniquely his and I cannot wait to see how he builds upon the story. I may have started pestering him about my theory about the ending as soon as I finished 🙈

Gosh I just loved this so so much.

Here’s what I loved:
- Charlies’s growth throughout this whole book, from her anxiety and feeling alone at the start, to finding her crew and where she belongs by the end - the Magic Breakfast Club
- The nostalgia - Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, discman cd players, texting a pager LOL, and so so many little nods to the ’90’s and I love it!
- Tellus, the owl. I always love a great animal sidekick. And Tellus loves tater tots, so I love Tellus.
- Charlie has the best dad - and with that, comes A+ dad jokes. Yall will love how much William loves his daughter.
- And Charlie also has the best best friend in Ichigo. I love how their friendship forms so quickly and remains solid through this book.
- Charlie, Josh, and her friends are all 14-16 (I believe I have that range right. I know Josh is older) so this is younger-end YA, but the fact that this author pulled off the setup for a love triangle that I don’t immediately hate? Major props there.
- Speaking of love triangle - there is questioning bi rep as Charlie starts to catch those feels (although I know which team I’m on!)
- The pace of the writing and how the overall book was structured with swapping back and forth between what’s going on with Charlie, and what’s going on with those out to harm her and her friends.
- That ending! Fast-paced, and everything really built up to the ending of this first book. NOW I NEED BOOK 2!

Thank you to the author and MTMC Tours for providing a physical copy in exchange for this review!

Update 9/12

Please read this; it’s just too good not to read. The nostalgia alone, had me swooning.
No complaints about this book- it’s engaging and interactive which was unique and super fun. I would suggest reading through first and then reading the extras or you can be impatient like me and read them during 😂

Read if you like:

>> Secret Magic World
>> Witches
>> Dual Timelines
>> Evil Stupid Men
>> 90’s nostalgia (the best)
>> Familiars
>> Coming of Age
>> Amazing Characters
>> Budding Romance
>> Going behind your strict fathers back and learning all the things.

Listen, I’ve read a lot of amazing things lately but this is sitting at the top. The way Carson wrote the dual timelines really added to the story, especially when those timelines merge and then break apart again.
The characters are quirky and fun- I totally had an Ich growing up but his name was Kamu and we were not witches.
The mixing of science and magic I found to be unique as well.
This truly is a masterpiece and I am anxiously awaiting the next book!

Lab partner oath!

Must put thoughts together for a review.
But this, this was amazing.

Wow wow wow! 🤩 I never expected to enjoy this book this much. I’ve certainly haven’t been able to enjoy a YA in quite a while… But the cool magic theory, the 90’s nostalgia, the evil priests and the shocking last page have let me begging for the sequel. My only complaint is they way I was teased with the magic school and how little there was about it… Dear author, if you ever get around reading this review, please, please, more of Avery in the next book(s). A lot more!

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. After having read this 3 times to date already, and being at a loss for words the 1st time around, having indulged in a second read and then a third simply because I couldn't get enough, I can honestly say this is one of the best stories I've read in a very long time! Carson has completely nailed it, from page one you are transported in to the aptly named town of Normal and let me tell you, there is absolutely nothing normal about this place! This book is everything you're NOT expecting, you follow the lives of some seemingly normal people with beautifully described back stories, subtle hints thrown in as to what their futures shall be along the way, and a sprinkling of 'OH MY GOD DID THAT JUST HAPPEN?!' Every so often. To quote Anchorman, I'm in a glass case of emotion from start to finish of this wonderful book. There's magic, a cute high-school crush, some brilliantly depicted evil, some perfectly formed friendships and what can only be described as some beautiful sacrifices. I'm in awe of this story, Carson, you have outdone yourself.

beautifully & deeply written book! This is a witchy magic(kinda school setting) book but still managed to feel very unique to itself. I really like many of the side characters and hope we get more of their backstories! Very excited for the next book.

It goes almost without saying that this book struck me deep. I, of course wanted to love it ahead of time, how could I not? Magic? Religion? Secrets? Astro physics? It’s got everything I dreamed someone would put down on paper and done so masterfully that none of it seems out of place.

The thing is like to draw the most attention to though is the relationships. They’re honest. Heartfelt. They take me out of my world and just so comfortably slide me into theirs. I want to have dinner with Tara’s family. I want Charlie’s dad as my own. I want someone to treat me the way Josh treats everyone. These characters instantly became my friends.

