Me gustó mucho.

The hero of In the Prince's Bed, Alec Black, earl of Iversley, is the unacknowledged bastard of the Prince Regent, future George IV. In this respect, the meaning of the title might be a vague reference to his now deceased mother's youthful error. Or, more convincingly, it might be just a nice-sounding phrase picked at random by someone who took one look at the summary's first sentence. Thank God I don't judge a book by its cover, or its title. I love Sabrina Jeffries' writing, and I didn't regret giving one of her earlier Regency series a try.

Three words come to mind to describe her stories: refreshing, delightful, and balanced. Indeed, she may not be the funniest romance writer out there, or the one with the most beautiful style, or the one to weave the most passionate and powerful plots, but neither is she lacking in any of these domains. So, for me, her romance represents the perfect mix. Balance is what I believe in. Balance is what I strive for. I particularly admire how she manages to make the main romantic relationship balanced while remaining within the codes of romance, thus embodying in my opinion the most positive new trend in modern romance, which aims at leaving behind once and for all such "old skool" shadows as double standards, the heroine's exaggerated innocence, or the hero's over-the-top, sometimes brutal willfulness.
The first time she'd seen the naked figures in contorted poses, she'd briefly thought them pictures of Greek sport. After all, the Greeks had performed their sports naked, and the captions―things like "A Wild Ride" and "The Sideward Thrust"―had sounded vaguely athletic.

With Sabrina Jeffries, we're as far as possible from the woman who "lets the man do all these things to her" because she loves him. Though Katherine Merivale, heroine of In the Prince's Bed, is still a virgin (it's the early 19th century, after all), she becomes instantly aware of her own desires as she meets our hero, and never once ends up following his cue instead of her own impulses. As for Alec, we're equally far from the hard-nosed man who's so intent on curbing his feelings he won't even be amiable... something I cannot imagine any woman in her sane mind to fall for, incidentally.
"Seduction is when a man coerces a woman into saying yes to sharing his bed." He drew her close, then bent his head to whisper, "Making love is when she says yes because she wants to be there."

On the contrary, Jeffries' hero is hell-bent on winning the fiery Miss Merivale's favour, for reasons entirely honorable, if not very romantic. The author's intelligence is to use this subtle distinction to stir up trouble between our two characters, while slowly tightening the noose that will lead to the climax. By mistaking Alec for a rake, Katherine proves both that she's not fool enough to be charmed by any attractive, insistent fellow, and that her own judgment isn't as sharp, nor her knowledge of men as extensive, as she wishes it was. In amusing contrast with many romance plots and common stereotypes about men and women, Ms. Jeffries has imagined Alec as a man desperate to marry, and Katherine as a woman resigned.

4.5⭐
This book was excellent! I laughed a lot about their conversations and some very silly and funny things that happened.
The hero was lying through his teeth and the angst you get waiting for him to tell the truth makes you want to pull your hair. But I could not not like him. He was a wicked sweetheart! And the heroine was very strong.
Only the deception makes me not give this book a 5 star rating.
I can't wait to read the next books!

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋💋
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥
Humor: Yes

(These are all personal preference on a scale of 1-5 (yours ratings may vary depending what gives you feels and how you prefer you sex scenes written, etc) except the Steam Scale which follows our chart from The Ton and the Tartans facebook group.)

Basic plot
Katherine has been unofficially betrothed to Sydney since childhood and she’s ready for him to make it official. Alec is in need of an heiress. While it’s not common knowledge, his half brother informs him of Katherine’s fortune upon her marriage and he sets her in his sights. Alec convinces Katherine to embark on a fake flirtation to force Sydney into proposing.

Give this a try if you want:
- Hero with daddy issues – he is a bastard of the Regent and was abused by his ‘father’, ending with his destruction of the finances and estate that was entailed to him
- Regency time period – this book takes place in 1820
- You are okay with a jerk hero/jealous hero – Alec comes off as the stereotypical alphahole – he is rather pushy, arrogant, he knows what’s best for the heroine despite her thinking otherwise
- You are okay with dubcon coming into to play – Alec doesn’t really listen to “no”, and keeps pushing until she relents
- Fake relationship trope
- Mid steam – this is typical Jeffries with a solid 3 steam scale and some kisses

My thoughts:
I just thought this story was all right. There was quite a bit of deception on the part of the hero here and that’s something that is usually a huge story turn off for me.

Alec has a few things he’s hiding, but he’s desperate for funds to restore his estate, so he’ll do anything to keep it from his soon to be wife until the money is secure. He’s also convinced it won’t be an issues once Katherine finds out and is mad because he’ll just sexually satisfy her until she forgets :P

Katherine I felt bad for – her father’s debts loom over her and her mother is a lot to handle. She thinks she’s in love with Sydney, but Sydney doesn’t treat her as anything special. She longs for love and adventure and Alec definitely provides that.

