“Choose the person you want on your bad days, not your good ones.”

I’m in awe of the way Amy blends so many stunning folktales and myths from around the world. From Anya’s powerful Russian & Finnish shamanitsa energy, to Hamish’s heartbreaking Australian curse, and then the glorious Honaw twins Native American magic, and a hint of Vodou. Ashes of the Firebird is a fantastic, dark, magical adventure.

These characters?!?! How can you create such an amazing group (over a dozen) of supernatural and magical beings, that are unbelievably attractive… and constantly fighting the urge to rip each other’s throats out (or clothes off.) I’m not even kidding… mythological shapeshifters, demon hunters, and everything in between. The banter and sexual tension was perfection. I adored the new characters, but especially Aramis, Sören, Mychal, and all of Harley’s crew.

Anya has gone through so much to get to this point, and I’m excited to see where this story takes her. Hopefully she’ll discover a few answers and a bit of retribution.

Obviously I loved the sexy bits, but I’ve got to say the ceremony in the forest might’ve been my favorite! I’m already freaking out, because I don’t know when the next book will be released?! And that shocking cliffhanger ending blew my mind.

Thank you to Amy Kuivalainen and the publisher BHC Press for the opportunity to read this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Sadly I did not enjoy this second installment as much as I liked the first, many of the things I overlooked in book1 irked me this time around 🙊🤐

It reads more YA than NA/Adult despite the MC being in her late twenties. I know she lead a sheltered life prior to book1 which in itself is an explosion of reveals but her reactions just don’t line up for me - she says/thinks one thing but doesn’t “act” in the mature way she thinks she is 🤷
And don’t get me started on her magical temper tantrums, early in this book she reacts in a certain way to escape the Dreamland, the more seasoned magical users explain to her why this was a bad idea even though it worked without issue this time yet later she does something very similar - albeit worse imho as the second time it felt like a temper tantrum 😶

I also have 🙄 reactions triggered at the many hinted at love interests. There isn’t exactly a triangle in the traditional sense and I have absolutely nothing against people dating/playing the field/sowing wild oats whatever you wanna call it – but it’s becoming more than tiresome to read about how every other new male character introduced is besotted with her...I may be being harsh here as this series was originally published in 2014-16 and the market certainly had a diff vibe then vs now - but there are scenes in this book & the previous one where I was left 👀 wondering where's the 😘 consent 🤦

One of the strengths of book1 for me was the found fam vibes. These expand further here with Silvian, the New Orleans gang; an intro to Aramis’ Loki’esque twin brother; Aleki crossing over and bringing demon hunter Mychal onto the board. While I liked each of the new characters we meet and the potential storyline expansions they bring, especially an interesting prophetic dream, it did sadly double down on the superficial feeling of the read as there are so many players we don’t really get to “know” them and they all just fall in as time skips along without us seeing any interactions that gel them together if that makes sense 🤔

I’m going to come back for book3 to see how this all shakes out and hope for a happy ending for 🔥🐦👑 whatever that may be considering the series is named after them plus the characters, myths and magical settings *are* pretty cool it is just unfortunate that it tends feels so surface level. The ideas/players in this series could have worked really well in a 5-6book series giving itself time to flesh out and get to know the characters better + witness them get to know one another and to learn about the world/magic as Anya does – squishing it all into 3 just leaves everything feeling sadly rushed 😕

This sequel to "Cry of the Firebird" picks up right where book one left off, so you will definitely want to read book one before starting "Ashes of the Firebird" or you'll be pretty lost. Here the war between Darkness and Illumination is getting closer and magic users are choosing sides or trying to keep their heads down and stay as neutral as possible. Anya, Yvan, Trajan, and the others are recuperating in Budapest from their big fight to close a major gate between worlds at the end of "Cry of the Firebird", but more complications are cropping up. The biggest being demons getting really active, helping introduce a new demon hunter character called Mychal who looks like he's going to bring in a whole new set up complicated twists, and the discovery that Anya's great grandmother, the legendary Yanka, is still alive. Turns out the Illumination have been keeping her in a secret lab in a medically induced coma and running all kinds of experiments on her. Naturally, Anya wants to free her. Theoretically, everyone agrees that's the right thing to do because experimenting on people is wrong, but most of the characters (and eventually even Anya) are more than a little concerned with what letting Yanka loose in the world could mean.