I’d go on and on but the more you read this, the less you’re reading the book. And that’s just something I’d feel terrible about. I love it so much. It’s a book I’ve already read once and am already diving back into because I missed the characters.

This was spectacular. I am always a bit skeptical when the MCs Name is the same as my own. But I have to admit....this was an amazing read.
I sped through it and did not want to put it down.
The characters, the world, the plot - for me it just works so well.
Can't wait for part two.

First off I’d just like to say, this is the most gorgeous and thought-out book box I’ve ever seen. Every single detail, from the candles, witchy salts and crystals, to the divine smelling lavender that encased the whole package. It’s truly the most beautiful, aesthetic way I’ve seen a book presented and promoted—Carson, you really took the time and care with this, and it shows immensely. This book is also SO awesome and unique in that it’s a digitally enhanced, complete with QR codes at the end of every chapter, to give readers more insight and depth to subplots and perspectives. The author recommends doing this during the second read-thru, and that’s what I’m doing now! It’s truly immersive and spectacular.

This book is the perfect combination of magic, science and friendship. I loved every single aspect within this story, and want to shout from the rooftops about these characters. I cannot wait for everyone to meet Charlie—who I absolutely ADORED. Her kindness is something everyone should take notes from. Charlie Lavender is raised by her single dad, William, and he’s another favourite part of this story. Their bond is so sweet and so pure; full of love and admiration and support. I also fell in love with Ich—Charlie’s best friend— a prodigal kid with an affinity for physics, and an even bigger love of hip-hop. And touching on the 90s nostalgia, the nods to all things 90s was so cathartic and wonderful. I felt connected to the characters and felt so familiar with the atmosphere, while maintaining intrigue on where the excellent plot goes. Josh, Tara, the owl, even all the teachers…they are all so relatable and memorable and loveable. There were times where the dialogue and scenery was so palpable, I felt like I was watching a movie—in the best way. The author does a spectacular job of making the reader feel transported into the scenes wholly yet effortlessly.

Alongside wonderful characters, the author is simply a brilliant storyteller. The prose is beyond magical, but the depth in which other factors are presented is amazing. The interweaving of fun, 90s nostalgia and complex scientific elements as well as magic? Absolutely incredible. I truly cannot wait to continue this series (I’ve been in Carson’s DMs for weeks now, completely bugging him 😂) and cannot wait for everyone to meet Charlie! This book is a MUST, the story is so unique and enthralling and pure magic. It has earned a spot in my top five reads of the year. That’s knyou so much Carson, for not only this wonderful story, but allowing me to be so involved in her debut.

Charlie Lavender is just starting her freshman year of high school in 1993, avoiding embarrassing comments from her dad, getting to know her teachers, making new friends, and even discovering her first crush. But she misses her middle school best friend, Ivy, who is part of the mysterious "gifted" program and has been swept away by Tara, a stern girl with a lot of secrets. But Charlie starts noticing that even outside the gifted classroom, something weird is going on. She somehow has super speed and even manages to work a miracle—or does she? No one else can remember. She's desperate for answers, answers her own father seems to be keeping from her.

Charlie's story is a lot of fun. I like the twist on how she isn't allowed to go to magical academy and has to figure out how to uncover the mystery without supernatural assistance. The characters are vivid and a lot of fun, and the subplots make this book an intriguing YA urban fantasy. I'll take your word for it that there's a lot of 90's nostalgia that just hits the spot. Does anyone have a playlist for this book yet? There's a lot of good content here.

But this book also has some significant downsides; namely, that it has never met a good developmental editor or copyeditor. The proofreading is nearly flawless (except for the acknowledgements letter in the back), but there are significant story- and paragraph-level issues. The pacing is really off, especially since each chapter is broken up by intense tragic scenes involving murder and torture, covering nearly a third of the book, all of which results in ... well, I don't want to spoil it for you, but what the heck??? There are sentences that are difficult to follow or don't make sense, and a host of incorrect word choices. I'm honestly so sad because this book has a lot of really good aspects to it, but alas, the curse of every practicing copyeditor is to find errors in books and be unable to survive the pain of reading something that just really should have been fixed.

