After reading the first book in this series, Fled for Refuge, there's a definite need to read the following book in a hurry. That cliffhanger at the end of book one might get resolved ... slightly. Though I'm not sure how resolved it actually was, and that makes for one suspenseful read!
Characters: It's fun to have a series all about the same characters. For some reason, I feel as if those are less popular these days? But it's great to be able to come back to characters you already know. First off, Tony ... my poor Tony! Dude is a complete trooper. And he's so wise and kind to Merri. I wish I could be half as brave and kind as he is! Merri ... I love her. She's the most relatable character for me, and I could understand her questions and her battle to cling to the truth even when life was going sideways. She was portrayed very realistically - not every day in a Christian's life is sunshine and daisies, and there are times when we have to trust the Lord even when our flesh shouts at us to doubt Him. As for the other characters, everyone knows how much I love Rick. He's just the man, and I loved watching him in his element of being a great doctor and a great friend. And then Brent, who is literally the comedic relief of the entire thing. He's so much fun! Wes and Matilda are still their kind, sweet selves, and I'm glad Merri and Tony have them to fall back on during rough times.
Writing Style/Setting/Plot: The writing style was super clean and concise and fit the book well. And the setting ... well, let's just say it's a little too close to our lives today. It definitely has the ability to make you think, though, and that's the sign of a good book. And the plot ... wow, there are some interesting twists along the way, and the ending is absolutely golden! But in spite of a lot of suspense, there's also slower moments to let you catch your breath, get to know the characters, and listen to the truths the characters are learning.
Moral/Theme: So much good stuff here! I think the overarching theme of the series is finding the Lord as Refuge in the midst of a world that is certainly not a refuge. However, I love that the characters find the Lord as their Refuge not just from outward evils and perils, but also as they struggle with inward trials. No matter our struggles, the Lord is a strong Refuge. And when we look to Jesus, our Refuge, we are eternally safe. Definitely a lesson I need to learn anew so many times!
Overall, this was a great addition to the series, and it offered a great dosing of Biblical truth that is so needed. Would highly recommend, and the next book needs to come along shortly!

Review:
4.5 stars.
*rubs hands* Let's dive into this!
There’s a reason I don’t read Christian dystopian that much, or dystopian of any kind for that matter. Why? Because good grief, it makes for some tense reading! But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it 😝 If you want some action, this is the book for you. It’ll keep you flipping those pages (or e-pages, whichever you have). Like, it might become a problem because you’re supposed to be doing chores or something else boring but you MUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO POOR TONY!!! I say ‘poor Tony’ for a reason, because man, the guy had it harder in this book than he did in the last one *winces* I mean, take a look at this quote:
“Yet he couldn’t do much more than sit around and read a suspense book that wasn’t as suspenseful as the first time he’d read it. Probably because he’d lived through worse than the characters.” (Page 93)
I feel so bad for him right there 😬
And CRAIG!! Craig came back! I knew he would! I think I’m one of the few people that thought Tony might have been just a *little* tough on him the first time around. But to watch Tony realize that he could be, indeed, he had been Craig many times was both heartening and humbling to read.
Oh, by the way, can we talk about Scott for a moment? (Spoilers from here on out in parentheses): (He was literally only there for the first 5 pages and then boom, he’s gone 😢 Like, ouch, that was quick. I liked him! He died well 💜 Just sorry he didn’t get to live out his faith a little longer. An example of why I don’t read a whole lot of this genre.)
Merri doesn't get an easy introduction to the faith either. I just want to give her a nice big hug and some chocolate sometimes. She’s really trying but switching from doubts to faith isn’t easy sometimes. I get that, I understand it. I also understand her struggle to trust. To trust that it will be okay in the end, and to believe that God truly will work all things out for good. Also, she wins a Best Sister award for bringing along Tony’s Bible 😉 I just think that was so sweet.
There’s also a great cast of side characters. Wes and Matilda, for example, they’re awesome. So kind, so wise, so caring, you’ve got to love characters like them. Brent and Rick are such sturdy, faithful fellows, nothing had better happen to them *glares at author* They’re like, the awesome friend duo.
But I’ll just tell you that (minor-ish spoiler:) everything does turn out alright in the end, okay? So go ahead and read this, if Christian dystopian is your thing, or even if it isn’t but you still like faith-filled, fast paced adventure, with little to no unrealism mixed in.
Eagerly looking forward to the conclusion of this series!

