Sobib muhekrimi austajatele. :)

Readers of my notes will know that I am not a great fan of the short story but, may be, I have discovered a new place for them.
Having just finished the second of a series that I would have expected to keep me going for several months, only to discover that I didnt want any more of them, I needed to consider carefully just what kind of book I wanted to read next. Unable to decide then among the numerous titles on my shelves what better than a short story to fill the gap while I thought over the longer term.

It didnt take long to recall the back story here. Obviously for a series of short stories, background doesnt sink too deep. Similarly, the story itself is pretty straight forward and the answers are there almost before you have had a chance to form any ideas. In full length books that wouldnt be acceptable but in this case its all part of the story.

A nice cosy short story, but in fairness to the full length novels, I can only score a three. If there was a separate category then it would be higher . I already have the next waiting for another 'right' moment.

I love a good short story and the Cherringham series does not disappoint.

When two locals decided to roam through the farms of Cherringham, it is no surprise that one day they might find something more than a belt buckle or an odd coin. The metal detector has turned up a true treasure -- a silver Roman plate purported to be worth millions.

Of course, the simple locals cannot be trusted to keep it safe so Professor Cartwright volunteers his safe. Unfortunately, the next morning when a museum expert arrives to appraise the find, it is gone. With fingers pointing and no one having answers, retired NYPD detective Jack and local web designer Sarah jump right in and discover who had the most to gain by this disappearance.

There is just something about the series that is the perfect combination of mystery and character. The stories are short and to the point, combining the indefinable mixture that keeps you engaged to the end.

Mal kein Mord, sondern Kunstraub

**Inhaltsangabe Verlag:**

These little mysteries just keep getting better! Two men with metal detectors discover a centuries old Roman plate on a Cherringham farm and it means a lot to them, and to the tenant farmer and his wife as well as to the owner of the farmland, Lady Repton. This could mean the end to all of their money problems so they immediately call in the local expert to evaluate the item and find that it's worth more than they dreamed... if verified by the British Museum, it could be worth over 1.5 million pounds. Since they need to keep it safe overnight, the local expert, a former professor at Oxford, offers to keep it in his safe until the representative from the Museum can get there the next day.

The next day comes and all the interested parties are there to find out about the plate, including Sarah in her role as local e-news bulletin writer, but when it's time to open the safe, they discover that the plate and some other valuables have been stolen. As time goes on, the police have no clues so Jack and Sarah decide to look into the issue. Could any of the interested parties have stolen the plate to sell on the black market? What about the retired professor? And his erstwhile retired colleague from Oxford who is so willing to state that the plate is a phony? Or could it be anyone who was in the pub the night of the theft who heard all about the find from the two drunken metal detectorists? Sarah and Jack have to stoop to some shady shenanigans to solve this one.

Another enjoyable mystery (Cherrington #4) with sleuths Sarah and Jack that moves right along. As noted in previous reviews of earlier books in this series, these aren’t twisty thrillers and it’s probably not terribly hard to guess whodunnit (though I mostly refrain from speculating). I appreciate that they aren’t at all padded with unnecessary detail and red herrings, but are rather quick and enjoyable reads. I especially appreciate the humor and irony in the dialogue and characters’ thoughts, and the literary references, both overt and subtle. This one features the discovery and subsequence disappearance (theft) of an ancient silver Roman plate found by two local prospectors with metal detectors. Lots of people stand to benefit financially if the plate is certified as authentic and valuable, but who is the thief?

Siinäkin on tarpeeksi tarpeita tällaisen kevytdekkarin juoneen.

Pari metallinetsijäkaverusta löytää savipellosta antiikkisen hopeavadin, jonka arvoksi paikallinen professori arvioi miljoonia puntia. Vati kuuluu toki kruunulle, mutta löytäjille on silti luvassa sievoinen summa. Paitsi että. Vati mokoma varastetaan mainitun paikallisen proffan kassakaapista.

I really enjoy these short stories that are perfect for waiting rooms or puttering with chores. This episode is focused on the discovery of a treasure of a Roman hoard and the needy and greedy involved. The ongoing sleuthing involves a retired and widowed older NYPD homicide cop who is finding life in the English countryside a fair antidote to his mourning and a local recently divorced woman who has returned to her hometown and near her parents (with her children) who make a good sleuthing pair.
Voice actor Neil Dudgeon has been an asset to my listening pleasure.

When two Cherringham locals using metal detectors discover an ancient Roman plate on a muddy farm, a well-known professor offers to store it in his safe until a representative from the British Museum can come to verify its authenticity. But when the representative arrives, the plate is missing. The local police blame a band of art thieves, but Jack and Sarah have other suspicions. As with the others in the series so far, the ending was unexpected and the way the villain is exposed is quite clever. There is no murder in this story, but the pair tackle this case in the same way.

My least favorite book in the series so far. The stories are already short so the long set-up before the crime actually happened and before the regular characters appeared felt even longer. But it's nice that Jack is starting to feel more comfortable in Cherringham now, like a part of the community.

This series is so charming without becoming saccharine. I especially enjoyed this installment with the addition of a treasure hunt. The villain is never shocking but that also makes them more plausible. Highly recommend.

Another fun instalment in the series with burglary replacing murder as the mysterious crime to be solved. I also note a new twist in this episode with the interaction with the local police. Good story, interesting outcome. Three stars.

I enjoyed the book, but I am removing one star, because I was able to to figure it out very quickly in this one and so I did not have to try very hard to find out who stole it. Still, it was rather enjoyable short story and there were still few surprises along the way, just not so many in some of the other books.
Basically, a valuable Roman find was made by two amateurs, but it was stollen during the night from wall safe. And Sarah decides that she and Jack should find out, who took it. Lot of people need the money from the find to save their families from difficult financial situation. So lot of people have a motive to take it. And you are to figure out who did it.
I would still recommend the book although it was easy to figure it out, it was an enjoyable and relaxing read. And I am still amazed how much the authors can fit into one short book.
