Rob Howell is the best-selling creator of the Shijuren fantasy setting and an author in the Four Horsemen Universe. He writes primarily high fantasy, space opera, military science fiction, and alternate history, usually with mystery mixed into it all.

Letha of the Thousand Sorrows” by Glen Cook.

Rating breakdown:
My Croakie, Darling and most of the Black Company Old Timers on the run from the Lady (as opposed to Lady 😬) ➡ +8 stars
Batshit-crazy Taken flying their carpets like the homicidal maniacs that they are ➡ +4 stars
✘ Not a single game of tonk played at any point in the story ➡ -2 stars
✘ The sex-hungry homunculi nonsense -7 stars
Final rating: 3 stars and stuff.

To say that Glen Cook's recent obsession with interest in sex is slightly discombobulating might be the understatement of the last two centuries. I mean, the man rarely ever mentions the topic in his books and the closest he ever came to writing a sex scene was probably in The Silver Spike:
Somehow we ended up doing what men and women seem unable to avoid.”
In other words, Cook might be the Father of Grimdark but he sure isn't the Father of Smut (which might be the understatement of the last four centuries). So to have the man basically use sex as a plot device is awkward as fish. Not to mention weird. Really weird. And completely out of character. Also, if I wanted to read about most of my favorite Black Company characters acting like a bunch of horny teenagers, I'd read Black Company smut fanfic. If there is such a thing. I sure hope there isn't.

Anyhoo and stuff, I'm still glad I read this short. Because there is just nothing like this series. And this world. And my Croakie. And One-Eye. And Goblin. And Silent. And Darling. And Elmo. And Otto. And Hagop. And the Lieutenant. And, and, and...

Pretty much, yes.

P.S. The events in this short story take place after those in Shadows Linger. FYI and stuff.
