Cribsheet & Expecting Better 2 Books Collection Set By Emily
With Expecting Better, award-winning economist Emily Oster spotted a need in the pregnancy market for advice that gave women the information they needed to make the best decision for their own pregnancies. By digging into the data, Oster found that much of the conventional pregnancy wisdom was wrong. In Cribsheet, she now tackles an even greater decision-making in the early years of parenting.
Expecting Pregnancy—unquestionably one of the most profound, meaningful experiences of adulthood—can reduce otherwise intelligent women to, well, babies. Pregnant women are told to avoid cold cuts, sushi, alcohol, and coffee without ever being told why these are forbidden. Rules for prenatal testing are similarly unexplained. Moms-to-be desperately want a resource that empowers them to make their own right choices.
Emily Oster is an American economist and bestselling author. After receiving a B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard in 2002 and 2006 respectively, Oster taught at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. She later moved to Brown University, where she holds the rank of Professor of Economics. Her research interests span from development economics and health economics to research design and experimental methodology.
She is the author of two books, Expecting Better and Cribsheet, which discuss a data-driven approach to decision-making in pregnancy and parenting.
I really enjoyed reading this book—it was very informative. I found it very easy to read and follow along with. I appreciated Emily sharing her personal stories about being pregnant and giving birth. It opened my eyes to the many different options I have to chose from, and I also learned that it’s not a “one size fits all approach.” The book also debunked a lot of “normal” doctor recommendations and it was backed by data. Overall, I definitely recommend this book for people who are expecting!
I really enjoyed both of these reads. The focus on information from good data sets and the author not telling you what to do but just what the data says was very helpful for me! It was important to have the information so we can make the best choice for our family.
Highly recommend this book to all expecting mothers, regardless of if it’s your first or not. Gives statistics on what is necessary and what is not during pregnancy and birth. Written by an economist who experienced pregnancy herself and did the research for her own benefit.
I listened to this as an audiobook. I was recommended to read this prior to getting pregnant. I’m so glad I did. It is full of wonderful information and I know that when the day does come I have the information I need ready.
Data driven books navigating through pregnancy and early childhood on methods that are proven to work. Risks vs. benefits to weigh for each individual family.