Sydney has a bit of his own story line – it’s obvious he has feelings for one of his male friends, but I don’t recall anything being resolved with that by the end of the book – I was curious about it because Sydney wasn’t a bad man – he was basically forced into this childhood engagement just as Katherine was. I’m wondering if the future 2 books of the series will bring him up at all.

There were some funny parts in this story, my favorite being that Katherine’s mother tried to speak French but usually butchered her phrases into something embarrassing.

#RetoRita4 #RitaSabrina

Read the whole reviev in English and Croatian on http://kljuczaknjigu.blogspot.hr/2016/05/reviewrecenzija-sabrina-jeffries-in.html

Don't you just love the charming way these kind of novels capture your attention? I can't resist the way those mischievous heroines innocently bat their eyelashes while stepping outside of the line of what it is considered as a proper behavior. They make us feel restless, wild and even daring. More than we usually are, anyway. We follow them on their journey rooting for their ideas and supporting their sometimes not very bright decisions. We want to be them, because they are strong women fighting for their rights in times when women were not seen as equal to men. Sometimes we find ourselves in them, and they give us hope in a better tomorrow.

Heroine: Katherine Merivale, 22. Nickname: Kit. An heiress who will not receive her inheritance until she marries. She and her family have little money to live on in the meantime.

Hero: Alexander Black, about 28. Nickname: Alec. Earl of Iversley. He needs to marry an heiress to pay off debts and restore the struggling estate he inherited.

Date: 1813

How they meet: They meet at a ball after he eavesdrops on a conversation between her and her boyfriend. He seeks her out knowing she is an heiress (something her family has kept quiet to ward off fortune hunters).

What happens: Katherine’s conversation with her boyfriend reveals the man’s reluctance to become engaged or to even show her affection. Katherine is being pushed by her mother to marry soon so they can get access to Katherine’s fortune, which they need to pay off debts. Alec reveals himself after Katherine’s boyfriend leaves and questions his attachment to her. He suggests that the man needs a push and offers to help Katherine make him jealous.

Verdict: Even knowing from the start that Alec was a fortune hunter, I was rooting for him since her boyfriend was so obviously wrong for her, and not just his personality. There is an ethical dilemma about doing the wrong thing for the right reasons and it is interesting to watch his feelings evolve and his struggles with that. The hero and heroine had good chemistry. It was a little hard to believe she didn’t realize that . I wish there had been a bit more humor, but overall it was good.

Steam-level: Steamy and explicit

I’ve had this book on my TBR and in my iBooks library for quite a while now... and I’m glad I finally decided to read it. It turned out to be a light read, with some angst but nothing overly unexpected.

Alec, the hero, is the bastard son of Prinny, although nearly no one knows about it. His mother was married (to an Earl) at the time of her affair, so everyone in society knows of him only as the Earl of Iversley since his “father’s” death. The old Earl left his estate in extreme disrepair and debt and now Alec needs to marry an heiress to restore his financial situation. He is made aware that the heroine, Catherine, will inherit £100,000 when she marries, but that fact is largely kept a secret, and Catherine doesn’t know that he knows. So begins the story of how he convinces her to marry him, largely through seduction and deception. Catherine also has another suitor contending for her hand, which makes the story all the more interesting. Catherine is prone to think the worst of Alec at every opportunity, and he’s afraid to tell her the truth about his situation. They do eventually work through their issues and get a really sweet HEA.

Safe; hero is portrayed as a manwhore in society, but he isn’t one at all. Heroine has OM who she has planned to marry for a long time, and thinks that she loves him, but he was dragging his feet about proposing to her. She does kiss OM once, but it really was more of an experiment which turned out badly. Actually, the story of her other suitor was a nice addition to the story, I wish we got more time with him.

Great book, although the deception part had me wondering how the man would redeem himself. Coincidentally, this is the 2nd book I've finished today that involves lies and deception and it unnerves me, but those lies keep me turning page after page. I don't want to be the cause of spoilers since I'm spoiler allergic myself. I liked the character consistency and development, the way they are always decisive and a how a cruel intention backfired and reformed a character. I have to admit Alec isn't the usual rakehell chasing skirts and I give him credit for that, it's a breath of fresh air, and there is nothing to reform. I also liked the curious virgin the heroine is, she's one of those adventurous but not dimwitted females, she's adamant about propriety but curiosity didn't kill the cat, it pleasured her.

I had mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I liked the true attraction the characters had and the interesting past of the hero with horses. The side characters also had interesting drama too. Lots of good elements I just thought Iversley’s secret took too long to come out and it spoiled some of the romance overall. Still a decent read as I’ve come to expect from Jeffries but not my favorite of hers.

I read this one a while ago and honestly didn't remember it at all. So I went back and skimmed through it to jog my memory.
No wonder I forgot it. It just didn't grab me. Not sure I liked either character overmuch and am thinking this author may not be for me. Way too CR in its style- behaviour of the MCs was a bit unbelievable, tbh.
I will try another in this series, although my GR friends seem quite divided in their opinions of the other books.
