The ladder metaphor is a bit strained and somewhat confusing as the metaphor shifts from Capacity to Character. The metaphor does work for the growth mindset that the authors want to inculcate in their readers. Overall the content of the book is excellent. There is a tremendous amount of wisdom in this book regarding different phases of leadership development and personal growth.

There was so much good in this book that I will likely be referring to it again over the years. The authors described well the common pitfalls of leaders and how there is truly another way to climb the ladder where the focus is not on power and personal gain, but sacrifice and love. Already I have found my decisions challenged by this book and have used what I have learned to move in a more loving, sacrificial way. Great book!

Solid and fundamental instruction for not just a leader, but a gracious one—with character. Read it years ago. Probably not as important for a second time through, but good reminders throughout. If I had a handful leaders under me, I'd hand this one out.
