"Clear...isn't clear?" "No, it hasn't been for a long time."
Sam follows Kendra down, throwing himself from the same spot she did and into the water. Here he is grabbed by Wrks who bring him to the Widow, a notorious criminal who deals with black veils. He brings her the Baxter veil and she tells him her motivations behind what she does, how she once was a wife and a mother and now she is a criminal. She discusses watching her son crush a spider with his foot in a park, and how humanity has become like the spider, unaware of the foot about to press down on their heads. She then shows Sam that even his choice to use clear isn't actually showing the world as it is. The real world shown is bleak and grey, the Wrks are simply undocumented humans who are promised freedom but instead this is their reality and nothing again is truly as it seems. This issue didn't hit me in the feels as much as issue 4 did but it does seem to be ramping up to a pretty big conclusion so I look forward to seeing where it is going to go.
The flow of the story keeps you rivetted to the images and a constant churning of the gut for what's coming next. It keeps moving at full throttle with a perfect mix of tension and thought-provoking moments. The world continues to feel both familiar and strange, as Snyder digs deeper into themes of identity and how we see the world around us. The characters grow more complex, and there are plenty of twists to keep you guessing. The art keeps reeling reeling you into this cyberpunk universe, making everything feel intense and immersive. There are shades of the Matrix movies which keep coming to mind as pages are turned. Packed so much into such a short piece. For people who are into sci-fi with a strong emotional core, this series is definitely worth reading.
And then, suddenly, it's all over. Everything is okay. Because I did it. I escaped. I jumped just before the fire got me. I can still hear it raging, high above. Screams. Things cracking. But down here, in the blue, I’m safe. We're safe. Me and Baxter. The danger has passed. We made it onto one of the boats. We're sailing away...
I have had a little break from my comiXology original Scott Snyder comics but now have the free time to come back to them.
Clear it is a noir style murder mystery set in a dystopian future where people us 'veils' to hide the real world and see what they want to see instead.
Former policeman and current Private Eye, Sam Dunes, prefers to stay 'clear' and see the world how it is. His work is usually simple investigations, following husbands who prefer to 'veil' their wives into someone or something else.
His world is turned upside down by the apparent suicide of his ex-wife. After finding her message, that she'd been killed, he is on the hunt for the perpetrators. The investigation leads him to being attacked by a mysterious stranger with yellow eyes who looks shockingly like him. Fighting for survival, Sam now has the police after him and is running out of places to hide and acquaintances to turn to.
Jumping into the river, a seemingly unsurvivable feat, is his only option and it soon seems like the end of our protagonist. However, rescue comes from an unexpected source and many truths come to light.
This is very good and right up my street. The juxtaposition between the classic noir PI styling and narration with the dystopian dying world hidden by advancing technology is very intriguing and I look forward to the final issue. 5 stars.
It all comes down to this. Dunes meets The Widow and finds out what got his ex-wife killed and how the World really operates the Veils. And Dunes plans to bring the whole thing crashing down.
Cyberpunk-noir to die for ! The most important part is it makes sense. It reflects a real point of view ,well written, and reflects how a lot of people view life.
I'll be leaving my final thoughts of those series on issue "#6" but know (since I read the collected issues of this) that I think this series was a masterpiece. 10/10
We meet the leader of the Black Veil business, The Widow. I thought it was funny that she wears a long red veil that would be cumbersome in real life. We also learn that being "clear" is itself a veil and that Kendra's program, Baxter (named after the son she and Dunes lost in an accident - #issue 2) is meant to destroy both veil and clear technologies to real the decaying, unkempt real, real world.
