Johan Harmenberg had left his native Sweden because he had "given up" on serious competitive fencing. But when he came to MIT, he met an innovative coach - the late Eric Sollee. Scribbling on a napkin in a Cambridge bar, Eric, Johan, and the other MIT fencers sketched the "Three Conjectures" of a new fencing paradigm" - a way to force a more skillful opponent to play your game. On his return to Sweden, Johan developed it into an art and a science, then put it into effect with a vengeance. Despite being snubbed by the Swedish authorities because of his unorthodox style, he won the World Championship in 1977 and the Olympic Gold Medal in 1980. In this groundbreaking book, Johan reveals his methods, showing how to neutralize the superior technique of even the best classical fencers. Plus Olympic Silver Medalist Bjorne Vaggoe adds his personal application of the new paradigm and Geoff Pingree tells how it was applied with stunning success at MIT.
As a classically trained fencer who teaches a largely classical style of epee, I approached this book with very mixed feelings—especially as I read the author's assertion that he is personally responsible (in large part) for the death of classical epee.
As I got into the book, patterns began to emerge in the actions of the opponents of my students. I believe that a majority of American epeeists use at least some of the ideas presented here, but most of them are either just doing what they are told by their coaches or are mimicking the actions of high-level fencers. But now I finally begin to see the rationale behind the actions of these epeeists—even if they don't themselves see.
And having seen, I can begin to know my enemy. There are elements of epee 2.0 that I will weave into my teaching, but there are also many things I will leave in the book.
The book is oddly organized and could benefit from a better editor. The books needlessly uses a lot of jargon and abbreviations. Still, this is a must-read for any advanced epeeist or epee coach.
Epee 2.5: The New Paradigm Revised and Augmented