I absolutely adore everything about this book! Charlie, Josh, Ich, are my favorite trio!
The author's words were spell binding as I was transported to Normal, Illinois and slowly fell in love with the world the author has created.
This is a fun YA fantasy with 90s nostalgia that I absolutely LOVED! When Charlie and her friends discover a secret door at her school, her quest to gain access moves the story forward. A balance of magic, science, and religion come together very nicely. Charlie is a very likable character and it was nice to see her character evolve as the story progressed. I really loved many of the secondary characters. Josh, Ich, Tara, and many others! Their characters are fleshed out and they became my favorites.
The ending is HUGE! I was surprised and I cannot wait to get the sequel.
Don’t sit on the sidelines! Grab this book, and join the Magic Breakfast Club!

Favorite quote:
“Entangled particles are particles so intertwined that even when they’re separated, what happens to one affects the other. They’re a pairing in which one can’t be described without describing the other. It’s like the universe just knows some things belong to one another. And when it’s people, well, when two of those people come together, it’s explosive. But try to separate the two, and no matter where they wind up, they’re still tied together. That was my parents. Quantum Physics kind of love.”

Charlie Lavender and the Origin of Everything is a spellbinding, coming of age novel following our heroine, Charlie Lavender as she encounters the perils of high school and magic. A new best friend, love and her pet owl await her as she enters her freshmen year at Normal High. When Charlie and her friends uncover a world of magic hiding in plain sight her life's about to get a whole lot more interesting with evil priests and mythical witches running around. Can Charlie uncover the truths of this this world and find a place she truly fits in?

I loved this book! It's a perfectly witchy, spellbinding tale. I enjoyed my time with Charlie Lavender and following along on her magical journey. The author seamlessly blends together realism and magic, creating this lush magical world that felt very real. I love reading this book and getting wrapped in the pages of it's magic.

Charlie, as a character, is young, spirited and likeable. She's determined and her willingness to never give up and uncover the truth about everything propells the plot forward. As a reader I kept wanting to read to find out the truth right along with her. The supporting cast of characters is just as fleshed out as Charlie and I loved how their relationships spanned across the book.

This book even contains QR codes that you can read extra stories about the book with! I've check out a few of these now that I've finished and I think they just add another layer of richness. I definitely want to go back for another read through following each QR code as they appear! I think this is something really cool and unique that the author included!

Overall, Charlie Lavender and the Origin of Everything is a magical tale and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves witchy reads, magical schools, and mythical worlds.

Thank you to MTMC Tours and the author for a gifted copy of this novel (the protection spell kit was so cool too!) All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

I saw this book floating around Instagram and thought it was fate because my daughter's name is Charlie, so I HAD to get this.

Witchcraft, religion, science, and dark academia vibes - yes, please! The story was so entertaining and read like a movie playing out in my head. For me it was a mix of HP and Midnight Mass with a sprinkle of The Breakfast Club 😉

The top notch 90's vibes had me reliving my teen years. The queer and different ethnic representation of characters did not go unnoticed. AND THE FRIENDSHIPS! The friendships in this book are my absolute favorite. The bond Charlie & Ich have just steals my heart.

And just when you think the book can't get any better - there are QR codes! I read the book once through as the author suggested, then went back and scanned the codes. At first I just thought they would be bonus chapters to expand the story (which they are), but when I got to the code at the end of Chapter 3, I realized the way Carson wrote them was pure brilliance.

I cannot wait for the next book. I have a feeling this series is going to be a favorite among many - lab partners oath!

I’ve been a fan of Carson’s poetry and short stories for years and was eagerly anticipating the release of his first novel. He did not disappoint!

It’s got a relatable heroine, an unlikely trio of friends, all the angst and awkwardness of high school and all the 90’s nostalgia (the movies going to have a killer soundtrack).

But there’s also representation and magic and witches and evil priests and physics and even a Nintendo power glove that works. Not to mention the gorgeous cover art and QR codes that take you to alternate scenes and other fun stuff.

It was a great read and I’m already on my third time around. I’m heavily invested in these characters and I can’t wait to see how the story continues to unfold in the next 3 books to come.

Read it and tell your friends to read it too!

A phenomenal, mesmerizing introduction

If I had one word to describe how this book made me feel, it would be speechless. If I used many words to describe this book, they would be captivating, riveting, heartwrenching, hilarious, and so absolutely beautiful. The story of Charlie Lavender introduces the reader to dynamic overarching themes of religion, science good vs evil, love, and the human condition with a sprinkle of excellent dad jokes and relatable 90s nostalgia. If you have book to read this year, make it Charlie Lavender and the Origin of Everything: Volume One. That’s right folks, there is more to come from Charlie, and I’ll be in the front seat for the next ride.

