Colby woke up with confidence thinking he had a great time with some girl at a party, but it quickly shattered after receiving an anonymous message showing a photo of two boys making out—not just any boys—but of him and Ezra Dickinson, his archenemy.

Shell-shocked, he finally decided to get his revenge. Prove to him his dominance. As he confronts Ezra about the loathsome photo, he instead finds himself in front of Ezra again, pinned to a wall, fighting for his breath in the heat of the moment . . . and surprisingly enjoying it.

Confused with everything, can he easily forget every humiliating thing he did to him? How will he succeed in his revenge now?

Omg how theee heck do I even rate this? This was hella funny, hella cute, hella wholesome, hella OTT and I freaking loved it all 🥲🥲 if you are in the mood for some borderline-problematic, highschool craziness, Wattpad-style MM romance, look no further

Also I'm rating it 4 stars purely for the entertainment 😂

This is not a good book, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. It’s a ridiculous, over-the-top joke of a story. Paraphrasing Ezra, I don’t know if the story is dumb or an unappreciated genius 💁🏻‍♀️

It’s seriously all kinds of random, but also endearing, cute, wholesome, not toxic, just fluffy and uplifting. I don’t know, this is a book about the most Himbo cinnamon roll to ever exist, and his broody, sad, lovely love interest. It features both horrible parents and the coolest parents you’ve ever read. Like, please only read this if you don’t want to think and just want to vibe, otherwise you might end up hating it.

I actually believe this interaction between Finley (Colby's BFF) and Colby defines the whole vibe of the book:“Wow, you sound like a detective right now.” “Thanks. I watched Detective Pikachu last night and picked up a few things."

Everybody finding out their best friend is gay like:

description"/

“They took it as a joke.”
“I know. They all think it’s hilarious. You can tell that none of them have been through trauma because none of them are funny.”

I officially hate the name Colby. Idk why but it irritated the shit out of me. Also Colby himself irritated me. He's so unserious. I think he is dumb on purpose just to annoy everyone. Actually they're all dumb. This book is an unhinged mess. I almost dnfed a bunch of times at the beginning. It got semi serious halfway through but the serious thing is basically only a boogeyman that is vaguely used as a threat. But the clowns grew on me and I laughed a few times. So all in all, I don't regret picking up Enemies with Benefits. Highly recommend if you love train wrecks you can't look away from.

If you'd like to read another unhinged circus act, Crossing Swords has the same vibes.

I’m honestly surprised by some of the reviews on this book because I absolutely loved it. I could not put it down to save my life. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much while reading a book. Colby is an absolute delight!! I will admit there were some instances where his cluelessness had me rolling my eyes but he was so endearing and his thought process was so fun to read. I thought the author was very clever. I can even overlook the fact that I’m not sure if they live in America or not because I feel like a lot of words and phrases were from the UK. I do wish there was an epilogue so we can see their future and I really wished there would have been some retribution for Joanna because she’s awful but other than that I really enjoyed this book and would read it again.

Didn’t even make it 30 pages in before DNF. Truly awful, I haven’t read a story that poorly written and cringeworthy since I was a teenager. -10/5, do not bother. Thank you Kindle Unlimited for not making me pay for this garbage lol.

I think it's a good example of so bad it becomes good.

The characters weren't always consistent and did a complete 180 . It lacks quite a bit of depth considering the kind of themes that were hinted at, even mentioned at times, but in the end never properly adressed. Everything is very over the top but there's a clear distinction between the first and second half of the book, or maybe I just enjoyed it for what it was by then Idk.

Colby is one of the dumbest character I've ever seen in my entire life and Ezra perfectly describes him as "dumb in a very endearing way". For the first half of the book it feels like a trainwreck waiting to happen. It kind of is but at the same time once you get to the second half it almost feels likes it was intentional all along. So I don't know if this book was a massive troll or just unintentionally funny but at least it was entertaining. Every interactions between Colby's parents and Colby/Ezra was the highlight of this book, especially the first time he meets his father :')

Definitely don't recommend it if you want a serious read or to find a new favourite, but if you have KU and want to turn your brain off that's an option with some funny moments.

