A wronged man. A hidden treasure. A secret that could change the world.
England, 1741. When young farmhand, Caleb, is caught in a romantic tryst with the daughter of Jacob Stevenson, he is publicly flogged and sent away on The Retribution, flagship of the Stevenson fleet. His simple life turned upside down, Caleb must come to terms with the thrills and dangers of life at sea as he finds himself voyaging to the New World.
Awaiting him in Rio de Janeiro is an adventure beyond his wildest imaginings, a land of opportunity but also great hardship. A dangerous place where slavers and pirates stalk the seas. And the most dangerous pirate of all — Jackson Bell, leader of the notorious and feared Scarlets — wants the secret that The Retribution is carrying. A secret so great it could grant the bearer, power over the known world. Will Jackson Bell get what he wants and plunge the world into chaos or can Caleb stop him and survive in this new world?
Wilbur Smith and Clive Cussler meet Bernard Cornwell in this story about the price of freedom, the cost of revenge and the siren song of power and privilege.

The Retribution, set in the mid-1700’s, is packed with surprises and twisty action. The characters are engaging and interesting. The world is well developed. I enjoyed this epic adventure very much and highly recommend it.
As I finished reading this wonderful action packed novel, my first thought was I hope the next in the series comes out soon. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in 1 day. Really great first novel!
Utterly brilliant book; stuffed so full of action and adventure, I was afraid my Kindle would explode!
Set in the days when a bloke could wear a voluminous, cotton white shirt and still captain a large sailing vessel, this clever, pacey thriller whipped along at fantastic speed of knots. Clearly for fans of Cornwell's Sharpe, or Clavell's Shogun, this has all the hallmarks of a great adventure but still managed to serve up something that felt both satisfying and fresh
I really enjoyed this book, there were a few times initially when I thought the writer, was losing his way but then he engaged second gear and away we went. Big love story told with exciting and gripping fight scenes mixed in. The whole story based around Brazil back in the 1740’s with excellent description of that country back in those far off days. Highly recommended.
