A boyfriend who’s missing. Or was. . . Or is. . . A boat full of old bones. A community ice cream social. A friend in trouble, a spiteful witch, and an angry villain. The mysteries and fun abound in Destiny Falls. Hayden, Latifa, and their family and friends are up for the excitement and adventure.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones follows the series format of combining two stories that blend into one. A murder mystery and the island mystery.
The Island Mystery: Hayden’s boyfriend Han is missing. But she swears she saw him zoom by in his car. She’d thought it was a surprise, and that he was home early from his secret service case. She was wrong. The surprise is that his signal isn’t pinging, and no one knows where he is. There appears to be black magic behind his disappearance. Can they learn who’s responsible and bring Han safely home?
The Murder Mystery: A pile of old bones is found in an ancient fishing boat. They could be tied to the disappearance of two young women years ago, back when many of the Destiny Falls people where in high school. Many of the citizens had bad history with the students. Do the bones belong to them, and what happened? Were they murdered? And could the murderer be living among them?
Hayden and Latifa’s many adventures in Destiny Falls will keep you guessing with each book in this fun and intriguing series.

Clever. It’ll keep you on your toes until the final pages.” ~ Pages & Paws “Just when I think the series cannot get any better, it does. It's absolutely magical! I could not put this book down!” ~ Goodreads

She writes two well-loved cozy mystery series: The Magical Mystery Book Club, and the Destiny Falls Mystery and Magic series. She has also written the international bestselling No-Cry Solution parenting book series that is available in over twenty languages.

Welcome back to Destiny Falls. This magical town is full of wonderment and you get to try and solve two mysteries while enjoying some ice cream and other treats in the process...or at least enjoy reading about them.
Hayden is settling into her role as a conduit on this island. She has a strong family circle around her and a handsome boyfriend. However, nothing is ever easy and there is always mischief from Nemmy or the likes. She doesn't let that get her down and forges on; but as she learns from Gasper and others, she must have patience and not jump the gun on everything.
I enjoy so many different things about Destiny Falls from the library with the different themes, Vessie's cafe, the interactions of the family and friends, and how the mysteries are cloaked and while you might have some of the pieces you don't have them all. And we can't forget the SCS - Secret Cat Society. This is made up of all the cats and Cleobella and now Bob the olm. They tend to go off on wild tangents that I would expect from a cat. The humor sprinkled throughout adds to my enjoyment of this book and series.
I also enjoy watching the characters come into their own. They continue to grow a little more with each book and add additional layers to their personalities. I don't know if I have a favorite character yet even though this is the 6th book. Each one is endearing in their own way.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones is the latest book in the Destiny Falls Mystery and Magic Series. If you haven’t read the prior books in this series, you may not want to read this review as there are potential spoilers for the books prior to this one. Each book contains its own mystery which is solved in that book, but if you want to understand the characters and what’s going on in general, you need to start with the first book.
Destiny Falls is still as charming and magical as ever. It’s a town where any of us would love to stay. If you’re a book lover, you’d be enchanted by the library and its ever changing themes. Hayden Caldwell fell into this magical place when her cat disappeared into a mirror, and since that day, she’s fallen further in love with her Destiny Falls family and friends.
One of those particular friends has become more than a friend, but Han is missing…and then he’s not. He’s back, but he’s changed. He’s still the same old Han, but his appearance isn’t quite right. When Hayden and her “crew” discover this, they immediately know that black magic must be behind this. Hayden uses the resources available to her at her newspaper office, and the special room at the library where just the right books always show up for her. Her ghost friend, Gaspar, always shows up when she needs info from him too. His help comes in the form of stories which frustrates Hayden. However, she always ends up with what she needs to know.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones is another charming installment in the series which propels the story nearer its conclusion. The series is easy to read, has well-written characters, a magical setting, and an exciting mystery flowing throughout. I think that cozy mystery lovers of all ages will enjoy this delightful series.
