3 stars… an enjoyable book overall but some parts just didn’t make sense, which is why I gave this a lower rating. It also lacked an epilogue which is never good.
So this story is about a princess of some made up country who comes to England because her entire family has been slaughtered and she thought to seek the aid of the British government. She soon realizes that no one can be trusted because just as she sends word of her whereabouts, she is met with one assassination attack after another. She quickly decides that hiding and trying to find her way back to her country is her best bet. The hero, is an Earl but dedicated his life working for the government as some sort of agent. He has been tasked with finding the princess so that she may be restored to her rightful place as ruler. He tracks her down early on in the story and once she realizes that she has no choice but to trust him, they begin their journey back to her homeland. They suffer through numerous attacks and stumbling blocks along the way, but since this is a romance novel, they eventually get a HEA.
So this story has a paranormal element to it. There are monks in this fake country who seem all knowing and all seeing. They preserve the traditions and hold on to the most sacred items. They know all along who the traitors are but they do not step in and speak against the people responsible. Instead, they allow the princess to go through great strife and pain and find her own way. I guess I just felt like this made the story a little weaker. Why have these supremely wise beings in the story when their only purpose is to step back and watch what happens?
Also, there are some relics that the traitors are supposedly looking for… somehow they can’t find them. Except later, we find out that the person leading the rebellion was also one who previously found his way through the caves and should have easily been able to find the relics? Why didn’t he just pick the other box the second time? It made no sense.
Safety is really good, heroine virgin, hero’s past not discussed AT ALL except to say that it had been a while for him.

I think Her Majesty, My Love reminds me so much of that movie, Romancing the Stone. It as that right ingredients of adventure romance. The treasure hunting, the damsel in distress, the brave hero and the hot scenes. I expect nothing less from Miss Banks.
Unfortunately, I am bored. The plot is predictable. At the end we have the hero saving the world and his damsel. They get their HEA. Lately I picked up Miss Banks book just for the pleasure of reading her steamy scenes. I have to admit she has this talent making her story sizzle.
Overall this is an OK read.

Não gostei.
Um romance de época muito diferente do habitual, com muita acção, uma história muito diferente.
Não me prendeu a leitura, até me custou bastante a terminar

DNF @ 30%. I liked book one, but this one isn’t working for me at all.
I didn’t realize til I borrowed this from the library that this is the second time I’d checked it out. The first was a few years back and I never finished it. I didn’t remember the plot at all. I managed to make it 3 hours this time and I’m DNFing again. This is so boring.
The set up had potential - fleeing princess (from made up country) ends up working with English secret service agent to try to restore her to the throne. Unfortunately there’s a lot of tedious conversations, plans that don’t make sense, and even though there’s forced proximity - I don’t feel the supposed attraction between these two. Additionally Banks has added some kind of “spiritual” element where Isabella talks to an (undeveloped) deity on who to trust or what to do next. Simon is a reluctant Earl who refuses to take over his family title because he’d rather be a spy. Unfortunately, this is repeated often but not really expanded upon.
I’m not invested in the plot or the characters at all.

Holy crap. I DNF'd at 60%. That was the most boring story I've ever listened to. I'm not even bothering with a recap because it's not worth my time.

