Ten pages into this book and I was already in confusion. Another six and my brain decided it was time for a vacation...

And when I wasn’t confused, I was really annoyed.

Set in Cambridge (29 year old?) Haley, is unaware of the power she possesses until her younger sister, Penny, is kidnapped. She is then forced to acknowledge the truth of her heritage― she’s a witch.

Oh but she isn’t just any ordinary witch. She’s a rare type of witch and has the ability to wield all four elements at once, whereas most specialize in one.

If only she were that cool😒

We can’t forget that she also manages to find the “love of her life”, Lucas, who just so happens to be the person assigned to protect her― her Seven, whom she only knows for all of 10 minutes before she starts getting doughy-eyed on him🤦‍♀️

And then we have her (not being totally creepy) staring at a photo of him:
“…she studied his features, committing them to memory, hoping to hold onto them and how they made her feel.”
Lady you literally just met the dude, he is an absolute stranger to you! Just what feelings are you hoping to remember?!🤨

All this coming from the woman who said: “I don’t have the time or inclination for dating” that very night!
My my, how fast you’ve changed your tune and all because some guy came to your rescue.
Way to stick to your words there🙄 I'm not against it, he's just someone who was able to help but come on.
Stop with the Insta-poo! It's not healthy for me or for you.

What's worse is that I might’ve taken all this better if she were a teenager, but she’s an adult. She has responsibilities and a goal to become VP by 35, all of which just happens to disappear.
There isn’t a single mention of her job, apart from that first page, anywhere in the book! How does that happen?!

Now for Lucas:
He has been watching over her for 3 years and knows everything about her, from her childhood nickname to the way she likes her coffee. But what he doesn’t know is that she’s never cast a spell in her life.

And yet…. “He didn’t just feel better, healed, he felt renewed.”

Yeah yeah we get it, she’s super powerful but doesn’t know it, will you shut up about it🙄

Can you fall in love with someone without ever interacting with them?
I fail to understand how that works🤨
Because that's exactly what Lucas does.
Pffft he fell in love with her just by watching her all these years.

“He wanted her. But it was more than that. He wanted her to be his.

🚨🚨SOMEONE CALL ANIMAL CONTROL BECAUSE I'M CERTAIN THIS ISN'T SAFE HUMAN BEHAVIOUR! 🚨🚨

Don’t even get me started on how misogynistic and archaic the idea of The Sevens is:
The Sevens, a secret group, that has existed for centuries. CENTURIES! In all that time, not once has there been a POC let alone a female in the group. Just like there aren’t any in the story. Talk about white-washing.

Haley is practically the only female in the story! Only once does another female make an appearance for longer than 2 seconds, but she hardly has any lines.

Well you got your wish💁‍♀️

“Whatever happened back at that safe house, she wasn’t the same person anymore.”
Wow, isn’t that a fantastic revelation. Just like that, within a single day, showing no evidence of this, Haley has been “changed”.

Yea... No.

I guess it’s because she’s just that speshul and her tears even more so since she’s crying every minute over something ridiculous, I bet they must be able to stop global warming!

Oh what magical tears you have…. All the better to plague you with.

And plague me you did🤦‍♀️
*sigh* I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to smack myself.

“He was asking her to trust him again, and in her gut, she knew she always could.”
ARE YOU SURE THAT’S NOT JUST YOUR HORMONES TALKING?? Because you can’t possibly be that foolish!🤨

“Nothing felt the same around him.”
She didn’t know him when they met so she doesn’t have anything to compare it with. This just doesn’t make sense. The inconsistencies!
There are plenty more which left me befuddled, especially regarding the magic system.
It wasn’t explained as well as it could’ve been. I didn’t understand it and how the concept of the Sevens worked exactly. The demons, yep there are demons, aren’t the least bit terrifying.

PLOT:
I wasn’t aware there was one🤔
In all 291 pages, not a single thing of value happened. It was just Hailey, "Queen of the tears", talking about finding her sister.
And that’s what it was all talk, no action… that’s not entirely true. There was action, just not the sort involving any form of violence if you know what I mean…👀

The entire book was a cacophony of will they-wont they only you know they will. And boi they do. There are more chapters dedicated to that than actually searching for Penny, which is absurd.
HER SISTER IS MISSING BUT SHE HAS PLENTY OF TIME TO MAKE-OUT WITH A GUY SHE JUST FREAKING MET!!