This is the 6th book in the Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic series. They get better with each story. You have two mysteries intertwined so smoothly that it's really fun to try and figure out. Mystery one: While on a hike, Hayden and Han come across a boat that has parts of a skeleton in it that has been there for a very long time. It winds up it's been there for over three decades now. With the years past and scavengers taking their prizes. Jax has a cold case to solve with only a partial skeleton, and very few clues left to try and solve it.
Mystery two: Something weird is going on with Han. He keeps disappearing. Literally, one minute he's there, the next he's not. Gaspar has some clues to give Hayden, but with the bonds of sharing information. All he can do is give Hayden clues to try and figure out. All she knows is it involves dark magic and she is the key to ending the curse that has been put on Han, and she only has one lunar cycle to figure it out or she loses Han forever.
This is a really fun story with developed characters and a strong plotline that will keep you guessing for most of the story.
Hayden lives in Destiny Falls, a magical place full of witches and other supernatural creatures. She is in love with Han Chow, who works for special forces. But he has been gone for longer than a week, and she is worried. When he returns unexpectedly, with no knowledge of ever being missing, he is different: taller, stronger, more virile. The residents of the town are worried, but Han shrugs it off.
When Han and Hayden go on a picnic, they find the bones of a human that have been there for decades. But who was this person? Discovering the bones were female, they at least have a lead, considering there was no head with the body, so it takes them awhile to find out who the person was -- and how they came to be there.
But the spell cast upon Han is strong; and it will take Hayden and all her magical friends to attempt to bring back her beloved, if it is possible to do so at all...
This is the sixth book in the series, and I must admit that I have not read any of the others. Since this is the latest book, I will admit that I have missed the introduction to many of the characters, but the book can be read as a standalone, so I had no problem catching up.
What I didn't care for was the huge cache of characters involved. There were so many, and all so different, that I was having trouble deciding who was important and who was not; and why some of them were even in the book. Unfortunately, this is a negative for me.
But the story line was done well, and the writing was very good, so that is a big positive in itself. Part of the book seemed to be slow, but in the the rest of the book, it was enough to keep me interested in finding out the two answers. While neither one connected to the other, it really didn't matter; both, as we know, will be solved before the end of the book, and they were done so, and very well.
As far as paranormal books go, this one was very good. Ms. Pantley is a talented author and one I would recommend to others.
This book was given to me by the Cozy Review to read and review but this in no way influenced what I have written.

Whoo hoo! Aaaand we're back!! Filled with magic, feline sass, delicious food that don't let you gain an ounce and of course the satisfaction of knowing there's more to come.
You've guessed it! We've just returned from Destiny Falls for a visit with Queen Latifa, Hayden, Han that pulled an on-again-off-again stud, I mean stunt, and the rest of the Caldwell family and crew.
True to form, the magical author-wizard (calling her a witch doesn't sound or feel right at all), Elizabeth Pantley, continued her series by simply jumping to the next sentence.
Poor Hayden was of course heartbroken and by now, we also know that hiking, yoga and the menagerie of awesome cats who all reside in the Caldwell House, are what helps her cope with the stress one can actually experience in a magical town that resembles Camelot or a Hallmark-style community, in numerous ways. (Of course I know Camelot, I've learned from Caldwell cats to watch all the classic movies).
While going on a romantic picnic/hike with Han the stud/stunt, they stumble upon a set of old bones in an even older fishing boat. Who can it be? Did the bone-inhabitant die of natural causes, or does our local amateur sleuth need to solve yet another murder? You can guess the answer to that question for yourself. As the local editor, journalist, and photographer of the Observer, Hayden of course jumps into the latest murder mystery with the vigor and determination that will make Jessica Fletcher blush. And all of that while trying to solve the stud/stunt Han situation as well.
Our my Mommy's definite highlight of Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones was that we got the opportunity to use our own magical library, aka Google. Gaspar told Hayden a tall tale that was actually true and Googleable. Han's disappearing/reappearing act isn't island bound and searching for Gaspar's tale on Marvin Clark, was quite interesting.
My favorite part of course was the Nifty 1950 Rock & Roll Party. This hip cat had loads of fun and I am still trying to convince my Mommy to please, please watch Grease with me again.