Care fenici, se vi piacciono i romanzi storici e avventurosi, con tanta adrenalina e la giusta dose di sensualità, questo libro fa al caso vostro.
All’alba del Congresso di Vienna, sotto una cornice storica intrigante e complottistica, si svolgono le vicissitudini della principessa Isabella Chastaine di Leaudor, un’isoletta francese ricca e potente.
Unica superstite della famiglia reale, massacrata davanti ai suoi occhi, Isabella è in fuga dal suo nemico in terra inglese.
La principessa non è proprio una donzella indifesa e le sue doti combattive si vedono subito, saltando all’occhio del lettore in maniera esilarante fin dalle prime battute.
La protagonista si imbatte in Simon Rothmore, conte di Merrick, un agente al servizio della corona che è sulle sue tracce.
Dopo un’iniziale diffidenza, depistaggi e fughe improvvise, inizia il viaggio che riporterà la futura regina sul trono che le spetta. Convincere Isabella a fidarsi è molto arduo, la ragazza è provata fisicamente e moralmente. La diffidenza verso Simon è legata soprattutto al fatto che le responsabilità della strage potrebbero essere attribuite alla Corona britannica.
Sarà il pragmatico ed equilibrato conte a persuaderla e proteggerla per scortarla in patria.
La caparbietà della principessa a riprendersi il posto che le spetta sul trono di Leaudor è encomiabile, soprattutto per le sfide che sarà costretta a superare.
Sicuramente ciò che mi ha colpito è la diversità caratteriale dei due protagonisti, lei così coraggiosa e avventata, lui dannatamente rigoroso e impostato, con un gran senso del dovere, soprattutto verso il suo paese.
Il legame di fiducia che si instaura fra i due pian piano diventa sempre più forte, un sentimento di rispetto reciproco e ammirazione condito da un’evitabile attrazione fisica.
Le due personalità sono molto complesse, anche Simon ha i suoi scheletri nell’armadio e un passato complicato. Le avversità di questa avventura li porteranno a confrontarsi e aprirsi completamente per poi giungere davanti a un bivio inevitabile.
I colpi di scena si susseguono in maniera incessante catturando l’attenzione del lettore.
Niente è come sembra e i nemici sono dappertutto, le dinamiche cambiano continuamente per cui non mi sono mai annoiata fino alla fine del libro.
È stata una lettura impegnativa per la tensione dovuta ai continui attentati alla vita di Isabella e ai cambi di ambientazione, ma soprattutto perché i protagonisti sono un po’ fuori dal comune e lontani dai soliti stereotipi sdolcinati che normalmente incontro nei vari romance.
Ho adorato la gagliarda protagonista, un’eroina senza ombra di dubbio, bella e brava ma con gli attributi. Il principe azzurro un po’ musone, nel finale è una sorpresa piacevole perché ci regala un lato caratteriale inedito e per niente scontato, insomma un finale a sorpresa e ben strutturato.
Una nota di merito va a padre Ling, un personaggio secondario notevole e davvero originale, con poteri telepatici e grande carisma ma non vi dico di più altrimenti vi rovino la lettura.

3,5 - Dopo il primo volume mi aspettavo che la serie si concentrasse sul secondo dei fratelli Whittington, invece ho scoperto che sono tutti romanzi autoconclusivi, indipendenti l'uno dall'altro (cosa che non apprezzo di mio, in quanto amo ritrovare in una serie figure già note e almeno un filo conduttore principale).
Simon è già conte ma non si decide a rinunciare al suo lavoro "segreto" come agente della Corona, anche perchè ha ereditato il titolo senza volerlo realmente, e il fatto di aver perso in circostanze tragiche il fratello maggiore (erede prima di lui) ancora lo tormenta.
Come ultimo incarico, si propone di portare in salvo una principessa, ultima superstite della famiglia regnante di Leaudor, (immaginario) staterello rilevante dal punto di vista strategico e che fa gola sia agli inglesi che ai bonapartisti. Ma la principessa ha avuto un'educazione insolita e lo trascina in una girandola di peripezie, spesso a rischio della vita...
Aspetti positivi: la Banks ci regala una protagonista femminile decisamente originale, una ragazza che combatte a colpi di arti marziali e deve sostenere delle vere prove per dimostrare di essere degna del suo titolo; inoltre non si può dire che la trama non riservi colpi di scena e qualche buon effetto sorpresa.
Aspetti negativi: più che un romanzo storico, collocato nel 1815, in certi punti mi è parso un fantasy, con tanto di ricerca del tesoro e cattivi in ogni dove. A parte aver chiamato la città di partenza Londra e aver inserito di sfuggita la minaccia della fuga di Napoleone, poi è tutto un susseguirsi di invenzioni/distorsioni storiche che possono piacere o non piacere.
A mio avviso l'inserimento di troppi fatti ha reso vivace la trama, ma ha anche impedito di approfondire i personaggi, lasciandoli descritti in modo superficiale e senza coinvolgere sino in fondo.
Quindi diciamo che l'ho trovata una lettura discreta, però non esaltante.