Ok, here's the deal. This book is trash, but it's adorable trash. The writing isn't there, the plot is mostly there, but the characters are there and back again!

Seriously. These kids will live in my head rent free forever.
-Colby is the most airbrained of himbos but has the biggest heart and is like the best golden retriever boy you can imagine.
-Ezra is super serious about life and grades and football and has a lot of trauma by being forced into the closest by his asshole dad, but he is such a loving guy and is so so cute with Colby.
-Finley is like, the kind of bestfriend that teases you relentlessly but will bite anyone else's head off if they do. He's intense about the things and people he likes.
-Sophie is miss religious trauma who went to a gay conversion camp over the summer because her pastor father found out she was lesbian and now feels like she needs to evangelize to her gay friends and is a super big jerk. But like, sweetheart Colby doesn't give up on her and you see how scared she is and... This book isn't about her, but maybe it should be? Cause that's SUCH a story, and one that's I'd love to read!

But, like a said, this book wasn't totally there. It doesn't make that much sense from moment to moment and slides by on "Colby is literally such an airhead" juices.

It also could have benefitted from a line editor, but we will forgive it.

ALSO! This is quite the spicy book, so if you are a closed-door romance girly, run for the hills. But, the sex is really cute and well done for those who like that.

Overall, I kinda loved it despite myself? I feel like Mr. Darcy because on most counts I shouldn't have even finished it, but it was just so pure and sweet and HILARIOUS.
You've been warned. If you are in for a good time, but a wild and far from perfect time, then read this book.

i was going to give it one, but the second half was pretty funny. there was a lot going on and it felt a little all over the place. i think it had too much for one book to simply cover but it wasn’t overtly awful.

I was surprised by how much this book managed to pack in plot wise without feeling rushed.

A nice little romance with antics and tropes aplenty.

DNF around the uhhh 40% or so mark? I don't care to re-download to check lmao.

Okay so firstly, you should know this book has smut. A lot of it. Out of the scenes I actually cared to read rather than try to find the thin plot of this plot what plot book, there was maybe one smut scene that actually felt more appropriate for the YA characters being treated with new adult tropes. Hence my tagging it New Adult.

Secondly, you should know this book is definitely written by someone in the UK based on their slang (an English person, if I had to guess), but they know basically jack shit about American football or American high schools beyond what the pervasiveness of American media thrust upon the entire world has convinced them it is like. Also, I don't think they really did any research on American football, despite the entire set of characters playing or being tied to the sport in some way. It took until the 40% ish mark to learn the playing positions of the two protagonists. Zero mention of the high school name, their team colors, their mascot, their rival teams, any real specifics to their training et al. You know, basic shit for a sports story. Even sports romances usually give readers the rundown so they can place the setting. I still don't even know which state in the US this is set in, which wouldn't matter if this wasn't set in the US but kind of does matter for American readers because of how our states operate like little nations thinly tied together by various agreements.

Thirdly, this needs an editor. A team of editors, even. Also beta and sensitivity readers. Not gonna get too much into detail here cuz I don't care to pull quotes at this point, but the dialogue, interpersonal thoughts, and everything else didn't mesh very well. The tone/vibe/whatever you call it for a story was all over the place and I really struggled to see what the "point" was of the story, thematically speaking. It wanted to be deep and thoughtful at moments and then would do something to completely contradict it and it got jarring very fast. Characterizations were also all over the place and seemed inconsistent. Character arcs can't be propped up solely by plot twists and sudden expository dumps!

Anyway, read at your own risk. Primarily the entertainment that drove me to read so much of it in the first place was knowing it would probably be a bit crappy + the continuous bonkersness of someone writing about something they'd clearly not researched. I suppose Americans have had it coming for all of our terrible Harry Potter fanfics that know nothing about the UK.

