3.5 stars!

Touching the Void - Evangeline Priest - 3 stars

This was a steamy and very short read about Vox and Mahal. I have not read Evangeline’s Obsidian Rift universe or her Legion and Intergalactic Republic universes so I honestly had no idea what was happening. Mahal was in like a dream and Vox was able to retrieve her during her awakening without being devoured by wraiths. Felt a little matrix like. Mahal and Vox are soul mates and Vox has waited a long time for his fated mate. Mahal is happy to be with the alien commander and makes good use of his two dicks. There is no cliffhanger and a HFN but we are left with a lot of questions and maybe some lady blue balls.

Sins and Sirens - Clio Evans - Did Not Read - No Rating

I think this was MMM and I prefer MM. However, you can always count on Clio to give you smutty monsters and fated mates.

Darkdream - Vivienne Hart - 4 stars!

"Soon, you'll begin to crave what only I can give you."

Callister is the King of Nightmares and becomes intrigued with Libra who has nightmares of her own. Callister feeds off the fear in people's nightmares but he finds that Libra's sustenance is different. Libra has a past and an evil man after her and Callister makes himself known to her to not only help her but also explore the connection they share. This was smutty and fun and I really would enjoy reading a full length novel about these two. This ends on a HFN but it would be nice to know more about how their future plays out.

Hold My Heart - Dee St. Holm - 3 stars!

This was an interesting one that I wish had had more depth. Anna comes to be a bride to save her family from starvation and her new husband is more than human and also evil. His brother, Enulf, is also trapped in his evil web and it’s up to Anna to save the day. Anna and Enulf have chemistry but there is a curse in their way. This had the potential to be awesome with multi-layered characterizations. Unfortunately, it didn’t get there. I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it either. There was a HEA.

The Dalwick Demon - Ashley Bennet - 4 stars!

Iris gets thrown into a cave for the Dalwick Demon to devour for stealing and being a prostitute and witch. Little does she know this demon isn’t cruel like the townspeople and Selvyn helps the victims tossed into his abyss. But the connection Selvyn and Iris feel for one another is more than friendship. This was sweet and hella steamy. Complete with a HEA.

Light - Atlas Rose - 4.5 stars!

Atlas writes the hottest monster smut. I didn’t really know what was happening here but this is Dregon and Violet’s story. Violet goes with her boyfriend on a trip and realizes her boyfriend is a douche of massive proportions and runs into the woods. This is where she stumbles into Dregon, a creature she doesn’t recognize. They have a steamy steamy encounter and it’s evident they’re fated. This ends on a HFN or maybe it’s a cliffhanger. Either way, I’d love to get more of their story and how they reunited.

Camping Trip - Cassie Alexander - 2.5 - 3 stars!

Lizzy is sick and has a crappy ex boyfriend and steals his car and impales it on a pole. Luckily for Lizzy, she is saved by Reeve and Josiah. They set up a camping site to help her in the morning. But things get hot and heavy and soon Lizzy realizes she may have found her future and that shifters are real. She handled that one pretty well lol. This has MM in it and they’ve been together for a long time. I wasn’t prepared for that. I don’t like MM in my MFM romances because I always feel like the heroine is sidelined. Would loved to have had Reeve or Josiah’s POV and maybe a short epilogue. However, this ends on a HFN. Points deducted because I probably wouldn’t have read it if I’d known there was MM with the MFM.

Lead Me Through the Fire - YD La Mar - Did Not Read - No Rating

Classified as an erotic thriller and that’s not really my thing.

The Night Visitor - S.J Sanders - 3 - 3.5 stars!

Naomi is a witch in trouble and Gralius is drawn to her. He haunts her and Naomi can’t decide if she should be afraid of him or go to him. Not all is what it seems but their unexpected love can save them both. This was a little wordy with descriptions but I enjoyed it. This wasn’t that steamy but given the darkness of the story, it was acceptable lol. The Night Visitor ends with a HEA.

