Funny, although most of the jokes revolved around drinking. Judging by the other reviews the other books in the series are funnier, so I'll be on the lookout for those.
A bit of an awkward one, rather eliding the distinction between the old stereotype (beer and daytime TV) and the new (safe spaces and crippling debt). Not among the series' best.
This caused something of a disturbance in the bookshop due to the continued laughter and compulsion to read bits aloud. When I got a moment to read it through myself, I too found it the funniest so far with its close and cynical observation of contemporary student life. We particularly liked the 'no-platforming safe space' student union building which hasn't had a wiring check since 1988, accompanied by an illustration of a burning building.
"This is a student. By the time he graduates, he will be a grown-up: exhausted, hideously in debt and unable to imagine going to bed sober." - this hits too hard. I've just realised how bleak my life is
OK in a clever student-y way but nothing that hasn't been referenced a thousand times before, mainly by the Young Ones. About three pages made me genuinely laugh out loud.
These Adult Ladybird Books are very cleverly written and a lot of fun .. this one wasn't as funny as others from the Series I have read, but still made me chuckle ..
This delightful book is the latest in the series of Ladybird books which have been specially planned to help grown-ups with the world about them.
The large clear script, the careful choice of words, the frequent repetition and the thoughtful matching of text with pictures all enable grown-ups to think they have taught themselves to cope. Featuring original Ladybird artwork alongside brilliantly funny, brand new text. Quite a truthful but funny look at University.
Another in the Ladybird adult series, this takes genuine Ladybird illustrations from times past (and there are some beautiful pieces of work included) and uses them out of context, to aid the comedy. In taking on students, Hazeley and Morris seem to go for every easy gag (drinking a lot, not working) and although some bits are funny, it’s not up to the usual standard.
My daughter who is currently a student doesn't understand what's so funny about this. My wife who is a University lecturer however thinks it's hilarious. She's right. It may take a few more years for my daughter to get it though.
What a splendid idea to use the marvellously painted pictures again, this time for sometimes witty, sometimes silly, but always entertaining little books for adults. Thank you very much for this!