As always, we loved the latest instalment and enjoyed every minute submerged in our book. It really does only get better and better and the author-wizard Elizabeth Pantley keeps on adding things to keep us entertained and sending the series in various different directions. Although we aren't left with another cliff-hanger mid-sentence ending, we eager await the next instalment and can't wait for our next ferry ticket to Destiny Falls!

Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones is the sixth book in the Destiny Falls series and I always enjoy returning to this series. It's such a fun and magical series and I enjoyed this read. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book as much as some of the others.
In Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones there are two main plot lines. First there are the old bones Hayden discovers and they have to figure out who they belong to and what happened. Then there is Hayden's boyfriend Han who disappeared and there seems to be black magic involved. And there is another festival in the plans, this time a 50s themed ice cream social.
So there's plenty going on, but for some reason the book felt kinda slow at times. Most of the plot lines come to the conclusion late in the book and I felt like especially some chapters in the middle were a lot of waiting, although there were things going on the plot liens progressed, but it still felt like Hayden just had to wait for things to come together. I didn't like how we basically know the outcome and how Hayden just has to wait for things to come together as it didn't feel as active as tense this way. Hayden is also pretty stressed with everything going on and I felt it made the book less enjoyable and not as relaxing as some of the previous books.
The old bones murder mystery didn't fully work for me. I missed the tie to the present and how this was relevant now. I also felt Hayden wasn't as involved in figuring things out and she mostly had to wait for the sheriff to figure things out, luckily she is kept in the loop and can contribute some things. I was a bit annoyed when she jumped to conclusions about who had done it. She just seemed a bit too convinced while usually she's more nuanced about it.
I liked seeing everything come together at the end, I was pleasantly surprised by the murder mystery reveal as it all fell on it's place. It also was nice to see the ice cream social take place, although I felt the festival in book 5 was more fun. The wrap up of the dark magic mystery surrounding Han felt a bit rushed to me. After al the build up it just felt almost too easy how it all played out, but it was nice seeing all the plans play out
My favorite part of this book was spending some time again int his magical world and reading about all the characters I've grown to know over the course of the series. I think the author does a great job handling so many different characters and giving all of them screen time and their own personality. I also liked seeing Han and Hayden together and seeing how deep their feelings have become. The magical feel of the island is great too.
To summarize: This was another solid read in this series, although for me this one was a bit less good than some of the other books. There's plenty going on with a mystery surrounding some old bones, Hayden's boyfriend who disappeared with black magic involved and an upcoming ice cream festival. The old bones mystery didn't grip me as much as I missed the tie to the present and there was a lot of waiting involved for Hayden. I liked how she could help at times, but didn't like how she jumped to conclusions. I liked how the mystery got resolved and wrapped up. The mystery surrounding Hayden's boyfriend progressed steadily, but there was a lot of waiting for things to get in their place and it felt a bit slow. I thought the wrap up for it was a bit rushed after all the build up, but I liked seeing how everything played out. It was fun to return to this magical world and spend time with all the familiar characters. I look forward to the next book.
Life is full of surprises and mysteries in Hayden Caldwell’s new home in Destiny Falls. First, her handsome boyfriend, Han, disappears and she is sure it has something to do with black magic. Then, some old bones are found on a fishing boat. It appears it might have something to do with two young women who disappeared when they were in high school many years ago.
Hayden does double duty as she researches her boyfriend’s disappearance as well as the boat full of old bones, but that's the life of a journalist. Hayden’s friends and family join in on the search, but things are starting to feel hopeless for Hayden. When she starts uncovering some of the town’s dark secrets, she fears where this will all lead her. Not to mention that she's scared to death for the safety of Han.
This is book #6 in the Destiny Falls series. I don’t know how the author does it, but each book gets better and better. This series is such a delight to read. It keeps you at the edge-of-your seat for the entire book. I recommend reading this series from the beginning. Although the case of the old bones is solved in this book, there is a continuing thread throughout the series. To truly appreciate this series, I think you have to start with book #1.
It’s so much fun to take this journey with Hayden from her start in Seattle to the magical land of Destiny Falls. I always manage to race through these books. I practically devour them. They are filled with charm, mystery, romance and magic. I can't get enough of it.