This book is so freaking good!

There were so many pop culture references, and such an accurate representation of witches and magic.

I loved the world building and the narration of the story. really enjoyed the way you saw into two different stories at once and how they came together.

I definitely will be reading more from this series and can't wait to see what other adventures the MBC get up to!

This was full on 90s Nostalgia and I was here for it. I loved Carson's writing style and how descriptive the characters are. Each character was so unique in their own way. I do hope in the next book to get a little more backstory from the other characters. I enjoyed Charlie's growth throughout this book with herself and with the friendship she builds.

I really enjoyed this debut! The characters were fun and the magical world building was inventive. The twist at the end took me by surprise and made me excited for book two. This book leans into explaining the magical rituals in detail, which might slow down the plot, but I really enjoyed the care and details the author put into building the magic.
Last but not least,

4.5 rounded up.

I really enjoyed this book! The writing is beautiful, the characters are loveable, and the 90s nostalgia is on point. I loved the mix of magic and science. I thought Charlie is very mature for her age so even though this is YA, it didn't read super YA. I really loved all of the characters. I don't even know if I could pick a favorite but I love William Lavender's dad jokes. I'm also a sucker for the talented quarterback is actually a nice guy trope so Josh is ❤️❤️ The ending was a huge surprise. I'm pretty sure I said "oh shit" out loud when I read it. I wasn't expecting it at all and I honestly need the sequel right NOW.

It's not often that I want to rate a book higher than five stars, but this book was truly incredible. I have a book-hangover of the century.

Charlie Lavender is a female character done right and she is one every socially anxious team can relate to. Her personality and actions are never a consequence of her gender and Carson and focuses on her psychological and moral growth without ever compromising who she is at the heart of the story. This whole series is a breath of fresh air as it challenges assumptions about gender and transgresses heteronormativity with its diverse characters.

Carson has a gift. A true talent. He could write me books every single day and I wouldn't get tired of his brilliance. Drawing on science, astronomy, philosophy, religion, and his own remarkable imagination, Carson creates a vivid and enchanting fantasy novel that defies and redefines the universe. This first book is truly the origin of everything, and Carson's potential, as well as my own investment with the series, has skyrocketed to unlimited heights.

Charlie Lavender and the Origin of Everything completely sucked me in and whisked me away to a world I want to be forever lost in. Five stars for this book and for the start of a series I know won't let me free until I breathe in every last word.

Charlie Lavender and the Origin of Everything is just the beginning of what will hopefully be your new favorite world. Set in the aptly named Normal Illinois, we quickly discover that nothing is normal for Charlie, a girl ready to come of age and the endearing friends that surround her. Mr. Bowie has nailed several things about this story: the relationships between characters, the secrets and magic, the timeline jumps that assist the reader in fully comprehending the challenges that Charlie must face, and the hits of 90’s nostalgia that we long for. Charlie as a human is so well crafted and thought out, that high school me longs to be friends with her. Not a popular kid, perhaps even perceived as a weirdo, we take this coming of age journey with Charlie in such a way that makes you laugh and cry with her and for her. You’ll find yourself cheering on Charlie and her friends as they encounter otherworldly struggles and wishing that you could immediately pick up book two and keep reading.

If you thought that Carson was just a poet, think again. This is his best work to date.

I actually don’t think this has ever been done before…1990s nostalgia, witches, magic, music, mystery, coming of age, and young love that gives hope to more equality in the future literary world…ALL in one book. Even if you’re not an 90s nut like me, you’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat, turning page by page, wanting answers — but even more so, never wanting it to end. These characters will live in your heart forever. I honestly can’t wait to get everyone I know to read this and geek out with me. Bowie’s work is what we’ve all needed: an escape, an adventure, a new world to call home when it gets too rough here.

Enjoy! You’re in for a treat that you’ll come back to year after year.

Spectacular. Now for a re-read!

So, I bought this book for someone, but then wasn't sure if they would like it, so I figured I should read it first, you know, to test it for poison. But then, I wanted to read it again, like right away, because this time I wanted to take notes and dive deeper, so I decided that this copy is all mine. They have to get their own! I absolutely love this book and can't wait until volume two comes out in November!!!

I had the honour of receiving an ARC of Charlie Lavender and the Origin of Everything in exchange for an honest review and let me just say, if you thought Bowie’s poetry was heart-wrenching … just wait until you read this.