Hailstorm (that nickname is too good for her😑) Haley honestly behaves like a brash and overly-emotional teenager. I would’ve dnfed this but I felt bad to do so, now I'm feeling awful for having read this!

I appreciate that the author tried to tackle mental health issues, however it didn’t go so well. It was rushed, I mean you have all this time with them doing the deed so why not use it instead to better deal with Haley’s trauma🤨 Not that it would make a difference.

I felt no attachment to the characters, they were flat, the pacing was terrible, and there was a lot of telling and very little showing.

Huh I actually don’t have anything nice to say about this book, which is really surprising. No, there has to be something …. I guess the smut scenes were good?🤷‍♀️

“nothing was quite so dangerous as hope.”
True words, I have learnt my lesson.
Let’s not do this again, I prefer to keep my sanity thank you very much😌
Peace out xx

PS: I apologize for the many many gifs but it's my coping mechanism when it comes to disasters like this :((

SPLINTERED STARS is the first book in The Sevens series, and we start off with Haley and her sister, Penny, heading toward an underground car park. I never have liked those things, and this just confirms why! Luckily for Haley, although not so much for Penny, Lucas is on hand to save her. After all, it's why he was assigned to her three years ago.

What happened three years ago? I have no idea, but I really want to know. It is too coincidental for it to mean nothing. Lucas and Haley have an attraction, but Lucas knows he can't act on it. What he can do to help is provide Haley with the tools she needs to become the person she was born to be.

This book is a perfect example of how relationships can be formed in place of family bonds that are stronger and more versatile than anything you are born with. I loved how each of the Seven was completely individual but with an underlying core of loyalty and friendship.

This story ends with a teaser that has left me wanting the next book in the series immediately. I want more of Haley and Lucas. I want more Penny. I want... I want... LOL I want it all!

Absolutely recommended and bring on the next!

It could’ve been a great story. It felt flat to me - characters were not ones I could get attached to, the FMC was just whiny, naive, and showed no strength - the plot was missing. I could’ve see where it wanted to go but it never made it there. I cannot force myself in whatever genre I’m reading that people are willing to die for each other within a couple of days of meeting - nope - self- preservation alone dispels that ridiculous idea. I wanted to like this book, thought it had potential from the blurb, but it did not follow that path. I stayed annoyed during most of it, skipped through several paragraphs to realize nothing happened in the ones I skipped, and wished the author would have focused more on building the characters versus the attempt at mystery will they / won’t they come for her and keep it a secret blah blah. Such high hopes :(

Thanks BookSirens for the free ARC

This book was not what I expected but I enjoyed it. The characters are amazing. I got so drawn in, I read this book in 24 hours. My favorite character was Jack. This book has love, hurt, loyalty, and healing. It was interesting to me is to see the change in Haley over a week. The chemistry between her and Lucas was sizzling. Yet it kind of felt too action-packed but I would still read and recommend it. This book deserves four stars I loved it but not enough to make it my favorite. It’s a full-on paranormal romance in modern-day times with demons and witches. It reminded me of A discovery of witches and I think if you loved the series. Then you’ll love this series too.

Stayed up waaaay to late finishing Splintered Stars! I’m hooked & will absolutely be following along this new series! I love a book written from multiple POV & enjoyed the back & forth between Haley & Lucas. The banter is great & I love how we slowly learn more about all of the characters & the world (both are well developed). With the cliffhanger of an epilogue I cannot wait for book two to come out. If you like modern witchy books, medium burns, & a healthy dose of danger this book’s for you!

Overall an interesting read. However there were instances where things were not clear and the romance happened faster than I would have liked. There is also the fact that Lucas pretty much fell for Haley while watching her and being her protector, which honestly seems like a glorified stalker to me. Putting those aside, the core of the story was interesting and kept me curious. Overall 3.5 stars.

This book took me on many twists and turns. Haley doesn’t know what she is or what the world around her is about. Now she will learn the hard way that things aren’t what they seem. Rescuing her sister is too priority, becoming a badass and falling in love just might happen along the way though. Cant wait for book 2!