Even without the chasing, constant danger, and fights of the first book, "Ashes of the Firebird" remains intense and fast paced. The focus is mostly on Anya but Aleksandra's character gets a lot of good development and page time as well, which I enjoyed. We also get to meet Aramis' people, the Alfr (elves) and get a glimpse into their world that I expect we'll see more of in the next book. There's more emotional development for Anya as she and Trajan navigate their unusual relationship, Anya's powers continues to grow, and she discovers new aspects to her magic. She continues to find herself in over her head through no real fault of her own and trying to keep up with magic users and supernaturals who have been at this for centuries (if not longer) and you have to admire her for not having more breakdowns than she does have. I wanted to just shake a few characters for not explaining things to Anya because you know there are things about Yanka, the Alfr, and who knows what else that are going to come back later to bite her just because no one sat down and had a conversation explaining facts of life to Anya.

Love, friendship, new allies, pain, betrayals, shocks and surprises- "Ashes of the Firebird" has it all. Fast paced and intense from start to finish, Amy Kuivalainen once again creates a book that will keep you on your toes and waiting eagerly for the next book to see how the story continues to unfold.

The newest instalment of 'The Firebird Fairytales' didn't disappoint! There are new monsters to Google (ordogs anyone?) and battles to fight. Extra layers of history and complexity are added to the characters stories and unexpected changes happen within the group dynamic. 'Ashes' is a fitting title because despite the victory of closing the gates in the last book the group is in tatters emotionally and physically and they're now enemies of the powerful Illumination as well as the Darkness. New characters come into play like the pieces of a board and every one carries an air of 'omg something is about to happen and these guys are really important.' Due to the growing cast the author has written a helpful 'Who's Who' character listing in back to make sure you can keep track. The new characters, especially the mysterious and kick ass Mychal, all bring new challenges to the story as well. Anya herself goes through some hard emotional battles, fighting with her addictions and gains new insight and training into her magic. I like that she doesnt just have awesome abilities straight away like a lot of urban fantasy; she has to have lessons to train it and stop it from tearing herself up and it really reinforces that magic comes at a price and it exacts its cost on Anya. The ending is a doozy and I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Amy Kuivalainen continues to be one of the most imaginative, refreshing authors I’ve ever read. I held off on reading the first book in The Firebird Faerie Tales in order to wait for the release of the sequel. So as you can imagine, I was elated and pleasantly surprised when I learned my wait would not be long. Thank you to NetGalley, BHC Press, and Amy Kuivalainen for the ARC.

Ashes of the Firebird picks up directly following the cliffhanger ending of Cry of the Firebird. The story continues to use intercultural folklore, blending Russian, Native American, and Finnish magic, voodoo, curses, and powers. The found family of supernatural characters—including shifters, demon hunters, ordogs and more—have closed the gates, but the action and adventure is far from over.

Book two includes more twists, turns, and added spice.
The female characters were much more developed in this book. My main issue was the introduction of new characters in an already active, borderline overpopulated storyline. What is the most refreshing is the reminder that people—supernatural or otherwise—can’t use magic to solve all their problems. The characters have to learn from their mistakes and make sure to remember the physical and emotional costs of using too much power.

I love how Amy pieces together this story and expands the world she created in Book 1. This book is a rollercoaster of emotions and I absolutely loved it. The world is so broad and full of intense mythology and deep characters. I couldn't help but want to devour this book.
The FMC Anya is so beautifully faceted and so relatable in the way that most heroines are not. She loves deeply and steps up to the challenges brought before her bravely, and maybe a little begrudgingly at times. She has experienced so many changes and it is a beautiful journey to witness the growth and struggle of the MC so fully.
The cast in this book is so diverse and so incredibly badass that I couldn't help but fall in love with each of them. The found family trope is one of my favorites, and Amy executes it to perfection. Each character added to the group is so diverse and brings their own strengths to the table.

I felt every emotion possible reading this book and the ending left me staring at my ceiling for hours, and thinking about it for days after. I cannot wait to see how Anya's journey continues and I will be recommending this series to all who will listen.

I love it that I always get what I expect with Amy Kuivalainen. Just the right amount of action and romance and beautiful men I can fell in love with. There is not one boring moment in the book. It sucks you in and won’t let go.

I had to pace myself so as not to finish Ashes of the Firebird in a day because I just wanted to savour it.
I loved all of the characters, Aramis being my favourite and I’m sorry to say that Anya is the one I liked the least.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy.

I read “Cry of the Firebird” earlier this year for book club and really enjoyed it, so I was thrilled to receive an ARC of “Ashes of the Firebird,” the next book in The Firebird Fairytales. While it took me a little while to pick up on the Finnish and Russian mythology (that was all new to me) in the first book, I was able to dive right into “Ashes” where the first left off and felt fully immersed back in the story.

