The Fire Island Ice Queen

Rate this book
College law student, Connor, is a bit pretentious, high-strung and what some might describe as being cold as ice. After catching his boyfriend cheating on him and then being dumped, Connor decides to take his best friend Byron up on his offer for a summer gaycation experience to Fire Island.

While at Fire Island, Connor reevaluates his identity and goes through a deep soul searching experience to truly understand himself. While on vacation, he befriends a stranger named Lawrence, who encourages Connor to open up more and become lively. Lawrence proposes that Connor completes a series of wild, fun tasks, which he dubs as the Fire Island Ice Queen Challenge to get Connor to come out of his shell more. Will this frivolous and boisterous vacation at Fire Island be enough to melt the heart of this Ice Queen?

The four stars I give to this was based totally on vibes...

Was this the best written story? Uh no, to be honest I was worried that I might have to dnf it at the beginning but I'm glad I kept going. This honestly had the bones to be a five star read but it really needed to be edited. Outside of all that, I enjoyed it.

So this book was gay. Not just regular gay, but over the top almost camp gay. But this did not have any sex described on page. Just mentions of having sex.

In here we have Connor, who apparently was a prude who was cheated on and dumped. His good friend Byron and friends take him to fire island for a gaycation. Luckily, I live around the area and knew what that area was. Also, apparently college kids these days have lots and lots of money.

Conner meets Lawrence and they come up with a plan to get Conner all free and more gay. Conner gets blacked out drunk, does a drag queen volleyball game, twerks, and sings karaoke. Lots of things happen, then the ex tells Lawrence that they are getting back together and Lawrence leaves without talking to Connor.

They never exchanged info so Connor and Byron go all romcom and film an Instagram message that somehow gets to Lawrence and they kiss and ride off into the sunset.

You really just need to be able to turn your brain off for this one, but its worth it.

What a fun book. This was my first book by this author and I will certainly check out some others. Conner does come off as a bit of an ice queen at first, but I quickly grew to love him. This is the kind of story that brightens up your day. It’s perfect for reading after you’ve read a heavy book.

I am not a fan of the cheating trope so I was glad that wasn't the case here. I really liked the mention of the fact that the cheater puts the blame of their actions on their partner because it is so realistic. This cheat's partner and the main character is Connor, who leaves home for a trip to Fire Island with his best friend, Byron, after his breakup. At this place, Connor is challenged with the namesake of the story's title, the Fire Island Ice Queen challenge, posed to him by Lawrence. I loved the sweet relationship between these two individuals, both poles apart from each other but fitting together so perfectly well. Never been to a beach but this sure was a "beach read". This story was fun and I found myself laughing at a lot of moments even though the beginning was a bit painful for me. Had been reading a lot of intense books back to back so this was a welcome change. The ending was heartwarming and I loved how Connor gradually progressed from being uptight to enjoying life. Healing is a process and Connor's character arc shows exactly that. Definitely recommended.

If catty were a cologne, Connor would reek of it. The moment we meet him, he’s judging another person with the sharpness of a Ginsu knife. This is a character flaw that Connor seems to embrace with mixed emotions. He is proud of his appearance, his toned body, and his amazingly handsome boyfriend. At the same time, he feels self-conscious and projects his insecurities unto others. His blunt observations are a defense mechanism. Naturally, this inflated sense of superiority and outward Hubris invites a Karmic backlash—a poetic turnabout that lights the fuse to this firecracker of a narrative.

The devoted boyfriend, Derrick, turns out to be an utter cad. During what was supposed to be a date with Connor, Derrick sneaks off to enjoy a heated tryst with another man in a bathroom stall—while Connor is in the next stall. Shock and awe! In the explosive verbal exchange that follows, Derrick ends their relationship and explains that it was Connor’s pretentiousness and judgmental behavior that drove the wedge between them. In an odd turnabout, the cheater scores an emotional point by forcing Connor to examine his own personality flaws. After this intense emotional tsunami, Fire Island Ice Queen begins in earnest.

Connor’s journey of self-discovery begins with a ritual cleansing of his Instagram—purging all reminders of his former intended. Stage One of the healing process. Enter Byron, the unabashedly quirky best friend. Stage Two. Byron arrives to take Connor away from the unraveled tapestry of his love life. The adventure begins. Byron is the manifestation of the true best friend, not allowing Connor to sink back into his self-imposed exile. Pushing through the emotional morass, Byron proves to be the anchor that Connor needs. His task is not an easy one, but he persists. After forcing Connor to attend a small family gathering, Byron sheepishly asks him to come on vacation with him—to Fire Island.

It is during this jaunt that Connor comes into his own. Amid a bacchanalian festival, Connor evolves into a new man and tries to leave the past behind. The narrative is well written, packed full of emotion, and guaranteed to captivate the reader. To provide further plot exposition would spoil what is a great story.