A dear friend sent me this book, and because I've been on a real non-fiction kick the past few years, the suspense in this book just about killed me! It was totally worth it tho. I got thoroughly attached to the characters, and while it did end on a bit of a cliffhanger, it was a hopeful one! Very well written.

The Splintered Stars novel is a promising start to the Sevens series. The book starts straight into the action before it backtracks with a little backstory as the main character learns more about what is actually going on. As this is a series, the story is set up to continue in the next novel and I’m curious about this series will look in the big picture, as I wonder if any of the other members of the Seven will be featured as a main, similar to other stories where different characters take turns to be the main.

Haley Quinlan is having dinner with her sister, Penny when the unthinkable happens as they are walking back to Haley’s car. Demons, that look similar to humans, come out of nowhere and end up kidnapping Penny and attempting to kidnap Haley. The only reason Haley was saved is due to a man suddenly appearing to rescue her. Before we get to this action, we get a glimpse into Haley’s personal life where she is very career-driven in her late twenties, who wants to become a VP for her company by the time she is 35. She has not had luck with romance and has no interest in dating. Neither is mentioned or explored again after the kidnapping takes place and the main part of the story begins. It could be something that is brought up later, but it really did not do much for me as it felt unnecessary to use sentences to describe this when it could be used for the other parts of the story.

It turns out that Haley is a witch, and so are her mother and sister, but she was kept in the dark. The man who rescued her is Lucas, who is actually her magical guardian. He is a Seven, which is an elite group of semi-immortal warriors sworn to protect witches. He has been assigned to watch over Haley for the past three years and is very attracted to her, even though he knows they should not be together as Sevens are not allowed to be with their charges. Most of the other members of the Seven come together to assist Lucas and Haley in their missions to (1) teach Haley about who she is and (2) rescue, Penny. The majority of the story is about Haley learning about her powers and learning more about the magical world. She learns about demons and witches, but it is not explored about why demons exist and their general motivation for going after witches.

The pacing can seem slow as it is a lot of setups where Haley, and the reader, are learning details about the magical world and the plot doesn’t propel forward as much as I thought it would. There are events that move the story along, but a lot of it is daily life where a lot of explanation takes place. Haley learns different magical skills and discovers a lot about her powers. I do wish that there were more struggles with learning each new skill as she seemed to just be great at everything she tried. For me, I am not a huge fan of instant perfection for characters and prefer at least some struggle, even the witches in Charmed were super powerful but weren’t perfect at it on day one. Every reader is different, so they might not believe the same type of character is preferable.

The members of the Seven are what kept me interested in this story as all of them have their own tragic backstories. I wanted to learn even more about them as there are a lot of unanswered questions I have about all of them. They have excellent banter and they support each other. They are a great family without being related by blood and I like that they communicated well together. They were great with their interactions with Haley, too. Haley was great in moments, but it was hard to remember that this is a woman in her late twenties as it felt more young adult based on some of her thoughts and actions.

Overall, it is a series that is worth a try as everyone will have their own opinions about the story and characters. I would be interested in continuing in order to learn more about the Seven, as I am not as invested in the main couple or even Haley/Penny events as much as I thought I would be. The magical powers in the story are very interesting to learn about. The series has great potential as there are elements that are very interesting. As it is the start of the series, it is difficult to fully judge it as the second one and beyond could be perfection. Therefore, I would be willing to read the next one and see how everything continues/turns out.

**I give a special thank you to BookSirens, the publisher, and the author for a chance to read an ARC for this book. The opinions expressed are completely my own.**

After winning this book in a giveaway that I entered initially because I was mesmerized by the cover, I was later super excited to find that it was both paranormal/fantasy and romance - two of my favorites. Yay!

The first book in a series - Book 1 follows the story of Haley, a newly discovered witch and Lucas, her Seven assigned secretly to protect her. When something tragically unexpected happens in Haley’s world, her life turns upside down and everything as she knows...shifts.

I haven’t read a paranormal story in a bit so it took awhile to get into the different terms and definitions, but I found myself sinking into the new plot lines and will definitely be following along in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the brotherhood feel of the Sevens and the characteristics each one has that make them different.

There are quite a few characters so I look forward to the stories unfolding in each book and to more development and backstory of each key person. Plus, the added elements of romance is a nice touch in the plot.

