Life happens when you’re not looking. Unfortunately, so do a lot of other things.
Hazard and Somerset: Off Duty Volume 3 is a collection of short stories. It includes the following:
“If Your Friends Jumped Off a Bridge”
Hazard is going to get Evie the perfect toy for her birthday, no matter what. This story takes place before Relative Justice.
“Don’t Tell Your Dad”
Getting Colt settled isn’t exactly a smooth process, but you’ve got to break some eggs (or…something) to make an omelet. This story takes place before Custody Battles.
“Wait Till Your Father Gets Home”
Somers just wants to take a nap on his birthday. This story takes place before Domestic Animals.
“Responsible Adults”
Hazard and Somers chaperone a school dance. This story takes place before Father Complex.
“Under My Roof”
Hazard and Somers just want some alone time. Some adult alone time. This story takes place before Father Complex.
“One Day You’ll Thank Me”
Hazard’s birthday scavenger hunt, redux. This story takes place before Final Orders.
“Hazard and Somerset: Off Duty 3”
Hazard and Somers take Colt to summer camp, and things go sideways. This story takes place after Final Orders.
Please note that the first seven stories were distributed previously in various formats.
“Hazard and Somerset: Off Duty 3” is exclusively available in this collection.
I'm a long-time Midwesterner. I've lived in Chicago, Bloomington (IN), and Saint Louis, my current home. Aside from reading and writing (which take up a lot of my time), I'm an educator.
While I enjoy reading across many genres, my two main loves are mystery and speculative fiction. I used to keep a list of favorite books, but it changes so frequently that I've given up. I'm always looking for recommendations, though, so please drop me a line if you have something in mind!
My big goal right now is one day to be responsible enough to get a dog.
I almost don't want to rate this simply because I've come to expect these interludes to be funny.
I know the author doesn't write for me but I gotta admit I was disappointed not to be amused. Under My Roof with the tube socks and the impromptu fire drill was the one moment of levity sprinkled amongst seven stories!
SEVEN!
Not to say I didn't enjoy reading them but I felt a bit robbed since, despite what Hazard thinks of his husband, I think both of these knuckleheads are actually funny, though I am intrigued by that final scene in Off Duty.
What is that? What's happening? Inquiring minds wanna know. So I'll go with 3 stars since you have to read these interludes to keep up to date on all the things.
This might not be my favourite fluffy bind-up but I'm forever weak by any Hazard/Evie content so that first story was a delightful jumping off point. Also, the nerd squad imprinting on Hazard? Gold.
I was mostly curious how the last one would go because that usually gives us a taste of what's to come in the next series and while I'm glad this one was far less dramatic/mic-dropy than the last.. it didn't quite intrigue me the way I expected. But I'm sure Ashe is cooking up something with this new addition so we shall see.
What is there not to enjoy about the short story collections that Gregory Ashe blesses us with after the conclusion of any arc in his writing? This is the for-sale compilation of all the freebie shorts he releases one at a time with the publication of each new novel, but thank goodness, for those of us who love to horde a good collection to read all it once, he always supplies that option and includes an exclusive, bonus story to boot!
These shorts are always fun, often hilarious, low key nerve-wracking, and enhance the cast of Hazard and Somerset without making them a required reading. So if shorts aren’t your cup of tea, don’t be worried thinking there will be references to them throughout the series that you won’t grasp. That being said, I highly recommend picking the Off Duty collections up. They’re like popcorn—hot and fresh movie theatre popcorn at that!
I always have to highlight one of my favorites, and in this collection it’s a tossup between Responsible Adults, which is about just how right—read: wrong—Hazard and Somers’s chaperoning of the high school dance went, and Off Duty 3 in which the couple drop Colt off at summer camp, only for it to degrade into drugs, murder, and mystery in a way that can only happen to this detective duo. (The ending is quite a teaser for future possibilities, too, just in case you needed even more of a nudge to pick this up!)
A wonderful read perfect for a lazy day! If you’ve been a fan of Hazard and Somerset for this long, be sure to add this collection to your library.
These shorts give you perfect snippets of the always eventful day lives that Hazard and Somers have with Colt and Evie—talk about a handful! Those kids are enough to give any parent an aneurysm.
