An action-packed thriller and source of the hit Netflix drama where the only way to survive is to play the game!
Eighteen-year-old Ryohei Arisu is sick of his life. School sucks, his love life is a joke, and his future weighs on him like impending doom. As he struggles to exist in a world that can’t be bothered with him, Ryohei feels like everything would be better if he were anywhere else. When a strange fireworks show transports him and his friends to a parallel world, Ryohei thinks all his wishes have come true. But this new world isn’t an empty paradise, it’s a vicious game. And the only way to survive is to play.
3.5 stars This volume started off so strong, but it might be my least favorite of the three I read so far. I love what’s happening right now plot wise, but some of the pacing in this one just felt a little slow. I also thought it was a little random where halfway through, the story with the main characters pauses for a while and we get introduced to other characters, it all eventually connects but for a while there I was just hoping we’d get back to the main characters. I still love the games in this series and it’s so intense! Can’t wait to read the next one!
The newest game is an escape room murder mystery that turns the residents of The Beach -- a resort hotel that is supposed to be a cooperative refuge in the midst of the Borderland -- against each other.
The main hero spends much of the volume sidelined, giving the writer a chance to develop the new cast of supporting characters since he killed off all the previous ones. Of course, these new ones are just more fodder for the death games body count . . .
I was hoping the saga of The Beach would wrap up in this volume, but the middle third of the book is a flashback side story introducing a new character named Hayato Dodo. Fortunately the death game he stumbles into in Borderland is visually interesting and quite tense.
I have the next couple volumes on hand from the library, so onward!

Since I've already watched the Netflix series, it is such a treat to discover a side story. Dodo, a new character that I believed wasn't introduced in the live action, is really interesting. To me, the Four of Hearts game is the highlight of this volume. I just love his character and I'm hoping to see more of him in the next volumes. Also, never have I thought that the hooded guy he was playing with is Arisu all along. I literally thought it was Chishiya.
Greatest volume. I think this is right the time where the live-action Netflix series left off. Lots of backstory, thought-provoking side-story and overall tension you won't be able to stop reading.

There is no lasting hope in violence only temporary relief from hopelessnes.
"...if it still bothers you ,then bear that guilt and keep living ! And no matter how much you suffer ,struggle and flounder to the very end .you must survive."
"All of us are easy to hurt and thus all the hungrier for love "
I cannot explain how much of a good time I am having finally reading these! I just can't put them down! The absolute carnage the Ten of Hearts game brings, bloody hell... I have loved every volume so far, I can see this being a clean sweep of 5 stars all round. As always, time to jump onto the next!
It's pretty close to the netflix adaptation, so there's no surprises there. But the side story of the 4 of hearts was a good surprise.
Once again, we learned more about the characters learning the background of a few others.
As I said the side story gave us another view of the hearts games and the way they're made, I found weird that Arisu was a specialist in hearts when he'd only survived one game, guess that's sorted out there.
As usual, the ending was chef's kiss and can't wait for the next one.
Very good again, this series does surprise me by how good it is in every volume. I was worried by the massive backstory that we get in this one, but it did make sense and add to the story so it was worth it. Totally fun and I'm still going with it!
Wow, the more I read this series the more I fall in love. With each page it just gets better and better. I particularly adore how no character is simple. They all have complex back stories that aren't as simple as black and white. They all have struggles and issues, and the way that contributes to how they play the games and how they act in said games blows my mind. Honestly cannot wait to get my hands on volume 4!!!
Another brutal volume. The side story with 4 of hearts was something, while the 10 of hearts is just chaos. The action is non stop and the stakes high. I can't predict where this will go, but nowhere good.
