On New Year's eve 2022, unknown flying objects appear over Europe and ignite an inferno of violence among themselves. Debris from one of the spacecraft falls on Athens, turning the city center into a smoking crater.
The destroyed remnant of the former metropolis is declared a restricted zone by NATO forces and sealed off. Amidst the few survivors struggling for food, medicine, and clean water, Nikos takes care of his girlfriend Maria, only to soon find out that to avert a creeping death, there is only one way out of the hell of Athens—the wreckage of the alien ship.
At the same time, a special forces team is sent on an impossible mission, as NATO's European Command has evidence that another spaceship has landed in the jungles of Africa and its Alien crew appears to still be alive...
Don't miss Bestseller Joshua T. Calvert's next Science Fiction epic. A story of survival, invasion, and war that's perfect for fans of Jay Allan, Joshua Dalzelle, and S.M. Anderson.
Joshua T. Calvert has traveled the world--on foot, by Jeep, by bicycle, by motorcycle, and lots of other ways besides. As you might imagine, he's seen many things most people never see - including an Iranian prison cell, from the inside! In Kyrgyzstan, he fared slightly better, narrowly avoiding being kidnapped for ransom. Skydiver, scuba diver, martial artist, adventurer - his goal is to experience everything possible, and then make it real to you in his books. And he's made a good run of it so far: in the Philippines, he did police training on multiple types of firearms (despite being no fan of guns himself); dove in Asian waters among sharks and shipwrecks; and patrolled with Sumatran jungle rangers.
That's what defines Calvert's approach to method writing: pushing himself beyond his own limits, to experience first-hand what his characters experience, to make your immersion in his stories as deep as it can be.
For Ganymede Rises, after a slight detour with some smugglers in the deserts of Uzbekistan and the steppes of Mongolia, he traveled by dogsled and snowshoe to the Arctic Circle to experience first-hand what it's like to be utterly isolated in the coldest place on Earth. For his book The Fossil, he sat with professional pilots in flight simulators for Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft to learn what it's like to fly a passenger jet. His latest adventure: a parabolic flight with European Space Agency astronauts, to experience zero-gravity. All so he can describe it to you, in his own words.
A double alien invasion with the Solar System a battleground for the two alien races and Earth is bearing the brunt of it. From Athens to the African jungle, with Scotland in the equation. No USA saving the world in this story which is a pleasant surprise. It was okay, neither brilliant nor dull.
The Aliens arrive right away. That is my only spoiler. This is a story more about people and the human condition towards each other. A well written book. I am not that big of a fan of this type of genre but looking for something different to read I stumbled on this story and decided to read it. I enjoyed the story and finished the book unlike the last two I gave a chance on. This one held my interest till the end and I enjoyed following the characters. I will be giving the other books in the series a chance also. As you can tell I am not a professional reviewer. I was not asked by the author to write a review. I am just a plain old Kindle reader. The reason for the 4 star rating was only for the jumps in the story to future parts in the story that would give me pause to go back to see what I missed only to find out I didn't miss anything but I was placed a few weeks or months into the story without being directed there till later in the chapter. All in all a great read. Go for it. I think you will enjoy this story.
It’s quite difficult for me to put into words just how badly written this book is. Apologies Calvert. All I can say is that I read it all hoping it would get better and it didn’t. It struggled to…become…anything! Instead it was a hodge podge of running, fighting and struggle with minimal storylines that went nowhere. Glad it was cheap.
Appalling, really. I had to ask if this was translated from another language as what you read seems to bear no reality to the English I use or have come to understand. And it's not because the author is being experimental, it's simply that totally inappropriate words are put together and you have to spend ages trying to work out what it really means. It's a bit like someone has been given the original words and then been asked to use a translation, then a thesaurus to find alternatives to avoid repetition, without understanding how that might rather complicate things and baffle the reader. I've just finished it and I couldn't really tell you what it was all about. Shame really, as some of his earlier books aren't bad at all.
The book by itself has an interesting concept about 2 alien species fighting one another and earth just happened to get stuck in the middle. It's written in a captivating way so I ended up reading it quite quickly. What I didn't like is that it abruptly ends and doesn't feel like something very significant happened. Also, it feels a little bit exaggerated even for a sci-fi book. Having said all that I did enjoy this book, if I could I would give it a 3.7 stars but since I can't and I still don't think it's a 4 stars book I ended up giving it a 3 stars review but it's a fun read
They were not at war with us; we just happened to be inconveniently in their way! This story is definitely NOT for the faint of heart. Very dark and brutal, but that is what happens during wars, especially when aliens are not concerned at all about 'humans' or our solar system for that matter. Some buildup of hope toward the end for humanity, but only time will tell. Great story!