Part of what drew me to the first book was the awesome cast of characters, and Amy Kuivalainen did not disappoint with keeping up with the original characters while introducing some new favorites!

The end totally blew me away and absolutely left me wanting more!! I can’t wait to see what Amy comes up with next!

Ashes if the Firebird is the second in the series of the Firebird Fairytale and our girl Anya still can't seem to catch a break! 'Ashes' starts straight off the back of Cry of the Firebird, the gates are closed but there is still trouble brewing. I really loved this book, I could live inside of it forever.
So much is going on in this book; there are new faces, new mythology and culture, it's easy to forget the real world and get stuck into this crazy fantasy world of demons, Alfr, hunters and shamans.
Everyone in team Anya have their own reasons for being around; the characters from Cry of the Firebird are still there with some new faces thrown in the mix. It's really fun to see them all interact and come together.
Defiantly should not try to read this as a standalone, you'd be missing out on too much back-story.
You can feel this is building up to something massive. Cannot wait for the next book!

First, let me say that I was given an early reviewer copy of this in exchange for an honest review (through the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program).

Second, I'm feeling very mixed about this book. For as long as it was, it felt like most of the narratives got short shrift - and that's because there are So Many Narratives within the larger story. I didn't mind the changing perspectives at all, but I did mind that the big twist at the end was completely out of left field. I'm going to stick with the series because I'm very invested in a couple of the stories, but I did almost give up on this book a couple of times out of frustration. Love the story, just wish it was treated as respectfully in this book as it was in the first.

4.5/5 Stars.

I have a lot of feelings about this book because this story genuinely made me feel such a vast amount of emotions. There is love, happiness, sadness, anger, hurt, brokenness, betrayal, and a slew of other feelings.

I absolutely love this story of Anya and her found family. There is so much emotional growth and change for Anya and for the different people throughout this story. We learn more about Aleksandra and are introduced to new characters that we only dabbled in understanding and I am very much anticipating learning about. We learn more about Anya and Yanka, their histories, and the power of their family. Anya journeys to continue learning to keep her magic stable and controlling it.

There is a lot going on in this story - so much happening with Anya, Aramis, Yvan, Trajan, Aleksandra, and so many others - we are learning so much about each of these characters through multiple POVs. A lot of times, you find that it can be TOO busy and doesn't generally bode well in a story, especially if it isn't done properly. Amy does not disappoint in managing multiple POVs throughout this story. She manages everything going on so well that you don't feel lost when you are jumping around with the different characters. You know exactly where you are and what is going on with these characters and those around them.

I am still feeling so many emotions about this story, but it is worth the read. Prepare your heart and your mind for this story. It is worth it. So worth it.

This story continues with Anya after she successfully closes the gates between worlds and falls into a magical sleep. Her gang of misfits now have a new mission, first to wake Anya and then to free Yanka; who is not as dead as they thought.
Anya yearns to right the wrongs towards Yanka and honor her blood but does she have the full story of what Yanka is capable of. In the end, will she forsake those she has come to love, letting blood and magic trump all; or will the love she found stay true and guide her towards what’s right…

It has gods and demons, secrets and betrayal, impending war, dream walking, missions, hidden identity, found family, death, heartbreak and magic.
My favorite thing about this story is still the characters, both new and old. I like how they each have their own individual story but it seems they are meant to collide and see the overall plot out together.

Anya is just attracting all the honeys in this one. We got Trajan, Aramis and of course, Yvan. You even got some others looking a bit interested. Whatever this girl got, I think I need some of it .
But Yvan is now my official favorite. Playing the long game while making his bond with Anya stronger is just good sense. I still love his grumpy hero vibes, how he will do anything to protect her and will choose her over everything.

I once again did not see that ending coming. I knew Yanka wasn’t going to be what we expected, but definitely didn’t expect that! And Trajan…
Now I need to know how this story ends.

“I still feel like the little girl everyone’s trying to protect. But I’m not her, and I will never be her again.”

SPOILERS**
I'm going to first start by saying I will read anything this author writes. I was so excited for this series because it's a little different than her other books and I read the first and second books in two days. I love the series so far and can't wait to read more.

