King Ellie discovered her love for dark romance through reading and as she read more and more of them, she discovered that this was the genre she wanted to write in. The antiheroes and what others would classify as villains, she sees them as an opportunity to show what a hurt, heartbroken male who is seen as anything but can love harder. The heroines get a chance to be loved deeply and only by the antiheroes. Love isn't always just black and white... it's a spectrum of color.

Just a heads up, there’s sexual violence in this book and it’s committed by the hero. It is pretty gross and ruined my ability to find anything sexy or likable about the character. King Ellie definitely writes well and explores some really dark tones in her books but this is a little bit too dark for me.

Look, I get the guy is a mafioso and even there’s attempts to make him seem softer but the sexual violence is not something I care to read in the romance genre.

I want to start by saying that I wasn’t in any way interested in this book because of the cover, the blurb or because of familiarity with the author’s works. The whole thing began when I was searching for random books that were associated with my country and came across this one absolutely on random. Dark mafia romance and the guy is my ethnicity? I was intrigued because I’ve never seen slavic representation other than Russians, except for the Polish guy from Sophie Lark and the Serb from Ana Huang. Did I have any expectations though? None. In fact, I knew it was gonna be bad…I just didn’t expect it to be THAT bad…

First of all, an “honourable” mention for the usage of my country, because that is why we are here in the first place, right?
The title of the book is literally “The Bulgarian”. Despite this, we find out that the MMC, Aleksi Petrova, is Bulgarian-Armenian, which I have absolutely no issue with. However, if the title emphasises his Bulgarian side then readers would probably assume he must feel more connected to this half of his culture. So tell me why throughout the whole book he uses words in Armenian but says a word in Bulgarian ONCE. Again, absolutely no hate to the Armenian language or people, but just from the title you would expect more representation. The whole time it was just “they speak in Bulgarian”, “he says something in Bulgarian”, etc. But hey, at least I got one word (the happiest I was while reading) and it was “nazdrave” (“cheers”) (which kinda feeds the stereotype that slavs are alcoholics💀)

The second thing, and what bothered me more, is the MMC’s name. One quick search in Google shows you that Armenian surnames mostly don’t change by gender but Bulgarian surnames do. That means it’s just offensive to give a MALE character the FEMALE family name suffix “-ova”. The right name would be Aleksi Petrov, not Petrova. And I assume the name isn’t Armenian because surnames from there have different mostly different suffixes and Petrov/a is a common surname in Bulgaria. So, it’s very disappointing that the author wanted to represent the culture but didn’t even research how the names work.

Now, onto the writing:
This whole book felt as if the author started writing it, stopped, and 1 month later continued without remembering what the last written part was about. It didn’t read like a complete story but random brainstormed ideas put together and called “a book”. One page something is happening and the next page it’s suddenly 3 months later in the story, mentioned as in “btw it’s been three months😁”, and you don’t even know where the plot is going. Therefore, the pacing of the story was so unnatural that I genuinely thought I missed 200 pages in between the book and just read the beginning and the ending. Mostly dialogue, absolutely no description that helps you get into the story. It was like you are reading Hegel. You understand the words but you can’t make sense of them together as a whole text. (saying this from experience)

The characters:

Aleksi Petrova:If I tell you this guy was idiotic, that would be an understatement. He was supposed to be grumpy, alpha male, but was just repulsive, toxic, bipolar, rude and disrespectful, and not in a “fear-me-im-a-badass” way but in a “im-so-insecure-i-yell-at-everyone” way. Absolutely no character development and his inner monologue DESTROYED my braincells. He constantly repeated how nothing can hurt him and he is the ultra mega untouchable mafia boss, and yet acted like a manchild not only with the FMC but also with his daughter. A hypocrite who criticised everyone for everything and then proceeds to do exactly what he got mad for. Oh, and when his daughter got her first period, he was so embarrassed he couldn’t even say the word “period”.

Sabrina Patterson: Meh…nothing special. Just as bipolar as her husband- one page she says how much she hates him and the next she “has always loved him”. Always crying and fainting, she grew a backbone after around the 75% mark and at least I could enjoy a few pages of her knocking some sense into her husband’s brain. She was also a lawyer but the only time she had to represent her husband she was so painfully unprofessional, her defence consisted of cursing at the police and threatening them because she was mafia material. Like husband, like wife, I guess.