Hayden has her own personal sidekick in her kitty Latifa. Latifa can be so snarky and adds so much humor to the story. She is, also, a great little investigator in her own right. Latifa is my favorite character, but that's because I'm a cat lover. I think even non-cat lovers will get a kick out of her antics.
I’m so looking forward to the next book in the series. I hope there will be another one as I really need to visit with Hayden, Latifa and their family. They’ve become old friends.
On a side note: The entire series has beautiful covers. Really sharp and adorable.
A wonderful, heartwarming series that I can’t get enough of.

In Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones by Elizabeth Pantley, the adventures continue for Hayden Caldwell on the enchanted island of Destiny Falls. Hayden is drawn into two mysteries that come under the purview of the local sheriff and a select group of townspeople. One mystery involves her boyfriend, Han Chow, and the second one involves the discovery of human bones. Hayden finds herself perplexed as to why Han has undergone a surprising body transformation and keeps disappearing and reappearing. Hayden also is intrigued as to the identity of the bones, which could belong to someone who vanished without a trace a few decades ago. Will the baffling secret of what is happening to Han be resolved? Will the skeletal remains be identified, and did the person die of foul play or in some other manner?
This highly enjoyable mystery includes black magic versus white magic, protection spells, supernatural beings, amateur sleuthing, camaraderie among family and friends, cats with telepathic abilities, fun activities, a psychic reading, a strong emotional connection in a relationship, enchantments of buildings and objects, supportive relationships, and perseverance in the face of challenging circumstances.
Pantley has done a great job of writing descriptions that pull readers into the magical world of Destiny Falls. Hayden continues to develop and grow as a character, and she reacts in believable ways to unpredictable twists and turns in her life. The supporting characters add a compelling backdrop to Hayden’s story arc.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones is the sixth book in the Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic series. It can be read as a stand-alone. However, reading the first five books will shed more light on past adventures that have led Hayden to this time in her life. Pantley has done a wonderful job of writing an appealing series that takes people into a world of magical realism. There are some proofreading errors in the book. However, it does not take away from the overall reading experience of a story that grabs readers’ attention at the beginning and keeps them invested in what happens all the way through to the end.
Intriguing, entertaining and enjoyable! The Destiny Falls series is such a wonderful place to escape to and see what Hayden and her friends are up to. Hayden’s life is continually full of adventure since she has arrived and discover she had family she didn’t know about. This latest book in the series focuses on two mysteries; the discovery of a boat of old bones and the disappearance and reappearance of her boyfriend. With a strong plot line, interesting & well-developed characters, and very descriptive writing, Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones is a cozy mystery at its best! I’m enjoying Hayden’s and Han’s relationship progressing and all the friendships Hayden is making. This is an ongoing series which I eagerly await each new release. You need to start at book one to get the full background and to enjoy the series. Full of wonderful characters, mystery, humor, and a mischievous cat. It’s an adventurous mystery series written with cleaver imagination.
The island of Destiny Falls is filled with magic and mystery. Hayden knows to expect the unexpected but she's frightened by her boyfriend's disappearance and reappearance. She learns that he's under a spell cast by the evil Lazarus. Han is being trained to be a super soldier. Hayden has to save him. That is her quest. I couldn't wait to see how she will accomplish this. I had confidence in her. She's resourceful and smart and she has family and friends who have her back. However there is more going on. A relaxing picnic with Han turns into a cold case murder. They find old human bones hidden in a boat. Unfortunately they don't know who the victim is. Hayden has help from Latifa and the Secret Cat Society to find who the victim was. Poor Hayden! She's struggling. She understands that she needs to be patient, but that's very difficult. I always enjoyed this magical mystery series. The characters are interesting and unique. These stories are filled with nonstop action plus there is always a surprise twist waiting to shock you. Elizabeth Pantley has a great imagination and a wonderful writing style. I never know what's going to happen. I'm looking forward to more of Hayden's adventures.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones was my first foray into the books by Elizabeth Pantley. And, while reading books 1-5 was not required and personal issues did not allow me to read them ... I do believe that having read them would have provided a, if not better, a smoother insight into the world described in Old Bones ... It would also have explained the relationship between the heroine, Hayden, and "Han" more quickly but again, nothing insurmountable. The magic element is strong and, in fact, could be considered central to the story. That having been said, the magic element works for the most part ... although the transfiguration of human to another type of animal, monster, fairy was sometimes disconcerting.