The first book in the series was excellent but some of the relationships and character development felt rushed. In this book, we get to know (and like) Anya a little more, we also see her grow a lot more as a person and become a little more independent. In general, the character development is a slightly more in-depth than it was in the first book. There are a few new relationships and characters in this book, but the relationships do not feel as forced as some of the relationships did in the first book. I am DYING to know who Anya is going to end up with, the tension between her, Trajan, Aramis, Yvan, and ~possibly~ Soren is literally killing me. I also loved the introduction of the Alfr in this book and hope we see more of them and get more insight into their magic system. The ending of this book was phenomenal. I had a feeling Yanka was Vasilli's mother but I wasn't sure how that would play into Anya's relationship with Yvan. I am anxious to read the next book and see who survived the fight!

Overall, I loved this book and the author's writing style. I can't get enough of her books.

This is just such an amazing series and I’m totally obsessed! I was on the edge of my seat from the storyline and magic, but mostly from the drama! Relationships are changing and love and loss is a major theme. We also meet lots of new characters that make Anya’s cadre even more exciting. I’m loving Mychal and his storyline with Alexandra. Even though there are so many mysteries surrounding him, I’m not even mad. The odd love square of Anya, Yvan, Trajan, and Aramis shifts every other chapter and I’m totally here for it! I have my favorite, but the dynamic with each one is so different and special who knows where it will go! Everyone plays such an integral part of the story and the plot is unfolding, albeit very slowly. A majority of the book the team is in Budapest, only leaving for a fast paced portion near the end. Even though I feel like not much happened, everything has changed. Everything. One thing that I wish I had was just a list of characters with name pronunciations and their supernatural ability. Maybe even a little recap at the beginning of the book to remind me what is going on. My jaw is on the floor from the ending and now I need to pick it up so I can twiddle my thumbs and wait for the next book! Great series. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley and BHC Press.

"Lovers will come and go. There are only two things that matter in this life: magic and blood."

This book has absolutely wrecked me, but in the best way possible. Anya's story continues in the second installment of the The Firebird Faerie Tales, and I am convinced that Amy Kuivalainen is an absolute genius. The writing was superb (as always) and the story telling was undeniably enthralling. I loved the witty banter, and the twists and turns were shocking. So much happens in this book, and it's going to be on my mind until I can finally get my hands on book three of this series.

"Mostly, I'm afraid you'll disappear as soon as I get used to the sight of you."

The progression of the relationships within the group was super interesting, and I really enjoyed how the dynamic between the characters shifted. Anya continues to experience character growth, and it was intriguing to see how she is coming into her own in regards to her magic and her place in the world. She's my favorite reluctant hero, and the side characters in this book are quickly becoming some of my favorites as well. This was a no-brainer 5-star read.

HOLY HECK.

It’s been almost a year since I read the previous book, CRY OF THE FIREBIRD. But, as with all my favorite series for which I wait a very long time between installments.... I fell right back into the narrative seamlessly. And then some!
Amy Kuivalainen has crafted a masterful series, rich with religious and mythological lore, but—Muses be praised!—she does not neglect her plot or her characters. The type of being or the role they fill, whether shapeshifter, Thanatos, demon hunter, or incubus, is never the sum total of who they are as a person, and I find myself drawn into each and every interaction. I am taken up and taken in with the mystique and the intrigue; I am fooled by double-crosses, I am so absorbed in the story that I miss the foreshadows, thus each plot twist blows me away. I find myself talking to the book as if the characters could hear me—I desperately want Anya and her friends to succeed and vanquish Vasilli and all his ilk once and for all! A stellar adventure from beginning to end, and trust me when I say you will NEED the box set because you won’t be able to stop reading until you reach the end of the whole series!

Ashes of the Firebird is book two of the Firebird Faerie Tales novel series. I am blown away. Seriously. Holy cow. First, let me start with Anya. I love her. I love her personality, her vulnerability in overcoming/battling her trauma and addiction, her openness to accept others who society wouldn't, and her determination to not only master her skills but right wrongs others wouldn't have the nerve to do. I also love how when Anya loves someone, she gives them her whole heart. Now, let's talk about her found family. There isn't one side character I don't love. I'm obsessed with their banter, the dynamics of all the different relationships, and their unwavering support for one another. That being said, Yvan is still my favorite. Well, him and the sassy know-it-all firebird, of course. I can't even begin to explain how excited I am to find out what will happen in book three. Speaking of which, the ending gutted me. I wasn't prepared to have my heart ripped out of my chest, but I ugly cried (read: sobbed).

So first thing to be upfront about this book and my reading of it. When I requested it from NetGalley, I somehow missed that this was the second book in a series. So that fact colors a lot of my review because I spent a good amount of time trying to connect the lost pieces of storyline that linked back to book one which I did not have.