I say all of this as someone who has spent most of their life steering clear of YA Fantasy: this book was addicting. It sent me through a range of emotions, and I was shedding a few tears by the last chapter. It was the perfect blend of magic and 90s nostalgia, and the entire book played out like a 90s / early 2000s movie in the best way possible.

Bowie’s protagonist, Charlie, is a strong and relatable teenage girl who explores the different layers of girlhood and uncovers a part of her that had been kept a secret her entire life, all while navigating a new world of magic and science. Charlie is funny and awkward in a way that was so painfully relatable it had me blushing throughout the book – I loved it.

I especially loved the banter and dynamic between the characters. I enjoyed watching Charlie’s relationships develop with her peers, mentors and father; it felt so natural and pulled on all my heartstrings. Bowie did an incredible job at developing each character as an individual and tying in themes and diverse practices.

One of my favourite components of this book was the scene transitions. From a technical standpoint they were perfection – and I mean *chefs kiss. * The way the story tied itself together using clever line repetitions and smooth transitions was so satisfying, I cannot remember the last time I read a book that pulled this off as well as ‘Charlie Lavender and the Origin of Everything’ did.

I recommend this book if you like to read about magic, diverse characters & spiritual practices and love subtle nods to the 90s.

Charlie Lavender & the Origin of Everything by Carson Patrick Bowie, will delight readers everywhere. A witchy magical coming of age novel, that is not short of spectacular. Set in Norma Illinois, where everything is not. The author delivers a YA fantasy, with atmospheric 90s nostalgia. The smooth transitioning dual time frames, and lush magical realism adds to wonderful storyline. What really captured my heart and soul was the realistic characters, that I couldn’t help but fall in love.
I completely related to social anxiety and perils of high school that Charlie experiences, along with the love triangle. Some of the most key elements of the book is the importance of friendship and family. The air of secrecy of witches and a magical world, along with the science had me captivated. The writing was seamless and I am impatiently waiting for the next installment.

This is one author that you should take notice and follow.. simply an amazing book.!

*SPOIL FREE REVIEW*

"All I know is this is the only person I know how to be."

This could be one of the most enchanting reads I've come across in a long time.

Bowie has a beautiful and rich talent in building relationships that literally come off the pages. The character development is masterful, the world charming and full of so much magic AND science. This is a world that is timeless.

Each character is a lesson to be learned, no matter what age the reader is. The sarcasm, humor, and passion of these characters is palpable, and at times I found myself laughing with them. I am so in love with our group of friends - it feels like I was there with them along the way.

I must reiterate the relationships - Bowie has done something exceptional. He's brought to life an era that every single person can relate to. The struggles of developing an identity, discovering one's potential, learning what it means to be friends, and so on.

This is such a stunning book. I am thoroughly looking forward to the next!

First of all let me say that Charlie Lavender and the Origin of Everything is a wonderful read, entertaining with wonderful characters (both horrifying and lovely), expansive and well crafted world building.

The book opens in the town of Normal, Illinois, but soon you discover that “Normal” isn’t all that…

It’s a coming of age story about characters you love and learn to care for. It’s about friendship and family. It’s about things and people that are never quite what they first appear to be.

The book capture the awkwardness of being a teenager, trying to find out who you are, what/who you like and how to navigate relationships.

Carson Patrick Bowie has created an intricate and multilayered magical world, that reels you in, with heroes you root for and (like any good fantasy it has) excellent villains.

And did I mention there is also magic…

Charlie Lavender reads like a YA book, but is something all ages can enjoy, even this 50 something male reader.

This book. 💜💜💜💜💜💜

Carson Patrick Bowie you somehow managed to light up all my sweet nostalgia points with Charlie Lavender and the Theory of Everything Vol. 1.

I just finished it - breathless.

This. Is. Everything.

You managed to pack this book with all my favorite things. The friendship of this group. The magic. The villains. The music. The small town. The era. The complicated feelings.

I found this book because of author CG Drews posting about it recently. I managed to grab a used copy and it arrived, as a signed copy last week. What an unexpected bonus! Little did I know that volume 2 was days away from publication. I am so so glad.

Sending a 911 pager message to tell everyone to read this book. Grab volume 2 now - you are going to need both.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you wished you could find treasure in Astoria, would have loved getting detention at Shermer High, wanted have midnight margaritas with the Aunts or ride bikes in Hawkins, IN - this book is for you.