Protecting Keziah - Nova Blake - 3.5 stars!

Keziah leaves her abusive boyfriend and escapes on a work trip. Haunted by nightmares of her ex finding her, Ash appears and gives her the reprieve and affection and devotion she deserves. This was yummy and fun but I wish we had had Ash's POV or a little more about their HEA.

Plucked - Vera Valentine - 4 stars!

Cara has just lost her sister and her grief is almost tangible. Jax, a grief demon, wants to be there for her in more ways than one. This was so short and I wanted more. It ends on a HFN with more possibly coming soon. Really enjoyable.

The Filled Vessel - C.M. Nascosta - 3 stars!

The imagery in this short story was difficult to understand and I honestly didn't really understand any of it. I guess there was a HFN?

Found some new favorites in the darkness

My top story picks for this anthology in no particular order:

💜“Sins and Sirens” Clio Evans

💜“Hold My Heart ” Dee St. Holm

💜 “The Filled Vessel” CM Nascosta

💜“The Dalwick Demon” Ashley Bennett

The timing of this anthology’s publication has been ideal. The “darkness” theme is perfectly suited for the autumn-into-winter time of year as days shorten. I especially recommend this anthology for those who want to explore stories with demons while getting that usual bang for their buck and discovering new authors when it comes to buying up anthologies.

This anthology personally felt rather demon-heavy. I wasn’t surprised by the amount of page time nighttime gets in this anthology. I was surprised perhaps by the emphasis of demon and demon-like characters. In retrospect though, it doesn’t not make sense. Demons aren’t known as creatures of the light. They just aren’t the only creatures associated with darkness.

It was an enlightening reading experience because I’ve discovered I’m not as big of a demon fan as I thought. Does that mean I don’t like demon stories? Hardly!

I did find it interesting I was most excited by “darkness” interpretations like “Hold my Heart” and “Sins and Sirens” which focused on dark environments and characters in the moral as much as physical sense. Also, the creatures in those stories are not demons (trolls and mermaids respectively). I’m probably just a dark romance freak like that so keep that bias in mind as you read this review.

*** Reviewing “FINDING HER MINOTAUR: LOST IN THE LABYRINTH” By Evangeline Priest

Karis de la Cruz foolishly transferred her money to her boyfriend Liam’s cash app as she flew halfway across the country, then took both a bus and a train into New York to discover by text message that he decided to take a break from her and the apartment they would share with friends was off the table now. Homeless and broke, the only contacts she has are Liam’s friends and they think what he did is just fine. As she begins to walk, she sees a man in a hoodie grabbing and arguing with a woman. Karis pulls out a baton type weapon and orders him to get his hands off her. She thinks she sees red eyes and scales for a brief moment, and then he’s just a scruffy guy again who runs away. The woman, Adalyn Wilde, stood there shaking. In gratitude, she invites Karis to join her for lunch before she has to go to work. But her eyes look over Karis’ shoulder and she tells her to RUN! But it is too late and she is grabbed by something she can’t see and everything around her goes dark.

The story has a sci-fi tone while building an unusual world. Karis is pulled into a Labyrinth and her adventure continues from there. Grab your copy and find out what happens to her next. Will she survive in this new world she finds herself in? Will she have any help from Bronn who runs that hub of the Nexus? When Adalyn had tried to call Bronn before she disappeared, he was worried when she didn’t respond. His worry may be what saves Karis’ life, so you won’t want to miss this and the other stories in this Anthology of monsters.

Sins & Sirens by Clio Evans Review:

This dark aquatic tale of sirens and sailors was absolutely perfect.

The chemistry between them, the description of life below the surface, coupled with good mating monsters!? I want more.

Volume two of the Monsters in Love anthology series deals with monsters and their human mates, all linked by some form of darkness. Stories range from sweet to dark and have a wide range of trigger and content warnings, along with many different sorts of monster love interests.