Splintered Stars fall somewhere in the middle for me. There were a few parts I loved and a few that I didn't, but for the most part it was an okay book.

I liked the main pieces of the story. You have the Seven, and elite group that has been tasked with protecting witches, witches and demons who want to drain the power from witches. The story is set in our world, or something close to it, there isn't a lot about that except of course for the witches and demons. You also don't get a lot of motive in this book. Like why there's a war (or skirmishes) between witches and demons, or how everything is kept hidden.

I feel a little lukewarm about the plot. The plot itself moves super slow, instead most of the book is focused on Haley and Lucas. I think the book covers about a week, but it feels much longer. I also don't like how some parts were mentioned and then dropped. It felt like deliberate strings being added just so they could not be tied off, if that makes sense. I know that a story that continues over several books has to have those, these just felt too deliberate. I don't want to give too much away, but a suddenly MIA friend and a phone call that felt several days overdue are a couple of examples. I felt like they were added to pull the plot forward.

I also have mixed feelings about Haley. In the book she is almost 30, but there are times I felt like her actions and reactions were those of someone much younger. She made a lot of the book feel like a YA novel (it is NOT a YA, there are some sexy scenes) because she was really immature at times. I didn't mind the insta-love, it's not my favorite, but I can appreciate it, but Haley's reaction to everything was at times annoying and juvenile. She and Lucas spent way too much time being introspective and having the same discussions about their feelings considering everything going on.

The other characters were good, we just don't see a lot of them. I love the Seven, I hope we see more of their stories.

Overall, I say give it a try. If you like witches and forbidden romance, I think you'll appreciate this book. I definitely want to know what happens next...and I hope some of my questions are answered in the second book.

I’m slowly getting used to reading books on my Kobo. And it’s stories like this that help draw me in and make me want to read ebooks. They may never be my favourite form of literary enjoyment, but they are definitely growing very happily on me. There was something amazing and wonderful about Madbury’s story and I can’t wait to read more tales of The Sevens!

I love that one of the drivers for Haley throughout this story is her love for her sister. Although they are somewhat estranged, she is still trying to find her and putting everything at risk just to save her baby sister. As an older sister, this was such a beautiful and realistic portrayal of what it is like to have a younger sibling. Even in the moments when I have felt distanced from my sister (which all siblings go through), just like Haley, I still would have moved heaven and earth to find her. And the fact that within the epilogue, it is clear that Penny also feels the same about her big sister… it’s just beautiful.

The immediate reaction between Haley and Lucas was nice. But what I liked the most was the way that they both got to know each other and worked towards each other in their acceptance of their attraction. Sometimes it can be a bit on the nose having a story in which immediate attraction means immediate love. In the case of this story, the immediate attraction was tempered by their willingness to get to know each other. It’s incredibly fun and beautiful.

At first I thought that this was a witch – vampire kind of story. The fact that it’s not, and the Seven find other ways to prolong their life was intriguing. I loved how Madbury built this amazing world and lore in such a subtle and unique way. It helps to draw you further and further into her world. I can’t believe that I didn’t get the chance to read the prologue before this novel though, I’d be interested to see how the world was built from the very first.

Splintered Stars is a fantastic paranormal fantasy story. it is filled with magic, mayhem and conspiracies. There is also that wonderful dose of lust and love throughout the story. this may be a paranormal romance story, but it was the conspiracy and sibling relationship that I loved the most… and I can’t wait to read the next story and find out what happens to Penny! And which Seven she falls for…

Splintered Stars is the first book in a series about witches, the Sevens, and demons. Hayley and her sister are attacked and her sister is taken, but Hayley is saved by a handsome and mysterious stranger we later learn is her protector/guardian Lucas, one of the Sevens (who are assigned to protect and help witches). The rest of the story is a mix of everyone trying to find her sister while keeping Hayley safe and teaching her how to use her powers which she didn't know she had.

I gave this book three stars because there's a few discrepancies, like it's billed as Adult Fantasy but feels more like YA/NA paranormal romance. There's definitely some adult aspects to this novel (like a couple steamy sex scenes), but then there are times when Hayley's behavior feels a bit young for an almost-30-year-old.

The originality of this world is a major plus for me. It feels like a fresh take on witches and demons, and the Sevens are an interesting addition to the mix. There are some aspects of this world that weren't explained well enough for me, so I'm hoping some of these questions will be answered in the next book.

