Retired Sergeant Major John Benton recounts two more tales of his experiences serving under Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce.
In The Lady Jessica Affair, by George Ivanoff, Benton and the Brigadier take tea with an apparently harmless elderly lady at her stately home – and end up defending the world.
In Kenton Hall’s Life Assurance, life has apparently thrown a different set of circumstances John Benton’s way. But will he be able to find a path back to his true calling?
I greatly enjoyed this slim volume of two short tales revolving around the character of Sergeant Benton from Doctor Who, both of which strongly evoked the feeling of classic UNIT adventures while bringing a freshness to the wealth of existing lore. In Ivanoff's 'The Lady Jessica Affair', the oft-used Classic 'Who tropes of alien incursion and possession are given a fresh spin as Benton is put in the unenviable position of having to plead the case for the continued existence of humankind. Hall’s 'Life Assurance' initially appears to be a recounting of how Benton was first drafted into UNIT...but it very quickly becomes clear that something far more sinister is going on. While the prose is clearly aimed at a younger readership there's nothing here that adult readers won't equally enjoy, and I strongly recommend this book to anyone with a love of Classic 70s Doctor Who.