I got to just over 50% before I gave up on this book. The first few chapters went as one would expect in an alien incursion story. However, it just went into a big nowhere from there. The author does a horrible job describing the scenes. The story jumps from one thing to another and there seems to be no discernible plot. Nothing really makes any sense. Very poorly done.
I have read other work from you and reading this book tells me to keep reading more. Your ability to bring the words of your story into pictures in the space right before my eyes is almost beyond believable. You also have captured the spirit and fight mentality for my battle buddy on the right, left, front and back with intelligent Grace Looking forward to the next one Where ever did you find the spirit of the .50 cal sniper girl
I only read the first 6 chapters and gave up. This novel is a grueling slow read with far more details than I care for. Don't get me wrong, I'm positive that there are huge fans of this work and it has a market for those readers. I'm just not in their category.
I gave 2 stars for what I read, it is rated above 4 stars. I read some of the reviews and we all read at least part of the same book. I just don't get it.
This book presents an interesting premise and reasonably good character development. However I found it to be very slow moving and hard to follow. I had a difficult time picturing the details of the action scenes and technical descriptions. I am not sure if I will try book 2.
An alien war erupts in space. Unfortunately it’s being fought over the 3rd planet in a remote system!
This is real page turner as the (literal) fall out from an alien dog fight in our part of the Solar System causes decimation to Earth. A survivor from a stricken city and a group of battle hardened warriors hunt for a stricken ship.
Not really that fun. I suspect many scifi fans will find it adequate, but for me, it was too much of a drag after I hit section 2 of the book. It was tough to get through it although up to that point, I'd been sailing along quite nicely. Even so, the story isn't a bad one, it just didn't appeal to me. I won't be continuing with this series.
At first I thought I wouldn’t like this book but it kept my interest and the raw emotion grabbed me and I needed to find out what was to occur. It was suspenseful and you had to keep reading. I won’t say why because you need to read it, but I definitely will continue to the next book in the series. Enjoy!
I remember meeting a Canadian soldier at the airport as we were waiting for a shuttle bus, it was painful watching him walk and we struck up a conversation he had had 2 surgeries and was waiting on a 3rd so he could get back into the field. It's this type of attitude that the heroes in this book display. Thank goodness we have ppl like them in fact as well as fiction.
Typical guys books, but as woman that loves this type of book, it was pretty good. Nikos was very lucky and traveled through I guess some type of wormhole to another side of the planet via the "Tear" ship. Seeing an actual alien must have blown their minds. Next remains to be seen!
Interesting concept. Two alien races battle each other in our solar system paying scant attention to humans. The capture of an alien changes things so that the aliens finally notice the ants (us). All that made me feel insignificant. Then, compared to the universe, we are hardly even ants.
This was an "over the top" apocalypse story. What a great book. Any book that makes my imagination run wild and I couldn't put it down mindset, has to be a great story. Even though this is about an alien invasion, it's really not about aliens. I recommend reading this to all that love fiction and adventures.
This book starts the story with the possibility of a very poor ending. The aliens show their strengths and the human race takes the beginning of a chance at figuring out how they can possibly defeat the aliens.
This was a good book overall it just took me some time to get into the storyline as the first couple of chapters which set up Nicos storyline were somewhat of a challenge. But once that was completed. The story moved fairly well and I ended up enjoying the book.
This was a good start to this series. The characters are well developed and varied. Humor is used to lighten some stressful situation appropriately. Glossary included but wish I had realised it at the start of the book.
You are taken on a journey that shows the earth was being invaded buy a Alien people that want our planet. The did a good job with the book and keeps wanting more.
Earth is the battle ground for two warring alien spices, with chunks of debris from their skirmishes falling to Earth. Interesting premise, curious to see how it developes over the next two books in the series.
It's not the best science fiction I've ever read. It's a nice quick read. It certainly bus a possible future. I do wish he'd not make so many brings 5, as 5 meters, 5 square meters. It's a little annoying.
Slow at first and a lot of detail but it gets much more interesting.
Liked the main character he seemed genuine. The events seem plausible and interesting, overall I liked it very much. The events in the jungle were very well written.
This kept me reading late into the night reading. It had all the required action with realistic details of the ships and battle. I'm definitely looking forward to reading this whole series!!