These little stories are all so full of humour and... family ♥
If your friends jumped off a bridge: Here Hazard will demonstrate that he can be a marshmallow and still kick ass *laughs* Don't Tell Your Dad: Hazard is off to see his mom, and Somers experiences the joys of teenagers running amok in the house *shudders* Wait Till Your Father Gets Home: It's John's birthday, and yet, he still can't get a simple nap. Kids are such a bliss, aren't they? Responsible Adults: Whoever thought that having Hazard and Somers as chaperons in the high school dance was a good idea should have their brains checked. Just saying... Under My Roof: Your offspring will make having a healthy sex life an unattainable dream ~sighs~ One Day You'll Thank Me': Scavenger hunt!!!! Hazard and Somerset: Off Duty: Who'd have thought that Hazard and Somers could make such a good team with Theo and Augie while battling drug dealers? It'd have been better if they hadn't done it at Colt's summer camp, but oh, well! At least Colt can come back home... and Ashley. and maybe he has got a dog?
Seriously, these stories are refreshing, funny, and, if you have kids, so, so relatable *dies laughing*
we need to start a Hazard quote database because he has so many iconic lines 🤣👏🏼
my personal favorite stories from the collection:
“Responsible Adults” - where Hazard gets low-key owned by a random lanky kid at the school dance lol
and yes, Hazard is indeed God 🙏🏼
“One Day You’ll Thank Me” - scavenger hunt redux, Somers & Colt working together 🥺
“Hazard and Somerset: Off Duty 3” - and here i thought dropping Colt off at summer camp would be as simple as 1, 2, 3 🤪 so much great content: Auggie and Theo, the reunion of grumpy Hazard and his fan club, Arthur's low-key & innocent burns at Hazard (had me cackling up a storm 😂), and that ending??? love how GA sets up the next arc like this, i'm already impatient for more!
I somehow missed the other Off Duty volumes but will have to fix that. Seems like H&S are never really off duty here, but there were some laughs along the way. I especially loved the ending since it leaves me feeling like there is more H&S to come!
The Off Duty books in Gregory Ashe’s Hazard and Somerset series comprise sets of short stories that are take place between the full-length books in the series and feature the guys during their downtime. It’s always a refresthing change to be able to spend time with Hazard and Somers when they’re not in life-or-death situatons, and I love that we get to see them in quieter moments of simple domesticity where their love for each other and the degree to which they get each other really shine through. It doesn't matter what they're doing, they're always completely and utterly them, which goes to show just how much their creator understands them and cares about them. There's always humour to be found in an H&S book, but in these shorts, the author lets his talent for comedy have full-rein whether it's in the wonderful banter we've come to know and love, in the titles of the documentaries Hazard is fond of watching, or in the daft situations they often find themselves in.
In this collection… the guys find out just how difficult it can be to find some alone time with a teenager in the house… All John really wants for his birthday is a nap, but actually getting one proves impossible… and Emery Hazard chaperones the school dance like it’s 1899… I loved seeing Somers and Colt teaming up for Hazard’s birthday scavenger hunt, and in the new story in the collection – Off Duty 3 – Hazard and Somers take a very reluctant Colt to summer camp – only to end up stranded and battling a group of drug dealers, ably assisted by Theo and Auggie. (I’m SO excited for the continuation of their story in books 3&4 of the First Quarto series.) But, as usual, just when you think our guys are going to be able to take things easy for once… it looks like there’s a new face in town who’s going to complicate matters!
All these stories (bar the last one) were previously made available via the author’s newsletter but I always enjoy dipping in and out of the Off Duty stories once they’re collected together as well.
I'm not going to parse out ratings for these individually. I don't have the energy for that, I'm an unapologetic Greg 'stan and these are all the little stories that happen in between the big books. They fit perfectly and give this world life.
IF YOUR FRIENDS JUMPED OFF A BRIDGE This happens before H&S wedding, each going overboard with gifts for Evie's birthday. Emery dead set on getting her a particular gift. Predictably thing go haywire. It's all worth it.
DON'T TELL YOUR DAD Colt is having growing pains. The Hazar-Somerset household is feeling it. Somers most of all but he's a good man.
WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME It's John's birthday. He's trying to take a nap but his family won't cooperate. We've all been there.
RESPONSIBLE ADULTS If you read Domestic Animals and at the end thought "aww, how sweet 💞👬🏼" think again. Hazard gets a fan club. It's unrequited love. H&S will either not be chaperoning any future school dances or they will be the designated chaperones until Colt graduates.
UNDER MY ROOFHazard is spreading his wings as a parent which with Colt being a teenager it's ... trying. However "Parenting, Hazard was learning, involved a diverse array of skills and mastery of arcane knowledge - in other words, two of the things he loved most." So a win-win! Plus there's this observation about Somers during an intimate moment with Hazard "He looked drunk on his favorite cocktail - attention and touch and Emery Hazard." *heart eyes*
ONE DAY YOU'LL THANK ME It's Emery's birthday. Let the game begin. Watching Hazard fight the bliss of being loved and cared about will never get old.
