Captain William Bligh's account of the fatal voyage of the Bounty, and his subsequent 3,600-mile trip to Timor in an open boat. Bligh was not the tyrant of legend--in fact, he may have been one of the most lenient commanders of a Pacific exploration ship of that period.
An abridged copy of this book geared towards younger readers.
As a result half the pages are illustrations while the rest of the book has been trimmed down so only the most important episodes are included while removing probably much more of the lengthy explanations that books of this time are known for.
The Mutiny on Board H.M.S. Bounty is not only a look at an adventure taking place on the high seas but a tale of actual survival as well as a snapshot of the world as it was during the events of this book thus sharing such facts as how early explorers reacted with various locals, the cultural sharing and even mentioning of kidnapping people for use on the boats rather early on.
As a result the book is probably frowned upon most highly since it is everything this world is now against unless you enjoy survival stories and adventure on the high seas.
I did not realize that this was nonfiction. I thought it was a classic fiction tale, but it is based on the journals of Captain William Bligh. It was very boring, and the main conflict didn't even come until halfway through.
Not that anyone cares, but I will cast my vote that Captain Bligh was harsher than he needed, though mutiny was not right, either.
My local library didn't have a copy of Bligh's original memoir, but this abridged-for-younger-readers version is faithful to the spirit of the original text. The rigors of life aboard 18th-century sailing ships, the motivations that First Mate Fletcher Christian may have had for leading a famous mutiny against his captain, and the perils of navigating uncharted waters in a small craft all come through loud and clear. Had Bligh thought his memoir needed a subtitle, it could well have been "how breadfruit changed my life."
The black-and-white drawings in this edition look stilted, but that's a plus, becasue they're stilted in the best Fifties fashion. Aboriginal (Tahitian) women are shown wearing modest leis, while Tahitian men look like bare-chested versions of Clint Eastwood as the outlaw Josey Wales.
I didnt read this version. Mine was definitely a bit more challenging, but i loved the story! It was amazing seeing how so many men survived on just a small dingy for that long! Depending on what you are interested in, to me this was actually a very interested a suspenseful book as you are taken along a very long journey as several men cease to survive on just a small row boat with limited food and shelter!
If this were a work of fiction, I would only have given it 2 stars, but the fact that this was a true story, and that this was from his personal journal, made the book much more fascinating. i read it with Nathanael, and we both wanted to know what had happened to Christian Fletcher and the rest of the mutineers. We'll have to look that up.

Mutiny on the Bounty 1935- Charles Laughton / Clark Gable
An incredible tale of a captain's survival of a mutiny.
While this story wasn't written with beautifully crafted sentences (it is an adapted version after all), it had a lot of great information for research. It was cool to learn about many of the responsibilities of a captain at sea, specifically how the captain had to constantly think about his men. Just one man could bring down an entire ship. This record of his journey and survival is truly enlightening for those who wish to learn more about life at sea.
I love these illustrated classics. I read this one to my daughters as their bedtime story, and they got so into it that it only took us a few sittings to be done. I was into it too. The fact that it is non-fiction adds to the allure, as it is nearly beyond belief what these folks went through. Ah, the high seas! (*Note: my edition, which I'm pretty sure is the same content, was actually a little different on the cover. My copy's ISBN is B000H1JMQA.)
Captain William recorded the most famous mutiny in the sea history when a of his men, led by Fletcher Christian, forced him from his ship onto a small launch and cast him adrift into sea. Captain William and other men with him have survive with less food and water. Who they work through with difficult situation and find their way home.
This is a supposed “children’s version” of the famous story, but the facts speak for themselves. Captain Bligh is the author here, and even though he gives it his own spin, you can still see he was a monster.
Fun and easy read. It's fun to read a hardcover book with big type and pictures on every second page :). The story-telling is terse and I wish I had more details! What an experience though. I found it surprising that the deaths of 5 of the men was so casually mentioned at the very end.

This book was my introduction to the story of the HMS Bounty. I know own all three film adaptations and (at the time of this writing) I'm winning two eBay auctions for the unabridged book and for the Bounty trilogy so...you could say this made a fan out of me. You could certainly say that.
Upon the high seas, there is no more traitorous deed than the act of mutiny. But like any divisive act there are two sides to every story. The notorious recounting of Captain William Bligh in his writings The Mutiny on Board H.M.S. Bounty" paint a portrait of a stern but fair captain pitted against an increasingly lazy and rebellious crew. Led by First Mate Fletcher Christian, the story of what happened on Bligh's ship is debated til this day, but fascination with the most famous mutiny in history and its origin keep this classic on shelves.
Part of the Illustrated Classic Edition series, Mutiny lives up to the quality of the line, capturing the essence of the quick moving tale with engaging illustrations by Brendan Lynch. Rather than turn to the Cliff Notes editions, elementary students should turn to this version to not only understand but appreciate the tensions that constantly swell aboard ships on the high seas.
The Mutiny on Board HMS Bounty is about a ship-full of men that goes on an adventure. They go to many different islands and deal with many different kinds of people. But, in the middle of the trip, half of the crew turns against the captian. So, the captian and the loyal crew mates get thrown onto a small row boat and have to live in it till they are able to find land. Eventually they all find land and have only lost the life of one person. They get help from the natives and find their way back home. I would recomend this book to people who enjoy classics or adventures.