I prefer books written in the first person and this book was much the better for utilizing the first person device. In addition, the heroine of the story was faced with not one but two mysteries so ... if one doesn't entice you, the other surely will. And it did. I particularly enjoyed the way that the heroine conducted her research ... methodically and thoroughly. In the matter of the first mystery ... the old bones ... it was fascinating to learn how anyone could discern the age, the sex, and then the method by which the victim was killed.
As for the 2nd mystery ... the changes to Han ... well, the less that I give away the better. But you will not be disappointed because the explanation makes perfect and non-magical sense.
I did receive an electronic copy of the book in order to review it appropriately but it in no way influenced my opinion of the book.
Hayden is at it again. She is trying to figure out what is going on with her boyfriend Hans and trying to figure out another murder.
Hayden is getting settled in at Destiny Falls. She and her cat Latifa along with the Secret Cat Society are trying to figure out who the old bones that were found belong to. They have to find out what happened and why. She also need to find out what is going on with her boyfriend. It seems as some type of spell is on him and it is up to her to get it all sorted out.
I really enjoy this series and look forward to the next adventure.
This book was so much fun! I think it is the best one in the series so far.
Han disappears but then turns up again. Hayden and Han grow closer, but can they overcome the dark magic trying to keep them apart? Two mysteries to solve - a cold case involving old bones found in a boat and Han’s disappearance. I was kept guessing until the very end.
Latifa is even sassier than usual; she makes me laugh out loud. And little Lola is adorable. I love the Secret Cat Society. I got to know Hayden’s friends better as there were lots of fun scenes with them preparing for the ice cream social. I loved the frequent appearances of Bob the olm.
Creative and fun, I look forward to each new book in this series.
I received an Advance Review Copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Destiny Falls is a magical place. Hayden is working as the editor of the town paper and enjoys spending time with her friends, cats and boyfriend Han. When Han starts disappearing, then coming back as a better version of himself, Hayden begins to look into what is causing that. Additionally, her and Han come across a body that looks as if its been there for years. With the help of her 'special' friends, she looks to uncover the secrets that lie hidden. Add in an old-fashioned ice cream social and you have a very light, fun mystery.
Hayden’s boyfriend Han keeps disappearing and has no memories during the time he is missing. He’s not only disappearing but his appearance has changed. Hayden is sure this is the result of magic but who’s behind this and why.
This book picked up where book 5 left off. Oh Boy! I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I was hooked from page one. I’d have to say for me this book has been the best in the series so far. There are actually two mysteries that Hayden and her friends are trying to solve. First one is a cold case for some old remains Hayden finds while hiking. The second being where Han is when he’s missing and why. There isn’t a shortage of surprises for either mystery. The characters keep getting stronger and have developed great relationships since book 1. I recommend reading these books in order. This is a great series for paranormal cozy mystery fans.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Another fun adventure to a great magical cozy mystery series. Like past installments we get two mysteries at the same time. First Han is missing under mysterious circumstances making it necessary for Hayden to look into things. At the same time a pile of bones is found that are several years old that could be tied to a past disappearance. The two combine into a well paced mystery read full of magic, surprises, and more as we follow our face characters. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
This delightfully entertaining series continues to get better with unforgettable characters, the magic of Destiny Falls and two mysteries that kept me glued to the book from start to finish. I just love Hayden and enjoy her dynamic with her friends and family as they try to figure out why her boyfriend keeps vanishing and what happened with the old bones that showed up in a fishing boat. If you enjoy excitement and adventure that's fun and intriguing, don't miss Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones. I received an advance reader copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This series gets better and better. The author really stepped up her game with this addition to the series. The writing was fuller, the mysteries were intriguing, and in between she gave us funny moments that made you laugh out loud.