Like the last review in this series, each individual story will have its own rating and the anthology as a whole will be the average of the scores.

* Touching the Void by Evangeline Priest – 5 stars *
Mahal has worked hard her entire life to claw her way up the corporate ladder but lately her dreams have turned into nightmares, she has had trouble sleeping and so she visits the Somni Institute under the guise of a business deal. She hopes they can help her find some peace. Unfortunately for her, the dark creatures in her are very much real. Fortunately for her, she has a sexy mate there to save her.

I was a little torn on this rating, I loved the story, loved that characters, but I felt like it needed a couple more chapters, just to flush a few more things out. Suddenly things were happening and then they weren’t. Just didn’t bother me enough to knock it down. I enjoy this world/universe, ready for more.

* Sins and Sirens by Clio Evans – 4 stars *
I love Clio and I was excited to come into this story. Matt is a fisherman and the boat he is on has encountered a storm. Not just any storm, a storm created by the mate of the Merman his fellow crewmates have accidentally caught and now holding captive. Matt rescues Delphin and in return he isn’t eaten, he is mated and swept away to this underwater world where the merfolk want to eat him and Delphin and Delphin’s other mate Aegaeon want to devour him in a different way.

The merfolk men are different and very cool, but on the whole it felt a little lackluster and rushed, all spice and no bread. But the spice was very good, like very good. I was just expecting and hoping for a little more, just a little, not much. But if you like two fancy peens on two monsters, this story has got you covered.

* Darkdream by Vivienne Hart – 5 stars *
Libra had a rough life before she came to Haven’s Hollow. A life full of abuse at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. A boyfriend she helped send to prison before she disappeared and made a life for herself in the small town. Now she owns a bakery and is just a badass. Unfortunately, and badassery aside, she has been suffering a lot of nightmares lately. Mostly because Callister is the King of Nightmares and hers are particularly delicious.

I really liked the first story in this series and I really really liked this one. Callister is a unique love interest who says he doesn’t understand when she confronts him about his actions. He respects her and comes to her rescue. It was also very sweet and super sexy. Up until this point in the anthology, it’s definitely the favorite. I really wish it was longer, I want more of this couple, so much more.

* Hold my Heart by Dee St. Holm – 5 stars *
This is what happens when you take the bluebeard fairytales and insert trolls. It was an interesting take on a fairytale that a lot of people don’t do. Surely it was intended, since the author goes as far as to mention the color of the lord’s beard as being blue, though there isn’t anywhere that specifically mentions the original story. I really enjoyed it, even if I didn’t really enjoy Anna. She was naïve in a way that made me want to slap her. Then it all sort of turned around, she found her voice and I was on board with her.

The ending was satisfying, even though the smutty bits seemed awkwardly placed in there and were there to fit the requirements of the anthology. Now! Don’t get me wrong, it was fantastic (the two scenes) but it felt cheesy.

* The Dalwick Demon by Ashley Bennett – 5 stars *
A new author in this volume that was not in the last and she did not disappoint! I love when I am able to find someone new to read.

Iris is a whore, literally. Her parents are dead and she has to do what she has to do to survive. One night she is dragged from bed, accused and convicted of prostitution, stealing, and witchcraft and sentenced to be sacrificed to the Demon of Dalwick. They drag her through the cold night and toss her down into the pit where the demon is said to live. Instead of dying then and there, she lands on a soft pile of moss and leaves. Selvyn is the Demon of Dalwick and he thought he finally was rid of this silliness. He is nothing like Iris had imagined, he’s kind, he doesn’t eat people, and he’s not even a demon; he’s actually a cambion.

I loved this story, it is so sweet and so perfect. The pet names are to die for, so much to swoon for. “Angel”, “Fallen Angel”, and “my flower”…just please give me an entire book of them. I couldn’t get enough.

