Will could never have predicted how much his life would change when he is knocked from his bicycle by a hit-and-run driver whilst returning home from his work as a psychotherapist. Diagnosed with a concussion, he cancels upcoming client appointments and spends much of the following week in fitful sleep.
When he returns to his practice, something is very weird and very wrong. it seems that the cancelled sessions took place anyway and Will -- or a form of Will -- gave out some radical therapy that was completely out of character for him. What's more, Will finds himself referring to events in his clients' histories of which they themselves have no memory.
The resulting confusion and distress is merely the start of a bizarre unravelling for Will that threatens his livelihood, his marriage and even his sense of self as he finds himself caught up in a curious vortex of shifting realities, at the centre determined to secure Will as her therapist and who seems to know a lot more about his shadowed past than she should.
If you are interested in therapy this novel will be an exciting prospect. But even for me not as fascinated by the dynamics between therapists and their clients, the premise on which the novel is based still quickly drew me in. Sebastian's writing is fluid and readable. The main character Will is well drawn, I felt I got to understand the struggles and frailties that resulted from events in his early life that led to his subsequent dramatic unravelling.
The novel is ambitious in scope both working as a thriller but also as an exploration of the ethical and professional tensions provoked by unresolved issues in a therapist's personal life, often with explosive consequences. A tense but rewarding read.
Beaumont's writing flows beautifully, so much so that I read the book in only two sittings. Drawn in by the dark corners he slowly shines a light on, I found myself longing to know more and more and more. Heart wrenching in parts, funny and strange in others, The Lost Sessions invites you to consider life outside the parameters in which your mind and body is prone to engage with it.
I found reading The Lost Sessions a profound experience, one which I am still absorbing. This is a book I will definitely read again, both as a whole and to revisit different parts, some of which will stay with me forever.