This was slow, and also overly complicated and annoyingly convenient in a way that felt tedious and not intriguing or exciting. The reason the hero likes the heroine is pretty thin... Good thing the heroine ran into the hero because he saved her buns many, many, many times... She does have skills to defend herself, and does fight but somehow it just didn't do it for me. Overall this was a very tepid read. Maybe Maya Banks isn't for me... ? 2.5

Another book from 2007 by Ms. Banks that I really enjoyed. Yeah, there was graphic sex in it, but I skipped over that and got right down to the murder and traitorous parts of the story AND the really good love story; between an English Earl and the princess of a country called Leaudor. She was hiding in the most dangerous parts of London hoping to find someone to help her with her revenge and to take back her country. Oh, and Isabella could sure kick some ass, when you least expected it.
There was explicit sex in this, two or 3 times, but no swearing.
As to the narration: Tim Campbell, Luke Daniels and Napoleon Ryan are the three best male narrators and I’m happy it was one of them that narrated this. I can’t find a thing wrong with Tim Campbell in this book. I can’t stand a book narrated by a female and when the hero talks he sounds just like a girl. UGH!

This book was, to put it eloquently.. dope as hell.
The romance is soft and tender, and even the racy scenes seem pretty tame. But let me tell you, this story line? I have to quote Wheezy, "Loooooove it!" There is action, betrayal, political intruige, more betrayal, (I mean seriously, there are quite a few twists) a badass leading lady who fights her own battles, and an Indiana Jones-esque crusade.
In summation: Dayum.

Harwich, Inghilterra. Gennaio 1815
“Il pincipe Davide Chastain, ultimogenito del re di Leaudor, era appena sbarcato dal suo veliero quando era incappato in quella fine indegna. I bastardi lo stavano aspettando.”
Doveva rincontrarsi con sua sorella, la principessa Isabella, ma a differenza di quest’ultima, nell’agguato ci ha lasciato la pelle. La loro famiglia è stata sterminata, probabilmente per interessi espansionistici, in primis dell’Inghilterra, ma chissà se Napoleone ci ha messo lo zampino. Un vero mistero.
Isabella è l’unica sopravvissuta e, prima di Davide, ha perso il maggiore dei fratelli, Stephane, e i genitori. È in cerca di giustizia e di rivalsa, infatti auspica di impossessarsi del trono appartenuto a suo padre, ma prima deve capire da chi guardarsi le spalle.
"— Simon Rothmore, conte di Merrick, al vostro servizio […] Vi porgo le mie scuse per non essermi presentato prima. […] La principessa non lo sapeva, ma era lui la sua migliore possibilità di restare in vita."
Eppure Isabella non riesce a fidarsi, è convinta che il reggente inglese stia manovrando i suoi uomini affinché riesca ad annettere la sua terra natia all’Inghilterra. Tra i fedeli del Re c’è proprio Simon, con il compito di proteggere e scortare la principessa a Palazzo; ma contro gli ordini l’accompagna al suo paese. Ad aiutare Simon nel suo intento vi è il suo grande amico, oltre che collega, Kirk.
Padre Ling si sporse dentro e guardò Isabella. — State attenta, Altezza. Non tutto è come sembra.
Il saggio monaco sa tutto, conosce anche gli impedimenti di Isabella a diventare Regina nonostante abbia superato la “prova”. Vede il futuro, è consapevole delle alleanze e del disastro che sta per accadere, ma lascia che ogni cosa faccia il suo corso… Ma su una cosa ha sbagliato: l’amore non conosce confini.
La piacevolezza della penna di Maya Banks è innegabile come l’originalità delle sue storie. “Sua maestà, amore mio” ha una trama complessa che ben si incastra con il periodo storico. La particolarità dell’ascesa al trono di Leaudor dona una buona dose d’avventura a un romanzo che fin qui non ne è stato privato; se da un verso mi sono divertita, a tratti l’ho trovato lento, soprattutto per arrivare al castello della principessa.
Molto intensa la storia d’amore, non nego di avere un debole per il protagonista che si apre, senza filtri e senza pensare alle conseguenze di “Cosa farà il mio Paese senza di me”. Un uomo vero con le sue debolezze contro una donna più pragmatica che per il suo, di Paese, si sacrifica. Ling, il monaco, è il mentore, la guida… la rivelazione.
Un colpo di scena dopo l’altro a dividere e riunire due amanti… in un’allenza davvero strategica. Consigliato.

