Greg Iles wartime thriller, "Black Cross" is set in a fictionalised Nazi concentration camp in the heart of the Third Reich run by an SS doctor whose experiments bear a close resemblance to those of the infamous Josef Mengele. The camp harbours a weapon so lethal it could wipe out an entire invasion force. It is January 1944, the D-Day landings on the Normandy coast just five months away and a plan has been hatched, with the knowledge and consent of the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, to commit an act of unimaginable horror in the name of peace. Those charged with carrying out the plan under the direction of the British SOE – Special Operations Executive – are an American doctor, a German nurse, a Zionist killer and a young Jewish widow, the most unlikely group ever assembled to carry out a wartime operation. The odds of success are impossible, but their grit and determination to succeed, despite the terrible consequences if they do, just might give the world hope for victory against the Nazis.
Despite the length of "Black Cross" – some 641 pages – it somehow manages to be a page-turner all the way. Some characters are real – Winston Churchill is one example – some are not but they are all interesting, even the Nazis and Greg Iles makes it easy to decide who you should root for. The subject matter is, of course, not for the faint hearted and although at times the author pushes the boundaries of credibility, he makes the story seem at least possible, especially given the period in which it is set. One needs to understand that this is historical fiction, not historical fact. Although an American, the author has skilfully described British scenes realistically and the dialogue of the English and Scottish characters is remarkably accurate. "Black Cross" is historical fiction at its best.

This is my first Greg Iles book but it proved to be such a riveting read I can comfortably say that I will be picking up all of his work in the future. From the first few pages I could tell this was going to be good but I wasn't expecting to be hooked quite so much.
The nuts and bolts of the story isn't wildly different to many novels I've read before; a couple of misfits are required to pull off an impossible task that they're not wholly equipped to deal with. The difference here was there were large portions of this book were set inside a fictitious concentration camp in Germany which gave a perspective from those trapped, those who run it and those who test on subjects and the people caught in a rock and a hard place assisting the testers. It's pretty grim reading at times but you see the word concentration camp you don't thing rainbows and unicorns. It's weaved with the action side enough to never truly depress you and hate humankind.
The blend of action, historical plotting, emotional scenes which probably pale in comparison to some which actually took place in real life made this a real roller coaster of emotions and such that I couldn't put it down. My only criticism would be the ending didn't feel totally satisfying and a little rushed but it didn't detract from what went before and there were external factors which slowed my reading right at the end.
This is well worth a read and will appeal to many different people and tastes and I think I may have found a gem in this author. I'll be starting some more of his soon enough.

সলিড ফাইভ স্টার। দুর্দান্ত একটা স্পাই থ্রিলার। শুরু থেকেই বইটার প্রত্যেকটা অংশ উপভোগ করেছি। আর কি লাগে?
বইয়ের কাহিনী হল হিটলার সাহেবের লোকজন বিষাক্ত গ্যাস নিয়ে আক্রমণ করার প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছে। এদিক থেকে মিত্র বাহিনী দুজনকে পাঠাল গ্যাস তৈরির ল্যাব প্লাস ক্যাম্প গুঁড়িয়ে দিয়ে হিটলারকে একটা বার্তা দেয়ার জন্য। দুই এজেন্টের মিশন সফল করে বেঁচে ফেরার সম্ভাবনা শূণ্যের কোঠায়। কিন্তু বেঁচে ফিরতেই হবে ওদেরকে। ওরা কি পারবে?
অনেকেই আই এম পিলগ্রীমের মত বই খোঁজেন। পিলগ্রীম তো মডার্ন এসপিওনাজ থ্রিলার। কিন্তু ব্ল্যাক ক্রস দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের প্রেক্ষাপটে হলেও কোনো অংশেই কাহিনীর দিক দিয়ে কম নয়। বরং কিছু দিক দিয়ে এগিয়েই। কাহিনী সংক্ষেপ দিয়ে বইটাকে বিচার করলে পাঠক চরম ভুল করবেন। শুরুটা একটু ধীরগতির মনে হতে পারে। কাহিনীর ডেভেলপমেন্টের জন্য এটা দরকার ছিল। বড় পরিসরের বই। এরপর এই বইয়ে রয়েছে প্রত্যেক পদে পদে রয়েছে টানটান উত্তেজনা, অনিশ্চয়তা, দ্বন্দ্ব, মিশন, ট্রেনিং- সবমিলিয়ে মনে হবে পাঠক নিজেই কোনো মিশনের প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছে বা অংশগ্রহণ করছে। আর মাঝেমধ্যে ছোটখাটো টুইস্ট তো আছেই। গ্রেগ আইলসের গল্প বলার ধরনটা দারুণ লেগেছে।
আরেকটা ব্যাপার হল, এই বইয়ে নিখুঁতভাবে উঠে এসেছে জার্মানির কনসেনট্রেশন ক্যাম্পে আটকে থাকা ইহুদীদের ওপর নেমে আসা নির্যাতনের দৃশ্য। ওদের অসহায়ত্ব, আশা, প্রতিশোধের আকাঙ্ক্ষা। নাৎসি অফিসারদের জানোয়ারের মত আচরণও ভালোভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন লেখক। এসব ব্যাপার হৃদয় ছুঁয়ে গেছে, সৃষ্টি করেছে হাহাকার।
অনুবাদক ইমতিয়াজ আজাদকে ধন্যবাদ দারুণ বইটা অনুবাদ করার জন্য। অসাধারণ অনুবাদে পরিস্থিতিগুলো ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন তিনি। দরকারে জার্মানও ব্যবহার করেছেন বাংলা অর্থসহ। উনার পরিশ্রমের জন্য কৃতজ্ঞ।
পরিশেষে সকল পাঠকদের জন্য পড়ার আহ্বান জানালাম দারুণ এই বইটি।

Book-reader's Bias: Due to my recent non-fiction readings on WWII heroic men of science material, I was probably a bit more apt to be underwhelmed by the fictional portrayals of same in this book than I might have otherwise been. It's an interesting adventure story with decent verisimilitude, oh and also science.
Gas! Gas! Quick Boys!
My 11th grade history class (Modern Euro) was a pretty lackluster affair. However, it did introduce me to one of the most memorable and powerful reflections on war I've come across to date, Wilfred Owen's poem “Dulce et Decorem Est.” (If you haven't read the poem before, go do it — in addition to being great, it's only four stanzas long, so you have no good excuse).
So, what does a poem from the First World War have to do with a piece of WWII historical fiction? Actually, quite a bit. The dread and the trauma from WWI was still very present for (among others) the book's protagonist and pacifist doctor/scientist, Mark McConnell , whose veteran father never truly recovered from his encounters with chemical warfare. This is among the book's “historical artifacts”; Londoners (below) were taught protocols and drilled for potential attacks in the densely populated metropolis.
Geneva Protocol be damned, no one was feeling particularly confident that chemical weapons were being taken out of play. A nice little Slate article led me to the four posters (below) intended to help with identifying the effects/presence of gases.
Of the gases above (according to the story), phosgene was considered the heavy hitter. However, the life-altering plot twist in Black Cross comes with the discovery by the British that Reich scientists had discovered how to produce and make use of the deadlier gases, sarin , and soman .
I'm Blinding You With Science!
I don't know how you guys went about studying for physiology and such in your college years, but, for me, it involved a lot of water coloring.* So, since you're probably asking yourselves what the BFD is about the aforementioned gases, allow me to illustrate (both figuratively and literally).
See those little blue dotty things? Those are nice little synaptic vesicles chock full of a nice little neurotransmitter called acetylcholine (ACh) . ACh is very exciting stuff...no, I'm serious, it binds to its little receptors (on muscle fibers in this case) and opens the gate for sodium, and there's an action potential, and your muscles contract etc. (I numbered the steps in my little diagram, so you can work out the details for yourselves).
What my drawing fails to depict is what usually goes down in the aftermath; namely, that a sexy little enzyme called Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) shows up. At first glance, you might think that AChE is a bit of a Debbie downer— its job is to clean up the party started by our exciting pal ACh. However, without AChE there to do its thing, those channels become desensitized to ACh and this really shuts things down.
So, if for some reason AChE were to be held back, the word “inhibited” comes to mind, these neuromuscular transmissions, helpful for things like breathing, would fail...and you're gonna have a bad time. And, guess what sarin, soman and organophosphates are all about?
If for some strange reason you prefer to get your “science” from the CDC, rather than some book-reading weirdo on the internet, see below.

If you're looking to kill stuff, then nervous system disruption is a pretty good tactic. Thus, German chemist, Gerhard Schrader, tasked with finding a better insecticide, was tinkering about with organophosphates. When he sprayed some methyl-isopropoxyl-fluorophosphine oxide on a patch of leaf lice not only did the bugs bite the dust, but soon (coming into contact with the aforementioned liquid) he and his lab assistants were going blind and twitching about.
The Nazi powers that be, however, had applications other than crop preservation in mind. Otto Ambros † (who, like Schrader, was employed at IG Farben) was soon overseeing the production and stockpiling of poisonous gases which (you guessed it) were, of course, tested on the Nazi equivalent of vermin — concentration camp inmates.
Book? What Book?
So, yeah, Greg Isles has a whole story constructed around what was, and what might have been given the scientific scenario described. It's a good book, but, like I said, I'm probably more of a non-fiction girl myself.

* What? It's hard to make yourself stare at all those receptors and chemical pathways. Bonus tip: The best way to memorize enzyme names is by pretending they're spells from Harry Potter. I literally flicked my wrist in wand-like motions while taking my neuro exams. Sure I looked crazy, but I also still remember Phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (obviously, the “spell” for converting norepinephrine to epinephrine). So, if that comes up in life, I'm totally ready for it.
† Bonus bit of breaking news (well, news to me) re. Ambros: in developing an antidote to Sarin guess what he cooked up? Need a hint? It was a favorite among those suffering from morning sickness for a while. If you guessed Thalidomide then you deserve a gold star (the sticker kind, not the Nazi sorting system paraphernalia).

Having read nearly all books written by this author this story was unique due to the time period and plot. Just about every book Greg has written takes place in contemporary Mississippi with interesting characters, tons of plot twists and rapid fire momentum. Here he takes the reader to WW II with an American scientist and Jewish guerrilla war soldier. And while well written and paced it pales in comparison to his other stories.