Aleksi and Sabrina: High school lovers that were separated because he got her pregnant. Aleksi is ready to escape with Sabrina and raise their daughter together but she chooses to leave him and there is a mafia law that says she has to leave her child with him after she gives birth and move out of town. Aleksi is heartbroken and starts resenting her but raises their daughter with much love and care. We later find out that Sabrina left because her dad threatened her with an ab0rtion if she chooses to escape with Aleksi and she never tells her boyfriend the truth to protect her dad. Honestly, this was the most interesting part of the whole plot but at the same time just one big miscommunication. The book actually starts years later when Sabrina comes back to attend Aleksi’s wedding with her ex bff, Catherine, and the venue gets bombed. Aleksi’s dad dies, while Sabrina’s dad is in a coma and Aleksi thinks she is involved in the bombing so he kidnaps her. Turns out, there is a clause that says: if her dad dies in the coma she has to marry Aleksi, which was the stupidest plot point ever. The whole drama began because a clause forbid them from being together and suddenly they are obligated to marry? Am I stupid or does that just not make sense at all??
Anyway, and so their whole relationship throughout the book basically plays out: MMC is always telling the FMC to stand up for herself, to control her emotions and to “grow up” and when she does, he goes “who the fuck do you think you are to talk like that to me, you bitch😡😡”. Yells at her, criticises her and CHOKES her 24/7. Like 99% of the plot was this guy having a one sided beef with her. My girl was a victim. First half of the story he treated Sabrina like trash, tossing her around, cursing at her, put a literal tracker chip in her ankle?? We move past the 50% mark and suddenly he is so in love with her and starts worshiping her like a goddess??? The transition from love to hate was so badly written that there was no romance at all. Enemies to lovers, my ass.

And I just HAVE to mention my favourite scene: when Sabrina has a whole monologue about how Aleksi doesn’t treat her right, never tells her anything that goes on with him and how he can’t just “fuck her at night” but not respect her like a wife should be respected. I was so proud of her when she stood up for herself in that scene and guess what Mr. Mafia hears from the whole fucking confession? Ooga booga fucking, ooga booga night, ooga booga woman is not satisfied🧌🗿 and then his comment is: “So you want me to fuck you at lunch and morning too?😝”
….When I tell you I was so FLABBERGASTED and FUMING, I needed a few breaths. Somebody put this poor excuse of a male down, please.

Ella-Maria Petrova: This girl is not a criminal because she is a mafia heiress but because her name itself is a crime. Like father, like daughter, me thinks.
Ella-Maria is Aleksi and Sabrina’s 12 years old daughter. When I tell you, this girl was BABIED the WHOLE book. Everyone was treating her like she is 5 and she acted and spoke like she was, too. I’m pretty sure the author doesn’t know how to write children properly because that was just painful to read. How is an infantilization of a literal child even possible??? There was a quote somewhere in the book when she told Sabrina something among the lines “I don’t want to let go of your hand, it’s so warm and pretty, just like you🥺” WHAT THE HELL??? ARE WE JUST LEARNING TO PUT WORDS TOGETHER OR WHAT?? WHAT DOES THAT SENTENCE EVEN MEAN???

Catherine Kim: Sabrina’s ex best friend from high school and Aleksi’s supposed wife. ALSO a bipolar character. She was secretly in love with Aleksi her whole life and when she finally got him, Sabrina took him back. I would feel bad if she wasn’t a complete psycho. The funniest thing was when Cat and Sabrina had a reunion at Aleksi and Cat’s supposed wedding and Catherine was like “what is she doing here, is that bitch after my husband😠” and Sabrina literally thinks“wait I thought we just grew apart after graduation, I didn’t know she hates me☹️” LMAOOO. So once again, someone having a one sided beef with Sabrina. Then next page she goes “oh Nomi (Sabrina’s nickname) I’ve missed you so bad, I will help you escape😖💗” and then tries to kill her. Umm, Cat, bestie, so are we schizophrenic or just double-faced??? Till the end I didn’t understand. Throughout the book, Catherine was obsessing over Aleksi so bad and throwing herself at him at any given chance. Like, he would literally shoot her and beat the shit out of her and she would go “put a baby in me, Aleksi😢” (real quote) Absolutely no self respect. He then sends her to an asylum and tortures her, and she still pines over him. And guess what? She then proceeds to cheat on him and falsely accuses him of human trafficking. Make it make sense…?

Memorable mention for Aleksi’s nameless driver and his cousin Ophelia who were the only sane people in the whole book and actually said something smart to help the main characters resolve their miscommunication. My saviours.

And now, it’s time for y’all to witness certain truly
🥰UNFORGETTABLE🥰 quotes :

”You think another man’s cum inside you that hasn’t dried yet makes me less horny?” I chuckle. “It’s lubricant for you.”