* Light by Atlas Rose – 2 stars *
I was honestly a little apprehensive going into this story. I wasn’t a fan of this author’s story in the last anthology but I am a firm believer in three chances before I completely say I don’t like an author (with exceptions obviously, there is never a black and white). I liked this one a bit more, but still not that much.

Is this the first part of a larger story or just an incomplete story? There is not happy every after or even a happily for not. It just ends. The conflict isn’t resolved. The “couple” isn’t reunited. It just stops. If it is a larger story and this is only the first few chapters, I really wish there was a warning at the beginning. If it’s not then it’s just incomplete and that’s meh too.

Violet is kind of an idiot, she spends six years with a walking red flag and is convinced her dirtbag boyfriend is going to propose. He makes her load all the stuff and takes her camping, which she doesn’t even like to do, and she is still convinced he is going to propose. Then his best friend and his girlfriend show up, the girlfriend who is her own boyfriend’s ex.

So camping, Michael makes her unload the truck on her own, then goes off into the woods with whatsherfacedon’tevencare and come back, girl is wiping her mouth and her hair is messy and doesn’t event think something is up. Then she finds out they wanted a foursome with her. She runs off into the woods, gets hurt and found by weird darkness mothman or bird type creature, there was no real description. Convinces herself she is dreaming or something, then when she realizes she isn’t freaks out and goes back with douchebag boyfriend. It was a mess.

I will say though, over all the writing was better than The Den, it flowed better and I wanted to like it. I might have if it was a full story.

* Camping Trip by Cassie Alexander – 5 stars *
The least monstery of the monster romances.

Lizzy just found out she has cancer and to top it all off, her boyfriend is as asshat, so she leaves him and takes his car with her. Unfortunately, she crashes it into a sign and gets stranded. Luckily for her, to very nice (and very hot) men find her and offer her a place to stay for the night. Reeve and Josiah are spending a few nights camping and let her stay with them so they can deal with her car in the morning.

Jo and Reeve are a couple and Lizzy decides one last big hoorah before the cancer gets too much is a great idea. Jo and Reeve have other plans. It’s so sweet and so sexy. They save her in more than one way and I just love that. I could have a whole series with these three characters and be perfectly content and happy.

I am slightly bias, I love wolves, but they really are the least monstery of the bunch since all the spice happens in their human forms. However, luckily not all of them is human. I do love me a good knot, which these boys have. More please?

* Lead me Through the Fire by Y D La Mar – 3 stars*
Another new author and unfortunately this one didn’t quite do it for me. The premise was interesting. Benji grew up with an abusive mother and it is heavily implied he killed her at some point. Now he is a patient at an unnamed institution. It is also implied that he is putting up an act after self-admitting, he gets food, clothes, a place to sleep and yeah. Unfortunately, he has been plagued with nightmares and they have bled into the waking world or at least that’s how it seems. Astar is the demon on his shoulder, invading other people to mess with him and feeding off him in different ways.

The premise was good. It was described as a thriller-romance but honestly it didn’t feel like a romance to me at all. It felt like a horror with smut added in only because it was needed for the anthology. I mean it was good, the writing was good, but it fell flat. There was no romance for me, no happily ever after for me. It was implied, sort of, I guess. But it was all so flat. Perhaps with a longer word count more could have been done.

* The Night Visitor by S.J. Sanders – 5 stars *
S.J. Sanders is probably one of my favorite authors that have been featured in these anthologies. This is by far one of my favorite stories in this one, it’s also a fairly unique story. I really hope she is planning on expanding on this one, I will buy it the moment it is released if she does.

Naomi is a witch who has been suffering from terrible nightmares. Every night a terrifying demon comes into her dreams and torments her. Only that’s not what Gralius is doing. He loves her and she is the one who called him to her. Her dreams get worse and he needs her to remember things so she can be free of them.

There is so much to say about this one, but doing so will give away the story. It was fabulous and while I guessed it fairly early on, discovering it was still fun. So good. Would give more stars if possible.

