Val x Love is rated M for Mature. There is nudity and situations barely escaping the category of hentai as well as scenes of violence as the Valkyries of the story do combat against the demons they are sworn to protect humanity from so Make sure younger readers do not grab this one from the shelves (most of these volumes are covered in plastic to prevent peeking anyway.)
Takuma is a typical high school boy with he exception being he looks like a monster with sharp teeth and scars that cause others to fear him even though he is a nice guy who is terrified of human touch. It is a real shame that he is destined to help 9 Valkyrie sisters and the only way to power them up is to deepen his relationships with them whether through certain situations or intimate physical contact such as kissing and groping. Of course each sister seems to share a personality type to match anyone's fetish if you are patient enough so until they get to your future waifu they gladly offer you fanservice galore to tide over your perverted fantasies.
I am pretty sure this series is mainly going to get more cliche as we get more volumes and I am concerned with so many girls how many will fade into the background as Takuma end up choosing his favorite eventually (assuming he gets over his fear of contact since they are technically not human.) I am going to give this series another volume since it is not being as bad as some I have seen and have hopes of character development though I will not be reading this in public. :)
Given a choice of moment I might consider my fave... I would think some of the best moments are Takuma being nice regardless of how he looks like when 2 of the sisters find out he wants to kick them out and when explained they had no where to go he immediately gives up not wanting to put the 9 sisters to the curb. :)
I really enjoyed volume 1! I personally enjoy a lot of manga and graphic novels that are comedy harem themed. If you enjoy other stories like Date A Live, Heaven's Lost Property, Sekirei, etc. then you'll certainly enjoy this read.
I honestly surprised by the lack of an introduction to the story. A lot of similar stories tend to spend the first volume or two setting up the future of the series, but Val X Love just hops right into the plot, peppering in flashbacks to give more details. This seems to be a smart play considering the ridiculous story to come. This way they can show and tell the story any way they desire without having to worry about preset boundaries.
I just wish I could have met some more of the cast, but that's what the next volume is for, right?
This manga is about a bunch of girl who live with a guy who's absolutely terrified of them. Not only that, they were sent by Odin to stop the end of the world. So the guy who's terrified of everyone has to live with a group of girls that have their own problems that they need to overcome as well as the problems that he needs to overcome in order to save the world. If you don't like ecchi...like almost full on porn ecchi, skip this.
This review will be for the first 2 volumes. This series needed to pick a lane. It straddled a fence between the ecchi stuff and the "wholesome" stuff. Either one would have been a good manga, in its own way, but as is, it was wholly unsatisfying.
When I bought this I didn't realize the clothes on the girl, on the cover where disappearing. So looking at it again I felt quite silly, it does actually happen in the manga, so I'll give it props for that.
The story is about a guy, who everyone thinks is a demon. There so many good moments, where he's just being misunderstood and people are running away in fear. It's not until we come across some girls, where one is being finger blasted by another. I have never seen that in a manga before, I have read How to Build a Dungeon: Book of the Demon King Vol. 1. Which featured graphic sex scenes, but still didn't go that far.
Anyway the rest of the story is about him living with a bunch of girls, they're Valkyries. Sent down by Odin, they can only access their power by doing explicit things with the guy.
Whilst I quite enjoyed the demon boy portion of this, I didn't really like the girls, they just came off as a bunch of bitches.
2022 February Nothin but Love Reading Challenge Prompt: read a romance manga
The biggest thing I want to address is how this series uses its titular valkyries (pun intended) and dates to parallel real world relationships. Itsuyo's desire to be seen as "mature" and "grown up" since she was allegedly a cry baby when she was younger is very real and common sentiment for young girls; teens want to be taken seriously and prove their not children anymore (even though they technically are, sorry kiddos) and so they push themselves to perform "adult behavior". In Itsuyo's case, she's trying to be more daring and forward with Takuma, but ultimately can't bring herself to because, even if she doesn't admit this, it isn't who she is or what she truly wants. That's why its so satisfying seeing her level up from Takuma patting her head because she acknowledges and accepts it as the form of affection she's most comfortable with. That's going to be a running theme with this series and its understandable since Takuma is dealing with nine different girls/women who have very different needs and desires. And weirdly enough, it's one of the things I love most about this series, mostly because I feel like that's not fully explored in other harem series.
And of course, I love Takuma and think he's one of the most original and compelling harem leads in anime/manga. Having a protagonist who is afraid of people/social interactions be forced to interact with people and engage in romantic interactions is brilliant and provides both conflict and potential for character development. I like all the sisters well enough (though Futaba is best girl) and I really like the art style.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun rereading this and am looking forward to rereading more!
