Vatra i ništa

Rate this book

When We Say
When we say
we've said what we didn't want to say
When we stay silent we've said nothing
but we've hidden a lot.
Every word means the same
as its own silence.

Branko Miljković died prematurely in 1961 at the age of 27. He was found hanging from a tree in Zagreb, a controversial incident that was officially recorded as a suicide. He was born in Niš to a Serb father and a Croat mother.

He is sometimes called "the Serbian prince of poets", having influenced all that followed, was a close friend of Sartre and leader of the Neo-Symbolist movement which had the mission of bringing together Surrealism and Symbolism.

He famously refused membership and connection with the Communist Party of Yugoslavia which brought about a hostile atmosphere from his social circle and from a government that wouldn't publish his poetry, but his obvious talent found great success with the people - his verses have been used in many songs, including by my beloved Bijelo Dugme, the most popular band ever to exist in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and one of the most notable acts of the Yugoslav rock scene and Yugoslav popular music in general.

"Ko ne sluša pjesmu, slušaće oluju."
(He who does not listen to song shall be listening to storms - from the song Pljuni I zapjevaj, Spit and Sing)

To this day, there is no concrete conclusion about his death.

“Ubi me prejaka reč. Ne stigoh da se sklonim."

Branko Miljković's name is not known to a wide audience of Europe or the world, mostly due to the geopolitical circumstances in post-war Europe, here is a great article about this great writer's short life.

Bonus:

Everyone will write poetry

A dream is an ancient and forgotten truth
that no one knows how to verify
now a stranger sings who is sea and worry
east is west of west false movement is the fastest
now wisdom and birds sing my neglected diseases
a flower between ashes and fragrance
those who refuse to survive love
and lovers that turn back time,
a garden whose scents the earth does not recognize
and an earth that remains faithful to death
because this world is not the only concern of the sun, but one day
where the heart was, the sun will stand
and there will be no such words in human speech
that will if the song renounces
poetry, everyone will write
the truth will be present in all the words
in the places where the song is the most beautiful,
the one who first sang will retire,
leaving the song to others,
I accept the great thought of future poetics:
an unhappy man cannot be a poet, I accept the condemnation of singing crowds:
WHO CANNOT LISTEN TO A SONG WILL LISTEN TO A STORM
but:
WILL FREEDOM BE ABLE TO SING
LIKE THE SLAVES SANG ABOUT HER?

One of the clearest, brightest poetic voices in the (classic) South Slavic Canon.

Great mastery of metaphor and language.

One of the peaks in the sameself Canon (along, say, Vasko Popa in poetry, and Ivo Andrić, Miloš Crnjanski and Vladan Desnica in prose.

Great starting point for the serious student of the Slavic Literary Modernism.

Feels weird even attempting to rate this - one of the greatest poets we've had and one of my forever favourites. Revisted this classic during autumn again and I feel it on an even deeper level than I did before. ❤
