Nick Spalding is an author who, try as he might, can't seem to write anything serious.
Before becoming a full-time author, he worked in the communications industry, mainly in media and marketing. As talking rubbish for a living can get tiresome (for anyone other than a politician), he thought he'd have a crack at writing comedy fiction - with a very agreeable level of success so far, it has to be said. Nick is now a multimillion seller. This flabbergasts him every single day.
Nick is now in his fifties - and is rather annoyed at the universe about it, because it gave him no choice in the matter. He's also addicted to Thai food and roast potatoes (not together), loves Batman and Warhammer, and has a dreadful singing voice.
It was a struggle to finish this book. Unlike the earlier installments in the series, this one just wasn't cutting it for me most of the time. The characters were too whiney. Plot points were predictable. Each chapter is like an episode with same formula: things start out well intentioned only to go bad. How many times can you read different scenarios take the same turn over and over again and still be entertained by it?
Anyway there was promise towards the end... genuine conflict and conflict resolution. So I gave this one three stars, not two. I hope, if there are future installments, that they are better works on the whole than this one was.
Jamie and Laura are moving to Australia for Laura's new job. There they have some interesting experiences with the wildlife and some fun stories about the differences between their uptight/proper English personalities and the more open/laid back personalities of the Aussies.
Yeah, so this one wasn't as funny as the previous books in the series. I felt a few of the jokes were recycled, or at least their subject matter was. It was still entertaining. It just wasn't as "laugh my socks off" as some of his other books, so I was a tad disappointed.
Uvijek briljantno i humoristično napisano. Treći nastavak u kojemu pratimo obiteljski život Jamieja, Laure i njihove kćerkice Poppy na drugome kraju svijeta, ni manje ni više nego u Australiji.
Svakom stranicom me sve više iznenađuje tijek događaja da jednostavno nisam prestala listati stranice do samoga kraja.
I loved the first book in this series but it's been a steady downhill slide since then. This book was only vaguely entertaining. There were definitely parts that made me chuckle but in general the book just felt repetitive. How many times can ridiculous things happen to the same people?
When I read Mad Love by Nick, I absolutely fell in love with it as it had me staying up all night to finish it because it kept me laughing. So I eagerly picked this one up hoping to have the same thoughts. I had initially stopped halfway through because the humor in this one felt forced and unbelievable, and I wasn't enjoying it.
Some times, I need time to go by to try a book out again, so I picked it up again today and it was even worse than before. I skimmed and eventually skipped to the end. I'm glad I didn't force myself to chug through it. This book came far before Mad Love, though, so Nick definitely figured out a better balance of humor and realism in his writing! I'll absolutely still pick up his books since Mad Love when given the chance, as that one was completely charming and loveable and I still recommend it to this day.
This book really annoyed me! The author is so crude in regards to women’s bodies. The male character found photos that a woman had taken on his phone to try and ruin his marriage, and he stated that if he had seen them before his wife, he would delete them.. after having a wank. The attitude towards what is meant to be a monogamous relationship, and male gaze is just appalling. I was unable to finish it as I was too disgusted by the behaviour it encourages. It’s a shame, as the first chapter really made me laugh 😔
Another instalment from the Newman's. This one set in Australia. This book had some funny scenes for sure, but I think it would be even funnier for non-Australians. I'm Australian need I say more? I still loved it even though it wasn't as funny as the first two. I'm going to dive straight into the 4th book now. Bit sad about that because there won't be any more Spalding humour to be had until the bugger writes something new. I saved this series of his to read last.
Nick get typing I don't want to wait too long for another book.
I really enjoyed this instalment in the Love Series. It was a bit more grown up than the previous two books as it dealt with marital issues, work and juggling family life.
Jamie, Laura and Poppy move to Australia as Laura gets a new job there, and the Australian backdrop provides a refreshing change of scenery. They still manage to get into cringey and funny situations of course.
I will definitely be reading the next and last in this series.
Loved this series by Nick Spalding, he is comedic genius. He takes everyday events and treats them with irreverent humor and emotion. I love Laura and Jamie's struggle from dating in book one, having a baby in book two, moving to Australia to try to make a living in book three. Parts of this were a little slower than the other books but honestly when I needed a good laugh I read a few chapters. I was rewarded with lots laugh out loud, oh my, and sweet moments.
I generally love anything Nick Spalding writes. Definitely lots of laughs, many of them laugh out loud hilarious and almost to the point of tears. What seemed like a great opportunity for this little family was a disaster in so many ways leading to crazy misconstrued events and outlandish situations. Well worth reading.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2, rounded up… I was going to round down, but the ending changed my mind! I love that I can’t predict the decisions the characters are going to make. One of the things I love about this author, for sure. Not my favorite book of his, but really enjoyed it! Especially considering the fact that I didn’t read the other books before this in the series, lol
One of the few books in my life I couldn't finish.
The attempted humour is infantile, the characters are unlikeable, the storyline is...barely there?
I didn't know this was a third book in a series before picking it up, though. Maybe I would have liked the characters more had I read the previous two books, I'll give it that. Still, a very painful read (the 65% I managed to, at least).
Another laugh out loud book! Honestly love reading your collection, they never fail to make me smile and laugh. I would highly recommend this whole series of books by Nick Spalding.
book 3 ends on a good measure of frivolous fun and wacky storyline(s). Too many belly laughs and/or chuckles throughout the entire series. Really, really enjoyed these books and will recommend to my hubby as he'll definitely enjoy these with the good amount of "off the wall" and raunchy banter.
Seeing love from both sides in a different country told in the fabulous way only Mr Spalding can made me laugh out loud on several occasions. You know it's a good read when you're wondering what will happen next and when will you get chance to continue reading!
A romantic comedy written by a man! I think men would like this story, and would find it very funny (if they like crude/crass humor) but I can't think of any men who would be willing to read it, due to it's being a rom com. It's pretty sweet, though.
I love these books, it's such a fun series. The problems Jaimie and Laura manage to get themselves into are laugh out loud funny. I can only hope that there will be more adventures coming in the future. Thanks for a really fun and enjoyable book.
3.5 Stars. While there's still a ton of ridiculous actions in this one, the story is a little darker with job stress and marital strife. Plus, they're raising a potential monster child which they will regret.
Love Nick’s books - super cringey at times but also laugh out loud funny. If you aren’t listening to the audio book, do it! Narrators add so much to the story and make it really pop and so much funnier.
I have read all three books in this series and enjoyed every one. The comedy, disasters, and writing are superb, as is the love shining through it all. This series will be one I'll keep on my shelf for a long time.
