I have the pleasure of purchasing this book at London’s tower 2 weeks ago. I was so enchanted by the history that surrounded this building that I couldn’t help wanting to learn more about England past.
All my life, I’ve tried to absorb from different sources pieces of the history of this country (movies, tv shows, books), since in a way always caught my attention and how could not? It is basically the epitome of what we called the first world. Our modern society owned so much to this country and I feel most of people don’t get that.
I left London with the great feeling of wanting to come back and a sense of nostalgic of been there, been able of charging the weight of its past above my shoulders. Desiring continue walking around his medieval corners and navigate across the river Thames one more time again.
While I was over in the UK last month my lovely friend bought this for me while we were at a museum. She is so sweet!
This is a run down of some big events, people, and etc that influenced the English culture and history.
I'm a huge history nerd so it was fun going through this and seeing English history through an English historians POV. I loved that it was "simplified" so it wasn't overly wordy. We also got some pictures too so that was an added bonus.
But yes, a quick read but I took my time. I enjoyed re-reading certain sections. I think I'm ready for my English History exam! ;)
Informative and interesting. Plus pictures are fuuuuun!
This was an amazing little book! I have never considered myself very interested in history but this book covered all the important events of English history in a short, concise and very entertaining way.
I would love a collection of books like this one about everything!
I never thought I'd give a history book 5 stars but here we are! I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn the basics of English history, or maybe freshen up your knowledge from school.
Also love the small format. Easy to bring along and quick to read.
Just because the topics of this book are only one page long doesn’t mean this book isn’t noteworthy. I really enjoy history and was looking for a way to learn British history without have to read hundreds of thousands of pages.
This book takes you through 12,000 years of history. From the inhabitants of Maiden Castle to Brexit, this book overs a short synopsis of the most important events in British history.
This is a great starting book to get really short and high-level details of historical parts of English history. I've added tabs to the pages in which I wanted to learn more about to explore and research. My one complaint are with some of the gaps between events. Although it may have been just back and forth wars, I like to know the changing of the monarchs as that plays into the political and economical climate during those times.
Quick and informative, perfect for long bus rides while traveling through the U.K. and Ireland. There were a few pages that left me wishing for a bit more detail, though I recognize that this whole book is built on being brief. This was a generally good overview of Britain’s history and helped me hone in on periods, events, and people that I’d like to learn more about.
A great and helpful overview of the culture, politics, events, and figures that shaped and define English history. I especially enjoyed the book’s treatment on Elizabeth I and the conflicts between Protestants and Roman Catholics in England, as well the as the sections on England during World War 2. I bought this book while in the gift shop at Westminster Abbey, so that was fun!
4.5 stars Super quick and easy read, with lots of important and clear information!! I have tabbed loads of pages to research further, which is what I wanted. I just wish each monarch change we detailed.
It's about the history of England, in a nutshell version. but he's covering all the important incidents and the people in the country without elaborating his own narrative, just giving the truth as it is. Good read
It's a useful condensed version of English history, with lots of interesting events and topics. I'd call it a reference book in a story style — each small story or page serves as a rabbit hole of information go down if you're interested.