“Come on, pussycat, I can’t do this with you.”

”right now, you’re practically a peace treaty. You’re less than a human and more of a thing. A possession. Something that Aleksi can say is his, but never really wants. This is what the clause is.”

“I’m tired of you treating me like a whore”
“What was that?” Aleksi asks.

“I need to learn Bulgarian, so I know what he’s saying every time he cums.”

“Happy Birthday to you,” I sing and stroking my hard cock.

“You know what I’m thinking about? How I’m so envious of our own child because I want to be buried inside you all the time, too.”

“Alright, let’s lubricate you and then I will examine you.” The gynecologist says, sitting on his stool. “Don’t worry, she doesn’t need to be further lubricated. I did my job.” Aleksi says.

“The only way he’s allowing me to take care of his wound is if I’m straddling him in nothing but my panties.”

And the end of the day, the most ironic part of all is how I’ve never written such structured review and yet the first time I do, it’s for the most atrocious book I’ve read in my life…being a hater really is a full-time job…👏

In conclusion, I suggest changing the name of the book to “The bipolar wannabe mafia boss, his bipolar family and Co.”🌈

Nevertheless, if you decide to read this, just know that this is NOT how Bulgarians are in real life and this book almost made me rethink my life choices…😊

I enjoyed the story very much in general. Aleksi was an asshole for most of the book, which was off putting to me personally but I know there are some who don't mind that in their alpha males. I related very much to Sabrina and thought her character deserved better treatment overall. It didn't seem to make her any stronger being treated so poorly by the man she loved. I think it would've been a 5 star if it didn't take Aleksi so long to be receptive of Sabrina's feelings and his own. By the time he had, it was too little too late for me. I wanted Catherine to suffer more for what she had done also and honestly thought her head was literally going to end up on a platter. It would have been amazing. The story was entertaining and I will definitely read more book from King Ellie.

I liked this book

I liked this book and the characters were good. However, Sabrina was portrayed as so weak for so long. Geez. Everything was tears and fainting..not impressed. When she finally started showing some spunk it’s at the end of the book. I loved Aleksi and Ella they were well developed characters.
I would suggest that the author’s editor do a better job with the editing. There were quite a few grammatical errors throughout the book.

Aleksi Petrova is a man who you may love or hate, but will respect. The boy who once wore his heart on his sleeve has grown into a gorgeous and ruthless man who is now bound by duty to his people. Sabrina is the girl who got away and when she returns she has no idea what she has walked into. But Aleksi is not that boy and this is no longer her town. The rules and games have changed and she has to prove her place to stake her claim.

Aleksi and Sabrina have a very intimate history combined with a bitter and tainted past. While Sabrina may still be the girl from long ago its clear that Aleksi is no longer that boy she once loved.
Sabrina's unexpected return after over a decade apart leaves a path of death, deception, and hidden secrets. There are many questions about Sabrina's intentions and why she has returned, and she knows who she must answer them to. The path they begin together is very dark while the sexual attraction they feel is as intense as their animosity and hate. They have a story like no other and its not all rainbows along the way. While love hath no fury like a woman scorned...you can only imagine when its a man.

I received an ARC read of Aleksi Petrova and I will say King Ellie never disappoints me with her books.

I loved Aleksi and Sabrina together and Ella was such a sweet soul. Aleksi tried to play hard but he knew he loved Sabrina. I am glad they got their HEA after so many things trying to keep them apart. Once Aleksi listened and understood what was really going on he was able to love Sabrina the way he needed too. That darn Catherine was something crazy off a short bus for sure. She got what she deserved and I was just reading this story like was it even worth it.

I love me some Aleksi and he has become one of my book bae’s. I can’t wait to see what King Ellie has in store for the next book.

Aleksi Aleksi! This was a really good read. You hear about a woman scorned but a man scorned is worse. Having to walk away from the love of his life because of rules was heartbreaking. The heart wants what it wants. Sabrina was put through the ringer! There were some twists and turns. Betrayal that I didn’t expect! Great read!

Nope

This book is a no for me, I get this was going to be a dark romance…but there was no romance or chemistry between him and her. I know he was a mobster dom but the way he talked to her was rough not tough. At times he spoke to her as if she was a little delayed and at times I thought she was too.

4.25 Stars. (BW/WM). Kindle Edition $5.99-236 page e-book.

Setting: The story has a contemporary feel but the location belies that, the north eastern hemisphere of New Dominion. There is no date given in the story telling.