THE FIRE ISLAND ICE QUEEN is about a college law student, Conner, who catches his boyfriend cheating on him. Instead of trying to save their relationship, his boyfriend dumps him because Conner is ‘too high-strung, ice cold and a bit pretentious’. His best friend Byron offers to take him to Fire Island for the summer, along with two other friends, so he can both lighten up and heal from his breakup. At the island, he meets Lawrence, who encourages him to open up and become more lively. They come up with a list of things Connor needs to do to come out of shell and melt his ‘Ice Queen heart’.

I was reading some of the reviews on Goodreads and saw one that said: “You really just need to be able to turn your brain off for this one, but it's worth it.” I really liked that, because it's true in the best way. I think this book was written to enjoy people, to make them forget real life for a little bit and just have some fun with it. Getting to ‘turn off your brain’ for a little while is exactly what most of us need, and it was a pleasure to read this simple but oh so fun story. It's full of over the top but really enjoyable moments (think a drag queen volleyball game, twerking, and karaoke), but it’s also really sweet. I loved the quiet moments between Connor and Lawrence, their simple dates and conversations. The contrast between those moments and the rest of the book made it even nicer to read. And I can’t help but love the huge romcom gesture at the end.

I do have to admit I am personally not a huge fan of the writing style. In my opinion, the many howevers didn’t really seem to match the story’s vibe, and I doubt many people actually talk like that. However (sorry, I had to), Connor (who tells the story) of course might, so let’s say it’s just a personal preference😊

All in all, it’s a very fun story I definitely recommend. It really is worth it!

What a delightful story of self-discovery! The story follows Connor who is a tad stuck up and a bit of a prude, who catches his boyfriend Derrick cheating on him. Connor is then subsequently dumped by the cheating jerk. When Connor’s friends offer to take him to Fire Island to help him forget his woes and speed up the healing process, he agrees. There, he examines his identity and decides he’s not completely happy with how other people see him. So he embarks on a quest to open up more and enjoy life — and to prove to himself that he isn’t the person that others see him as.

I loved how Connor’s character grew throughout the story as he began to discover who he was — and what better place to do it than Fire island? In fact, I thought the book also really captured the magic of Fire Island, which I appreciated. There were plenty of zany antics and witty banter in the story which were a lot of fun, and I caught myself smiling and chuckling on more than one occasion.

I loved the idea of Connor finding himself with the help of someone who sees through Connor’s “icy” facade, and I enjoyed traveling with Connor as he began to open up and blossom.

All in all, this ended up being a sweet and sexy heart-tugger of a love story that I really enjoyed. The fast-paced plot makes for an engaging read, and from the very first chapter, I was fully immersed in the narrative. If you like witty banter and wild, rollicking shenanigans, this is the book for you.

A huge thank you to BookSirens for providing a review copy of this book.

Fire Island Ice Queen by BJ Irons was an absolute blast to read!!! I literally LOVE everything BJ has written and this one is no different! We have Connor, a pretentious law student who has a lot of trouble letting go and having fun. He catching his boyfriend, Derrick, cheating on him and Derrick has the nerve to blame Connor for his indiscretions. Connor decides he needs to get away and have some fun to get his mind off Derrick. What better way to do that than to take a trip to Fire Island with his best friend, Byron. While at Fire Island he meets Lawrence, a quirky fun individual who wants to help Connor to come out of his shell. Lawrence creates the Fire Island Ice Queen Challenge in order to help Connor out of his funk. The antics these men get up to and all the fun they were having had me wishing Fire Island was a real place so I can take a vacation there too!! This book was fun, sweet and charming, lighter on the steam BUT the sweetness made up for that. This book is beautifully written and I haughty recommend everyone pick it up! You will not regret it!!

I received a copy of this book from Book Sirens, and this is my honest review.

POV: 1st Person Single POV

This book is adorable! Connor has just been cheated on and dumped, and come to find out he’s also a little bit uptight and stuffy! He is on a mission to become more self-aware and break out of his pretentious shell.

This story is told primarily from Connor’s POV, with one caveat - one chapter is told from his best friend’s POV because Connor is too drunk. I thought that was clever and adorable - nice touch by the author! But that does mean we don’t get the POV of Lawrence, the gorgeous man set out to help Connor break his uptight streak.

I really enjoyed watching the two MCs become friends first. They had an easy chemistry together - I felt the draw towards each other from the page. This is not a steamy book between the 2 MCs - there is definitely a lot of sex talk and situations, but most are happening off page between other characters.

I loved the ending and how Connor truly put himself out there in order to win Lawrence. They were just adorable! And the connivance for Mitch and Derrick were a guilty pleasure to read as well! Well done!

Cute Story!!!

Cullen, recently out of a 2 year relationship, gay, getting ready to start law school at Georgetown

Lawrence, single, gay, getting ready to start his senior year at Howard University studying Political Science

Derrick, cheater, gay, getting ready to start law school at Georgetown.