HAZARD AND SOMERSET: OFF DUTY Colt is going to summer camp. He isn't happy about it. Things take a turn. We are left with a hook for some future stories/series? I'm intrigued.
There are six stories in total highlighting the madness that consumes Emery and John-Henry’s lives and relationships. From Evie’s birthday party, to early life with Colt, to the men forever wanting some down time and time alone together, to constantly stepping into trouble, life moves fast for the men, but there are small touches of brief, tender moments between them.
You would want to read these stories if you have followed the series for more insight into the lives and relationship of John-Henry and Emery and to prepare for a glimpse of where their story will go next.
What's not to love about another set of Hazard and Somers short stories? The more I read about all the drama they go through, the more I appreciate all these little lowkey slice of life moments. I love Hazard being a little kid dad and how he spoils Evie. And of course there's plenty of shenanigans as Colt settles into life with Hazard and Somers. Even if these stories are more casual, some are pretty action packed because trouble tends to follow these two everywhere. As always I can't wait for more of them, and thankfully Gregory Ashe is constantly blessing us with short stories, flash fiction, and more books!
I thought this would be just cute domestic snippets featuring our boys and their family but the final short gives an unexpected little burst of 'drama/adventure'. Emery's second birthday treasure hunt is even crazier than his first and stars an array of hilarious little cameos from Nico, Gray and Ash. I was half expecting a Shaw appearance (but alas no). And since when did Nico start calling Hazard 'Ree'?? By this stage, I'm so fond of these characters, I'd happily read JH & Emery crocheting quietly at home LOL.
*sobbing uncontrollably into my stuffed dinosaur* I'm not ready, okay? I'm not ready to say goodbye. Those characters have been a part of me for so long and now I'm just supposed to let them go? It's never gonna happen. They'll remain in my heart forever. I love them so much, even after everything. We've been through so much together. I read all those books and I would read 20 more (please Greg!!). The intro isn't a joke, I am actually sobbing right now. I'm gonna miss them so much. I actually don't know what I am supposed to do now. How do I move forward? Wow. Just wow. I felt them growing with me, me and them, going through shit and getting better, healing and breaking - we did it together. I'm forever changed by those books. Thank you for touching my life with your art, Gregory❤️
Facet z licznikiem i notesem w dłoni.
Final book of little novellas that fits inside the Hazard and Somerset Arrows in Hand universe which gives us some great parenting adventures; Hazard’s birthday; and of course, Hazard and Somers trying to find alone time.
Reasons I Recommend:
1) Fun additions to a great world
2) Love seeing how “off duty” really means nothing to them at all and
3) Hazard secretly loving the found family he bitches about.
Ugh, I love these short stories and the glimpse it gives us into Hazard's and Somer's life after the credits roll. It's equal parts annoying and heartwarming seeing how Colt is fitting in to their family as well. Cannot handle the teen angst and surliness but it makes those heartwarming moments between Emery, John-Henry and Colt all the more sweet. These shorts were a well-received tonic after the craziness of Final Orders. I can't wait for the PI rivalry teased in the last story, but honestly how many cases does a small town like Wahredua have?! Can't wait!

After the pain and trauma (I mean that in a loving way) of the main books in this series, it's a treat to relax with the humor and... more humor of these short stories. Which is not to say there isn't drama in this book—I feel for Hazard and Somerset's innocent neighbors, what with these guys' inability to set foot outside their house without stumbling into violent confrontations. But on the whole, things are resolved without significant bodily harm, and all the good guys' hearts are full at the end. As was mine.
My thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this book.
I enjoyed these Off Duty stories more than the previous ones.
I will miss Somers and Hazard (even though I felt a little like Hazard was not quite in character anymore throughout a lot of the last "season". I can't remember him struggling that much in social settings or understanding interactions and acting appropriately in the first "season".) and I wonder if there will be more to come. Colt and Ash grew on me a lot after I really didn't like the addition in the beginning.
And Somers will always be my favourite character ♡♡♡♡
A collection of cute, silly, heartwarming and/or incredibly frustrating stories featuring Hazard, Somers and their family and friends. I liked some of these better than others. Honestly the very last one was a bit ridiculous and, considering its chronological context, somewhat soured the ending of Final Orders for me. Probably would have been better to end this collection with Hazard's birthday party the story before. Anyway, nevermind. These were mostly fun.
