The Lost Spy and the Green Dress

Rate this book
For twelve year-old Motti, growing up in Israel in the 1960s, the world is full of mysteries to be solved, while his town is full of spies to be caught. His parents are Holocaust survivors, struggling to build a new life for themselves but, to Israeli-born Motti, they are nothing but an embarrassment. Unlike them, he will not be a victim; he will be bold and strong and fearless.

So, when Motti and his best friend Reuven identify a suspicious, elderly man in the neighborhood as a potential German spy, they set out to unmask him, determined to root out the enemy and defeat him. Thus ensues a series of adventures, investigations, near misses and the repeated appearance of a green dress.

Aided by Reuven’s sister Aviva, they finally solve the case and, in the process, Motti uncovers some secrets closer to home, secrets like: what does his mother hide away in her private drawer? Why did she have to go on a trip to Germany? And what exactly is she refusing to say about her past?

An homage to classic children’s mystery books such as Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven , this is a tightly-plotted, funny, and complex story which explores heavy themes – the Holocaust, trauma, mental health and poverty – with nuance, a lightness of touch and a cast of compelling young characters.

This is a detective story that takes place in Israel in the sixties when two boys start following a Nazi spy in the neighborhood. I will not reveal the surprising ending and the family secrets that are revealed. I read the book in one sitting. Highly recommend for ages eight and up.

I'm a tremendous lover of fiction, both for adults and children, and always looking for new and intriguing reads. Having stumbled across 'the Lost Spy and the Green Dress', I sat down in my comfy armchair, preparing to read a few pages before an appointment I had - and I ended up missing the appointment! It's difficult to put this book into one category because it weaves together many strands of thought but essentially it's a great read for 'young adults' and 'real adults' alike, not to mention anyone who is curious about the history of the Jews and the early years after the establishment of the State of Israel.

Without wishing to give too much away, the hero of the book, Motti, and his friend Reuben are two young boys living in a suburb of Tel Aviv in the 1960's, when the State of Israel was in its infancy. Lovers of detective fiction, they begin following an old man in the neighborhood, and soon become convinced that he's a spy. But the book is much more than a simple detective story - it also opens a window on the aftermath of the holocaust (and those who arrived in Israel after surviving the horrors of the camps). Not that this should terrify any reader, because it's written so thoughtfully, so carefully, that as you turn the pages, all the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place.

I taught young children for years and can highly recommend this book to any parent looking for a way to teach their son or daughter about history, whilst identifying with the thoughts and actions of two young men, determined to be 'heroes' as they come of age in a country struggling to build a future for its youth but also unsure of how to deal with the collective trauma many of its older citizens had to endure, after surviving World War II.

A must-read!

The Lost Spy and the Green Dress conveys in a smart and sensitive way young Israeli memories in the middle of the last century. The book deals with a difficult and problematic issue for adults to deal with, the dealings of a family for generations with the wounds, memories and scratches left by the Holocaust in the first generation, and its effect on their children and their way of perceiving and observing life. The author, in the guise of a seemingly ordinary children's story about detectives and spies, succeeds in conveying the feelings and memories of the members of the second generation, about childhoods in the shadow of parents who are unable to forget and completely detach themselves from the events that took place during this dark and inhumane period. The universality of the characters allows any child (or parent) to almost find himself in them, recalling the childhood games that prevailed in the neighborhood, the various colorful types that inhabited it and the situations that everyone remembers from childhood, and everything is accompanied by subtle and honed humor and a sharp and amused observation of impossible and difficult situations For explanation and understanding from a child's point of view. The book is written in a clear and fluid manner that is easy for the children to understand, but the adult (the parent) will recognize between the lines the points of fracture and pain, which now, from the distance of years and experience, can finally be observed and treated with somewhat bitter humor and gain self-insights from the reflection that the author presents to him. highly recommend!!!

A wonderful book for children, which intelligently and sensitively conveys childhood memories in an Israeli neighborhood of the middle of the last century.

The book deals with delicate personal and national issues of the young Israel after the holocaust, memories and scratches of the first generation.

Twelve-year-old Mutti and Reuven discover that a mysterious stranger is in their peaceful neighborhood, they are convinced that he is a cunning and cruel spy. They harness detective skills from their favorite adventure books, and decide to catch the dangerous enemy. The mission gets more complicated: family secrets from the past are slowly revealed.
