Rate this book
School’s out for the summer, and middle school dean Siobhan O’Hurlihy just wants to relax. She wants to drink some microbrews, hang out at the lake, and go for a jog every once in a while. However, when she discovers a dead body, she finds herself wrapped up in a murder investigation. The magical powers that she inherited from her mother have been a hindrance in the past, but now she is beginning to learn how to use them. Siobhan finds they might help her see who is lying, who is keeping secrets, and why her former student had to die. With help from a Raven with a filthy vocabulary, and her crew from Polk Middle School, she is going to fight to make her little Colorado town safe again. Or at least as safe as it was before.

Ess Harelson

Ess Harelson grew up in the mountains of Colorado, in a town not-unlike Goldburgh, the fictional home of Siobhan O'Hurlihy, the sleuth in her Ms. O Mystery series. Now she lives where the air is thicker and the real estate prices are a little more realistic. She writes paranormal cozy mysteries and still works in a middle school. Every day she hears something where she thinks, “I’m going to steal that and put it in a story.”
Ess lives with her brilliant, yet self-effacing husband and her two children, with their cat, Alice, who has trained all of them to solve problems, as if they live in some giant psych lab run by cats. She dreams of one day having a Victorian conservatory for her exotic plants, with a phantom gardener to maintain it.
For another side of Ess, look for YA novels and nonfiction under her alter ego, Susan Harelson.

Looks like a fun series to dig into.

What I like about this book…I like Siobhan. She's a good person. She doesn't judge her students just because many of them are from “the wrong side of the tracks”. She gets to know them as individual kids. She sees auras and can tell if someone is lying or telling the truth, which is very helpful when dealing with her middle school kids. She's still very confused about her so-called magic. The only thing she knows about her family is what her aunt has recently told her. She knows that her mother walked out on her and her dad when she was 6 or 7 years old, but she never knew that her mother was a pretty powerful witch. She never had a really stable childhood because her dad was an alcoholic and things depended on whether her father was drinking or not. She's rather childlike in her relationships with friends and with men. Her best relationships seem to be with the kids in her school, rather than with adults. Some of the adults seem to be more calculating than the kids are. Siobhan has a hard time with male relationships. She judges men on how they look (nice biceps, muscles, etc). She does have trouble with men and electronics, so maybe she'll learn to be more perceptive in her relationships and more careful at blocking her unfortunate ability to “fry” every piece of electronic equipment she comes near. All in all, I have enjoyed reading this book. Siobhan is such a curious and naive character that she's just likable. I love the raven, swearing and all. I'd like to get to know both Siobhan and the raven better. I've already downloaded the next book.

New author for me New series to read

I really enjoyed this book. Siobhan is a new witch or mage still trying to learn to control her powers. She has a familiar that is a Raven that is somewhat obnoxious. She kind of likes a policeman Rick but I think she is afraid to admit it. She can see people's auras. Oh did I mention she finds a dead body and is intent on solving the murder even though she has been warned to stay out of it? Read the book to find out what happens to her. You might be in for a surprise.

Siobhan and the Raven!

Siobhan has a special ability and A very special pet. A huge Raven can communicate with her mind to mind. She is beginning to find out about her supernatural abilities. When she discovers the dead body if a young woman on a morning jog, she becomes involved in the search for the killer. Using her ability to read aura's she is able to find out who is not telling the truth. Guess who the killer is!