The story started out a bit awkwardly. It was well written, but something about the story felt off. Things settled into place just before Hayley, Lucas, and the other Sevens head off for the cabins.

I loved that Hayley is portrayed as a strong character, but I didn't like how quickly she seemed to master her magic. I would have liked to see her struggle a bit more.

The relationship between her and Lucas also develops very quickly, but there's sort of an explanation for this that makes it more believable. Madbury is clearly a strong romance writer (to the extent their relationship sometimes overshadowed the other plot elements) who knows the balance between physical attraction and emotional needs. You feel like Hayley and Lucas really do want each other, not just sex.

Overall, this was a strong first book that has me wanting to read the second one. I recommend this book for anyone who loves witches, hot yet sensitive alpha males, and plots that have layers of mysteries for the characters to unravel.

Haley Quinlan isn't living what she would call an exciting life, but she is content with her all consuming job and keeping emotional entanglements at bay. That all changes when one evening her sister Penny is kidnapped and Haley's life is threatened by other worldly beings. Haley is thrust from her sheltered life into a new world full of demons, magic, and Lucas Turner. Lucas has been watching over Haley for three years (unbeknownst to her). He knows there is much more to Haley than meets the eye, but when he saves her life that night he is in for more than he bargained for as he learns how naive Hailey has been kept about her family's background. As they work together to find Penny the connection between them grows stronger as secrets work to keep them apart. For two people who have kept themselves closed off from the rest of the world, will they be willing to let in the one person who might be able to save them?

VERDICT is that this is the first in a new paranormal romance series that will have readers wanting more. Danger and forced proximity are our romance tropes here and they are played out expertly between Haley and Lucas. I was onboard for Haley and Lucas' adventure from the very beginning and you have to be because this novel moves fast with all the action taking place over nine days. The author successfully writes dual narratives that make both characters more complex and interesting as details of their pasts are revealed and they struggle to connect in the present. As the first book in a series, I would say we firmly land on a happy for now moment. As a romance enthusiasts I am secure in the knowledge that Haley and Lucas' love is real, but in this paranormal world danger lurks around every corner and we are left on a bit of a cliff hanger!

Haley and Lucas have great chemistry from the start. So much happens in the short time the story covers, but I am happy their romance isn’t rushed. There are consequences to their actions, which Lucas is well aware but Haley isn’t.

This story doesn’t pick up right after Spark of Shadows, even though it is next in the series. Spark of Shadows is listed as a prequel to the Sevens series, and you don’t need to read it to read Splintered Stars, but it does have a base history that helps you understand the world Rachel Madbury has built.

Lucas and his band of Sevens work well together. The Sevens themselves are a little mystical and their bond is deep. I enjoyed learning more about their inner workings.

Haley is a powerful witch, but she doesn’t know it. She catches on very fast and soon surprises everyone with what she can do. Haley is strong, emotional, and jumps into learning about her heritage with both feet.

I learned quite a bit from the characters as they grew. The mystery of why Haley’s mother sheltered her is entwined with the mystery of her sister’s kidnapping. The multiple viewpoints are written well, and I like how each chapter is subtitled with the person we hear from the most.

This series is promising to be good. There’s romance, mystery, witchcraft, and good storylines. I’m looking forward to the next book!

Personal Note:

I still want to know more about the demons and what they're up to, but I believe I will find out more as the series progresses.

I received an advance review copy for free (thank you, Book Sirens), and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was so good. It had me hooked within the first 20 pages. The only thing that kept me reading it in one sitting was the fact that I had to wake up for work.

Watching Haley, the most powerful witch ever born, learn about her powers, fight demons, and protect her friends was incredible. She's just a badass. I love strong, ambitious female leads and Haley was just that. Haley's journey to finding her true self through her magic, romance, and passion is so absorbing. I am excited to see what the next book brings for her (as well as for the other characters we met).

This book was the perfect mixture of romance, friendship, magic, and action. There was never a seen that bored me. I was always completely sucked in by the love, intrigued by the supernatural, or stressed by the action. From start to finish I was all-in: I screamed, I laughed, I blushed, and I cried.