WOW!
If you like action the action and adventure in a James Rollins Novel, the historical accuracy of Tim Powers and a tightly woven complex plot like in Robert Ludlum's books, you'll love this one. It's strange, the books I like the most, get the shortest reviews? (funny huh?)
The story is set in WWII England and Germany. The main character, a Doctor and Scientist who is also a pacifist, and one of the Allies leading experts on poison gas gets recruited for a risky mission with little chance of success and many unpleasant and painful ways to die. He's partnered up with a Jew from Palestine, but born in Germany who's an expert guerilla fighter. They parachute behind enemy lines in a desperate play to save countless troops from Hitler’s war machine in the coming invasion. Along the way the encounter the true evil that lurks in the hearts of men and the unspeakable horrors that they have wrought, and they find courage, nobility and dignity in the most beaten and defeated places.
I'd love to go into detail about this book but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I loved the strong female characters who proved that there are more kinds of strong than brute strength and that courage is not gender specific. I loved the male characters as well, maniacal sadistic villains, noble but determined heroes and treacherous and desperate leaders alike.
The story started just right and moved fast enough to keep me reading an engaged, but slow enough for me to really learn to like Jonas Stern and Mike McConnell, and fall in love with the Anna Cass. The pace built just right, tension and suspense first, followed by lots of action, and if you stay for the epilogue, you will be rewarded with a very sweet ending. (I only cried a little bit).
Great read, highly recommended.
Warnings
This story involves the worst of the Nazis doing the worst of things imaginable to the kindest of gentle people, wolves terrorizing all around them. Greg Ilse states that he stuck to actual events as he shaped his concentration camp and worse, that the horrible events depicted in his story pale in comparison to actual events. Even so, there are some heartbreaking and soul shaking things in this book. It is a fictional story, about a terrible but fictional place that mirrors actual history in many, terrible ways.
I believe this book is written showing proper respect to the victims of Nazi Germany, allowing some glimpses of the truth of what happened, and above all allowing those touched by the Hitler Evil to maintain their dignity. Though difficult to think about, the scenes are not graphic or gratuitous in any way, save to further this wonderful story. Still, if you are sensitive to such things, violence delivered on women and children, as well as men, that is much worse than a simple beating or gunshot wound, take care when reading this book. Even though these events were known to have happened because of documentaries and books I've read, etc. They still have the power to shock and dismay...as they should.
I also have to give loud cheers and applause to Dick Hill's job as narrator. He had wonderful voices and accents, and sounded just like a young Dr. from Alabama should. The Audiobook was one of the better audiobooks I've heard. It's just a good read all around.

I'd love to go into detail about this book but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I loved the strong female characters who proved that there are more kinds of strong than brute strength and that courage is not gender specific. I loved the male characters as well, maniacal sadistic villains, noble but determined heroes and treacherous and desperate leaders alike.
The story started just right and moved fast enough to keep me reading an engaged, but slow enough for me to really learn to like Jonas Stern and Mike McConnell, and fall in love with the Anna Cass. The pace built just right, tension and suspense first, followed by lots of action, and if you stay for the epilogue, you will be rewarded with a very sweet ending. (I only cried a little bit).
Great read, highly recommended.
Warnings
This story involves the worst of the Nazis doing the worst of things imaginable to the kindest of gentle people, wolves terrorizing all around them. Greg Ilse states that he stuck to actual events as he shaped his concentration camp and worse, that the horrible events depicted in his story pale in comparison to actual events. Even so, there are some heartbreaking and soul shaking things in this book. It is a fictional story, about a terrible but fictional place that mirrors actual history in many, terrible ways.
I believe this book is written showing proper respect to the victims of Nazi Germany, allowing some glimpses of the truth of what happened, and above all allowing those touched by the Hitler Evil to maintain their dignity. Though difficult to think about, the scenes are not graphic or gratuitous in any way, save to further this wonderful story. Still, if you are sensitive to such things, violence delivered on women and children, as well as men, that is much worse than a simple beating or gunshot wound, take care when reading this book. Even though these events were known to have happened because of documentaries and books I've read, etc. They still have the power to shock and dismay...as they should.
I also have to give loud cheers and applause to Dick Hill's job as narrator. He had wonderful voices and accents, and sounded just like a young Dr. from Alabama should. The Audiobook was one of the better audiobooks I've heard. It's just a good read all around.

১৯৪৪ সাল। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ চলছে। জার্মানির পতন প্রায় অনিবার্য। মিত্রবাহিনী ধীরে ধীরে গুটিয়ে আনছে জাল। কিন্তু এখনো ফুয়েরার হিটলারের হাতে আরো একটা তাস বাকি আছে৷ আর সেটা হলো পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী নার্ভ গ্যাস সোমান; যার কোড নেম ব্ল্যাক ক্রস। সোমান এমন এক ভয়ঙ্কর মারণগ্যাস, যা বাতাসের চেয়ে বেশ ভারী এবং অতি অল্প সময়ে অনেক সংখ্যক মানুষকে মেরে ফেলার ক্ষমতা রাখে। স্বয়ং হাইনরিখ হিমলারের তত্ত্বাবধানে জার্মানির বেশ কয়েকটা ল্যাবে প্রস্তুত হচ্ছে এই বিপুল পরিমাণ ব্ল্যাক ক্রস, যা যেকোন সময় যুদ্ধের মোড় ঘুরিয়ে দেয়ার জন্য প্রয়োগ করা হয়ে পারে মিত্রবাহিনীর ওপর। এই ব্যাপারে যদি শীঘ্রই কোন পদক্ষেপ নেয়া না যায়, কি ঘটবে তা বলা যায় না।
তরুণ আমেরিকান ডাক্তার মার্ক ম্যাককনেল রিসার্চ পারপাজে তখন অবস্থান করছে ইংল্যান্ডে। বিষাক্ত গ্যাস বিশ্লেষণের ব্যাপারে এই তরুণের জ্ঞান একদম বিশেষজ্ঞ পর্যায়ের। তাই হয়তো তাকেই একটা অদ্ভুত ও একইসাথে বিপজ্জনক মিশনের অংশ করে নেয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন ব্রিগেডিয়ার ডাফ স্মিথ। আর এই মিশনের আরো একটা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চাবি হিসেবে তিনি সংযুক্ত করলেন বেপরোয়া ইহুদি যুবক জোনাস স্টার্নকে। মিশনটা হলো, জার্মানির প্রত্যন্ত টটেনহাউসেন কনসেনট্রেশন ক্যাম্পে প্রবেশ করে কালেক্ট করতে হবে জার্মান সোমানের কিছু স্যাম্পল। সেই সাথে ব্রিটিশ নার্ভ গ্যাস প্রয়োগ করে মৃত্যুপুরীতে পরিণত করতে হবে ক্যাম্পটাকে।
প্যাসিফিস্ট (অহিংসামন্ত্রে দীক্ষিত) মানসিকতার ডাক্তাএ মার্ক ম্যাককনেল শুরু থেকে এই মিশনের বিরোধিতা করলেও তাকে রাজি হতেই হয় একটা সময়। দুই বিপরীত স্বভাবের তরুণ জোনাস স্টার্ন ও মার্ক ম্যাককনেল পাড়ি জমায় অন্ধকার জার্মানির টটেনহাউসেন কনসেনট্রেশন ক্যাম্পের দিকে যেখানে হিটলারের নাজি বাহিনী বন্দিদের ওপর চালাচ্ছে অকথ্য নির্যাতন ও হত্যালীলা। এই মিশনে ওদের সাহায্যকারী হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হয় অ্যানা ক্যাস নামের এক মানবতাবাদী নার্স ও কয়েকজন উদ্বাস্তু পোলিশ।
এদিকে টটেনহাউসেন যেন পৃথিবীর বুকেই এক টুকরো নরক। বিকৃতমস্তিষ্ক ডাক্তার ও ক্যাম্পের কমান্ড্যান্ট ক্লস ব্র্যান্ড তার অধীনের এসএস ও এসডি সদস্যদের নিয়ে প্রতিনিয়ত নির্যাতন চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে ক্যাম্পে বন্দি ইহুদি ও অন্যান্য জাতের মানুষদের ওপর। ক্যাম্পে উৎপাদিত বিষাক্ত গ্যাসের পরীক্ষা চালানো হচ্ছে ওদের ওপর গিনিপিগের মতো। আর এই টটেনহাউসেনেরই দুই বন্দি র্যাচেল জ্যানসেন ও এক ইহুদি জুতার কারিগরের মধ্যে গড়ে উঠলো অদ্ভুত এক সম্পর্ক।
ম্যাককনেল ও স্টার্ন। একজন ডাক্তার ও একজন ইহুদি যোদ্ধা। মাত্র দু'জন মানুষের ওপরেই যেন নির্ভর করছে প্রায় অসম্ভব এই মিশন। টটেনহাউসেন কনসেনট্রেশন ক্যাম্পে কি ওরা সফলভাবে অপারেশন চালাতে পারবে? ওরা কি পারবে অত্যাচারী ফুয়েরার অ্যাডলফ হিটলার ও হাইনরিখ হিমলারকে কঠিন একটা জবাব দিতে? নাকি জার্মানির বুকেই সমাধি রচিত হবে এই আমেরিকান ডাক্তার ও ইহুদি যোদ্ধার? বাড়তে লাগলো এই অপারেশনের মাস্টারমাইন্ড ব্রিগেডিয়ার ডাফ স্মিথের দুশ্চিন্তা। আর দুশ্চিন্তা বাড়াটাই তো স্বাভাবিক।
পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়াঃ চমৎকার একটা হিস্টোরিক্যাল থ্রিলারের সাথে কেটে গেলো আমার কয়েকটা দিন। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ কেন্দ্রিক যেকোন কাহিনি আমার অত্যন্ত পছন্দের জিনিস। আর সেটা যদি হয় দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের ওপর বেজ করে লেখা কোন হিস্টোরিক্যাল থ্রিলার, তাহলে তো কথাই নেই। আমেরিকান লেখক গ্রেগ আইলস-এর 'ব্ল্যাক ক্রস' তেমনই একটা বই। লেখক তাঁর এই বইয়ে পাঠককে নিয়ে গেছেন সেই ১৯৪৪ সালের নাজি অধ্যুষিত জার্মানির টটেনহাউসেন কনসেনট্রেশন ক্যাম্পে। দুই তরুণকে যেখানে দেখা যায় প্রায় অসম্ভব একটা মিশন নিয়ে কাজ করতে।
'ব্ল্যাক ক্রস'-এ যে জিনিসটা আমার সবচেয়ে ভালো লেগেছে সেটা হলো, গ্রেগ আইলস এখানে একদম প্রোসিডিউরালভাবে ধীরে ধীরে গল্পটা সাজিয়েছেন। 'ধর তক্তা, মার পেরেক' টাইপ কোন তাড়াহুড়া তাঁর গল্প বলার ধরণের মধ্যে ছিলো না। উপন্যাসের ১৫০ পৃষ্ঠা পর্যন্ত কাহিনি কিছুটা স্লো মনে হলেও ধীরে ধীরে গতিশীলতা লাভ করেছে ক��হিনি। বিশেষ করে টটেনহাউসেন ক্যাম্পের বর্ণনার জায়গাগুলো যেন আমাকে সত্যিই ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলো দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধকালীন সেই ভয়াবহ অস্থির সময়টাতে। গা শিউরে উঠেছে বন্দিদের ওপরে করা অত্যাচারের ঘটনাগুলো পড়ে। আর ঠিক এখানেই গ্রেগ আইলস সফল বলে মনে করি আমি।
গল্পের বুনন আর গল্প বলার ধরণ চমৎকার লেগেছে। লেখক খুঁটিনাটি কোনকিছুই হালকা করে দেখেননি ও দেখাননি। ডিটেইলিং-এর ব্যাপারে পূর্ণ মনোযোগ ছিলো তাঁর। গ্রেগ আইলস পাঠককে ধরে রাখতে জানেন, তা আমি 'ব্ল্যাক ক্রস' শেষ করে নির্দ্বিধায় বলতে পারি।
এই উপন্যাসের প্রধান দুই চরিত্র মার্ক ম্যাককনেল ও জোনাস স্টার্ন-কে আমার ভালো লেগেছে। সেই সাথে ভালো লেগেছে এসএস মেজর উলফগ্যাঙ স্কর্নার-কে। র্যাচেল জ্যানসেন, অ্যানা ক্যাস ও অ্যারিয়েল উইটয চরিত্রগুলোর চরিত্রায়নও অসাধারণ লেগেছে 'ব্ল্যাক ক্রস'-এ। বড়সড় কলেবরের উপন্যাস পড়ার ক্ষেত্রে অনেক সময়ই সমাপ্তি পছন্দ হয় না, কিন্তু 'ব্ল্যাক ক্রস'-এর সমাপ্তিটাও ভালো লেগেছে আমার। অবশ্য শুরু থেকে লেখক এমনভাবে গল্প বলছিলেন যে শেষটা এমন হওয়াই যৌক্তিক ছিলো বলে মনে হয়েছে।
আমি সম্ভবত এর আগে ইমতিয়াজ আজাদের রূপান্তর পড়িনি। 'ব্ল্যাক ক্রস'-ই আমার পড়া তাঁর প্রথম রূপান্তরকর্ম। বেশ সহজ ও সাবলীল ছিলো তাঁর রূপান্তর। ঝরঝরে হওয়ার কারণে বইটা পড়ে বেশ শান্তি পেয়েছি। বেশ কিছু টাইপিং মিস্টেক চোখে পড়েছে। বিশেষ করে, ভূত-কে ফূত লেখা হয়েছে প্রায় সব জায়গাতেই। আশা করি পরবর্তী এডিশনে এই ভুলগুলো ঠিক করে নেয়া হবে।
আদনান আহমেদ রিজন-এর করা বিষয়ভিত্তিক প্রচ্ছদটা মোটামুটি ভালোই লেগেছে আমার। আর 'ব্ল্যাক ক্রস'-এর প্রোডাকশন কোয়ালিটি বরাবরের মতোই চিরকুট সুলভ নান্দনিক ছিলো।
হিস্টোরিক্যাল থ্রিলার ভালোবাসেন এমন পাঠকদের কাছে হয়তো ভালোই লাগবে 'ব্ল্যাক ক্রস'। পড়ে দেখতে পারেন।