I loved this book. Ezra was struggling with so much, and was so brave to just be himself. Colby was a bit innocent and naive at times but it was sweet, the confusion of his feelings for Ezra and the understanding of them, it was so good to watch. These two deserved the world and more, loved them

I couldn’t get past the first chapter. Poor quality writing, stilted dialogue. And if we’re talking about college age people, maybe call them men and not boys.

First things first - this is a Wattpad book, and I read it on the app. So if there are differences between the original on Wattpad and what was published, I am unaware of them.

I will say that this book definitely feels very Wattpad-y. The writing is pretty cringy and bad at times, but I can look past that for this absolute classic of a story.

This story is funny, silly, stupid, cute, heartwarming, angsty, sexy, beautiful, and simply iconic. I don't remember when I read this for the first time, but I was younger, and I remember loving it. It was exactly my genre of story, and likely genuinely shaped the way and the stories I write myself today.

I love the characters in this story, there are so many, but they're all realistic, important, well-developed and well thought through. Although, I do find myself thinking that Finley, as much as I love him, has a new personality every time we meet him. Colby is so iconic, too, that I will forever associate that name with this book and this character. He's so endearingly dense.

The ending was slower for me to get through, but I think it's just because the angst was over. And I did love the bonus Drunk In Love chapter, it was so well written compared to the rest it was shocking and provided an important and excellent context to the events that went on before the story started.

that's all for now, folks

quotes i remember
"if anything, his name should be Ezra Dick-in-Colby."
"all he wanted to do, was be in between those thick thighs."

This was cute. Really cute. The way the story progressed and showed their gradual love and feelings for each other was incredible.

The author has really carefully considered the setting of the book in terms of the themes, the language, the personality on characters. It’s set around teenagers and high school and every little thing contributes to that. It’s really well written around the theme. For example, the language was typical of what you’d hear from teenagers now.

All in all, I found it really funny mostly. There were a generous amount of comedic moments in the story, alongside the angst and emotions that come with being a teenager, being in love, and being gay. Each theme was written again with the idea of teenage life in mind.

However, I didn’t really find it to be so much of an ‘enemies-to-lovers’ trope. It was more, one guy hated the other but that other guy was secretly pining. There were two moments if I remember where the hatred was two-sided. But the rest of the time, there was hatred from one and love from another.

I also found the start quite slow. Maybe it’s just me but the first 100 odd pages I got quite bored and found myself unwilling to continue in that sitting, but around the 70 page mark, I really got into it.

All in all, great read. As a teenager at the time of reading, I really felt I could sympathise and relate to the characters and situations unfolding.

Read the version on wattpad and almost dnf’ed it but it turned out to be Wholesome🥹

Ezra is so strong. Any other teen who went through what he did would have become self-loathing and angry towards everyone around them. i’m glad everything worked out well for him.

Colby. oh bless his himbo bisexual heart! such an adorable but dumb character. i think he might be adhd tho.

Sofie. Her character arc was insane. i almost didn’t pity her but in a way i get her, still doesn’t justify her actions. which was stupid asf.

Finley is my pride and joy in this book. the brains to Colby. need someone like him in my life.

Brent. Another adorable bottom in the book. Awesome character.

Loved Colby’s parents dynamic and the comedy in this book was really good. i know the book was written like three years ago but i really wish the author would go back and edit it. The writing wasn’t the best and the little spelling errors, but at least the entirety,plot-wise, didn’t send me packing.

Could be better

I don't think as a 41 year old, I was the target demographic for this book. It is very immature and cringe worthy at times. I like the storyline and think it could have been great with some editing. I don't get why some days were drawn out over three or four chapters and then by the end of the book, they have somehow been together for a few months. Doesn't make any sense. Also, I think the author should have stuck with one POV or made the whole book dual POV instead of 95% of it being Colby's POV and some random chapters being Ezra's. Also, makes the sequel told from Ezra's POV seem superfluous. Anyway, in the end, it wasn't a favorite but I think it could be really great with some paring down and editing. On a side note, the author was obviously British so I'm not sure why the book didn't have an English setting instead of the US. No one talks/thinks in UK English in the US.