La piacevolezza della penna di Maya Banks è innegabile come l’originalità delle sue storie. “Sua maestà, amore mio” ha una trama complessa che ben si incastra con il periodo storico. La particolarità dell’ascesa al trono di Leaudor dona una buona dose d’avventura a un romanzo che fin qui non ne è stato privato; se da un verso mi sono divertita, a tratti l’ho trovato lento, soprattutto per arrivare al castello della principessa.
Molto intensa la storia d’amore, non nego di avere un debole per il protagonista che si apre, senza filtri e senza pensare alle conseguenze di “Cosa farà il mio Paese senza di me”. Un uomo vero con le sue debolezze contro una donna più pragmatica che per il suo, di Paese, si sacrifica. Ling, il monaco, è il mentore, la guida… la rivelazione.
Un colpo di scena dopo l’altro a dividere e riunire due amanti… in un’allenza davvero strategica. Consigliato.

Uma história de perda e Amor - O segundo livro da série “Vault collection” conta-nos uma magnifica história entre um Conde inglês e a princesa de um país denominado Leaudor. Na verdade, possui todos os elementos de um conto de fadas, muito bem descrito.
Este nosso herói é retratado como sendo um homem torturado pelo passado (algo a haver com a sua família), mas ferozmente leal e protetor, gostei bastante que não tenha sido descrito como mulherengo ou libertino.
Já a nossa heroína dá-se a conhecer como uma mulher forte e determinada, apesar de ser virgem não é ingénua de todo, sendo bastante habilidosa e capaz de se defender, gostei bastante da sua personalidade, apesar de que o processo de se apaixonar, não foi tão emocional quanto era desejado.
Simon recebe ordens para proteger a princesa enquanto a mesma se encontra em Inglaterra, mas rapidamente percebe que ela necessita mais do que apenas proteção e assume a situação de Isabella como sua, sendo ela a única sobrevivente da sua família, é necessário ascender ao trono, caso contrário o seu pequeno país deixará de ser um país real e os assassinos de sua família vencerão. Mas a jornada até ao objetivo não é fácil a diversos níveis.
Os personagens do primeiro livro não são aqui mencionados, o que me dá uma ligeira indicação de que apesar de pertencerem a uma série podem perfeitamente ser lidos de forma autónoma.
Este é um romance bem desenvolvido, preenchido com muita ação, concentrando-se mais no próprio enredo do que no romance, mas extremamente doce e comovente. Inevitavelmente prende a nossa atenção, pelo que recomendo fortemente a sua leitura.

Another amazing romance from Maya Banks!
I absolutely loved this one. It was filled with thrills and tender romance. The chemistry between Simon and Isabella was palpable and oh so beautiful 🥺
Isabella was so cool and had me sWOONING over her. The way she went to rescue Simon was so sweet. Also! The way Simon and Isabella grew to rely and trust each other on their treacherous journey to Isabella's crown got me all in my feels. They're indeed a power couple! Even though the timespan of them knowing each other was really short, I could see how intense feelings could have developed in life-or-death situations such as the ones they faced, and blossomed into love. Simon's confession before they plunged into the waterfall almost had me in tears.
This one absolutely captivated me from beginning to end, and notwithstanding the overly-convenient ending, this was an overall amazing read. I truly wish Maya Banks would continue writing historical romances but one can only foolishly hope 🥺

Nice Action Romance
Well written. I did enjoy it but not as much as her highland series. I think the romance between the hero and heroine in this book should have been developed more. The hero was portrayed as a man tortured by his past (something to do with his family). I like that he is not portrayed as a rake or womanizer. He is just your regular James Bond minus the womanizing. The heroine is portrayed as strong and determined. She is virginal but not naive. She is skilled and able to defend herself. I like their personalities but I felt that their connection or process of falling in love was not as emotionally evocative as I would like it to be. I wish there was an epilogue. Overall, it is a nice read.

