World War II: What We Know Now

Rate this book
Learn from five remarkable professors in this set of One Day University presentations exploring the complicated legacy of World War II.

World War II was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, involving the majority of the world’s countries – including all of the great powers – forming two opposing military alliances. The major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities into the war effort. It was by far the deadliest conflict in human history, resulting in 70 to 85 million fatalities, due to actual battles as well as genocides (the Holocaust), starvation, massacres, and disease. In the wake of defeat, Germany and Japan were occupied, and war crimes tribunals were conducted against German and Japanese leaders.

World War II: What We Know Now (That We Didn’t Know Then)

This work is actually a lecture series rather than a traditional book, so the formatting and presentation differ from what readers might expect. The audiobook, produced by One Day University, feels more like a low-quality podcast than a conventional narration. The speakers frequently reference pictures, maps, graphs, and other visual materials that are, of course, absent in the audio version.

The content presents a distinctly American perspective, with significant attention given to Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wartime strategy. While this focus is not inherently negative, it is worth noting for those seeking a broader international lens. One engaging element is the inclusion of live audience questions, which adds an interactive and conversational feel.

The series benefits from having multiple lecturers, each covering different aspects of the war. Topics range from Japanese internment camps and D-Day to the home front in England, rationing, and wartime propaganda, offering a variety of perspectives within the overarching theme.