দীর্ঘ কিন্তু উপভোগ্য একটা যাত্রা পাড়ি দেবার পর শরীরে এক ধরণের অবসাদ চলে আসে। ঠিক সেরকমই মনে হচ্ছে ব্ল্যাক ক্রস শেষ করবার পর। ৫৪৪ পৃষ্ঠার বই তিনদিনে গোগ্রাসে গেলার ফলে এরকম কিছুটা হবেই। তবে অবসাদ আনয়নে দ্রুততার সাথে পড়ার চেয়ে বেশি ভূমিকা গল্পের। কী নেই! দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের নখ-কামড়ানো কূটনীতি, বীরত্ব আর ত্যাগের অবিস্মরণীয় নমুনা, দুর্দান্ত কিছু চরিত্র, উত্তেজনায় ঠাসা অ্যাকশন দৃশ্য আর সবশেষে একটা সন্তোষজনক পরিসমাপ্তি।
বইটা যতটা না রণক্ষেত্রের বাঁচা-মরার, তার চেয়েও বেশি মনস্তাত্ত্বিক দ্বৈরথ মোকাবেলার। অবশ্য তাই বলে উত্তেজনার কমতি নেই কোথাও। পারফেক্ট পেজ-টার্নার যাকে বলে। মনস্তাত্ত্বিক দ্বৈরথ কেন বললাম তা ব্যাখ্যা দিতেই হয়- ভাল আর মন্দ, শুভ আর অশুভ, ন্যায়-অন্যায়ের প্রশ্নের উত্তর প্রতিটিই আপেক্ষিক। টেবিলের কোন প্রান্তে বসে আছেন তার ওপরেই নির্ভর করে আপনার দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি। মিলিটারি-থ্রিলার পড়তে এসে মানব মনের এহেন অন্ধকার আর আলোকিত দেখব আশা করিনি। তবে অপ্র্যাশিত হলেও অসাধারণ লেগেছে। জোনাস স্টার্ন জাতযোদ্ধা, ইহুদীদের মুক্তি আর জার্মানদের রক্ত ছাড়া কিছু বোঝে না। কিন্তু তার পাথুরে মনও জীবন-মৃত্যুর প্রশ্নের মুখে পড়ে দ্বিধাবোধ করতে শুরু করে একসময়। অন্যদিকে গান্ধীর অনুসারী, যুদ্ধ-বিমুখ ডাক্তার-কেমিস্ট মার্ক ম্যাককনেল কেনই বা প্রাণ রক্ষায় মানবহত্যাকে বেছে নিলো তা জানতে গিয়েও হোঁচট খেতে হয়েছে। জাতিতে জার্মান নার্স ফ্রাউলেন ক্যাস’র স্বদেশের বিরুদ্ধে কার্যক্রমের হেতুটা আবিষ্কার করে বিষণ্ণতায় আক্রান্ত হবে পাঠক। অনেকগুলো চরিত্রের জীবনের সাথে মিশে ছিলাম গত তিনটা দিন। তাদের ক্যাম্পের পাশবিক অত্যাচারের মুখে অসহায়ত্ব, সব হারাবার বেদনা আর ক্ষোভ একাকার করে ফেলছিল বারে বারে।
আর থ্রিলারের পাড় ভক্তদের জন্য অ্যাকশনের কমতি নেই এটা নিশ্চিত থাকুন। শেষ ১৫০ পৃষ্ঠা স্রেফ দৌড়ে বেড়াবেন দম আটকে। তবে আমার কাছে অ্যাকশনের চাইতে যুদ্ধে মানবজীবনের বিচিত্র ও কুৎসিততম রূপ দেখতে পাওয়াটাই পয়সা উসুলের কারণ হয়ে থাকবে। পছন্দের বইয়ের তালিকায় ব্ল্যাক ক্রস নিজের স্থান পাকাপোক্ত করে নিয়েছে এ কথা সানন্দে বলা যায়।
অনুবাদপ্রসঙ্গে--
ইমতিয়াজ আজাদ-এর সপ্তম অনুবাদের মান নিয়ে নতুন কিছুই বলার নেই। প্রতি বইয়ে নিজেই নিজেকে ছাড়িয়ে যাচ্ছেন। এরকম একজন অনুবাদক কেন এত কম অনুবাদ করেন, তা কোনো ভাবেই বোধগম্য নয়। তার কাছে অনুরোধ থাকলো, আরও বেশি বই অনুবাদ করার।
টুকিটাকি--
অভ্র থেকে বিজয় কনভার্ট-জনিত কারণে দুই-একটা শব্দ ওলট-পালট হয়ে গিয়েছিল। তবে কাহিনীতে তা ব্যাঘাত ঘটায়নি। শক্তপোক্ত বাইন্ডিং-এর বইটার মেকাপ চমৎকার হয়েছে। তবে প্রচ্ছদ আরও ভালো কিছু হতে পারতো। ফ্রন্ট কাভারে ট্যাঙ্কের সামনে বিশ্রামরত সৈন্যদলের সাথে কাহিনীর কোনো মিল নেই বিধায় খাপছাড়া লেগেছে।

দারুণ একটা বই, প্রায় ৬০০ পৃষ্ঠার এই বইটি পড়ার সময় প্রতিটি পৃষ্ঠা ভালো লেগেছে। স্পাই থ্রিলার এবিং বিশ্বযুদ্ধ নিয়ে বইগুলো বেশ ভালো লাগে, যদিও পড়া হয়েছে কম৷ কিন্তু অল্প যেগুলো পড়া হয়েছে তার মধ্যে বেশিরভাগ বইগুলোই দুর্দান্ত এবং এই বইটাও সেই সারির উপরের দিকে থাকবে। অনুবাদক ইমতিয়াজ আজাদ ভাইকে আলাদাভাবে ধন্যবাদ দিতেই হয় দারুণ এই বইটির অনুবাদ করার জন্য। দ্য ঈগল হ্যাজ ল্যাণ্ডেড পড়েছিলাম উনার অনুবাদেই এবং একই জনরার উপর দারুণ আরেকটা বই ছিল। ঐ বইটার কারনেই এই বইটা পড়ার শুরু থেকেই এক্সপেকটেশন বেশি ছিল এবং যার পুরোটাই উশুল। প্রায় এক সপ্তাহ নানা ব্যস্ততার মধ্যেও বিশাল সাইজের এই বইটা অল্প অল্প করে পড়ে শেষ করেছি এবং শেষ পর্যন্ত টানটান উত্তেজনা ছিল। সবমিলিয়ে আমার কাছে বইটা অনেক বেশি ভালো লেগেছে। বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময়কার স্পাই থ্রিলার কারো ভালো লাগলে বইটা পড়তে পারেন, আশা করি ভালো লাগবে।।

দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ! এই যুদ্ধ নিয়ে আপনার মস্তিষ্কে—ঠিক কতটুকু জ্ঞান আহরণ করা আছে? হয়তো আপনি সেলুলয়েডের পর্দায় অথবা অনেক সিনেমা বা টিভি সিরিজ দেখে থাকবেন—যেখানে চলা দীর্ঘ সংলাপের বিরতিতে যুদ্ধবিমানের হামলা, মাটিতে বোমা বর্ষণের স্ফুলিঙ্গ, সমুদ্রের ওপরে যুদ্ধজাহাজের তাণ্ডব আর গভীরে সাবমেরিনের কৌশলী পদক্ষেপের চিত্র বড্ড পরিচিত। এমন অভ্যস্ত করা বিষয়—চিত্তকে যতটা রোমহর্ষণ করে; তার চেয়েও বেশি করে নাৎসি (বইয়ে বানান—নাজি) বাহিনীর করা নির্দয় অত্যাচার। কী এমন করে তারা? কেন এত ক্ষোভ ইহুদি, পোলিশ, আমেরিকান, বিট্রিশ-সহ অন্যান্য জাতির প্রতি?
বলছি, তবে ধীরে। কারণ ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ লেখা হয়���ছে অত্যন্ত দক্ষ হাতে রয়েসয়ে। এই উপন্যাসের পটভূমি তৈরি হয়েছে ১৯৪৪ সালের দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ কেন্দ্র করে। যখন অ্যাডলফ হিটলারের নাৎসি বাহিনী প্রায় কোণঠাসা অবস্থায় জর্জরিত। তখন যুদ্ধের মোড় ও আত্মবিশ্বাস পুনর্জীবিতের উদ্দেশে যে ব্যক্তি হিটলারের পরে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভূমিকা রাখে সে হচ্ছে—হেনরিখ (হাইনরিখ) হিমলার। হিমলার, হিটলারের নাৎসি পার্টির মূল ব্যক্তি এবং ইহুদিদের স্বপ্নে—দুঃস্বপ্ন হয়ে হানা দেওয়া একজন এসএস নেতা। প্রবল বর্ণবাদী ও ইহুদি জাতিকে ধূলিসাৎ করার প্রবণতা হিমলারকে বানিয়েছে সাক্ষাৎ শয়তানে।
হিমলার যে ‘হলোকাস্ট’-এর সাথে সরাসরি অভিযুক্ত একজন সেটা আর বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না। ‘হলোকাস্ট’ এসেছে প্রাচীন গ্রিক শব্দ ‘হলোকাস্টন’ থেকে। যার অর্থ—আগুন দিয়ে হত্যা করা। এই হলোকাস্ট সম্পূর্ণ রূপে অর্পিত হয়েছে ইহুদিদের বিরুদ্ধে। মূলত ইহুদি নিধনের লক্ষ্যে হলোকাস্ট পরিচালিত হতো। তবে এই হলোকাস্ট থেকে আরও ভয়ংকর এক প্রক্রিয়া পদ্ধতি নিয়ে রচিত ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাস৷ সেই প্রক্রিয়া হলো এক প্রাণঘাতী গ্যাস। কোড নেম—ব্ল্যাক ক্রস!
ব্ল্যাক ক্রস কোড নেম হলেও শক্তিশালী এই নার্ভ গ্যাসটির নাম—সোমান। বাতাসের চেয়ে বেশি ভারী, দীর্ঘস্থায়ী, বিপুল ফলদায়ক, ধ্বংসাত্মক এই গ্যাস—ক্ষণিকের মধ্যে অসংখ্য মানুষ মেরে ফেলতে সক্ষম! স্বয়ং হিমলারের রক্ষণাবেক্ষণে জার্মানির বিভিন্ন ল্যাবে তৈরি করা হচ্ছে এই গ্যাস। সেইরকম একটি ল্যাব রয়েছে ‘টটেনহাউসেন’ নামক এক কনসেন্ট্রেশন ক্যাম্পে। এই ব্ল্যাক ক্রস গ্যাস উৎপাদনের মূল কারিগর টটেনহাউসেনে ক্যাম্পের কমাড্যান্ট ক্লস ব্রান্ড। নিষ্ঠুর, পিশাচ ও ধীমান এই ডাক্তারের অধীনে গ্যাস কার্যকারিতার গিনিপিগ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে ইহুদি-সহ অন্যান্য জাতির বন্দিদের। সেই বন্দিরা শুধুমাত্র গিনিপিগ হিসেবে নির্বাচিত হলেও, এসএস ও এসডি সেনাদের বাহুল্য উৎপীড়নের প্রতিনিয়ত মরণ শিকারে ভীতগ্রস্থ জীবন অতিবাহিত করতে হচ্ছে।

❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাসের টুইস্ট ও টার্ন প্রত্যাবর্তিত হয়েছে টটেনহাউসেন ক্যাম্প কেন্দ্র করে৷ নাৎসি বাহিনী ও হিমলারের তত্ত্বাবধানে থাকা এই ভয়ানক গ্যাসের প্রতিঘাতে ব্রিটিশ প্রেসিডেন্ট উইনস্টন চার্চিল ও বিগ্রেডিয়ার ডাফ স্মিথ মিলে ছক কষেছেন এক অভিনব ক্রিয়াসাধক কৌশলের। যে কৌশলের ওপর নির্ভর করে আছে যুদ্ধ জয়ের চাকা।
কী সেই কৌশল সেটা না বলি। তবে কৌশল সংঘটিত করার জন্য প্রয়োজন বিচক্ষণ, সাহসী, দূরদর্শী এমন কমান্ডো। সেই কমান্ডোর ভূমিকায় বিগ্রেডিয়ার স্মিথ বেছে নিয়েছেন তরুণ আমেরিকান ডাক্তার মার্ক ম্যাককনেল এবং নির্ভীক ইহুদি যুবক জোনাস স্টার্নকে। দুজন দুই মেরুর যোদ্ধা। কীভাবে তাদের এই মিশনে যুক্ত করানো হয়েছে এবং কোন প্রেক্ষিতে—সেই ঘটনা আরও দুর্দান্ত। একেবারে মোক্ষম চাল যাকে বলে অথবা সুযোগের সদ্ব্যবহার।
যাহোক, পুরো বিষয়টি যুদ্ধ বিষয়ভিত্তিক নিয়ে হলেও ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাসে প্রত্যকটি চরিত্রের নিখুঁত পর্যালোচনা ও মনস্তাত্ত্বিক ক্রিয়াকলাপ গভীরভাবে পর্যালোচনা করা হয়েছে। একে-তো দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ নিয়ে কাহিনি, তার ওপর ভীতিপ্রদ আর নৃশংস কার্যক্রমে ঠাসা এই উপন্যাস এক কথায়—অনবদ্য। শুধু বলব, এই রকম উপন্যাস বারবার পড়ার সৌভাগ্য সব পাঠকের হয় না। আর যারা যুদ্ধ নিয়ে বা যুদ্ধের আনুষঙ্গিক বিষয়বস্তু নিয়ে জানতে পছন্দ করেন এবং কনসেন্ট্রেশন ক্যাম্পে বন্দিদের প্রতি নাৎসি বাহিনীর প্রকৃত ঘটনার অবলোকন করতে ইতস্তত বোধ না করেন তবে এই বই নির্দ্বিধায় হাতে তুলে নিতে পারেন। প্রেম-ভালোবাসা, ভ্রাতৃত্ব বোধ, সন্তানের প্রতি নিবেদিত প্রাণ-সহ আরও অনেক অনুভূতি ঘিরে তৈরি হয়েছে ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাস।
➲ আখ্যান—
প্রায় শেষের দিকে চলে এসেছে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ। হার মেনে নেয়ার দ্বারপ্রান্তে চলে এসেছে জার্মান সেনাবাহিনী। মিত্রবাহিনীর জয় এখন সময়ের ব্যাপার মাত্র।
কিন্তু এখনও শেষ একটা তাস আছে হিটলারের হাতে। সোমান নামের এক ভয়ঙ্কর বিষাক্ত গ্যাস আবিষ্কার করেছে তার বিজ্ঞানীরা। টটেনহাউসেন নামের এক ক্যাম্পে প্রচুর পরিমাণে উৎপাদিত হচ্ছে এই গ্যাস, এর সাঙ্কেতিক নাম ব্ল্যাক ক্রস। হার যদি নিশ্চিত হয়, তবে এই গ্যাস ব্যবহারে বিন্দুমাত্র দ্বিধা করবেন না ফুয়েরার।
টটেনহাউসেন ধ্বংস করতে রওনা দিল জোনাস স্টার্ন আর মার্ক ম্যাককনেল নামের দুই কমান্ডো। বিমান থেকে ওরা প্যারাসুটে করে নেমে পড়লো জার্মানির অভ্যন্তরে।
➤ পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়া ও পর্যালোচনা—
❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাসের তাত্ত্বিক বিষয়বস্তু সীমাহীন। অর্থাৎ যুদ্ধকে কেন্দ্র করে যাবতীয় যত কার্যসিদ্ধির প্রয়োজনীয় লক্ষ করা যায়; সেই সব উপাদান এই উপন্যাসে বিদ্যমান। পর্যালোচিত সংলাপ এবং পারিপার্শ্বিক আবহের বর্ণনার সংমিশ্রণে উপন্যাসের প্রতিটি পাতা হয়েছে জীবন্ত। যেন কোনো ঘটনা, আমি জেগে থেকেও উপলব্ধি করতে পারছি বাধাহীনভাবে। উপন্যাসের যত গভীরে প্রবেশ করছি ততই জাগ্রত হয়েছে আমার বিক্ষিপ্ত স্মৃতিরা। আমি কখনও যুদ্ধে অংশগ্রহণ করিনি, নিজ চোখে অবলোকন করিনি নাৎসি বাহিনীর নারকীয়তা; তবুও আমি যেন উপন্যাসের প্রথম পাতা থেকে খুলে যাওয়া পোর্টালের মধ্যে দিয়ে অতিক্রম করে বিচরণ করেছি পুরোটা সময়। ভাগ্যের নাটকীয়তা আর যুদ্ধের নারকীয়তার মেলবন্ধনে সৃষ্টি ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ সত্যিকার অর্থে রোমাঞ্চকর এক উপন্যাস বটে।
● সূত্রপাত—
গল্পটা শুরু হয় বিমান দুর্ঘটনায় মারা যাওয়ার মার্কের দাদা-দাদিকে কেন্দ্র করে। মার্কের দাদা মার্ক ম্যাককনেল; যিনি টটেনহাউসেন ক্যাম্পে যাওয়া দুজন কমান্ডোর একজন। মারা যাওয়া মার্কের দাদির শেষকৃত্যে হাজির হয়ে র্যাবি লেইবোভিটয নামের এক ভদ্রলোক। যিনি মার্কের দাদার ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু। তিনি ও তৃতীয় মার্ক ম্যাককনেলের কথোপকথনের মধ্যে দিয়ে ঘটনা প্রসারিত হতে থাকে। মার্ক পেশায় একজন ডাক্তার ঠিক তার দাদার মতোই। কথোপকথন বিষয়বস্তু হচ্ছে দাদা মার্ক ম্যাককনেল অর্জিত ও বিবর্জিত যত ঘটনা নিয়ে। আর সেই ঘটনার পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ বর্ণনা দিতে হাজির হয়েছে লেইবোভিটয। প্রথমে উত্তম পুরুষে কাহিনি শুরু হলেও পরবর্তী লেখকের বর্ণনাতে পুরো ঘটনা বিবর্তিত হতে থাকে। শুরুতে আকর্ষিত হওয়ার মতো ঘটনা থাকার কারণে সাবলীলভাবে গল্প এগিয়ে যায়। শুরু থেকে কাহিনি ধীর গতিতে চলতে থাকা, ধৈর্য ও একাগ্রতা দিয়ে গল্পের আবহে ঘাপটি মেরে বসে থাকা গেলে—তবেই এই বইয়ের আসল মজা টের পাওয়া যাবে। আপনি যদি স্থিরচিত্তের হোন, তবেই বইটি নিয়ে বসুন।