Some of my favorite parts: The Secret Cat Society. I just love that Hayden can communicate with her cats and that they help her to solve what ever mystery is going on. The Knitting Group….these senior citizens are so much fun, and who can’t use the advice of someone with experience in their life. The 1950s Ice Cream Social. What fun and laughter as the gang all settled on their costumes, and Hayden and Han’s were spot on. The reader will feel like they are right there laughing, dancing, eating and gossiping.
I can’t wait to see what the author gives us next. She’s got quite the challenge to surpass this story.
My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions expressed are my own.
Hayden has her most baffling and dangerous mystery yet. And if that is not enough she has a cold case to solve as well. Her support group is a strong as ever, which Hayden needs because the stakes are getting higher. I really enjoy the way Ms. Pantely develops her characters and how they all keep growing. Even the SCS keeps growing. Destiny Falls is the perfect blend of quirky and magical small town to the perfect destination for everyone looking to escape their reality.
There is something hinky going on in Destiny Falls. Hans has disappeared for a while on a mission. When he returns, he was himself, only improved. Now he has disappeared again while diving in the lake looking for possible answers for the old bones found in an old boat. Gaspar has told Hayden she needs to save Hans from the curse before it takes full effect on him. Have has three weeks to solve this puzzle or Hans will be lost forever. Can she do it? I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I have read all 6 books and I loved them all! Each book kept me interested and wondering what would happen next. The writing was excellent and the characters were developed over time and were extremely interesting. I highly recommend the whole series.
I loved this book so much. The title drew me in because of the fun rhyming and it made me wonder what could happen. The characters are so loveable and I wanted to be there with them throughout the entire book, but especially at the party. It sounded like so much fun. I world have loved to see Hayden and Han's costumes. I cannot wait for the 7th book to see what trouble Hayden and the crew get into next.
In Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones, Han has disappeared, but then he is back, gone, returned . . . There are more strange happenings in Destiny Falls. I am not usually this charmed by alternate worlds, but I love this series! Hayden and Han, on a picnic, find an old fishing boat with old bones inside. Hayden's patience and perseverance will be sorely tested in this well written adventure. Some good things happen to bring this book to its surprising conclusion. It is hard to wait for the next book!
I have recommended this series to several of my cozy mystery friends and family. I adore all the characters in the story. The descriptions are vivid and easy to "see" in your head. One of the few books I can get lost. I read this one from beginning to end in one day!
I am never disappointed when I open one of the books in the Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic series by Elizabeth Pantley.....and neither will you.
The Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic series follows main character Hayden Caldwell and her adorable cat Latifa after they mysteriously fall through a magical mirror. They were living in Seattle with her grandmother and great-grandmother and she had a nice job working with her best friend. However, all that changed one day when she was looking through her mirror and it ended up pulling her through to Destiny Falls where she had a whole other family she didn't know she had. Yes she knew she had an older brother and her father but thought that they had abandoned her.....but after falling through the mirror she learns that her father and brother were pulled back by the family magic. In Destiny Falls Hayden reunites with her father and brother and is introduced to her grandparents, half-sisters, half-brother and a whole new life !! Unfortunately one other main factor in this series is that murder is always nearby and Hayden always gets in the middle of it.
In Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones, the sixth book in the series, Hayden and her boyfriend are on a hike when they come across a boat with old bones in it. It is learned that the bones are over 30 years old and this sets Hayden on a research mission to solve the mystery. Unfortunately this is not the only mystery that Hayden has to worry about. Her boyfriend Han mysteriously vanishes and when he returns, he is bigger and sexier and has no recollection as to where he was or for how long. They soon learn that he is being pulled to the dark island, Gladstone, and Hayden has to obtain a magic potion and she has to travel to Gladstone to give to Han to drink......easy peasy.
Readers will instantly get drawn into this series and never want to leave !! Reading this series you will be whisked away to this magical town of Destiny Falls and as you read, the town and everything in it will open your imagination wide open !! Sooo happy to hear this next book arrived! I was lonely not only for the wonder and excitement, but also the lovely being swept away from my mundane, average, everyday life to the outrageously intriguing island of Destiny Falls, my very favorite vacation location now of all time!