This story had all the elements of a fairytale! A Queen and her commoner, who would be so majestic in his love for her. Of course they endured so many ups & downs, ins & outs... beginning as almost enemies to fall in love. There was sense of mystic through the holy man, and Isabelle’s ability to hear and feel the wisdom of her father, and the love of her mother, even though they had both perished. Through their journey they found a love that could, and would last a life time. M Banks has thrilled me again with her story of loss, great loss, and love, great love.

I loved this book. Merrick is a hero after my own heart. He takes on Princess Isabella's plight as his own. This is a fantasy book that was well thought out and told beautifully.
Princess Isabella is the last survivor of her family and if she can't manage to ascend the throne her small country will no longer be a Royal country and the men who killed her family will win. In order to become Queen, she must retrieve certain valuable items hidden on her island and then have the Monks on her Island state she is Queen.
Merrick is an Englishman that gets told to protect the Princess while she is in England but he realizes that she needs his help to make her journey a success.

Este tinha espinhas... Não me conseguiu agarrar... pela primeira vez em muitos livros, tive de lutar para chegar ao fim. Entre países que não existem, um ligeiro sobrenatural à mistura e uma tentativa de integração histórica que falhou em absoluto, dei comigo a suspirar e a pensar "mais uma incongruência..." Se o culpado era efectivamente o irmão mais velho, não sabia já onde estavam as relíquias? Para quê tanta palhaçada a arrastar-se por meses? E com a Europa em tumulto por causa das guerras napoleónicas, para quê inventar um país que nem se percebeu bem onde fica, excepto que era fronteiriço com França?

I love Maya Banks, and after the first story in The Vault Collection, I was ready for more. This story did not disappoint me. I love a romance with mystery and action, and this book has both. Merrick, the hero, is somewhat tortured by his past, yet fiercely loyal and protective. Isabella is also tortured by past events and is extremely strong, intelligent, and very capable. Together they do amazingly well and are quite a good team. There is very nice romance, intrigue, mystery, and lots of action.
A thoroughly enjoyable read, and listen.

This book was constant action and suspense. Isabella was a strong capable woman, but she had her vulnerable side. Simon was a strong seemingly emotionless secret agent. Princess Isabella was able to rely on Simon to keep her safe and return her to her rightful place. Along the way, Simon and Isabella fell in love. When she returned to Leaudor, Isabella discovers a heartbreaking truth and needed to fight through many obstacles to achieve her throne. Just when you think it would calm down, and they would see happiness, it gets worse. Thank goodness the ending finally gives you what you want.

I swear this book was written by a man. Even when we have a literal ruler of a country, the men are still making all the decisions, doing a lot the planning, partaking in all the meddling. This is unbelievable.
The story is interesting. This isn't a romance book. There's basically no romance in it at all, and the spice is even more sparse. This is an adventure fantasy book set in regency England, complete with mystical elements. The plot is unique and I liked the heroine, even if she was underutilized in her own damn story.

This completely took me by surprise. I don't generally read excerpts when it comes to authors I like, so I didn't know what this was about (and I also read this first and it turns out this is the second book.) I thought it was going to be one of those romance stories, but no, this is one action-packed romance. It focuses more on the plot rather than the romance but it's still sweet and heartwarming.

I have read many of this author's work and they have never failed to delight me. While this book is about kings and queens, the plot was well developed and held my attention.It was a good read for anyone who likes a little romance mixed with spies and history.

Got bored about chapter 22 and skipped to the last few chapters. Tim Campbell's narration was 5-star as always. The Hero Merrick was likable but I didn't care for the heroine Isabella. This story was not nearly as engaging as the first in the series.

I usually like Maya Banks stories. This one was so boring to me. I finished it to see if it got any better. There was some intrigue, suspense and a tiny bit of steam. I just could not get into this story. Im sorry!

It just wasn’t that great. It couldn’t hook me and made me lose all the interest I had after Duchess of my Heart. The narration also wasn’t that helpful. The book compared her accent to Irish but the narrator made it sound almost like bad French? It just kind of put me off even further.