লেখক গ্রেগ আইলসের গল্প বুননের পারদর্শিতা ক্ষণে ক্ষণে আমাকে মুগ্ধ করেছে। এর নিখুঁত আর গভীর পর্যবেক্ষণ ক্ষমতা যে একজন লেখকের মস্তিষ্কে থাকতে পারে তা এই বই না পড়লে বোঝা যেত না। তা-ও যে-সব বিষয়বস্তু নিয়ে লেখা তা অনাড়ম্বরভাবে ব্যাখা করা বেশ কষ্টসাধ্য। সেই দুরূহ কাজকে সরল লেখনশৈলীর মাধ্যমে স্বচ্ছ বর্ণনার সহিত দেখিয়েছেন তিনি। সংলাপের প্রয়োজনীয়তা ও ঘটনা বিবরণের প্রায়োগিকতা দুটোই ব্যালেন্স রেখে করেছেন। এই উপন্যাসের প্রাণ হচ্ছে সংলাপ। অনেক পাঠক এতে বিরক্ত হতে পারেন, তবে আমার এই সংলাপ নিয়ে খেলা বেশ ভালোই লেগেছে। অহেতুক বা অনাবশ্যক কোনো সংলাপ এই উপন্যাসে ছিল না। আর পুরো ঘটনার বিবরণ আমি যেন—কোনো বিগ স্ক্রিন টেলিভিশন সেটের সামনে বসে আয়েশ করে উপভোগ করেছি। এই বই পড়ার অভিজ্ঞতা আমার অনেক দিন মনে থাকবে।
● চরিত্রায়ন—
পেট মোটা বই যেহেতু—তাই চরিত্রের সংখ্যা নেহাত কম নয়। স্বতন্ত্র সব চরিত্র দিয়ে সাজানো এই উপন্যাসের চরিত্রায়ন। শুধুমাত্র বিগ্রেডিয়ার স্মিথ, মার্ক ম্যাককনেল, জোনাস স্টার্ন ছাড়াও মনে রাখার মতো চরিত্রের অভাব নেই। এমনকি টটেনহাউসেন ক্যাম্পের মেজরের চরিত্র থাকা স্কর্নার, ইহুদি নারী র্যাচেল, নার্স অ্যানা ক্যাস ব্যক্তিত্ব নিয়েও আপনি ভাবতে বাধ্য হবেন। অসাধারণ সব কৌশল আর বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত পদক্ষেপের কারণে চরিত্রগুলো যেন আমাদের চেনাশোনা কেউ। তাদের আগে কোথাও দেখেছি, উপলব্ধি করেছি—বলে বারবার মনে হবে।
● অবসান—
একটি স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ বইয়ের প্রশান্তির সমাপ্তি। অনেক দিন, এমন মন ভালো করা সমাপ্তির বই পড়িনি। এই বই দীর্ঘদিন মনে রাখার আরও একটি উপযুক্ত কারণ হবে এটি। লাভ দ্যাট।
● খুচরা আলাপ—
এই বইয়ের খুচরা বিষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা করতে গেলে একটাই শব্দ মাথায় ঘুরপাক খায়, আর তা হলো—মনুষ্যত্ব। কামিনী রায়ের লেখা ‘সকলের তরে সকলে আমরা’ কবিতার লাইনগুলো তখন মাথায় বারবার বাজতে থাকে। আমরা কি আধো পেরেছি, মানুষ হতে? মানুষ হয়ে মানুষের ওপর করা অত্যাচার, কঠোরতা প্রদর্শন; আজও কি মন থেকে ছুড়ে ফেলে দিতে পেরেছি? এই প্রশ্ন অন্যকে নয়, নিজেকে নিজে করে দেখুন একবার৷ ক্ষমতা দখল করে অপব্যবহারে মত্ত মানুষগুলোর পরিণতি কতটা করুণ হয়, তা কি আমরা দেখেও দেখি না? কবে আমরা বলতে পারব—সকলের তরে সকলে আমরা, প্রত্যেকে আমরা পরের তরে? কবে?
➣ লেখক ও অনুবাদক নিয়ে কিছু কথা—
লেখক গ্রেগ আইলসের পড়া প্রথম বই। অথচ মনে হয়, এই লেখা আমি আগেও কোথায় পড়েছি এবং দেখেছি লেখাগুলো জীবন্ত হয়ে ছোটাছুটি করতে। এই বইটি কার কাছে কেমন লেগেছে জানি না, তবে আমার কাছে ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ বই থেকেও বেশিকিছু। এই বইয়ের গভীরতা মাপা কঠিন, শুধু উপলব্ধি করে ক্ষান্ত দিতে হয়। লেখককে সাধুবাদ জানাই, অসাধারণ কাহিনি নির্ভর বইটি রচয়িতা করার জন্য৷
মূল লেখক যেমন আমার কাছে নতুন, ঠিক অনুবাদকও। অনুবাদক ইমতিয়াজ আজাদের অনুবাদ করা বই পড়লেও, স্বাদ পেয়েছি মৌলিকের। নির্বাচিত শব্দচয়ন আর সহজবোধ্য বাক্যগঠনের মিশেলে সুখপাঠ্য বইটি পড়তে তেমন কোনো সমস্যা হয়নি। তবে ‘সিলিন্ডার রিলিজ’ নিয়ে অংশগুলো বুঝতে কিঞ্চিৎ বেগ পেতে হয়েছে, বেশ প্যাঁচানো পদ্ধতিতে কাজটা করা হয়েছে বলেই। এত সব কঠিন বিষয়বস্তু নিয়ে লেখা বইটি তা-ও যতটা সহজভাবে অনুধাবন করতে পেরেছি—সেই সম্পূর্ণ কৃতিত্ব অনুবাদকের।
● সম্পাদনা ও বানান—
সম্পাদনা ভালো হলেও প্রচলিত অনেক বানানে ভুল রয়েছে। উল্লেখযোগ্য করে বলার কিছু নেই, পূর্বের মতো একই বানানের প্যাটার্ন অনুসরণ করা হয়েছে হয়তো।
● প্রচ্ছদ—
প্রচ্ছদ কাহিনির সাথে খুব একটা কানেক্টেড করতে পারিনি। ফ্রন্ট পার্টে ট্যাঙ্কের কাজ, বিশ্রামরত সৈন্য দ্বারা কী বোঝানো হয়েছে বোধগম্য হয়নি। গ্যাস মাস্ক, যুদ্ধ বিমান ও প্যারাসুটে করে নেমে আসা সৈন্য যা রিলেটেড ছিল।
● মলাট • বাঁধাই • পৃষ্ঠা—
শক্ত মলাট আর পোক্ত বাঁধাইয়ের কারণে বইটি একেবারে খুলে পড়া সম্ভব হয়নি। হাতে নিয়ে দুপাশে পৃষ্ঠা টেনে পড়তে হয়েছে। পৃষ্ঠা ক্রিম কালারের হলেও কিছুটা পাতলা মনে হয়েছে। যাহোক, প্রোডাকশন ভালোই। অন্তত টেকসই।

দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ! এই যুদ্ধ নিয়ে আপনার মস্তিষ্কে—ঠিক কতটুকু জ্ঞান আহরণ করা আছে? হয়তো আপনি সেলুলয়েডের পর্দায় অথবা অনেক সিনেমা বা টিভি সিরিজ দেখে থাকবেন—যেখানে চলা দীর্ঘ সংলাপের বিরতিতে যুদ্ধবিমানের হামলা, মাটিতে বোমা বর্ষণের স্ফুলিঙ্গ, সমুদ্রের ওপরে যুদ্ধজাহাজের তাণ্ডব আর গভীরে সাবমেরিনের কৌশলী পদক্ষেপের চিত্র বড্ড পরিচিত। এমন অভ্যস্ত করা বিষয়—চিত্তকে যতটা রোমহর্ষণ করে; তার চেয়েও বেশি করে নাৎসি (বইয়ে বানান—নাজি) বাহিনীর করা নির্দয় অত্যাচার। কী এমন করে তারা? কেন এত ক্ষোভ ইহুদি, পোলিশ, আমেরিকান, বিট্রিশ-সহ অন্যান্য জাতির প্রতি?
বলছি, তবে ধীরে। কারণ ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ লেখা হয়���ছে অত্যন্ত দক্ষ হাতে রয়েসয়ে। এই উপন্যাসের পটভূমি তৈরি হয়েছে ১৯৪৪ সালের দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ কেন্দ্র করে। যখন অ্যাডলফ হিটলারের নাৎসি বাহিনী প্রায় কোণঠাসা অবস্থায় জর্জরিত। তখন যুদ্ধের মোড় ও আত্মবিশ্বাস পুনর্জীবিতের উদ্দেশে যে ব্যক্তি হিটলারের পরে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভূমিকা রাখে সে হচ্ছে—হেনরিখ (হাইনরিখ) হিমলার। হিমলার, হিটলারের নাৎসি পার্টির মূল ব্যক্তি এবং ইহুদিদের স্বপ্নে—দুঃস্বপ্ন হয়ে হানা দেওয়া একজন এসএস নেতা। প্রবল বর্ণবাদী ও ইহুদি জাতিকে ধূলিসাৎ করার প্রবণতা হিমলারকে বানিয়েছে সাক্ষাৎ শয়তানে।
হিমলার যে ‘হলোকাস্ট’-এর সাথে সরাসরি অভিযুক্ত একজন সেটা আর বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না। ‘হলোকাস্ট’ এসেছে প্রাচীন গ্রিক শব্দ ‘হলোকাস্টন’ থেকে। যার অর্থ—আগুন দিয়ে হত্যা করা। এই হলোকাস্ট সম্পূর্ণ রূপে অর্পিত হয়েছে ইহুদিদের বিরুদ্ধে। মূলত ইহুদি নিধনের লক্ষ্যে হলোকাস্ট পরিচালিত হতো। তবে এই হলোকাস্ট থেকে আরও ভয়ংকর এক প্রক্রিয়া পদ্ধতি নিয়ে রচিত ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাস৷ সেই প্রক্রিয়া হলো এক প্রাণঘাতী গ্যাস। কোড নেম—ব্ল্যাক ক্রস!
ব্ল্যাক ক্রস কোড নেম হলেও শক্তিশালী এই নার্ভ গ্যাসটির নাম—সোমান। বাতাসের চেয়ে বেশি ভারী, দীর্ঘস্থায়ী, বিপুল ফলদায়ক, ধ্বংসাত্মক এই গ্যাস—ক্ষণিকের মধ্যে অসংখ্য মানুষ মেরে ফেলতে সক্ষম! স্বয়ং হিমলারের রক্ষণাবেক্ষণে জার্মানির বিভিন্ন ল্যাবে তৈরি করা হচ্ছে এই গ্যাস। সেইরকম একটি ল্যাব রয়েছে ‘টটেনহাউসেন’ নামক এক কনসেন্ট্রেশন ক্যাম্পে। এই ব্ল্যাক ক্রস গ্যাস উৎপাদনের মূল কারিগর টটেনহাউসেনে ক্যাম্পের কমাড্যান্ট ক্লস ব্রান্ড। নিষ্ঠুর, পিশাচ ও ধীমান এই ডাক্তারের অধীনে গ্যাস কার্যকারিতার গিনিপিগ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে ইহুদি-সহ অন্যান্য জাতির বন্দিদের। সেই বন্দিরা শুধুমাত্র গিনিপিগ হিসেবে নির্বাচিত হলেও, এসএস ও এসডি সেনাদের বাহুল্য উৎপীড়নের প্রতিনিয়ত মরণ শিকারে ভীতগ্রস্থ জীবন অতিবাহিত করতে হচ্ছে।

❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাসের টুইস্ট ও টার্ন প্রত্যাবর্তিত হয়েছে টটেনহাউসেন ক্যাম্প কেন্দ্র করে৷ নাৎসি বাহিনী ও হিমলারের তত্ত্বাবধানে থাকা এই ভয়ানক গ্যাসের প্রতিঘাতে ব্রিটিশ প্রেসিডেন্ট উইনস্টন চার্চিল ও বিগ্রেডিয়ার ডাফ স্মিথ মিলে ছক কষেছেন এক অভিনব ক্রিয়াসাধক কৌশলের। যে কৌশলের ওপর নির্ভর করে আছে যুদ্ধ জয়ের চাকা।
কী সেই কৌশল সেটা না বলি। তবে কৌশল সংঘটিত করার জন্য প্রয়োজন বিচক্ষণ, সাহসী, দূরদর্শী এমন কমান্ডো। সেই কমান্ডোর ভূমিকায় বিগ্রেডিয়ার স্মিথ বেছে নিয়েছেন তরুণ আমেরিকান ডাক্তার মার্ক ম্যাককনেল এবং নির্ভীক ইহুদি যুবক জোনাস স্টার্নকে। দুজন দুই মেরুর যোদ্ধা। কীভাবে তাদের এই মিশনে যুক্ত করানো হয়েছে এবং কোন প্রেক্ষিতে—সেই ঘটনা আরও দুর্দান্ত। একেবারে মোক্ষম চাল যাকে বলে অথবা সুযোগের সদ্ব্যবহার।
যাহোক, পুরো বিষয়টি যুদ্ধ বিষয়ভিত্তিক নিয়ে হলেও ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাসে প্রত্যকটি চরিত্রের নিখুঁত পর্যালোচনা ও মনস্তাত্ত্বিক ক্রিয়াকলাপ গভীরভাবে পর্যালোচনা করা হয়েছে। একে-তো দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ নিয়ে কাহিনি, তার ওপর ভীতিপ্রদ আর নৃশংস কার্যক্রমে ঠাসা এই উপন্যাস এক কথায়—অনবদ্য। শুধু বলব, এই রকম উপন্যাস বারবার পড়ার সৌভাগ্য সব পাঠকের হয় না। আর যারা যুদ্ধ নিয়ে বা যুদ্ধের আনুষঙ্গিক বিষয়বস্তু নিয়ে জানতে পছন্দ করেন এবং কনসেন্ট্রেশন ক্যাম্পে বন্দিদের প্রতি নাৎসি বাহিনীর প্রকৃত ঘটনার অবলোকন করতে ইতস্তত বোধ না করেন তবে এই বই নির্দ্বিধায় হাতে তুলে নিতে পারেন। প্রেম-ভালোবাসা, ভ্রাতৃত্ব বোধ, সন্তানের প্রতি নিবেদিত প্রাণ-সহ আরও অনেক অনুভূতি ঘিরে তৈরি হয়েছে ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাস।
➲ আখ্যান—
প্রায় শেষের দিকে চলে এসেছে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ। হার মেনে নেয়ার দ্বারপ্রান্তে চলে এসেছে জার্মান সেনাবাহিনী। মিত্রবাহিনীর জয় এখন সময়ের ব্যাপার মাত্র।
কিন্তু এখনও শেষ একটা তাস আছে হিটলারের হাতে। সোমান নামের এক ভয়ঙ্কর বিষাক্ত গ্যাস আবিষ্কার করেছে তার বিজ্ঞানীরা। টটেনহাউসেন নামের এক ক্যাম্পে প্রচুর পরিমাণে উৎপাদিত হচ্ছে এই গ্যাস, এর সাঙ্কেতিক নাম ব্ল্যাক ক্রস। হার যদি নিশ্চিত হয়, তবে এই গ্যাস ব্যবহারে বিন্দুমাত্র দ্বিধা করবেন না ফুয়েরার।
টটেনহাউসেন ধ্বংস করতে রওনা দিল জোনাস স্টার্ন আর মার্ক ম্যাককনেল নামের দুই কমান্ডো। বিমান থেকে ওরা প্যারাসুটে করে নেমে পড়লো জার্মানির অভ্যন্তরে।

❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ উপন্যাসের তাত্ত্বিক বিষয়বস্তু সীমাহীন। অর্থাৎ যুদ্ধকে কেন্দ্র করে যাবতীয় যত কার্যসিদ্ধির প্রয়োজনীয় লক্ষ করা যায়; সেই সব উপাদান এই উপন্যাসে বিদ্যমান। পর্যালোচিত সংলাপ এবং পারিপার্শ্বিক আবহের বর্ণনার সংমিশ্রণে উপন্যাসের প্রতিটি পাতা হয়েছে জীবন্ত। যেন কোনো ঘটনা, আমি জেগে থেকেও উপলব্ধি করতে পারছি বাধাহীনভাবে। উপন্যাসের যত গভীরে প্রবেশ করছি ততই জাগ্রত হয়েছে আমার বিক্ষিপ্ত স্মৃতিরা। আমি কখনও যুদ্ধে অংশগ্রহণ করিনি, নিজ চোখে অবলোকন করিনি নাৎসি বাহিনীর নারকীয়তা; তবুও আমি যেন উপন্যাসের প্রথম পাতা থেকে খুলে যাওয়া পোর্টালের মধ্যে দিয়ে অতিক্রম করে বিচরণ করেছি পুরোটা সময়। ভাগ্যের নাটকীয়তা আর যুদ্ধের নারকীয়তার মেলবন্ধনে সৃষ্টি ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ সত্যিকার অর্থে রোমাঞ্চকর এক উপন্যাস বটে।
● সূত্রপাত—
গল্পটা শুরু হয় বিমান দুর্ঘটনায় মারা যাওয়ার মার্কের দাদা-দাদিকে কেন্দ্র করে। মার্কের দাদা মার্ক ম্যাককনেল; যিনি টটেনহাউসেন ক্যাম্পে যাওয়া দুজন কমান্ডোর একজন। মারা যাওয়া মার্কের দাদির শেষকৃত্যে হাজির হয়ে র্যাবি লেইবোভিটয নামের এক ভদ্রলোক। যিনি মার্কের দাদার ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু। তিনি ও তৃতীয় মার্ক ম্যাককনেলের কথোপকথনের মধ্যে দিয়ে ঘটনা প্রসারিত হতে থাকে। মার্ক পেশায় একজন ডাক্তার ঠিক তার দাদার মতোই। কথোপকথন বিষয়বস্তু হচ্ছে দাদা মার্ক ম্যাককনেল অর্জিত ও বিবর্জিত যত ঘটনা নিয়ে। আর সেই ঘটনার পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ বর্ণনা দিতে হাজির হয়েছে লেইবোভিটয। প্রথমে উত্তম পুরুষে কাহিনি শুরু হলেও পরবর্তী লেখকের বর্ণনাতে পুরো ঘটনা বিবর্তিত হতে থাকে। শুরুতে আকর্ষিত হওয়ার মতো ঘটনা থাকার কারণে সাবলীলভাবে গল্প এগিয়ে যায়। শুরু থেকে কাহিনি ধীর গতিতে চলতে থাকা, ধৈর্য ও একাগ্রতা দিয়ে গল্পের আবহে ঘাপটি মেরে বসে থাকা গেলে—তবেই এই বইয়ের আসল মজা টের পাওয়া যাবে। আপনি যদি স্থিরচিত্তের হোন, তবেই বইটি নিয়ে বসুন।