Trope: Mafia romance. Second chance.

Characters:
1. Aleksi Josef Petrov, Bulgarian hero and Don of New Dominion.
2. Sabrina "Nomi/Brina" Patterson, heroine, is an attorney-at-law and high school sweetheart of Aleksi who later marries him.
3. Ella-Marie Petrov is the 12-year-old daughter of Aleksi and Sabrina.
4. & 5. Ana-Marie Petrov and Marco Gigoryan are Aleksi's deceased mother and murdered father.
6. Noah Patterson is Sabrina's father and enforcer for the Petrov Mafia Family.
7. Nicole Patterson is Sabrina's deceased mother
8. Catherine Mildred Kim is Aleksi's betroth and Sabrina's former best friend.
9. Evan Banks is Sabrina's companion and somewhat boyfriend.
10. Naomi Patterson is Sabrina's sister
11. Armani is Aleksi's close as a brother cousin.
12. Nikolla Cani the Albanian is one of Aleksi's rivals had sex with Catherine and now warns Aleksi about a plot against him by the Kim family.

This story is interesting with memorable characters. It is enjoyable and holds the reader's attention-a page turner; however, there are a few areas of concern: 1) The rules and regulations that govern the conduct of mafia families are vague and not thoroughly explained. 2) The character, Caterina, is spoken of three times by Nikolla in a conversation with Aleksi but there are no other references of this character...who is Caterina? 3) The story goes from then-when Aleksi and Sabrina were high schoolers to now-when they are adults with a daughter and where Aleksi is the Don. 4) This transition is often abrupt and gets confusing. 5) For the most part, the story is told from Aleksi and Sabrina's prospective with occasional points of view from Ella-Marie and Catherine. The story opens at the engagement party of Aleksi and Catherine where Aleksi's father is killed, Sabrina's father is seriously injured and Sebrina is injured and sees her 12-year-old daughter for the first time since giving birth. The story continues with Aleksi wreaking havoc on his dissectors to include Sabrina. Do to a mafia rule, Aleksi and Sabrina are forced to marry. After frothing his enemies scheme and killing Catherine, Aleksi and Sabrina and Ella-Marie happily await the arrival of a baby boy.

He was the ultimate alpha father

Aleksi was an extraordinary father. He was a don but he was also a single father deemed by syndicate business. It broke his heart and soul to lose the only young woman he ever loved but there was no choice. He wanted to fight to keep both his baby and the woman he loved. Sabrina left to save the lives of both of her loves. She was never to see either again but there was an underhanded plot by someone close to both of them that wanted Sabrina forever gone for no competition for Aleksi's heart. What this family did not know was there was never any chance of anyone winning Aleksi's heart. That already belonged to Sabrina and Ella-Marie.

People tried to destroy their relationship and family only to accomplish the opposite. Aleksi had a hard time letting Sabrina back in his heart because he was devastated by her leaving. But the heart wants what the heart wants. They all had to adjust to the new life they found themselves in, including Ella. She was such an intuitive little girl that was too smart for her age. Aleksi comes off as extremely hard and Sabrina was insistent on letting him know she did not abandon him. In the end, they all got their HEA.

The Don’s Duchesses💞💞💞

😎Don Aleksi Petrova is an alpha through and through and when it came to his loves Sabrina and Ella, he took it to a whole other level.  This was a highly intense second chance romance with the Don and the enforcers daughter🥰😍.

There were laws and clauses that prevented Aleksi and Sabrina to be together and when Sabrina made the hard choice to walk away from everyone she loved things changed for Aleksi😖.  The information about this law was very vague and thought the Don would have made changes to put him out of his misery but he had other plans.  It was sad what Sabrina had to endure from her own family and that of the Petrova’s but she was tough enough to endure it😢.  There were times when she appeared weak one too many times especially for someone who was trained to be otherwise.  I love the interactions between Aleksi and Ella🥰🥰.  What Catherine did was shameful, and she deserved what she got.

I like that this story is taking place in the New/Old Dominion world and looking forward to reading more👍🏽.

Just ok

The story was fine, however I just couldn’t deal with Sabrina’s constant crying. Get a grip. I also couldn’t understand, given how much she supposedly love her, how she wouldn’t do anything in her power to be
close to her daughter even if she didn’t know who she was.
It also took far too long for Sabrina to see and accept that she broke his heart. Her only excuse being young and vulnerable although so was he.
It was really frustrating that the boo kept going in circles about the Law without answering any questions. Why couldn’t they be together ? I understand that Aleksi got cold with his mother but not his dad, however I don’t know if I would have forgiven Sabrina ‘s dad. The moment he threatened her with abortion would have been the end, probably why she didn’t tell Aleksi.
I would have liked to know more about her life during these 12 years, it felt like a black hole while we know more about Aleksi’s life.
Ella was precious.