Individually, and as a group, all the characters are incredible. The two main characters, Lucas and Haley, have a connection from the start. Watching their affection, and semi-forbidden love, blossom was so fun. Lucas is a part of the Seven. I loved meeting and learning about the other members of the Seven: Finch, Jack Asher, and Whit. I couldn't get enough of the connection and ease at which they protect, serve, and simply love one another. I don't have the words to describe how extraordinary the Sevens are or how perfectly Haley meshed.

Not to be dramatic, but I don't know how I can wait for the next book. It didn't even end on a cliff hanger, but I NEED MORE.

The paranormal romance I was looking for😍

Suspenful, intense, steamy, swoony and full of magic and surprises!

This book was captivating and beautiful! I loved how the romance, friendships and mysteries captured me from the very first page. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, I got another surprise. This world, the different powers and personalities of every character (especially Haley’s) plus the emotional roller coaster made this book remarkable!

I adored Haley! I loved how she wanted to fully embrace her identity as a witch and how she wanted to use her powers to the fullest. She was so brave and loving. I loved how she allowed others to protect her without doubting her own worth and how much she was capable of. Her journey to self discovery was so beautiful to read and I fell in love with how much she got to care about Lucas and the rest of the sevens.

Lucas 😍my sweet love😍he was so understanding and sweet, he was willing to sacrifice his own life for Haley. He believed in her like no one else, always encouraged her and protecting her, no matter if he had to lose it all. I loved how close he was with his brothers and the love he had for them. He was a real hero in all sense of the word.

Their relationship was literally out of this world, the closeness and intimacy they experienced was one of the most intense I’ve ever read because of the bond they had even before they spoke to each other and because of how dangerous it was for them to be together. That made the steamy scenes even more deep and emotional!

I am so in love with this book, the characters, the world building, the brotherhood and can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

All the stars to this book!

Thank you Rachel Madbury for gifting me the copy of this book!

Thank you BookSirens for an ARC of Splintered Stars in return for an honest review.

Yesterday morning I woke up and decided to read with a cup of coffee, I chose this out of my TBR list and then my day became a blur. I think I ate, I may have spoken to people, but I definitely didn’t get out of my pajamas because this book hooked me! I finished it in one sitting. And it was amazing! The first chapter is so intense with Haley’s sister being abducted right in front of her, that I needed answers and I read and read until I got some.

Haley and Lucas are the perfect pair to lead this fascinating story. They lean on each other in the most beautiful way. Her being a “green” witch and him being her guardian of the Seven gave them the perfecting starting point for an intense and soulmate kind of love.

The rest of the Seven that you meet are such great side characters, they all have their own heart wrenching stories that you love them just as much as the leads. I still have so much I want to know about this band of brothers, where is Marshall?! What made the legion pick them specifically?! What happened before this story that broke Asher?! But more than that who is Mouse and what is Haley going to do next with her newly discovered powers?! I finished this book begging for more, I absolutely can’t wait to read the second book.

This was a fantastic start to a series, just make sure you’re surrounded by food and water when you start this because nothing is going to tear you away from it, not even dehydration and an empty stomach.

Thank you Rachel Madbury, 5 bright stars to you and Splintered Stars!

Book Sirens gave me the opportunity to read an ARC of “Splintered Stars”, the first book in a new series called The Sevens by Rachel Madbury, in return for an honest review.

I hesitated for a long time whether to give the book two or three stars, but decided on three stars because the writing itself is good and would draw you in to the story, if… the idea had been explored to its fullest. The story is alternates between the points of view of the two protagonists, Haley and Lucas. Unfortunately the characters were lacking depth and consistency, at times Haley (a career-driven woman in her late twenties who wants to become a VP of a company when she is 35) is a fully-functioning adult, yet at times she acts immature and juvenile. Lucas, sweet though he may be, acts as a typical chauvinistic male, but not one of the 21st century, no, more like he was living in the 19th century. Both are rehashing the same subject over and over again.

So… 3 stars because the story gives the impression of being rushed, as a result of which it leaves the reader with many questions and sometimes even thinking ‘good heavens girl, think before you act!’. If the tale had been better developed and the characters better built, the book would have been so much more enjoyable. It is not a bad book, it is not a bad storyline, it is not bad world-building, it is not bad character building. It is a missed opportunity because the author truly does have a lot of potential.

