What would make you betray your family of deadly assassins?

Nadia Navarra, half-werewolf and a young member of the Queen’s Wraiths, knows this monster all too well. Lying low, she has tried to sever every connection to this beast.
When the creature reappears, crazed and tormented from his transformation into a monster, Nadia’s loyalties to the Wraiths are tested. Especially when someone closer to her than either her connection to the past or the Wraiths needs her help.
Facing an impossible choice, Nadia is desperate to do the right thing for those who need her the most. But that means embarking on a life where she must continually balance lies…
Silver Dust is a dark urban fantasy novelette of 20K words. It is also a starting point to the Queen’s Wraith series, but can be read as a standalone story.
This is off to a fantastic start! This well written dark, urban fantasy is a look into the Queen’s Wraith world which is amazing and addictive and I couldn’t put this down. It’s an exciting beginning and I cannot wait to read more.
This book is part of the Queen’s Wraith series and the main character is Nadia Navarra, one of the Queen’s Wraiths in the subterranean city of Agartha. She is a half werewolf, half human hybrid and joined the Wraiths at age twelve to be trained to keep the city safe from the monsters who roam it and the Shade on the outskirts of the city. She is currently a Bolt, an apprentice and one of the lower levels of Wraith, but trained enough to be let out of the Cube, the dwelling all Wraiths live in, and now at seventeen, be given her own sword. She is close to becoming a Shield Wraith like her friend Atherton, when she will be no longer be classed an apprentice, but a Wraith in her own right. She hasn’t been well recently, but it isn’t down to the lich fever that seems to have been befalling a large number of them, and is trying to hide her utter fatigue and ill health from others. She can’t have anyone question why she isn’t well and make her stay in the Cube, as she has an important reason to go out and soon! All of the Wraiths are called to the meeting area in the Cube, to be told they are all to go on patrol to stop an abomination called Trecandis, a werewolf, human who had been turned by a vampire and now all three entities have been fighting for control of the boy’s body and sending him mad. He is responsible for lots of recent brutal killings around the city and he needs to be stopped. The boy has been identified as Darrow Reagan, from Cahlmont Hollow, the same area Nadia grew up in, and she knew him very well indeed, before concentrating on becoming a full Wraith. Wraiths value loyalty above all else and they do not have permanent relationships, concentrating on the work they do for the queen and the people. They do not have families or children. She is now breaking loads of the values placed upon her in her training to be a Wraith and having to lie to those around her. She knows Darrow far too well, but can’t reveal that to anyone, needing to sever any connection with the beast that he has become. She has a friend and courtier, Victoria, from the queen’s palace hidden in her room and a very important task to carry out. Someone very innocent, needs her help to escape the Cube and the city of Agartha, partly to protect a secret that can never be revealed and also to protect Nadia herself. Wraiths are trained killers and assassins, most with enhanced shifter or fae capabilities, able to detect any movement or deceit. She has to balance lying to those who trust her in her role as a Wraith and saving a life, as she and Victoria must travel through the dangerous Shade to reach a place of safety. She is confronted by the creature herself, as she tries to flee without notice, and it wants her to join him. But nothing will deter her from her chosen path and she must reach the Shimmer and the secret portal to the human realm, to leave the one who needs protection in safe hands. The book starts straight into Nadia’s life and her day of reckoning, bone tired and weak from what she has already gone through, but knowing she can’t show any signs of weakness. This book is meant to be the starting point for the Queen’s Wraith series and able to be read as a standalone story. You get to learn more about the world she lives in after the surface of their world became unliveable, and even a little bit about her family and her brother. The reason for her sudden journey is well hidden until it needs to be revealed and left me divided about her actions and their necessity. I received an ARC copy of this book form BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
There is a lot of story included in this prequel. A complex opener of the series (although will likely lead seamlessly into the main story arc). The journey to save a baby by escaping to the human realm although not very clear on the why...doesn't detract from an amazing adventure. Grabs you from the beginning and has you pulling for success...
Nadia is an interesting character. She's got amazing friends and family and also the weight of the world. This book was a good intro to the world but still leaves plenty to be discovered.
A half werewolf and half human is learning to become a Queens guard when she finds out that she is pregnant and ends up having a baby that the other guards would kill.