Byron, best friend to Cullen, single and ready to mingle, gay, attends the University of Maryland.

The story begins with Cullen catching his boyfriend, Derrick, in flagrante delicto in a bathroom stall at a gay night club. Derrick blames Cullen for his cheating (he says Cullen is pretentious, stuck up and unable to let loose and have fun).

Cullen is totally bummed and when asked to go on a gaycation, with his best friend Byron, he decides to go. He sets out to prove he's not the person Derrick says he is and that's where the fun begins.

This story is sweet... if you are looking for a hot and steamy book, this one probably isn't for you. I enjoyed the story very much and the ending was adorable.

I really enjoyed reading this particular story since it takes place on Fire Island!!! I love how this main character who is considered uptight and very judgmental about everything is convinced by someone to try to loosen up and proposes challenges. A fun read!

This story focuses on Connor who caught his boyfriend having fun with another guy and was dumped because he was uptight and judgmental. His best friend, Byron convinced him to go with him to Fire Island. However, to make things worse, his ex-boyfriend was at Fire Island with the guy he dumped Connor for. But there was this real hot guy named Lawrence who went with his friends because he had gotten out of a relationship and they wanted him to have fun. Connor and Lawrence met and Lawrence proposed a Fire Island challenge to help him loosen up. The question is…does Connor loosen up? That’s for you to pick up the book and read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet, funny story about finding your true self with the help of someone that sees the real you!

That is what Connor experienced when he took his best friend up on his offer to go with them to Fire island after he catches his boyfriend red handed cheating!

This is where he met Lawrence who he befriended at the resort and to get Connor out of his slump and most of all his shell Lawrence sets up a list of five challenges to complete- The Fire Island Ice Queen Challenge- and this is where the sex kitten comes out to play and their journey begins…

I must admit Connor irritated me in the beginning but as he slowly came out of his shell and lowered his walls the true sweet, sexy and playful Connor became quite endearing!

This is a new to me author who I can definitely recommend!

REVIEW ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Fire Island Ice Queen by B J Irons. Connor, a slightly pretentious college student, has just been dumped by his cheating boyfriend. So what better way to shake the relationship blues than a vacation to Fire Island. It is the perfect opportunity for Connor to reevaluate his life. Upon arriving on Fire Island, he meets Lawrence who encourages him to become more adventurous and less inhibited. To achieve this, Lawrence assembles a list of fun tasks he calls the “Fire Island Ice Queen Challenge” in an effort to help Connor out of his shell. Can this wild and liberating holiday melt this Ice Queen’s heart and allow love in?⠀

A magnificent beach read just in time for summer. This sexy and witty story will have you roaring with laughter. As always, B J Irons has created beautiful and well developed characters that you cannot help but love. This book is a little lighter on the steam, but instead has a sweeter, passionate quality. I believe that the appeal to B J Irons writing is that his style is dictated by the story rather than building a story around a style. So whenever you pick up one of his books you can be confident that it will be a unique experience. ⠀

Connor is told he’s pretentious, a snob, and high-strung by his cheating boyfriend. So when his best friend suggests joining him for the Memorial Day weekend at Fire Island, Connor grudgingly decides to go, but he doesn’t think he’ll have much fun, not when his cheating ex shows up with his new boytoy in tow. Ouch.

I must say the blurb got me and the title. I adore stories set at Fire Island, and the author quickly takes us there. The pacing of the novel is spot on. As for Connor’s character arc, this was well put together. There are people out there who aid us, and those who bring out the worst in us, and this is something Connor also deeply assesses.

After Connor is dumped by his boyfriend of 2 years, he goes to Fire Island with friends and meets Lawrence. Lawrence dares him to complete a list of mostly drinking and sexual activities. I found this whole book juvenile for guys graduating college and heading into future careers in law and political science. Connor ran the gamut of emotions in days from anger and depression to wildness and falling in love. I did love the ending though which made me like the book more. If you like a book of just plain good times and young male exploration with no strings attached, this is for you. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my voluntary opinion.

When I started reading The Fire Island Ice Queen I was confronted by a bitchy, temperamental, judgemental main character, Cullen. I thought I had chosen wrongly as it was not my type of story line!

It all changes when Cullen is encouraged to go with his friend Byron and two others for a holiday on Fire Island. There he meets Lawrence on the beach on the first morning and the conversation leads to Lawrence challenging Cullen to break his staid identity with a list of daily challenges.

The challenges are amusing and an attraction slowly blossoms between Cullen and Lawrence.

I enjoyed this book written by B J Irons and would look to read further books by this author.

