Nico:
Four years ago, I made one mistake, and she left. I couldn’t convince her to stay, no matter how much I loved her... still love her. But one day she turns up at my door asking for my protection. A rival family is threatening her life and the business she busted her ass for. No matter what unresolved issues lie between us, the heartache I’ve carried, or the dreams I wish were reality, I won’t let anyone threaten her or the family I had always wanted to be mine. I will always protect her. But I am more than just a temporary bodyguard. I have a second chance to show her my love is worth fighting for, and I will claim her completely. With this new chance, she can’t escape the inevitable.

René:
Asking Nico for help is the last thing I want to do. After breaking up with him four years ago, I am not ready to be reminded of all the reasons I fell in love with him to begin with. Avoiding him becomes impossible when he is still the only man I trust to protect me and my family from a rival mafia boss intent on ruining our lives. His every touch reignites my passions. Though I fight it, and will never admit that my feelings for my ex had never died. As the heat between us flames to new heights, he tempts me with the possibility of a second chance at love.

I liked in enough 3.5⭐️😏😕

I was looking forward to Nico and Rene’s story and was bit disappointed with how they were portrayed in this book.  It’s a lengthy book and the back and forth with their emotions and action happened one too many times😏.

Nico and Rene broke up 4yrs ago over an incident involving a family member.  What happened was devastating but it certainly was something they could have addressed more maturely, nevertheless Rene is now danger and in need of his expertise.  Nico still being in love with her😘 comes to her rescue and steps in to keep her and her family safe.  Being in very close proximity with each other day in and day out is bound to bring up old feelings and desires which is understandable🥵😈.  The issue I had trouble with was their lack of honesty with each other.  They could see and sense their mutual attraction, yet neither were willing to admit to them in fear of rejection which made no sense😒.  It’s this back and forth of their struggle to bare their soul to the other that dragged on way longer than it should have.  There are incidences that take place that does cause some setbacks but not enough to be truthful especially when their lives are in danger and there are no guarantees that they would survive from the enemy’s attack😰.  What I did appreciate were the family and friends that cared for them and called them out on their BS👍🏽.  I wished Nico had been more decisive with his feelings for Rene and acted as he does with his job.  Rene should have been supportive of Nico 4yrs ago as she is quick to do so with her friends.

In the end they do reconcile and are back together which I’m happy about, it just took too long into the book for it to have happened.  The good part was their love of family❤️ although Nico could have been more present with his own but I understood the reason why he wasn’t.  I’m torn on how I feel about this book.  Glad that I read it to see what happened with Nico and Renee just wished it wasn’t so long and they acted their age😣.

Didn’t enjoy it (contains spoilers)

I really struggled to finish the book. As Sean said, René’s levels of selfishness and lack of accountability were too much. She was also a hypocrite. She accused Nico of being a white savior (while for all we
know the cop would have attacked Sean anyway) but then comes to him to save her. On top of that after almost 4 years of no contact, she even has conditions of how the help she seeks needs to be provided. Her constant lying to her friends and her parents under the guise of protecting them was really frustrating and cost them all more than necessary. The final straw for me was her attitude after she was rescued. She went into the room when she was asked not to and then got upset at the violence. When she asked for protection and knowing Gio, Nico and crew are part of the mob, what did she expect? All the mixed signals that she kept throwing at Nico gave me whiplash.
As for Nico, is weakness was a turn off. He came across as pathetic at times, mooning after René. Being a « good guy » is all well and good but he let René walk all over him at the risk of endangering people. He never enforced any sort of boundaries with her, happy to accept crumbs and blaming himself for things which had nothing to do with him. Everyone and everything was more important to her than him. She literally made an effort only in the last 10 pages of a 400 pages book and even then, because he ask for time, she was ready to leave less than 1 hour after her sad apology.
As an aside, after 10 years away, Nico couldn’t last more than 1 month in Italy ? What was the purpose of the grand gesture of the one way ticket?
I don’t enjoy this sort of struggle love romance books.

Book 2

Ok Gio is still unhinged but a dad of 5 he's digestable.

I think this book is maybe one of the first mafia romances where things actually impacts a character and their healing isn't framed as something love fixes. Phew Rene gets taken through the ringer because of her cousin Onika but Nico (bodyguard who was shot in book1) tries to make things right. Of course this causes a turf war. I mean nothing and I mean nothing came easy for these two. The third act breakup even felt necessary but handled really well. I really enjoyed this entry.

CN: blackmail, coercion, torture, gun violence, chronic illness, police violence and corruption, racism, kidnapping, bondage, nurder

Almost Better Then the First

I allow myself so many days for reading then 3 days of no reading. This was on my last day and I could not wait three days to finish this so, I made sure everything was done early. Then I was able to read none stop, I didn’t even watch my favorite shows I was on a mission. I felt I recorded them I’ll be able to watch them tomorrow. Then Sunday I will start with the last series, this was really good, I look forward to the next one. The BDSM is off the charts, even though it mostly dealt with rope play, I thought it would have brought some of the other into play. But it all was very good. I know I will be reading this series over and over again.

Not my favorite but I support the writer

After the first book this one was kind of disappointing. More so Rene. In the first book she was strong. In her own book she was weak and her internal dialog made me want to just get rid of her. She created all these negative feelings, thoughts and outcomes for no reason. There was nothing in her background to give credence to her self depreciating behavior. Maybe this is the feeling the writer wanted to inspire. Idc but not my favourite.

All except the ropes and hog tying

This book was not as good as the first but I still enjoyed and the story still holds you till the end. Now Rene was overly emotional about EVERTHING. Not saying in some situations in wasn't warranted. Although holding Nico responsible for what happened to her brother was ridiculous and for 4 years. Yes I agreed with the sister that she was indeed selfish, but Rene redeem herself towards the end. A good read overall. Now on to Onika and Zo they seemed so much more interesting.

Relationships are not easy!

I enjoyed reading the complex relationship of Rene and Nico. The angst, miscommunication, lack of trust and honesty and communication - both were guilty of and more. However, their families especially Rene's - the Duncan Family was their saving grace. Love the family storyline on both sides.
It was good to also catch up on Jessie and Gio ( 6 kids under 4 - Cho!).
Love a man who enjoys reading romance books. Looking for to Zo and Onika's story.

Love Nico

Nico is a protector and lover at heart. I love everything about him. No lie, I wanted to sleep Rene to next year. The level of stubbornness, selfishness, and aloofness was too much! I'm glad things came together, but I wish there was an epilogue. But there is a bonus. Can't wait for Zo's story

Disappointed

I stopped reading at 70%. Rene was selfish and irked me so bad I couldn't finish the book. Book 1 was better. Rene did nothing but take from Nico and gave nothing in return. He deserved better and she wasted his time. She needed to grow up or just be single with abstinence. She was immature and ungrateful throughout the book.

nico and Rene’

She met him through her best friend Jesse as he was her bodyguard! They became a couple until an incident with Rene’s brother forced her to walk away! She began receiving threats from a local mob family and she needed Nico! He would protect her at all costs! Rene had to let go of the past hurts to find her live if a lifetime!

spicey sweet selfish

Renee, what can I say about her even with everything that happened to her and her brother she was a selfish bitch lol. Anyway, this book was a good read. Loved all the Jcan emphasis in it as I am an Island girl lol it’s a good read short and spicy and sweet with enough Maffioso blended in.

Wow!!!

This installation of the Oliveri series kept me in suspense. The relationship between Nicole (Nick) and Renee was sometimes frustrating! All they need to do was COMMUNICATE! I did enjoy the story and have started the third book in the series. This was well written. I am definitely a fan of Ms. McFarlane.