এই বইয়ের খুচরা বিষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা করতে গেলে একটাই শব্দ মাথায় ঘুরপাক খায়, আর তা হলো—মনুষ্যত্ব। কামিনী রায়ের লেখা ‘সকলের তরে সকলে আমরা’ কবিতার লাইনগুলো তখন মাথায় বারবার বাজতে থাকে। আমরা কি আধো পেরেছি, মানুষ হতে? মানুষ হয়ে মানুষের ওপর করা অত্যাচার, কঠোরতা প্রদর্শন; আজও কি মন থেকে ছুড়ে ফেলে দিতে পেরেছি? এই প্রশ্ন অন্যকে নয়, নিজেকে নিজে করে দেখুন একবার৷ ক্ষমতা দখল করে অপব্যবহারে মত্ত মানুষগুলোর পরিণতি কতটা করুণ হয়, তা কি আমরা দেখেও দেখি না? কবে আমরা বলতে পারব—সকলের তরে সকলে আমরা, প্রত্যেকে আমরা পরের তরে? কবে?
➣ লেখক ও অনুবাদক নিয়ে কিছু কথা—
লেখক গ্রেগ আইলসের পড়া প্রথম বই। অথচ মনে হয়, এই লেখা আমি আগেও কোথায় পড়েছি এবং দেখেছি লেখাগুলো জীবন্ত হয়ে ছোটাছুটি করতে। এই বইটি কার কাছে কেমন লেগেছে জানি না, তবে আমার কাছে ❛ব্ল্যাক ক্রস❜ বই থেকেও বেশিকিছু। এই বইয়ের গভীরতা মাপা কঠিন, শুধু উপলব্ধি করে ক্ষান্ত দিতে হয়। লেখককে সাধুবাদ জানাই, অসাধারণ কাহিনি নির্ভর বইটি রচয়িতা করার জন্য৷
মূল লেখক যেমন আমার কাছে নতুন, ঠিক অনুবাদকও। অনুবাদক ইমতিয়াজ আজাদের অনুবাদ করা বই পড়লেও, স্বাদ পেয়েছি মৌলিকের। নির্বাচিত শব্দচয়ন আর সহজবোধ্য বাক্যগঠনের মিশেলে সুখপাঠ্য বইটি পড়তে তেমন কোনো সমস্যা হয়নি। তবে ‘সিলিন্ডার রিলিজ’ নিয়ে অংশগুলো বুঝতে কিঞ্চিৎ বেগ পেতে হয়েছে, বেশ প্যাঁচানো পদ্ধতিতে কাজটা করা হয়েছে বলেই। এত সব কঠিন বিষয়বস্তু নিয়ে লেখা বইটি তা-ও যতটা সহজভাবে অনুধাবন করতে পেরেছি—সেই সম্পূর্ণ কৃতিত্ব অনুবাদকের।

সম্পাদনা ভালো হলেও প্রচলিত অনেক বানানে ভুল রয়েছে। উল্লেখযোগ্য করে বলার কিছু নেই, পূর্বের মতো একই বানানের প্যাটার্ন অনুসরণ করা হয়েছে হয়তো।

While Iles set most of his work in Natchez, Mississippi, he also wrote two WWII thrillers including this one. Black Cross starts with the death in the 1990s of an old man, one Mark McConnell, a doctor. At the funeral, his grandson meets a elderly Rabbi, who tells him the details of a secret mission his grandfather conducted during WWII, one that might have changed the course of the war. The novel basically recounts the tale.
Without going beyond the back cover's blurb to avoid spoilers, in the winter of 1944, everyone knew DD was coming. The Nazis, way ahead of the allies in chemical weapons, developed horrible nerve gases that Himmler planned on using to stop the invasion-- soak the area where the allies land and they will all die! Nonetheless, Hitler did not like chemical weapons and neither side had used them in combat to date. The Iron Cross refers to the new, advanced nerve gases the Nazis developed. British intelligence devised a plan to send two civilians to the site of the new gas's development and unleash their own hastily developed nerve gas, basically as a bluff-- a signal that the allies also have nerve gas and would retaliate if the Nazis used it...
Iles is really in top form here, even if the pacing is a bit sluggish at first. Black Cross deftly, albeit horribly, highlighted the horrors of Nazi concentration camps. The camp where the new gas was developed needed of course human subjects to test it upon. One of the lead characters works as a nurse at the camp while also aiding the resistance. The grim subject matter sets the stage for the desperate mission, which in the end was undertaken by the McConnel and a Jewish partisan. While attending the funerals of his grandparents, Dr. Mark McConnell meets an old friend of his grandfather, Rabbi Leibovitz. For years the Rabbi worked with McConnell’s grandfather who had difficulty coping with his experiences from World War II. It seemed that his grandfather had been awarded a secret version of the Victoria Cross, England’s highest award for “unparalleled acts of valor and devotion in the face of the enemy,” kept many secrets from his son and grandson. McConnell is stunned as the Rabbi begins to tell him a story that dates back to February, 1944 in a place called Totenhausen located on the Recknitz River in northern Germany. After reading Greg Iles opening salvo in the historical novel, BLACK CROSS, the reader’s interest is captured.
The first Mark McConnell is an American educated at Oxford University with a medical degree and a master’s in chemical engineering who is asked by one of Winston Churchill’s senior advisors to join a British team to research poisonous gases. It is 1940 and England is hanging on by a thread against Nazi Germany when McConnell agrees to join the British. Fast forward to 1944 and McConnell is asked to head a group to develop a clear poisonous gas that was more toxic than Sarin (the gas that Hafez el-Assad recently used on the Syrian people). McConnell is a pacifist, and agrees to work only on defensive weapons, but the issue has become immediate as Churchill and the allies believe that Hitler is about to deploy a deadlier version than Sarin called Soman, another clear toxic agent that short circuits the central nervous system to block any allied landing in France. With Normandy planning already under way and scheduled for June the Nazi threat is immediate. McConnell’s problem is that his father had been a victim of poison gas during World War I and he witnessed the physical and mental scars throughout his childhood.
The allied plan is designed to warn the Nazis that they have their own supply of Sarin and Soman by destroying Totenhausen, a Nazi camp that conducts medical experiments to develop these toxic gases. Heinrich Himmler is in a race to show the Fuhrer the possibilities of using the gases to block the allies, before an allied demonstration influences his decision making. The plot is not an imaginary one as during the war there was a race to develop toxic gases and a defense against them. Iles creates a number of believable characters through which he tells McConnell’s wartime experiences. Churchill proposes to Eisenhower that the allies develop a toxic agent and use it against the Nazis in limited fashion or bomb the Nazi stockpile. The Supreme Allied Commander refuses, arguing that President Roosevelt would never allow the United States to be the first to deploy such a weapon. Churchill never one to be dissuaded once he made up his mind decides to go ahead with a plot of his own.
Iles has created a scenario that is historically believable. He presents a number of historical insights that reflect the low opinion the British have of American fighting capability, and British arrogance. Further, the conflict between Himmler’s SS, the Gestapo, and the Wehrmacht for Hitler’s “blessing” is dead on. Historical characters that are presented seem true to life, particularly Himmler, Eisenhower, and Churchill. The fictional characters are also extremely realistic. Dr. Mark McConnell’s evolution from a pacifist to an individual who is willing to kill innocent people in the name of saving the Normandy invasion is credible. Brigadier General Duff Smith who is in charge of the secret British plan to destroy Totenhausen and steal Nazi research on Soman gas is right out of MI5. Jonas Stern, is a Zionist guerilla fighter from Palestine who had served in the British army is captured and recruited as an integral part of the plan. Stern agrees because he wants revenge as he is told that his father had been gassed at Totenhausen and as a partisan fighter witnessed four separate Nazi extermination camps. Other important figures include Dr. Klaus Brandt who headed the research at Totenhausen and conducted numerous medical experiments and selections that resulted in the death a large number of inmates. Iles is very clever because the Nazi doctor, Karl Brandt did conduct medical experiments and was found guilty at Nuremberg and hanged in June, 1948. Anna Kaas, a nurse at Totenhausen, Rachel Jansen, an inmate at the camp along with her two young children, Ariel Weitz, a collaborationist Jew, and a number of other characters play important roles in the story.
The novel raises a number of difficult questions, especially when decisions have to be made regarding who should be protected as the plan is implemented. The issue of people “playing God,” as people have to decide who shall live, and who shall die plays out throughout the novel. Iles also explores the evolution of human relationships during the stress of war time. The bonding that takes place between McConnell and Stern is very interesting, as is McConnell’s relationship with Anna Kaas. The dilemma of Rachel Jansen brings to mind the decisions that had to be made in the book/film, SOPHIE’S CHOICE. World War II was supposedly the good war, but as Iles’ characters confront evil, there is no such thing.
Iles’ novel is suspenseful, realistic, and engrossing. These literary traits seem to characterize all of his books. A few weeks ago his latest work, MISSISSIPPI BLOOD, the third installment of his NATCHEZ BURNING trilogy was released and I cannot wait to get a copy and plunge right in.

This was one incredible book. The book is based during WWII at one of Germany's camps where different gases were tested. The book is a snap shot of England and America and their reaction to the rumor that Germany has perfected a gas for warfare. The allies send their brave men into the fray in order to save the day for the victims in the camp and the world at large. It is a hard and emotional read, Greg didn't pretty it up, IMO. But he did include moments of beauty and love within the horrors of war. Don't miss this book if you like to read about heros managing to save the day by the seat of their pants strictly with the fire in their hearts and the strength of their conviction that failure wasn't an option.

I have heard a lot of good things about Greg Iles, so I finally decided to give one of his books a shot, and since I'm a big WWII buff, I decided to start with Black Cross, and from the beginning, I was already hooked! I hope to check out more of his books in the near future.
The year is 1944, the Allied troops are preparing for D-Day, the Nazis have developed the world's deadliest nerve gas known to man (still to this day), which they intend to use to wipe out the Allied Forces when they attack. 2 different men with completely different backgrounds have been assigned by Winston Churchill to go behind enemy lines, and infiltrate the Concentration Camp where the Nazi's are developing the weapon and being perfected on human subjects.
The first operative is Mark McConnell, a young American scientist who has been studying research on the gas the Nazi's have been using. The second operative is Jonas Stern, a highly trained Jew who has been convicted of past crimes and has no love for the Nazis. Together these 2 unlikely allies are in for their deadliest mission, and their only objective, destroy the gas and any traces linked to it, no matter how many lives are lost, including their own.
Even though it's fiction the way Iles writes it makes it sound so real. Highly recommended to WWII buffs! May be the best WWII spy/espionage novel since Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett!

