About the author

Grant Patterson was born in Vancouver BC. He attended Simon Fraser University, and graduated in 1995 with a BA in Criminology. He retired from the Canada Border Services Agency in 2017, and lives in Delta with his wife and children. Grant has also lived and travelled extensively in Brazil, where his Will Bryant Thrillers are set.

He has been writing since 2012, and now has twenty-one published works. His bestselling works are A Life on the Line: My Unexpected Career with the Canada Border Services Agency, a memoir of his CBSA experiences, and Bomber's Moon, a novel set during the Bomber Command offensive against Nazi Germany.

Looking to the end .

Great read really enjoyed this story ,had me gripped from start to finish . The ups and downs of ariel combat , relationships , fear , guilt etc all different emotions the crew's went through to get them to the end of their tour . Well worth a read !

This brilliant evocation though the eyes of an individual gunner on bombers was thrilling, realistic, at times desperately sad and gripping throughout. With 55,000 plus aircrew killed, and 10 percent of bombers often lost over Germany, this was life faced with expectations of death. These were young, intelligent, capable men with everything to live for and so often dying. Fail to finish your allotted missions, even after 20 missions, and you were dismissed minus rank, described as LMF (low moral fibre) , and allotted to the meanest of work. To the shame of the RAF hierarchy.

A gripping, realistic story. David (Gnat) Royce is a Flying Officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force stationed in coastal England 1943/44. As a turret gunner, he and his comrades fly bombing missions into Germany in the famous Avro Lancasters. Each mission is a life or death venture as the Nazis are always defending with anti aircraft flak and quick fighter planes. Outstanding research by the author as we immerse ourselves into the lexicon and palpable feel of the camaraderie of the crew as they navigate peril while witnessing many of their friends get blown out of the sky just meters away. Relationships on the ground are also fraught with uncertainty. How close do you want to get with someone who may not be at the breakfast table the next morning? Gnat is a survivor who becomes more and more hardened as he approaches his final missions. He falls fairly hard for fellow Officer, Ellen (even though she snores like a freight train) but knows that their love is fleeting. Nothing goes the way you plan when at war. An insightful, taut and moving story. Not often do we get to read about imperfect but heroic Canadians. Highly recommend.