Thank you so much Kristiana for letting me read this! If you guys would like to meet her, here are the links to her Goodreads, website, instagram and pinterest:
Honestly, I don’t know where to start. Anyone who follows my reviews knows I never write organized reviews, it’s always just me gushing about how much I loved this or disliked that…this will be the same way…lol... Oh my goodness guys, this book!!! Wow! My heart is still trying to recover….so, let’s dive into some of the reasons I love this book! Kristina has once again brought us the perfect blend of suspense and downtime…I don’t know how she does it, but Tony could be making a cup of coffee and I’d be on the edge of my seat afraid something is going to happen to him! Like it’s that good guys! The theme of the story is incredible! I loved it! Doubts plague us all, I know I’ve had my fair share over the years, and I love the beautifully simplistic reminder to look to Jesus! That He is enough, that He is always there! Beautiful! Bringing tears to my eyes just thinking about it! He is our Refuge in the Storm! For me Merri’s floundering faith journey is incredibly relatable, I’ve been where she was at…where you can’t see Him and you don’t think He cares…how could He when all this bad stuff is happening to such a strong Christian…and that reminder to look to Him, it hits home. (Totally not wiping away tears) I’m telling you the decisions these characters had to make were breaking my heart! I hope if I ever have to make decisions like that I won’t cave, but I’m not so sure…I’d definitely need to look to Jesus as Tony did. How do you sum up a book that was incredibly touching and suspenseful and just about made you break in more ways than one? I can’t. But I am willing to gush about characters a bit more!!! I love Rick! He’s a naturopathic doctor, he’s super smart, and thinks things through to like the extreme….kind of reminds me of myself in that last respect…lol…I love the way he comforts Merri, the playful friendship he and Brent have…and just everything about him! Rick is the man! Brent is a nice addition too…he’s strong, but also compassionate, he’s funny, and he’s just a great side character! There were some great scenes between him and Merri! Wes and Matilda are just….ahhh, refreshing! In the midst of all this crazy that’s going on they are the solid, wise, older people who make me just….ah, they give me a moment of peace in the turmoil. And there are some other characters….Some you might remember from book 1, but I won’t disclose their names because that’s kind of spoilery…lol…but I love the addition of them in this book! It was beautiful! I also love how Kristina doesn’t just injure a character and three minutes later he’s running around doing insane things….no, the pain lingers, it weakens, it pulses to life with new injuries…it’s done so well! I can’t stand when an injury is received in a book and the character doesn’t even feel it…Kristina doesn’t do that and for that, I am supremely grateful! Also, I want to say that the settling of the book is just, so easy to imagine. It’s enough like our current USA that your mind pulls it up and then all this slightly, almost slowly transitioned stuff is added, things that are highly believable. Poisoned water, poisoned food, a lot of other things that all add together to make you stop, think, and wonder…while pointing you back to the only one who can save us. Our Refuge in this storm! Final thoughts, this book was beautiful, amazing, touching, incredible, fantastic, I love it!!! I can’t wait for book 3!!! And yeah…this was incredible!
*I received a free copy of this book from the author, but all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to leave a good review.*
Synopsis: Even though Tony Dorence has returned home from prison, alive only by the grace of God, he, his sister, and his friends are plagued by many more trials that threaten their lives and their faith. Will they stand strong in the face of doubt and persecution?
Ooh, boy. This...this long-awaited (I waited a day...still too long) sequel to Fled for Refuge (one word: cliffhanger) was both everything I wanted and nothing like I’d hoped.
If that’s confusing, don’t worry. I’ll explain.
Refuge from the Storm picks up right where the first book left off—and Y’ALL. Tony survives. He comes home. Merri and Wes and Matilda and Rick and Brent are still waiting for him. It’s epic.
Except I feel like 50% of the book was Tony sleeping and Merri worrying. There was just a lot of repetition and not a lot of drama or action (until the very end...which was the best part). As much as I like how realistic Tony’s recovery was and how relatable Merri’s doubts were, it was kind of excessive. I needed more to the plot; otherwise, it dragged.
BUT THEN. But then...something crazy happened, and Y’all, that could have been SUCH an epic twist...but that too seemed like it wasn’t fully fleshed out.
What would’ve helped was some more drama (I. Love. Drama.), with a hint of comedy and (maybe, but I won’t ask for it) romance or something. Something...more. (Like...what if Drew came back? That would’ve been so awesome. Terrible for the characters, but awesome for me. *winks*)
Speaking of the characters, I could see Rick and Brent being such amazing characters with an interesting dynamic with Tony and Merri, but they really bled into each other. (I honestly couldn’t tell them apart sometimes.) If they’d been more defined and developed, they would’ve added such a fun element to the story.