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones swiftly dumped me right into new mysterious happenings, almost from the very first page. No coddling and easing into leading up to it, Elizabeth Pantley is confident she’s prepared us readers to handle the new issues right off the bat!
So once again, I was off on a vacation to Destiny Falls, hanging out with Hayden, her family and friends, a few enemies, and the enchanting kitties, an olm and a bear, and a dog the size of a small bear! The action and experiences are almost immediate onset, deeper delving into revealing the magical and mysterious people, places, and events there, letting us get to know the complicated wonderful people more familiarly, and see the incredible secrets and capabilities of the buildings and natural aspects like lakes, woods, and mountains plus a somewhat creepy cave and its inhabitants.
Join Hayden as Elizabeth Pantley carries both of you into encountering touches of evil, blossoming romances, mysteries and crimes to solve, and history to unravel, all the while with her expert descriptive and incredibly imaginative writing skill, placing you right smack in the action - you are there, living in Destiny Falls for the journey.
We get to know some of Hayden’s friends and family more deeply, discovering additional aspects of their wondrous skills and abilities, or revealing evil aspects as well, maybe even finding a bit of good deep inside an evil one! Once again, I was THERE, thanks to Elizabeth’s expertly descriptive tale weaving, to share in the surprises, joys, mysteries, crimes, and spells firsthand. Get on the ferry to Destiny Falls; the books are your ticket to a whole new world. DON’T miss this grand adventure; read every one of them. Now, I wait for the next one…
On wow! Another entertaining and enjoyable adventure in the magical world of Destiny Falls. This author has such a vivid imagination and a wonderful talent of being about to put what she sees down onto paper (or a screen) so others can join her. And best of all she backs it up with a good mystery and lots of intrigue. This is book six and each book contains two mysteries, one that gets solved nicely and a big longer running mystery about the island, that we learn a little bit more about with additional book. So from that point of view I would start with book one and work my way through the whole series, in my opinion you won't be disappointed. This book also continues from where the last book left off, with the main character finding out her boyfriend is missing. Then the story is off and running. Both mysteries in this book was good and nicely woven together to give one big adventure, that keeps you guessing. The characters are absolutely delightful and despite solving a murder and finding a missing boyfriend, they still find time to dress up and have fun, not forgetting the SCS (the Secret Car Society) that like to dress up and help solve the case, too. Well it is a magical book from every point of view. With Hayden's boyfriend missing, she and his sister start looking for clues about his whereabouts and his secret assignment, only for him to turn up like nothing is wrong but something is wrong he is different. Is black magic at work? And if so who is responsible? And more importantly why? Hayden doesn't what to let him out of her site and the pair goes for a romantic picnic only to discover bones in an old rowing boat. Identifying the body proves difficult and Hayden as editor of Destiny Falls newspaper will have to use all her skills as a researcher and contacts if she wants to find the name that goes with the bones and possible find the killer. Then the unthinkable happens and Hans goes missing again. Can Hayden and her friends save her boyfriend as well as solve the cold case? Time will tell, if she has enough patience. I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
OLD BONES AND ICE CREAM CONES by Elizabeth Pantley The Sixth Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic Book
Concern over her missing boyfriend, Han, leads to shock when he reappears looking differently. His appearance has been enhanced and he has no memory of his missing time. As a conduit to the magic in Destiny Falls Hayden is certain that dark magic is involved. While she, along with her family and friends, attempt to get to the bottom of his transformation they happen upon another mystery. Hayden and Han discover human remains in an old boat. The skeleton has no head so identification will be challenging. Do these old bones have anything to do with Gladstone Island or Han’s mysterious disappearance? Is Han in even more danger? Will Hayden be able to save him?