While I did enjoy the characters and the found family aspect that they encompassed, I couldn't really find myself connecting with them. Or understanding why their growth as characters was so important. I also got very confused because of the many POVs.

Overall, I did think it was well written and the pacing was good. The characters seem very fleshed out. This was just a lot of user error on my part.

Three and a half
This follow up book takes the original ideas and just ramps up the tension. Anya is still very much piggy in the middle being pulled in numerous directions but of one thing she's sure and that is that she needs to rescue her grandmother. Trouble is not everyone agrees with that idea but will Anya make the right choice ?
If you enjoy an ensemble cast trope such as those written by Jenn Lyon or Leigh Bardugo I think this might appeal. I enjoyed the multiple points of view as it helped open up the story. For this reader as I hadn't read the first book I did struggle initially to fully immerse myself in the world building which felt oddly modern and yet almost fantasy with its demons and fae like creatures not to mention the possibility of angels . I have a strong dislike unfortunately of characters that seem to be catmint to every male they meet so the way Anya is tangled up didn't really appeal to me but I did enjoy her interactions with Yvan who has the added charm or maybe that's insolence from a certain firebird ! For me the ending was perhaps inevitable but I have to admit there was a shock which left me feeling a little sad.
This voluntary take is if a copy I requested from NetGalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Ashes Of The Firebird by Amy Kuivalainen is book two of the Firebird Faerie Tale series. This series does need to be read in order.

💜 bad 🍑 FMC
💜 found family
💜 forced proximity
💜 mysteries
💜 🌶🌶 spice

This book picks right up where we were left in book one with people scattered. The crew is left trying figure out how to help Anya and is besides themselves with not knowing how to proceed. The Darkness and the Illumination are both trying to figure out next steps as well. Will Anya figure out how to use her magic? Will they win over the Darkness? Who will come out on top?

I enjoyed this book as much I enjoyed the first one. There are so many twists and turns and the mysteries keep piling up. It still keeps me guessing. Again this leaves off in a cliffhanger.

We get to dive right back into Anya's world, without much time passing from book one (so make sure to read it first, or you're going to be very lost). The major battle is drawing closer, but Anya and crew have a lot of recovering and preparing to do before it comes. The story moves along fairly smoothly, but I have to admit I was hoping Anya would've grown a little more by this time. (She still feels a bit childish at times, even with all she's been through to get here). There's plenty of action and twists to keep your heart racing, however, and Kuivalainen's descriptions make it easy to slip into the midst of the action. If you're looking for a unique fantasy that intertwines mythology from around the world, you'll want to grab this!

Ashes of the Firebird by Amy Kuivalainen is the second book in the Firebird Fairy Tales series. The covers of the series, with that magnificent firebird, are one of the best I've seen this year, due to their simplicity and elegance. I hope that the author does not join the fashion of changing the covers since many times instead of improving the presentation of the books, these changes spoil it.
In this book Anya's story continues, along with her new family of magical and supernatural beings. It seems to me that this book is darker than the previous one, Anya has to face losses and disappointments. But at the same time, her family is getting bigger and her allies and herself are getting more powerful.
This is one of those books that the reader does not want to finish reading, but at the same time, the compulsion to know the outcome makes it impossible to stop reading.
A second book full of surprises that will leave the reader wanting more!
I thank the author, BHC Press, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this story. The opinion I have expressed above is based solely on what I think of this book.

Ok so it's a 3.75 points.
I don’t know what to think of this series. I loved the series the magicians of Venice by the author but I am a little lost with this series. The series has a lot of potentials but the fact that the romance is not installed, we have a love triangle, sometimes it seems maybe more, leaves too many questions to really focus on the story. Sometimes I was highly focused on the story and other times I read very quickly to pass the story.
My biggest hope for book three is that Yvan and Anya finally understand that they looooove each other and that they are meant to be

A must read for fans of fantasy and magic!

Even better than the first book. Full of action and magic and a collection of unique characters. Anya is learning and gaining strength, all while tangled up in multitudes of trouble, not all of her own making. I would like to see more of Yvan and his firebird though. I believe he has much more story to contribute. Looking forward to the last book in the trilogy and how it all concludes!

Another amazing series by Amy! Every time I think it can’t possibly get any better I’m proven wrong! I thought that I was going to get put off by the slew of new side characters being introduced but I found myself loving them more than our main protagonists.
That ending has destroyed me though I can’t wait for the next one to come out!!!