What a Ride!

This story was just…man!!! Aleksi is just one of those characters that you love and hate at different points in the story. How he treated Sabrina when she initially came back was pretty brutal, but once you understand his pain…you kind of get it. You don’t approve, but you get it. For me, it was something to see him try and fight his feelings.

Sabrina just got a raw deal. Despite how she was being treated, her feelings and love for Aleksi was just too strong. She was so (to me) very much a pushover, but you see her start to stand her ground as you get deeper in the book. Without giving too many spoilers, I like the fact that you really don’t know how this story is going to end. This was definitely a good read! I’m thinking that the remaining series will focus on the cousins of Aleksi because there were a lot of good supporting characters in this book.

Aleksi Petrova: The Bulgarian (In Crime & In Love Book 1)
King Ellie

I received an advanced reader copy, and I am voluntarily leaving a review. This is a second chance story of Aleksi and Nomi. They fell in love in high school but circumstances, family obligations and misunderstandings lead to their breakup. They reunite after 12 years and its fireworks, bloodshed and tears. Aleksi is alpha but is able to demonstrate love & compassion to “Little Duchess.” Nomi grew into her role as the woman who would stand with Aleksi as he rules. Aleksi grew into a man who could forgive and open his heart to love.

Good read

Aleksi hard to really say about him he has that bad boy vibe going on. He's mean to Sabrina but loves her like crazy even through he pretends he dont at first. Sabrina I Haye what they made her do that was so messed up that she had to give up her baby. She missed so many years of her life. That she didnt have a choice in the matter. I really first understand her best Friend she was crazy for real like why be so jealous and hateful 💔 toward Sabrina. She got what she deserved for what she did.

Aleksi Petrova

I had to read more into story because I was like WHAT…

The mention of the rules and what had to be followed…

Why were Don & Nomi the only ones that seemingly were punished…

Why did Nomi father allegedly want to disown her if she chose the Don & child…

Why was Nomi treated so harshly even by her sister…

Will the next book elaborate or will it be about Cani?

Will the next book uncover who was working with Catherine…

Many questions but the happily ever after was beautiful in spite of obstacles…

Modern & Juliet! The Syndicate dictated so much of their lives, kept them apart. What brought them back together was something neither of them could have possibly ever envisioned. Aleksi became the badass he was always meant to be. Sabrina had to learn who she really was meant to be. Together, The Syndicate is better. King Ellis did the damn thang with Aleksi's story. Definitely want more of this Syndicate.

Good book!

I did not understand the premise, but as I started reading, my heart went out to two kids that loved each other but could not be together because of crazy laws surrounding the "boss" world! Everything happens for a reason and these two finally found their happy after being away from each other too long! I completely loved this book and look forward to more from Ms. Ellie!

I was a little worried in the beginning because of all the typos, but once I focused on the storyline and figured out the wording I was hooked. I needed to know what was happening and how it was going to end. Still curious about what happened to their mothers. Was kind of up in arms about aleksi at first, but once I knew why he was like that and the fact that Sabrina liked that about him, I was good. You like what you like.

Engaging!

The story captured my attention from the very beginning. I was reminded of advice from an elder, don't discuss your love life with your so-called friends. They will use it to disrupt your life. With all the turmoil and deceit, it was satisfying to know that evil did not win. A satisfying read.

Aleski and his Duchess

They were childhood sweethearts but it was forbidden because of the code. She had to give up their love child and leave. His heart grew cold and bitter. He blamed his Duchess for his broken heart. Fate has a way of changing life's circumstances. Can they find the love that they once had? A great read!

I like this author, but I seriously have to wonder about the research they put into this… as far as I know, but correct me if I’m wrong, but slavic surnames agree with gender. So Aleksi would be a Petrov unless he’s a she. Then Aleksandra “Aleksi” Petrova. I know it’s a little nitpicky of me, but this really throws me off.

Just read it

I was caught off guard this book takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions..
Sabrina and Aleksi gave up everything for love and once that love was taken away he became a hardcore dangerous dominant Don Petrov..
His only love was Ella his child with the Duchess..
He is a man not to be crossed…Sabrina is not as timid as people think..
Just read it a great book.
