After a series of personal tragedies and abuse from his alcoholic mother, eighteen-year-old Bax is determined to rebuild his life.
Using money left to him by his father, he finds a place to live and a job at the local coffee shop. But after he begins to experience psychic visions after touching certain objects, Bax realizes that a normal life may not be in store for him.
Things take a turn for the scary when he uncovers evidence that may have belonged to the latest victim of a serial killer. With no family to turn to, he enlists the help of Piper: his fellow barista and a lover of mysteries.
Together, they attempt to track the killer down before another life is lost. But are Bax's unique abilities and Piper's wits enough to bring the murderer to justice?
I guess I am the classic "late bloomer." I had to sit in the front row of the class picture every year in elementary school; I didn't reach my present, permanent height until the year I got my driver's license. It took me a long time to "grow up" mentally, too; I was probably the least goal-oriented person you could ever meet.
I always enjoyed reading books, though I was convinced that I was not, and never would be, creative enough to come up with an original idea or story without cobbling it together from things I'd already seen.
And so, in my mid-forties, imagine my surprise when a story was born inside my head, and nine months later had grown so large that I couldn't hold it in any more. I'm sure many writers tell similar origin stories, but I sure wouldn't wish a three-decade gap between high school Creative Writing class and, you know, writing something actually creative.
Better a "late bloomer" than a "never bloomer," I guess.
What else? Oh, yeah, I live in Arizona with my amazing wife Vaneza, and our kids, June, Benji, and Sunshine (two are dogs and one is a cat, I'll let you figure out which is which).
Killers is the first book in The Bax Mysteries written by Patrick Hodges, an author whose previous sci-fi / fantasy series, Wielders of Arantha, was one I read and very much enjoyed several years ago. This latest collection is more paranormal in nature, but at its core it is a solid mystery and coming-of-age story about a teenager who has struggled throughout most of his life. Bax is charming, kind, and mistrusting, but he's had one woman in his corner who's helped cultivate a new life when he's finally released from an unfortunate sentence and youthful mistake. Newly on his own, he must learn how to navigate his realities and limitations; unfortunately his path will not be a simple one. Visions begin to plague him, which he realizes are connected to a kidnapping and murder that occurred close to where he lives. Many women he meets at his new job and near his residence offer him guidance and comforts, yet Bax needs to decide who is a foe, friend, or perhaps more.
Hodges excelled in this story with his characterization. All of Bax's relationships have complex, multi-dimensional levels that add the appropriate nuances of life. The cop who arrested him seems to have it out for him, yet there's potentially a hidden soft spot if Bax can stay clean. A hot girl he wants to date has another guy already, and another girl at the coffeeshop might be the next best thing -- that blurry line of friendship might get in the way. As Bax gets pulled into the mystery, he finds himself embedded in a Nancy Drew-Hardy Boys partnership to solve the recent murders... and someone he knows is involved. When he dives to deeply, he almost loses everything.
I greatly enjoyed the premise of this story, the background being built for future books, and the eerie moments when Bax meets people who have either passed on or are nowhere near him physically. How will he cope with his newly discovered hidden talents? Will the police detain him because of his past mistakes? Will the women in his circle trust his fresh lease on life or worry he's just a con artist. And will he accept everyone coming into his life as a support system or something far more sinister? Kudos to Hodges for developing a fantastic series. Recommend reading all three together so you can feel the full presence of the haunting setting and unknown machinations occurring in the background.
Five glorious stars 🌟 for not only an awesome tale and what looks to be an awesome series, but also for the positive messages woven throughout the novel.
I don't think I've ever read a book quite like this before, but I love stepping out of the norm. It's refreshing to read something so original. Bax has such a sad backstory, but it's good to see him trying to get his life on track even with these new abilities of his. He's the kind of character you want in your corner, and I'm sure those girls are happy he's in there. This book is well-written, exciting, and intriguing. You never quite know what's going to happen next. Such a good start to the series.
A phenomenal start to a new series by Patrick Hodges! Killers is a fast-paced read that sucked me in from the first chapter. Brimming with mystery and suspense, it's also filled with moments of teenage angst and coming-of-age relatability.