Destiny Falls is an amazing place and I love every minute I spend on this enchanted island. I love seeing more of Bob and the fact that he slowly getting through to Nessie. Meanwhile, the new villain is becoming even more villainous! I adore the cats and love how eager they are to get involved. I can still see the members of the SCS club dancing around and getting even more involved in investigating the mystery. Baby Lola is so sweet and I am curious to see her personality develop as she grows up. The humans are pretty wonderful too and the love they so freely share is wonderful to see, especially as today's real world is more reminiscent of Gladstone Island.
As with all the books in the series there are two mysteries-one specific to the current book and the other, the overlapping mystery encompassing all of Destiny Falls. I had my suspicions about a few Destiny Falls residents and learned even more secrets, but the conclusion was a jaw dropping spectacle. As for the overlapping mystery, I love how it cements Hayden's relationship with Han and especially how it's her destiny to rescue him. Destiny Falls and Gladstone Island are slowly revealing their secrets as we get to know more about their residents, but I know there will always be more surprises around the bend.
OLD BONES AND ICE CREAM CONES is a feel good adventure. There's drama, mystery, and plenty of laughs that had me captivated from the start and eager for the next installment.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones by Elizabeth Pantley is the 6th book in her fun Destiny Falls Mystery and Magic series. Refresher: Hayden, who now fully lives in Destiny Falls with her talking cat, Latifa, and is happy in her new magical world, being a member of her powerful Caldwell family, as well as many new friends, and boyfriend, Han.
Hayden’s boyfriend, Han is missing at the start, and she calls in her friends to help find him; he suddenly reappears, not remembering where he had been. Hayden and family recognize that Han’s disappearance was the work of black magic, especially with his appearance having changed, making him stronger and built. When Han continues to disappear and reappear, Hayden learns he has been cursed by the evil Lazarus, and she must find a way to save Han.
There is another mystery that revolves around a pile of old bones found on an ancient boat. During the investigation, it is confirmed that it ties to the disappearance of two young girls thirty years ago. Hayden is in the middle of both investigations, as she uncovers dark secrets of the past, as well as her friends and family helping support her in finding how to pull Han from control of the evil Lazarus; she learns what is necessary from both Gasper and Bob (the Olm).
Hayden and her brother Axel have settled into their role of being conduits on Destiny Falls. I love Hayden’s wonderful family and friends who are always there for her, and of course our wonderful Latifa (her cat) and the Secret Cat Society. It is always fun to watch and listen to the cats, Latifa, Chanel, Marshmellow and Lola. Cute.
Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones was another delightful lighthearted mystery, in the magical and charming enchanted realm, Destiny Falls. This is a fun cozy murder fantasy whodunit, that was intriguing and kept our attention from start to finish. The characters are all interesting and unique, especially the cats who help solve the crimes. I look forward to the next book by Elizabeth Pantley, that is always fun to read.
I’ve been enjoying this cosy mystery/magic adventure with Hayden and her talking cat Latifah, in the mysterious and magical Destiny Falls, but unfortunately this book was not my favourite in the series.
This was due to three main reasons: 1) I found Hayden’s bemused delight at her boyfriend’s physical transformation into a ‘hunkier’ version of himself a bit shallow and was offended on his behalf (although he seemed fine with it!); 2) Han popping constantly in and out of existence quickly became repetitive and I struggled to see the point of it – I would have felt more tension if he had stayed missing, giving his friends and family chance to worry about him; and 3) in a similar vein, Hayden’s ‘vision’ at the beginning of the story took away any remaining narrative tension, as we already knew what the eventual outcome of events would be.
All of these niggles related to the Island Mystery element of the plot; the Murder Mystery side of the plot worked well and kept me guessing. And I still really love the magical islands and sentient house, and unique characters like Bear and Cleobella; the cats are sweet and funny, and the library is amazing – I really want to visit it! All of the ingredients are here for a fun, light-hearted fantasy read, with some murder, some romance… a bit of everything really. This particular book just didn’t quite hit the mark for me the way others in the series did.
I do definitely recommend reading these in series order (this is no. 6), as there is an overarching plot to follow throughout, and I do think the series makes a nice introduction for younger, newer or slightly cautious readers coming fresh to the murder mystery genre, as nothing is too graphic and the tone is kept mostly warm and family-friendly.