শেষ দিকটা মনে হয়েছে জনতুষ্টিমূলক উপসংহার, সকলে জিতিয়া গেল ধরণের। আর ফিলিস্তিনে ইহুদী বসতি স্থাপনকে যেভাবে গ্লোরিফাই করা হয়েছে, সেটাও প্রোপাগান্ডা ছাড়া আর কিছু না। চার্চিলের মত হাড় বদমাশের কাজকারবারের জাস্টিফিকেশনটাও ভাল লাগার কোন কারণ নেই। থ্রিলার হিসাবে ভাল, কিন্তু পশ্চিমা অনেক থ্রিলারের মতই ব্যাপকভাবে পক্ষপাতদুষ্টতায় আক্রান্ত।

In 2001 I conversed a bit with Greg Iles through emails and after reading The Quiet Game I told him I was torn between reading 24 Hours or Black Cross next. He told me he felt Black Cross was his best novel, so dilemma solved. Normally I wouldn't pick up this type of novel; wartime
action novels just don't appeal to me from a reading standpoint but I love war movies.
But as you know by now I'm a big fan of Greg Iles so I owed it to myself to read this. It's pretty good. It's about an Allied mission to avert a lethal gas attack by the Nazis with the Soman, the deadliest gas known. It did hold my interest, but like I said, novels with plenty of action tend to bore me a bit. I'm much more interested in character interaction
and psychological suspense than dodging bullets, so I still consider Mortal Fear his greatest work.
Now having said that, if this type of novel appeals to you, I doubt you'd find much better than Black Cross.

Having enjoyed past books by Greg Iles, the author name and book cover caught my eye. Resting on a table, front and center at Border's gave me the impression it was a new Iles page turner; I was surprised to see it was from the last century.
This is a slice of life story, about a young American doctor working for Britain during WWII. As a pacifist, he is happy doing research, but his unique background make him a prime cadidate for a "behind the lines" last ditch effort to reverse the potential outcome of WWII, weeks before D-day.
There is good detail regarding scene, weapons, and practices of the time. Enough is historically accurate to make the rendering seem entirely real.
All-in-all, this was an entertaining read and I would recommend it to anyone interested in historical, adventure fiction.

Not many people I've come across know about this book. I read a lot of thrillers -- and write some of my own -- and BLACK CROSS by Greg Iles is easily one of the best I've ever read. I'd hate to give much away, but the book, which takes place mostly during WWII, has action, suspense, spies and heart. It deals with disturbing subject matter without sensationalizing it. The characters are complex. And here's something I don't often say about a thriller -- I was very moved by this book. I highly recommend it.

Completely unbelievable but a right good read and very hard to put down.

The initial pace of Black Cross is somewhat pedestrian, but the final 100 pages are a rocket sled. Initially, Black Cross seems like a slow-starting mystery set in a historical setting, but it finishes like an action film with historical trappings. The novel posits a fictional concentration camp where realistic medical atrocities are being perpetrated in the name of the advancement of science. Unfortunately, the science to be advanced here would be chemical warfare and the atrocities are committed on Jewish prisoners. Of course, there is a profit motive involved in the mix, as well. One series of experiments is designed to make the offending doctor wealthy in the pharmaceuticals market of the post-war.
A young doctor discovers that there is a lot more to his grandfather’s life than he had heretofore realized. His grandfather never actually spoke about the events which are recounted in the remainder of the novel, but as the story unfolds, it is clear why he did not. The events which would make him a hero in some people’s minds would not have rested comfortably on the conscience of this person. Yet, he was a hero in the sense that he did what he had to do. He even had absolution from Winston Churchill himself. Yet, I can’t explain that without delivering an incredible spoiler.
Black Cross is solid historical fiction. It is the kind of story that has been researched well enough for verisimilitude that I (as usual in well-written historical fiction) learned something that I had to research further. I was (pardon the pun) patently unaware of the relationship between I.G. Farben , the massive German chemical group, and Standard Oil Corporation (as mentioned on p. 46), but subsequent research showed that this alliance was both profitable and controversial. I was also fascinated in realizing that MacArthur, Eisenhower, and Patton were all involved in putting down the WWI veterans who were protesting the government’s refusal to pay the army bonus promised during the depression. I didn’t know the U.S. used tear gas on its own veterans (pp. 312-313).

You alone have the strength to do what must be done. That is why we will win this war. The Englishman—yes, the American too—merely does his best in all contests. The German does what is necessary! Komeraden! Sieg Heil! Heil Hitler!
My favorite part of the book, however, was the resolution. The ending wasn’t Hollywood-cliché’ for the principals involved in the plot, but the ending did have a glimmer of hope for the future. And, after all, the future was what the heroes of the World War were fighting for.
A young doctor discovers that there is a lot more to his grandfather’s life than he had heretofore realized. His grandfather never actually spoke about the events which are recounted in the remainder of the novel, but as the story unfolds, it is clear why he did not. The events which would make him a hero in some people’s minds would not have rested comfortably on the conscience of this person. Yet, he was a hero in the sense that he did what he had to do. He even had absolution from Winston Churchill himself. Yet, I can’t explain that without delivering an incredible spoiler.
Black Cross is solid historical fiction. It is the kind of story that has been researched well enough for verisimilitude that I (as usual in well-written historical fiction) learned something that I had to research further. I was (pardon the pun) patently unaware of the relationship between I.G. Farben , the massive German chemical group, and Standard Oil Corporation (as mentioned on p. 46), but subsequent research showed that this alliance was both profitable and controversial. I was also fascinated in realizing that MacArthur, Eisenhower, and Patton were all involved in putting down the WWI veterans who were protesting the government’s refusal to pay the army bonus promised during the depression. I didn’t know the U.S. used tear gas on its own veterans (pp. 312-313).

This story was quite a ride. Briefly, it tells how an American doctor/scientist and a German Jew partner together to stop a Nazi poison gas attack against the D-Day Allied troops. But I have to say that it seemed more than that. It seemed very realistic when everything kept going wrong and nothing was going according to plan. It felt like it could have been a true story. There was a lot of suspense. I'm not really good with suspense; if this had been a movie I would've covered my eyes at some parts. With a book, that's not really conducive to finding out what happens!
Greg Iles is a very good writer of historical fiction. There were times I thought he'd written himself into a corner, but he found a way out. Also, I felt that there were some loose ends at the end - he avoided tying everything up in a nice package. I really enjoyed this, although I was afraid I'd have nightmares after finishing it! I didn't, though, so don't be afraid.

I couldn't put this book down; 625 pages of intense action. The story is part truth and part fiction. Truth: The Nazi's created Tabun in 1936, Sarin in 1938 and Soman in 1944.
In 1944 (in our fiction story) Churchill tried to get the US to agree to a show by demonstration to Hitler that we too had the poison gases. The US declined.
The British had stolen a small sample of Sarin; snuck it out of Germany and then re-developed it at Oxford University. Himmler wanted to use their gas to wipe out the Allied forces.
The British work had only produced a very amount compared to the Nazi's stock pile. So in a top secret plan Churchill took a top Chemical Engineer from Oxford who was an American and a Jewish fighter and sent them in to use the gas on a German concentration camp that the gases were being developed at.
The story had many twists and turns but was a very enjoyable read.

দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ নিয়ে দুর্দান্ত একটা স্পা��� থ্রিলার পড়লাম। বইটা হঠাৎ কিনা হয়েছিলো কোনো চিন্তা ভাবনা না করে। অসাধারণ ছিলো। মনে হচ্ছিলো সেই সময়ে চলে গিয়েছি জোনাস স্টার্ন আর মার্ক ম্যাককনেলের সাথে টটেনহাউসেনে । যুদ্ধের বীভৎসতাও নতুন করে উপলব্ধি করেছি। মাথা ঘুরানো টুইস্ট না থাকলেও তারা বাঁচবে নাকি মরবে তা জানার জন্য একদম শেষ পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করতে হবে। ইমতিয়াজ আজাদ ভাইয়ের অনুবাদ এই প্রথম পড়লাম। দুর্দান্ত লেগেছে। ৫৪৪ পেজের বই হলেও অনেক ফাস্ট ছিলো কিন্তু বইটা আস্তে আস্তে পড়াতেই আসল মজা। প্রথম দিকে বিল্ড আপ দেওয়ার জন্য কিছু স্লো লাগতে পারে আপনার কাছে কিন্তু আমার কাছে তা মনে হয় নি। প্রতিটা জিনিস উপলব্ধি করা যায় এই বর্ণনার মাঝে। আমার লিস্টে সেরা অনুবাদকের মাঝে আজাদ ভাইয়ের ও নাম ঢুকে গিয়েছে।

দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময়কালে জার্মানির টটেনহাউস নামের ক্যাম্পে বিপুল পরিমাণে উৎপাদিত হচ্ছে সোমান নামের এক ভয়ঙ্কর বিষাক্ত গ্যাস, যার সাংকেতিক নাম ব্ল্যাক ক্রস। টটেনহাউস ধ্বংস করতে মার্ক ও স্টার্নের অভিযান নিয়েই মূলত এই বইয়ের কাহিনী।
বইটা অনেকদিন আগে কেনা থাকলেও পড়া শুরু করেছিলাম অল্প কদিন আগে। একদম শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত আমার আকর্ষণ ধরে রাখতে সক্ষম হয়েছে ৬০৮ পৃষ্ঠার এই বইটা। অনুবাদও যথেষ্ট ভালো ছিল। শুধুমাত্র অ্যানা আর মার্কের রোমান্টিক সম্পর্কের ব্যাপারটা অপ্রয়োজনীয় লেগেছে, যদিও সেটার উল্লেখ খুব কমই। সব মিলিয়ে বলা যায়, এটা আমার পড়া সেরা অনুবাদ বইগুলোর একটা।

I could not put this down. Even though the book described some truly horrible things, I could look past them to go along with the story. The author used tension marvelously, building it up, and then performing a reveal or a plot twist, some of which left my jaw on the floor. The climatic battle and immediate aftermath was just vicious, but I did enjoy the resolution. I would have preferred the epilogue to be longer, but I am content with what was there.

This novel was seriously a roller coaster ride for me. I have never read any war books or even wanted to for that matter but I seriously could not put this down. This is the first book I've read by this author. I will definitely be reading more of his work in the near future.