Bax is trying to turn his life around but keeps skirting the line of trouble. When his new psychic powers emerge, he's determined to solve the case of a serial killer but needs to employ the help of a wickedly smart redhead, Piper. Adventure and friendship abound as the two of them set to work, uncovering clues, and tossing themselves into a path of grave danger.
Killers is an unputdownable mystery that will leave you ready for more action and adventure. Hodges expertly weaves together multiple storylines and infuses the plot with unexpected twists. The characters are complex and intriguing, adding depth to the friendships and working relationships of all involved in the case. Plus, Killers foreshadows more mystery for book 2. Luckily, Ghosts is now available!
I absolutely loved Killers: The Bax Mysteries Book One. I found it hard to put down once I started it. The mystery was intriguing as well as heartbreaking, and the added psychic abilities Bax develops to help track down the killer gave it a perfect paranormal spin.
I found Bax to be genuine and likable right from the beginning as he works to make a life for himself. The supporting characters are well-rounded and pretty awesome too, especially Officer Rojas. She might be my favorite. And little Trina is just so darn cute.
This book kept me turning the pages until I reached the end and immediately wanted more. The mystery of Bax’s abilities, the mystery of finding a killer, it all played out in my head like a movie and I was totally sucked in. I can’t wait to see what kind of mystery Bax gets mixed up in next.
sadly, it reminds me too much of my own life. Patrick Hodges looks like someone I met on Mariposa in Phoenix Arizona. Then too, they all look the same in them parts.
Bax is such a likeable and relatable character that you’ll be rooting for him the whole time as the big mystery unfolds. Definitely grab this one if you love urban fantasies with heart and a fun mystery!
I loved this book as it is different to any I've read before. Great characters, great kids characters too. The mention of the dad's illness was a surprise as I have it and it's rare. The storyline some may say is too far fetched but I loved it. The horror of the killer was even well thought out. Recommend this book highly
While I’m really not a fan of the f-word, this story is well-written. There’s clear character development, a fully defined plot, believable characters, and realistic dialogue. I LOVE that while there’s clearly more to the story, this one has a clear ending that gives the reader closure. I’m definitely going to reread this one, and I do intend to get the next book in the series. The only thing that would have perfected this would have been a way to cut the f-bombs for those who don’t care for them. Maybe kindle can develop an option for that.
Note to the author, thank you for a delightful, engaging read. Writing something this polished takes a lot of effort, and I appreciate the level of quality. Please continue!
It's categorized as 'Teens &Young Adults' and 'Cozy mystery'. I usually avoid those like the pest, because it means 'For Children' and 'Sickly sweet'. But the blurb sounded good, and it was free, so I didn't study as hard as I usually do. This is actually suitable for mature teenagers. It doesn't start cozy, which is good, but towards the end it does turn over-sweet. Heartwarming stepping over the line to heartburn. The plot isn't bad. Promising, but this will never be truly adult stuff.
I guess the premise caught my attention. Dunno. But the characters captured me, and the plot was a little captivating. The whole thing grew on me. By the end, I was enjoying it; looking forward to reading it. It’s probably not 5-star, but I’m leaving that because I enjoyed it. It may also be young adult. Dunno that, either. But I enjoyed it … I DO know that. Guess I’ll hafta read the next one now!!
I really enjoyed this book. I have a habit of starting books and rarely finishing them but I couldn't put this one down. Bax is such a likeable and interesting character that I couldn't stop thinking about him. It should be illegal that this book is for free. Definitely will be purchasing the rest of the series since I cannot wait to read more of Bax' story!
I really enjoyed how the author made the story follow the flow while seeming to go all over the place then tying all the threads together into a perfect bow at the end.
reads like a snarky autobiography, first person. first eighteen year old person. but with an old soul and a heart of gold. if there's sequels, read them, too...
What a wonderful book! I just loved Bax, with all his flaws you know there's a sweet man inside there. His little posse of middle schoolers are hilarious, too. Highly recommend!
Really! You have to read it and then the other 3 because you will LOVE it! Bax is just so cool and his personal story is cool! I have purchased Book #2 and Book #3.
