The Blanchard witches will need all of their skill, all of their love, and their indomitable family unity to face the challenges awaiting them. Welcome to Daihmler County, Alabama. Home of the Blanchards. Things are about to get a little strange.
As an author, the thing I desire most from my work is for it to have a meaningful impact on its audience. First and foremost, my job is to entertain you through character driven stories that also have action-packed excitement, page turning suspense, and jaw dropping twists. But secondly, I want to stir you. No matter what genre my novels fall into, I promise you will emotionally connect to the people on the page. I write from my experiences, therefore when one of my characters takes an emotional journey it is a journey I also have taken. Their tears are my tears. So, when a fan tells me I helped them through a devastating personal loss because one of my characters went through that very loss, THAT is what I write for. As far as my personal writing style goes, I write the way I think. I prefer authors who get to the point. I do not need 3 pages describing the tapestry on the wall when I am reading a book. While I pay careful attention to constructing well fleshed out characters and descriptive settings, I strive to maintain a fast-paced novel, unless otherwise dictated by the overarching storyline. Therefore, my writing style, (I’ve been told, and hope is true for everyone) connects you emotionally to the characters quickly and keeps a steady pace of action, humor, and emotion so that readers do not lose interest before the story is fully told.
Hogwarts meets A Series of Unfortunate Events, this grown-up, Tuscaloosa-based family saga kicks off with Sunday dinners, witches, and a potential serial killer..oh my! Suitable for Young Adult readers, this fantasy novel is as exciting as it is humorous, and it has only just begun. Number 2 of the series will be rereleased this Fall, no. 3 shortly thereafter, and at least two more to follow - lots of adventures to look forward to!
This book had me hanging on to every page. The Blanchard family is the family you would love to be apart of. The book is well written with twist and turns and surprises around every corner. This is the first in a series and I cannot wait to read the others.
Great book. Characters are relatable and easy to engage with. The story has a wonderful mix of action and surprise. I particularly enjoyed how Micah was able to tie in many local landmarks.
So glad my book club and I were recommended this book and had the opportunity to get to know and support an Alabama author. This book was full of humor and heart, I'd recommend it to anyone who has a fondness for movies or shows like Practical Magic, or Charmed. You'll enjoy getting to meet this downhome southern family of witches.
I liked the concept of the extended family living together and I like stories about witches and werewolves and so on, but this book was too exaggerated for me. Everything was too dramatic, too tragic, too fast, too unlikely (I am not talking about the magic but the interactions). The casual outing of a random stranger was just the cherry on top.
I just want to thank the author for sharing these characters with the world. I have fallen in love with the Blanchard family and I can't wait to find out what happens next!
If you enjoy witches and werewolves, Micah House has created a world of fun for you. These are not the witches of Macbeth, although at one point they do stir up a pot of magic brew. Rather, they are cosmopolitan witches—a loving, tight-knit family struggling with everyday problems and occasional life crises. Some of them also face the struggle of when to use supernatural powers and when using them is inappropriate. The Blanchard family is helpful to their community in Daihmler County. One is a doctor and has the power of healing via touch. Another, a veterinarian who talks to her animal patients and is therefore better able to help them. One of the witches can use her powers to see the events at crime scenes and is on-call for difficult cases. This family includes some non-witches, as well. The love that binds them is strong and wholesome, and they join together frequently to help solve one another’s problems. Even a witch who has been punished by the witches’ council and must spend her life as a shadow gliding around the Blanchard-home’s walls, is still considered a family member. But, when it seems a werewolf or two have appeared in town, the Blanchards must use all their knowledge, instincts, courage, supernatural powers and skills to right the world and save the community from at least one savage serial killer. There are a large number of characters in this novel, but don’t let this intimidate you. The author does well reminding the reader of relationships between his characters, even as the book progresses. This is a fun, playful book. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.
Superb story. Great combo of storyline and action. This book is an amazing work by a first time author. I can hardly wait to get my hands on the second book of the series. I am missing the Blanchards already.
Audio: 3 Stars, great on female voices but the male ones are awful, they sound like children.
Story: Enjoyed the family chemistry and the stories about magical creatures (witches, wolves, ghosts) but everything else is way too extreme. I mean, they need the whole family to contact a family member? Everything is TOO much, be it tragedy or drama, is such a thing as overwritten (kind of like overacted?). The worst part is that it is too IMPOSSIBLE and not the "magical" aspect of it, I'm talking about the rest of the story, like the reverend. If you have the time to spend, it is an ok book, but if you are looking for an actual really good book, this is not. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!
Started this with no look into the synopsis. The chapters are short and sweet which makes it for an easy read. After a few chapters in I wanted to see how others had reviewed it and the general consensus is that the story is just full of drama. I could see how some people would hate that because honestly anything that could happen happened and then some. I personally loved it because there was never a dull moment in the life of the Blanchard Witches. It’s a good story full of magic and drama. Looking forward to the next book for sure.
3.5 stars for nostalgia and an entertaining tale with an enjoyable cast of characters. The author is a great storyteller who managed to keep so many threads going in different directions without creating a big ole tangled mess. I’d like to spend more time with the Blanchards—I liked them!