Truth be told...this could’ve been a novella. I feel like some of the repetitive scenes could’ve been cut to make the pacing and length more conducive to all that actually occurred in the story. (*glares at her own 210k word-long epic* I may need someone to tell me this...)
As it was, even though the sequel fell flat in some areas, it really picked up at the very end. No spoilers, but I am SO stoked for the next book! Just...all the vibes, guys. This is taking me back to my Left Behind days; I can just feel the intensity and see everything unfold! I sincerely hope the next book takes advantage of the build-up Refuge from the Storm gave it!
Honestly, the whole book is worth that ending. And Tony not dying, of course! *winks* I LOVE the apologetic themes and how relevant the messages are! Definitely gets you thinking about what you would do in that situation—if you would choose your life but lose your soul by denying your Lord—which is something we should all ask ourselves in a culture that looks down on Christians! I think Hall wrote those struggles so well, in a way that was relatable and authentic rather than the characters already being perfect and doing everything just right!
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary review copy from the lovely author! All opinions expressed are my own!
Refuge from the Storm is the explosive second title in Kristina Hall's Refuge series, and is just as action packed and intense as the first title was. In a world that's become corrupt beyond measure, one group of people will learn what it truly means to suffer for Christ and stand for faith when the rest of the world is willing to do anything but.
Told in both POV's of siblings Tony and Merri, the reader follows along on a heart wrenching journey that picks up shortly after the first book left off. Tony has been locked away in a high security government prison facing death for choosing to stand for his Savior. Merri hasn't had word from him since, and when he all of a sudden shows up at her door after many months, she's shocked beyond words. However, a greater threat is emerging than either could ever expect, and amongst the way, a blast from the past shows up that has both Tony and Merri questioning their faith and questioning how they can ever show forgiveness the way His Word instructs us we must.
As always, with any title I pick up by this author, I was blown away by the emphasis on faith and salvation. Kristina Hall truly writes "Christian" books, and writes in a way that causes one to truly evaluate what they would do in similar situations if standing up for Jesus brings unimaginable consequences. I always appreciate that her writing is clean and precise, and that the story is always action packed from start to finish. I was quite surprised how quickly I read through this one, and now I'm definitely looking forward to book three.
This one definitely got me thinking, and I think it's safe to say that the author has written a thought provoking piece of prose that I think every Christian could benefit from reading. I appreciated how realistically Merri's journey with doubting her faith was represented, as it is definitely something that every Christian experiences at some point, and I felt it made her much more relatable as a character.
With an emphasis on standing for His truth, forgiveness, and redemption, and trusting Him no matter what the world chooses to throw your way, Refuge from the Storm was a heart wrenching story that kept me glued to the pages from start to finish.
I do wish we'd gotten a little bit more from the redemptive arc that's included in part of the story, but I'm hoping maybe book three will dive a little more into it. That's all I'm going to say about it however, as I definitely don't want to spoil anything for anyone else.
Final Rating: 4/5.
Thanks so much to Kristina Hall for allowing me to read and review this one!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Refuge from the Storm. A story of faith, of treachery, of holding tight to what really matters. Of pain, yet of healing. Of tears, and of forgiveness. When a novel starts with some poor guy escaping death and from prison, well, you can imagine what follows. I read through it in a matter of hours, hanging on until the last word. Maybe I still am. Of course, neither Tony nor Merri could die, but they certainly didn't know that. Poor guys. Great. I think if I read much more by the Hall sisters, it will really get to my head... but yeah, too late. Oh, well! Onto book #3!
Note: I received a free copy of this book and was not required to provide a review of any sort. All thoughts and options are my very own, only swayed slightly by certain poor characters.
Plagued with guilt for having been the unwitting cause of Tony's arrest, Merri's faith is floundering. Even when Tony miraculously escapes from prison, seeing the state he's in plunges her further into doubt. Tony is in poor physical shape, but a greater blow falls when Craig and Amelia turn up with their young daughter. Face to face with Craig's regret and knowing first-hand the horrors of prison, can Tony learn to forgive? And when a still greater test comes, can any of them truly stand firm in their faith and remember their only true refuge from the storm?
This is a compelling, thought-provoking and inspiring story. Fortunately on the day I received it I didn't have a huge amount that I HAD to do, because, well, I pretty much didn't put it down until I finished it. Few authors touch me to the extent that this author has in this series - I guess it feels like it has the potential to be close to home at some future stage? Certainly it involves some difficult questions that various Christians down through history have had to face, though we in the Western world so far haven't of recent years. Anyway, the upshot was that I was so caught up in the story that it was hard to look away - though not always easy to watch either. I really felt for all the characters, and I was particularly thrilled that Tony and Craig did make things right - because I wasn't altogether happy with Tony's behaviour toward Craig in book 1. And yes, this series is probably best read as a series rather than as standalone books. Finally, one of my problems with this sort of book is that it can feel like there's no answer that is at once reasonable and happy. That is, either the government must have some unrealistic change of mind or people have to die. Well, this book manages to find satisfying answers so far - I'm eager to see what happens with the rest of the series!