This is a FUN read without a great deal of depth. Connor is convinced to take the place of someone who cancelled on a spring outing to Fire Island. He meets Lawrence, a thoughtful and caring guy in some silly situations as well as for quiet conversation in the early morning on the beach. Lawrence convinces Connor to let go some but also seems to appreciate Connor's thoughfulness. It looked like the two of them were not going to get together as Connor's former partner convinced Lawrence Connor was not interested. Result, Connor has to find Lawrence. This latter part of the story is not as well-developed and provides the basis for a future novel.

A funny and nice story.

While there is a certain level of heartbreak at first, when Connor discovers his boyfriend cheating on him, blaming him and leaving him, and the next painful weeks after the breakup, once his best friend Byron convinces him to go to the Fire Island, everything begins to change.

Connor starts a journey of self-discovery, helped by Lawrence, a handsome stranger he met on the beach, who gives him a series of challenges, and little by little, Connor begins to loosen up and enjoy life. I quite liked the ending.

This is a great candidate for a summer beach read! It isn't a dark, heavy read. There are no big issues to be contented with, no big twists to give you whiplash. Connor is dumped for being too stuck up and predictable. His best friend drags him out to Fire Island to shake Connor out of his blues. While he is there he meets Lawerence, a mysterious Howard grad, and strikes up a friendship. Together they create the Fire Island Ice Queen Challenge. I loved watching Connor complete the challenges and bloom. I was rooting for them both the entire time.

The Fire Island Ice Queen by BJ Irons was a terrific way to begin my summer by the lake.

I have to admit when the book started, I wasn't a big Connor fan, but his growth and willingness throughout the book to step out of his comfort zone to do the challenges that Lawrence gave him made me quickly fall in love with him.

While not a steamy book, it was sweet and I loved the connection between Connor and Lawrence. Connor's friends were the best and I'd love to read a book about Byron. The ending and epilogue made my heart happy.

5 Stars - I highly recommend this summer read!

Talk about the best vacation ever. Connor, after being hurt, takes a chance and takes his friends advice of a vacation. Lawrence, seeing a mistake about to happen, steps in and removes the bottle from Connor prevention nasty hangover. Their friendship becomes solid in just a short time and their story is very sweet. Nasty exes, hurtful words, a Fire Island escape and a budding romance all make this book a fun and interesting reading. The ending is really worth reading.

This book is totally cheesy gay fun in the sun. It got a bit much occasionally but in general it was a nice change from my usual heavy duty read.

Nothing bad to say about this book; sand, sea, speedos, s3x, friends, fun what else is there that you want in a book? I totally recommend this book for your summer reading list xx

We have the two MCs, Conner and Lawrence. This is told through only Conner's POV, except for a couple paragraphs narrated by his best friend, which I wouldn't mind getting his story in the future. I really liked this book. It was pretty cool seeing how much Conner changed for the better. I'm glad karma came around and bit his ex boyfriend Derrick. I just wished we got to know Lawrence better, he seemed like a great guy. For a short story, this was a good book.

A fun and cute summer read!

Connor is fresh out of a long term relationship, he thought his future was certain…law school and marriage. After catching his boyfriend cheating everything has changed.
To cheer him up his best friend takes him on vacation to Fire Island. Being made to he’s uptight, prudish and judgmental, he meets Lawrence who gives him a list of challenges to break him out of his shell and not be the person his ex said he was.

Characters are well developed as well as the world they reside in. You will laugh out loud at these guys vacation antics. A standalone, quick and feel good read perfect for the beach or poolside!

An enjoyable fluff read, that's quite chuckle worthy in places. I found Connor occasionally a little bit annoying for reasons you'll discover if you decide to read it. Once Connor decided to get over himself, the story picked up and there were some really laugh out loud moments, especially between Connor and Lawrence. It does meander somewhat in the second half of the book, but still worth a read.

A very fun summer read! I loved Connor’s journey and the Ice Queen challenges were unique and creative- an engaging idea. I also enjoyed Connor and his group of friends who are helping him get past his break up. Lawrence and Connor are easy to root for and the terrible ex boyfriend added just the right touch of drama. Excellent and sweet ending as well!

Breakup Cure

When Derrick cheated on Connor and broke up with him, Connor was devastated. His friends dragged him to Fire Island for a holiday vacation to recover. He met Lawrence, who helped him break out of his shell and have some outrageous fun. As they spent time together, a deeper relationship started to grow between them. A good, entertaining story about becoming your own person.

The Fire Island Ice Queen is an m/m romance.
It’s not a hot and heavy read, but it is something you could easily chill reading on the beach, by the pool, and have a few laughs along the way.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this as it’s not my normal type of read but I did like it and found it easy going.
Would definitely recommend.

A totally adorable, fun read. Well, it's not so funny at the beginning, that's kind of sad and painful, but to cheer him up Connor's friends whisk him away to Fire Island, and that's where the fun begins. I loved this, was glued to it and finished it in record time, a new author for me, a wonderful read.
