Killers is the first book in The Bax Mysteries written by Patrick Hodges, an author whose previous sci-fi / fantasy series, Wielders of Arantha, was one I read and very much enjoyed several years ago. This latest collection is more paranormal in nature, but at its core it is a solid mystery and coming-of-age story about a teenager who has struggled throughout most of his life. Bax is charming, kind, and mistrusting, but he's had one woman in his corner who's helped cultivate a new life when he's finally released from an unfortunate sentence and youthful mistake. Newly on his own, he must learn how to navigate his realities and limitations; unfortunately his path will not be a simple one. Visions begin to plague him, which he realizes are connected to a kidnapping and murder that occurred close to where he lives. Many women he meets at his new job and near his residence offer him guidance and comforts, yet Bax needs to decide who is a foe, friend, or perhaps more.
Hodges excelled in this story with his characterization. All of Bax's relationships have complex, multi-dimensional levels that add the appropriate nuances of life. The cop who arrested him seems to have it out for him, yet there's potentially a hidden soft spot if Bax can stay clean. A hot girl he wants to date has another guy already, and another girl at the coffeeshop might be the next best thing -- that blurry line of friendship might get in the way. As Bax gets pulled into the mystery, he finds himself embedded in a Nancy Drew-Hardy Boys partnership to solve the recent murders... and someone he knows is involved. When he dives to deeply, he almost loses everything.
I greatly enjoyed the premise of this story, the background being built for future books, and the eerie moments when Bax meets people who have either passed on or are nowhere near him physically. How will he cope with his newly discovered hidden talents? Will the police detain him because of his past mistakes? Will the women in his circle trust his fresh lease on life or worry he's just a con artist. And will he accept everyone coming into his life as a support system or something far more sinister? Kudos to Hodges for developing a fantastic series. Recommend reading all three together so you can feel the full presence of the haunting setting and unknown machinations occurring in the background.