Content warning: Though this is completely clean (which I really appreciate), Tony and Craig do end up imprisoned by a brutal regime and beaten. The scenes do not feel to me gratuitous or overly graphic, but readers may want to be aware they're there.
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
I know this is a BIG rating drop from book one and I really wish it wasn’t, but I have to be honest about how I feel about it. So we’re going to start with what I liked—because there are things I liked!—then what I disliked. Also please note most of this review is probably more of a “it’s me, not you” sort of deal, so keep that in mind if you’re interested in reading this book. 😉
What I liked:
* The suspense. This author really knows how to write good suspense that’s ACTUALLY suspenseful! Because I can’t tell you how many “suspense” books I’ve read that have zero zip suspense to the point where it’s like why is this called suspense??? This one is not one of those. * Tony’s realistic recovery time. I liked the realism of just how stinking LONG it was taking him to heal after ten months of torture. * This dystopian world isn’t the typical “the government is bad, let’s take them down and bring something better!” (which I love!) but more of a quiet survival story in the midst of the world turning upside down (which I also love but don’t see a lot of). It actually reminds me a lot of the TV series Star Wars: Resistance which follows a similar plot line, and I really like the uniqueness of it. * The cover is super stunning and sets the tone for the story perfectly.
What I disliked:
* Tony’s recovery. I know I said I liked it, but it also kinda crawled through the middle of the book to the point of being annoying and could have been sped up with a few time skips. But this perfectly jumps right into my biggest issue with the book, which is… * The constant repetition of literally EVERYTHING—the characters’ worries, prayers, everything they talked about, everything they thought about, etc, etc, ETC. It got to the point that whenever I hit those places I’d cringe and start skimming. This book would have done much better being a novella and having cut half the repetition out. * The characters are flat (which was also a thing in book one I forgot to mention in that review) and I couldn’t connect with them at all. Also I didn’t feel as if they had grown any from book one and were basically the same. This is a very plot driven book, but since characters make or break a book for me this ended up being a let down. * The preachiness of the Christian message went up in this book and it annoyed me. Though those were often the parts being repeated constantly which could be the real reason I didn’t like it. 🤷🏼♀️ * The villain is just…why???? I have no idea his motives or why he wants these characters over any other Christian he can nab and force to do his will. This is definitely the weakest part of the book as I have no idea why to anything about him. Hopefully this will be explained in the third book.
Despite not liking a lot of this book I’m still curious to see how it all ends. And if the characters escape this alive because it’s not looking great for them right now…
Content: characters are injected with a death drug; death and grief; characters are tortured and barely survive in prison (not detailed); a character suffers from PTSD; characters are threatened and beaten (not detailed)
***Note: I received a free copy of the book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are most assuredly my own, and I wasn’t required to write a positive review. If I was, I wouldn’t have read it. 😜***
This book-this series-is a must read for anyone who wonders about end times possibilities. There's suspense, action, family relationships, and Jesus. I loved it.
Thoughts as I was reading, so longer description:
-I love the relationship that Merri and Tony have. While I have brothers, we don't have this closeness. Not to this extent, anyway. I found myself a little envious of it, and pray that my own kids DO keep and develop those relationships with each other as adults.
-I love the boldness and faith they have. Even amongst the doubts, they have boldness and faith. Do I? Not like I should. I can learn a lot from these characters.
-We need to make sure we memorize scripture. We don't know what the future holds and if we'll always have our Bibles, whether physical or digital. As far as digital Bibles, those can be changed without our even knowing it. I need to do better with my kids about this.
-I had to put this down for a little while, just to slow my heart rate! So. Much. Suspense. But then I had to pick it up because I needed to know what happens!
-I literally have chills reading this.
-Tears. So many tears. We just don't know what our witnessing can accomplish.
Wrap up: you need to read this.

Another great book by Kristina Hall. The struggles that Tony and Merri wrestle with are very thought-provoking. In a western culture where people don't necessarily have to die for their faith, it can be difficult to know how we would react when faced with the horrors these characters were, yet even in the midst of doubts, the Word of God was foremost in the story.