I love everything paranormal and this book did not disappoint! It has the makings of a great paranormal book including suspense, adventure, mystery and love. I loved Lucas from the beginning and want Haley to be my sister. Lucas is a bit secretive from the beginning but once you read more about why, then you understand it's for Haley's safety. Haley would do anything to find her sister including going back to her past and reliving the worst day of her life.

It was an incredible book and you can't help but love the characters..except for the demons. I like how it switches points of view from Haley to Lucas. It helps to know what the characters are thinking at that time and it helps to get to know them better.

Each of The Sevens have different personalities but you love them all the same. These personalities make them click and are like brothers. They might not be blood brothers but they are the closest to family one will get. The Sevens not only protect their charges, they also protect each other.

This book makes you want to read more and not stop until the end. I can't wait to read what happens in the next book!

This book drops you right into the action as Haley Quinlan and her sister Penny are attacked and Penny is kidnapped. When a mysterious stranger holds her back from trying to save her sister and ultimately getting herself killed, Haley is at first furious with him. But realizing there was nothing else she could have done, Haley goes with Lucas to his home to plan her Penny's rescue. Haley learns the hard way that she is a witch, and quite a powerful one. Lucas, as her protector and part of the Seven, must teach her the history and practice simple spells with her. But after they rescue Penny, will Haley decide to stay in her new life, or go back to her normal boring innocent life before she knew that she was the most powerful witch in her generation?
Lucas is such a great character. Even before they got close, he's willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe and teach her what she needs to learn about her history no matter the danger to himself. I'm so excited this is a series! I can't wait to find out what happens next! Thank you to Rachel Madbury for the opportunity to read this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The views and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

This is the first book I have read from Rachel Madbury, so I really did not know what to expect. The book was OK, although I have to admit that I am not a big fan of the author’s writing style. The premise of the book was very interesting (a powerful witch who is unaware of what she is) but I think that the delivery did suffer from a lot of nonsensical situations. One could point out that since the book is catalogued as adult fantasy, nonsensical is allowed. I happen to think that even in a fantasy world things should still be believable, as a result of strong world and character building. At times, it felt like neither were well developed. If one can overlook that, there is a lot of sexual tension (that dragged a bit too long), a couple of hot sex scenes with a hot guy (of course),who also happens to be VERY sensitive (also a bit overdone), and a number of other hot guys all of whom share a connection (they all can “feel” each other). That part, if anything else, was very creepy...The book is a also cliffhanger, which is my least favorite type of ending. I am not sure I will read the second book in the series.

I'm very conflicted on how I feel about Splintered Stars to be honest. First of all, I haven't read a book about a witch in some time, and that aspect was a good one as Haley is a girl who is coming into her very strong powers since she's the greatest wish born ever, as she can use all 4 elements whereas other witches may have one or two. She has a protector named Lucas who has been watching over her for the past 3 years, and it's after Haley's sister is kidnapped that he's coming out of the shadows as she's coming into her own but doesn't know it. I'm very fascinated about the fact that Haley can use all the elements, but there wasn't a lot of that highlighted which frustrated me. This story was all about these two falling into instalove, and a bunch of drama from Haley's emotions which got on my last nerve. She's supposed to be a grown woman, but with all of this drama queen business, she felt like a teenager in my opinion. I'm not going to lie, I'm intrigued to see what's up next, so I'll be waiting for the next book. Please remember all of these views are only my opinion, and not fact so I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you decide for yourselves!

The first thing I want to say is that, on my electronic reader, the cover of this book is amazing. Beautiful illustration so kudos to the artist! The beginning of the book was filled with lots of action which slowed down somewhat while Haley learns who she really is - an important witch who is being guarded by a group of werewolves (the Seven) who are protecting her against demons, and possibly against her own mother (a head witch)! At times, I felt the long conversations with Lucas dragged a bit, but I was glad I persevered since the ending was filled with action and revelations about Haley (one very special witch) and her family. At times, it seemed to me that Haley acted younger and more immature than she was in the story. Yet, maybe it was being older that helped her through the trauma of finding out her long held family secrets. The Seven are important characters in the book, and I am assuming each will take on importance in the following books - only guessing. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I wonder what happens next for Haley and her Seven!

