The untold story of the world’s most infamous sex tape.
Porn, guns, the mob and one very disgruntled electrician – writer Amanda Chicago Lewis traces the story of how the superstar couple’s most intimate moments went global and helped expose the dark side of Internet culture. From the details of the brazen theft to the desperate attempts to shut down the tape, from the millions of dollars the tape made sketchy distributors and to the greed that ultimately destroyed the man who stole the tape, it’s no exaggeration to say that the affair set the stage for the twenty-first century’s obsession with celebrity. Before Kim Kardashian and TMZ, there was Pam and Tommy.
A wild ride through the worlds of fame and the early Internet, PAM & TOMMY reveals a story whose impact and meaning has been misunderstood for years.
For what it is I think it deserves the 3 stars, but this truly makes zero commentary on a pop culture event that is in dire need of exactly that: commentary. It makes more sense now knowing it was originally published in rolling stone in 2014, but this article can be considered more of a Rand Gauthier apology than anything else. I suppose the story was supposed to focus on how the tape was stolen and distributed so focusing more on Gauthier than anyone else makes sense, but alas I am still unhappy with the lack of commentary on Pam’s injustice and the continuous mention of Gauthier and his sad sad life.
Though I was of course aware of the Pam amd Tommy tape, the first celebrity sextape to go viral, I really didn't know the story behind it. This short little book really wraps everything up and explains exactly what happened. Now I guess I'll have to finally watch the series.
i’ve heard about the pam&tommy tape before reading this book, but the story behind it is actually quite interesting, it’s a quick and informative read. definitely recommend.