- i appreciated the TW at the beginning bc it was heavy with religious and homophobic plot lines that can be triggering for some
- out of the gate it was hot and heavy
- each character has a very distinct personality and they seem like real teenagers
- i love the different reactions to coming out all from accepting to being kicked out. this is how the real world is, a spectrum of acceptance.

this book was the perfect amount of steamy and romantic. the only thing i didn’t like was that the football part was a bit unrealistic (no one except QBs are practicing throwing the ball and why were there no games ever??? but that was barely a blip of the entire book. just my thoughts as an athlete lol)

i HIGHLY recommend. i finished the entire thing in two days.

This was written pretty badly ngl. Also the British slang when it's supposed to be an American setting... anyways idk if it was done on purpose to reflect the main character's "himbo" personality but the narrative was all over the place. I felt it was fragmented and nonsensical in a lot of places. However, overall I enjoyed it still because it had its wholesome moments and the main pair was still cute together. There's a free bonus chapter and one that is separate to buy from the book. The free extra was nice since it gave an actual preface to the book.

Just hilarious. It was just so silly and unrealistic sometimes but idk once I started not taking it too seriously, I really liked it. And honestly reading Colbys thought process, his logic and the silly things he ended up saying didn't come across forced and kinda made sense?

In other books I've read where one of the main characters was supposed to be not that bright (don't know how to say it differently), the things they said just didn't at all match with the inner monologues and came out of nowhere. That wasn't the case here imo and it really made me laugh. So yeah.

No offence to the author, but I wanted to DNF this every time I read part of it. It felt like a Wattpad fanfic.

Why was the MC fine for the first part of the book, then super “dumb”ed down for the rest?

What’s with chapter 30? Incorrect grammar and a double hyphen? Who proofread this? Not mentioning the inconsistencies, I gave up counting them. Literally no mention of Colby having a cat until the end?

Didn’t like the storyline or the writing style. Why change perspective so infrequently and randomly? Sorry but no

DNF-

:0 I’m sorry, did a child write this?

On a more considerate note:

This writer has potential, it’s easy to tell. They have good writing instincts, but forget that they’re writing a novel, not some essay. Essay-like writing can be really cool with fiction when blended properly. But…this was pretty bad. Mix in the obviously elementary reactions of our characters and the childishness of the dialogue? Wow. It wasn’t good.

Learning this was originally a Wattpad book places everything in perspective doesn’t it?

On to the next I suppose.

A wattpad bl masterpiece

In my 7 years on the platform I had never read such a good BL story (and, trust me, I'm really into bl)

It's funny, it's original (trust mez, it is), it's got great characters that add a lot to the plot, it's very well written for it to be a wattpad book. Not your classic enemies-to-lovers story

There are no useless characters, even the "mean girls/antagonists" are very well written and are not bad without a reason.

I loved every thing about this book, I don't think there's a single thing to dislike! I'd love to recommend this book to the rom com lovers, the lgbtq romancers, to people who like slice of life. I gave my rating a 5 star because it gave so many intense moments, and that brought excitement to me. I hope my feelings towards this book can give you an opportunity to read this book!

Colby and Ezra are enemies, after Ezra slept with Colby's girlfriend. And then Colby receives a photo from an unknown number showing he and Ezra making out. Colby decides to get his revenge on Ezra by... seducing him.

This is an odd book. Tonally it's not sure where it is, mixing broad comedy with unexpectedly spicy scenes and a serious subplot about conversion therapy. I didn't entirely buy into the characters. Needed a good editor and a few more drafts.

omg this book is like a fever dream. why are there so many exclamation points? why is it like super american and then the most random british english is just thrown in there? (“revising” for tests, “good at sport” instead of “good at sports,” “jumper” instead of “sweatshirt”…) where is this author from??

that was crazy. i’m not even sure why i read the whole thing but the characters were kind of endearing? despite the… everything?