This is a good first book for the series and I enjoyed the ending particularly. The story moves along at a steady pace, although a bit slow for me personally and at times I found myself skimming to speed it up just a bit. It gave me just enough of a tease to make me want to come back for the second book though.

Lucas is one of the Seven and is sent to protect Haley under the instructions of the council. When Haley and Lucas first meet it’s a chaotic mess of action and tension. Secrets make themselves known and the world around them quickly changes.

The chemistry between Lucas and Haley is an instant sweet romantic pull. As the story moved along I found myself becoming deeper involved with the Legion, which leads to meeting more members of the seven. The banter between the characters is fun while still taking their roles seriously.

Splintered Stars is the first book one in the seven series and follows the prequel Spark of Shadows. While the prequel isn’t exactly necessary for book one, I do suggest reading it as it will lay a good foundation of what’s to come.

SPLINTERED STARS is Book One of Rachel Madbury’s new The Sevens series, and it’s my kind of paranormal saga.

The Sevens are the chosen who protect the witches from the demons who are always after their power. This separate world exists alongside our normal world in the present.

Like heroine Haley Quinlan, who knows nothing about this separate world, we learn in real time as our hero Lucas Turner shares information on a “need to know” basis.

Madbury starts the book by dropping us into the action from the first page. The remainder of the book feels like a fast drive along a winding mountain road — ups and downs, twists and turns.

The adventure fits in this single title, but there is a bit of a cliffhanger in that one goal is not finished by the end of the book. This makes me hopeful that I’ll see Haley and Lucas again in subsequent titles.

"This woman undid him, and she didn’t even know it. Every gorgeous detail of her carved out a new hollow inside him, filled it with awe and need and a desperation he feared would never relent."

Haley leads a very precise, measured and guarded life, in other words she's a certified loner. She's been holding back and doesn't truly understand why until she's forced out of her shell by the cold hard truth of who she actually can choose to be, a powerful witch.

Lucas was trapped in a world with purpose and honor but no hope and zero choice.

This is their story. A story of a love forbidden, of self discovery, hope and acceptance.

The story and plot were engaging. At times it read slow but then it would pick up. I am only questioning why of he watched her for three years, why he never felt anything for her before. That left me wondering.

I received a free copy of this book and I voluntarily reviewed it.

This book engages the readers attention at the very beginning and doesn’t let go even once you’ve read the last page. The emotions of the characters are so well defined that you can actually feel what they are going through. The life choice of being selected and accepting the life as a “Seven”, protecting their charge from whatever threat occurs is their primary purpose. Usually their charge is a witch.

Lucas had been guarding Haley for three years from a distance. He hadn’t seen any evidence of her being a witch. One night demons attacked her and her sister. He saved Haley, his charge but, the demons managed to kidnap her sister Penny. Do they get Penny back? Why was Lucas, a Seven, guarding what seemed to be a human without the powers of a witch? You will find the answer in this action packed book. A great read bringing a new concept into the world of witches.

Well blow me over with a feather! What a way to start a series. I was left gasping by the end of the book, in a good way. What started off as a "normal" story, I knew to expect Witches and their protectors, but I was totally unprepared for a complex, yet well executed mystery as well! What a ride! Hailey and Lucas are wonderful characters, their lives not quite what it seems on the surface and how they adjust to their new situation has me enthralled. The brotherhood of the Seven is beautiful to read about and I'm silently in love with Jack, who even with his brash personality, is someone I'd love to have in my corner. The plot is intricate, the mystery complex and the characters grow more compelling as the story unfolds. It is a really heartening book that had my pulse racing on quite a few occasions! Terrific read, book 2 can't come fast enough!

This book was pure witchy fun. I'm from New England, so all of the location mentions and the local lore caught my attention. The plot was exciting, the world-building superb, and the characters were rich and interesting. I was afraid with so many on the Sevens team I would get confused, but they were each so distinct and made me look forward to each of them getting a book. I fell in love with Lucas immediately; alpha with a soft heart? I'm in. And Haley is a really cool MC, but my favorite part about this book was the prose. Rachel Madbury's writing is just so pretty! She knows how to turn a phrase and her imagery was gorgeous. Another thing that caught my attention was how each chapter ended with the perfect hook. It really was a page-turner! If you're looking for a witchy, action-packed, PNR--check this one out!
