The life of a psychic is strange. It shouldn’t be deadly.

After several chaotic months, Bax has finally come to terms with his clairvoyant abilities. But fate takes a turn no psychic could have predicted when the teenage daughter of a prominent politician disappears under mysterious circumstances.

Forced to team up with his former nemesis, Bax is determined to continue his quest to atone for past mistakes. When the search for the missing girl uncovers a far more elaborate conspiracy, he begins to realize his selfless motives may be working against him - especially when the ghosts of his relatives appear with dire warnings about his imminent death.

Will Bax choose to save himself, or will he risk his life to save a girl who may not deserve salvation?

I guess I am the classic "late bloomer." I had to sit in the front row of the class picture every year in elementary school; I didn't reach my present, permanent height until the year I got my driver's license. It took me a long time to "grow up" mentally, too; I was probably the least goal-oriented person you could ever meet.

I always enjoyed reading books, though I was convinced that I was not, and never would be, creative enough to come up with an original idea or story without cobbling it together from things I'd already seen.

And so, in my mid-forties, imagine my surprise when a story was born inside my head, and nine months later had grown so large that I couldn't hold it in any more. I'm sure many writers tell similar origin stories, but I sure wouldn't wish a three-decade gap between high school Creative Writing class and, you know, writing something actually creative.

Better a "late bloomer" than a "never bloomer," I guess.

What else? Oh, yeah, I live in Arizona with my amazing wife Vaneza, and our kids, June, Benji, and Sunshine (two are dogs and one is a cat, I'll let you figure out which is which).

Ghosts is the 2nd of 3 books in the Bax Mysteries written by Patrick Hodges. While the first in the series set the tone for the core characters, this second book has them leaping off the pages with humor, charm, and intelligence. Bax struggled as a child to meet expectations; raised mostly by himself, he only got a new lease on life when a social worker of sorts helped get him set up at 18 in his own place and with a new job. After discovering his extra-sensory abilities and solving a local murder, Bax has leveled the playing field with the cop who'd thrown him in jail years ago. This time, she needs his help... and Bax is torn. Should he trust the woman who made his life hell, or is it time to move on? Clearly he is a good person, so he takes the risk, and in this case, it pays off. An unlikely bond forms between them, and while there are devastating consequences, there is also a powerful relationship in the making.

Bax also faces issues in his relationship with his girlfriend and former bestie who left town; both come to a surprising climax too... all the while helping Bax learn how to become an adult much more quickly than he thought possible. In this novel's mystery, a politician's daughter has been kidnapped. The man's assistant and lawyer figure prominently, as well as the politician's wife and a few other friends in their circle. But the truth lies deeper than a political scandal about to break open. The missing girl wrote a diary hinting about secrets she was going to reveal; even though she'd been a terror in high school (the ultimate mean girl who made a dozen enemies) she claims to be reformed. Which person in her life doesn't believe the new façade and has kidnapped her for their own revenge?

Hodges has created another cast of brilliant characters, even weaving together Bax's personal mission with his deceased family (brother, grandfather, great-grandfather) and a secret government sect who monitors people with psychic abilities. It all comes in handy when he solves the kidnapping crime, but he also discovers many sinister plots happening in the background. Full of suspense, magical psychic moments, and beautiful tests of friendship, I found the story intriguing and hard to put down. Given how much I enjoyed the first and the second book in this series, I'm keen to read the third very soon.

Another excellent read by Patrick Hodges! Ghosts picks up after Killers, when another mystery needs solving. Due to Bax's psychic powers, he's asked to work closely with the police department to help find the missing daughter of a prominent Senator. Once again, he employs the help of his friend-turned-more, Piper.

Ghosts adds additional otherworldly elements to the plot - namely, ghosts! With the help of Bax's deceased family members, we learn more about his complicated past and the danger his new abilities bring to his life. While Bax and Piper fight against the clock to save the Senator's daughter — having to face past hurts and present uncertainties — they also forge a connection that neither of them is willing to compromise.

Hodges brings emotional depth and intrigue to this next installment in The Bax Mysteries. Fast-paced, well-written, and brimming with suspense, Ghosts will keep you glued to your chair and desperate for more Bax books!

Bax is at it again, solving a new mystery of a girl gone missing from a prominent family with the aid of his best friend, Piper, while also trying to sort out is own life. His abilities are growing in unexpected and interesting ways, and I found myself completely sucked into the story, trying to solve the mystery right along with him. I can’t wait to see what Bax gets tangled up in next, and judging by the epilogue, things are only going to get more intriguing.