I don't want to say too much because I don't like spoilers, but it really made me ponder my own faith and how I would deal with it should I be placed in a situation where I was asked to deny Christ. Very well done.
I have to say, this was a tough read for me because it centered more around the doubts of the main characters, which made it bleak at times. There are also some scenes that are somewhat violent due to parts of the plot that made it necessary. Again, I don't want to include spoilers, but the violence definitely wasn't gratuitous.
Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Christian suspense and dystopian novels with a redemption arc. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out in book 3!

There's not too much I can say about this one that wouldn't be spoilers for the preceding book,Fled for Refuge. The characters pick up ten months from where we left them, continuing the dual perspective of the devout Christian, Tony, and his doubtful sister, Merri.
I'll echo what I said for the first book: The faith elements were integral to the story, unlike much of the Christian fiction currently published that often leaves me searching for the Christian content. Hall's love for the Lord is apparent in each and every chapter and the growth within the characters was a delight to read. In this entry in particular I loved the way doubt was handled and portrayed. I also greatly appreciated the capitalization of pronouns for God, as sadly this is also a rarity in Christian publishing today- and thus, worth noting.
You guys. Just wow...I experienced a ride and a half and I could not be more pleased!
Likes: ~Just like Fled for Refuge, the Christian content was out of this world. So many great themes were covered including, but not limited to, overcoming doubt, standing firm in our beliefs no matter the cost, forgiving our enemies, and my personal favorite, clinging to the promise that God is our refuge. No matter the situation- God is with us. Also, there was one part that has stuck with me- reading about Tony's enthusiasm and joy at being able to read his Bible to his heart's content was very convicting. I have two Bible, a study Bible and one I take to church, and I take them both for granted. ~So many "what would I do that in situation" moments! They really brought the story to life. ~It was great seeing the same characters again. I was especially happy to see ~I was really glad to see a drop in name-calling from Tony. ~The suspense was great! I liked that it wasn't so much in your face, as it was waiting for the other shoe to drop. I had a hard time putting it down when things started going down.
Dislikes: ~There's only one aspect that bothered me: the repetitive apologies. Realistically, it made sense given everything happening and Tony's situation, but it was just a lot.
Overall: ~4.5 stars!! I enjoyed this so much and appreciated all of the Godly messages and reminders. I'm so excited to see what happens next ~Highly recommend this if you enjoy books about the end of days/Christian dystopia/government overreach.
Refuge From The Storm is the second book in the Refuge Series by Kristina Hall. She is quite talented in her story writing, with action scenes from the get-go that have your heart racing from the danger. Seriously, the very first scene had death knocking at the door. Yet, throughout the story, Jesus was the Refuge that her characters turned to time and again. He is ALWAYS who we should turn to in time of trouble. This book was well done and I highly recommend it.
More suspense❤️More of the same great characters from the first book (and a few not so great)❤️More spiritual tests for said characters…More timeless reminders of how we need the Lord.
There is a cliff hanger again at the end, so definitely have the third book handy! You’ll want to start it for sure immediately 😉
After reading the cliffhanger at the end of Fled for Refuge, I was excited to see how Kristina would move on with the characters and plot in Fled from the Storm. I haven't read too many Christian dystopian/suspense novels so the movement of the plot was a bit different from what I'm used too, but I still enjoyed. The one thing I've noticed is that the plot does drag a little and is a bit repetitive at some points. I understand that a suspense novel is supposed to increase the tension slowly over the plot, but I feel like some events in this book could have been cut out or shortened.
Personally, the faith aspect did feel a bit preachy sometimes but there were some scenes and quotes that really affected me and reminded me to always trust God no matter what. <3
One aspect I'm really hoping Kristina goes into more details about in book 3 is the world and government. She's mentioned so many interesting things that the government has done but she hasn't given the "why" for them yet. I honestly am intrigued about why these things have happened and because it's not been explained yet I feel like that's a plot hole.
Tony really struggled emotionally and physically in this book, and I felt for him so much. I love how no matter what Tony went through, he still cared for Merri and always was checking in on her. Merri's character didn't change much. I know that it's common to have doubts and fears, but I would have liked her to grow a little more in her faith. Overall, I feel like there wasn't much character growth for any of the characters. They all kinda remained the same. None of them really grew in their faith and the same character flaws stuck with them, especially with Tony. So I'm hoping their characters develop more in book 3.
Content concerns: People are hurt and there are mentions of dead bodies but nothing is graphic.
If you want a clean, suspenseful Christian read, then I highly recommend this novel! Yes, the characters can be a bit flat and I would like to see more details of the world they're living in, but overall, the plot was intriguing and I can't wait to read the next book!!