* Protecting Keziah by Nova Blake – 4 stars *
Connected to Nova Blake’s story in the last anthology, this story focuses on Keziah, a domestic abuse survivor just trying to break free fully from her ex. She goes to the big work event trying to get her life back together and fix her reputation. But, being far away from Karl unfortunately doesn’t stop the nightmares. Her first night there, she frees Ash and he visits her nightmares and then her room to give her a lovely time.

This story was great, I enjoyed it more than her last one, unfortunately it was way too short and felt rushed at the end. It ended suddenly and there wasn’t enough romance. But I still give it four stars because three is just too few for how much I did like it. If it were longer, it probably would have been another five story.

* Plucked by Vera Valentine – 5 stars *
This story had such a long list of content warnings I wasn’t sure what to expect but oh my goodness was it amazing. It dealt with death and grief in such interesting ways, while also giving it a love story and a monstery interest. Cara just lost her sister, the insurance won’t pay out and she has been forced to get a job at the mortuary to pay for her sister’s burial. Jax is a grief demon who is under the control of the slimy owner. With touches of BDSM and a lot of “good girl” I was completely enthralled, it was done so well. There is talk of consent, going too far and just enough elements to satisfy my need for it in this setting. I loved this story. Typing this review after finishing the whole book, this one was the top favorite. It was so good.

* The Filled Vessel by C.M. Nascosta – 5 stars *
After doing a ritual to gain clarity and open her third eye, Tara actually summons a demon, an incubus. Or at least that what it would have been if Corviss wasn’t filling in while the incubus was on vacation. He dips into her mind to feed from her nightmares while also fulfilling his duty as a stand-in incubus.

It was a sexy story, I wouldn’t call it a romance in traditional sense, it has a sorta happy ending I guess. It’s different but not bad different. Clearly I enjoyed it and I definitely enjoyed it more than her story in the first anthology.

You Can't Get There From Here by C Rochelle

This is a great bite-sized monster treat! I was pulled into a world that I cannot wait to see more of! How could I not love a story where one of our very own monster smut reading heauxs gets a real life monster of her own! C Rochelle also managed to work some great humor into the story along with a delcious amount of spice. I haven't read the other stories just yet but from the line up of authors in this anthology I just know I am going to enjoy it!

Monsters in Love Anthology is a collection of stories by various authors. It’s a monstrously huge collection with submissions from more than 30 authors!!! This anthology has something for everyone!! There’s sweet, touching, steamy, grouchy, romantic, possessive….you name it….it’s probably here! Hours and hours of romantic monster reads!!! Every kind of monster you can think of…fae, orcs, aliens, even dragons!!

Perhaps my favorite story was The Clingy Summon by Daisy Shell, which is the monstrous story of Meira and Cutarr. Cutarr is a secret fae. Meira is a witch. They’ve been writing each other while she’s in school. He has secret knowledge….that she doesn’t know. She performs a summoning. This story ends in a cliffhanger….

Another anthology with an entry from my favorite author, C.M. Nascosta. I have only read her entry, and it was delicious.

This had a much more sinister vibe than most of her stuff. But that just goes to show me that she can do it all! The idea of someone thinking that can help you overcome your daytime fears by making you terrified in your nightmares is outrageous. And yet, it totally works. I have so many questions about Holt and the rest of the characters that are mentioned in the shop. Maybe we'll see more of them soon. Holt could totally move his devious ass to Cambric Creek. :)

so good

I loved most of the stories in this collection. It also shows that the most horrible monsters are human and sometimes to find true love you just need to embrace traditional monsters. Some of the stories are darker than others and some have enough steam to keep you warm throughout the winter.

So far I have read each anthology and enjoyed all of them. There's usually one story I dont get into as much, more so because it's just not hitting me right than bad writing or anything. Still I enjoy this anthology series and look forward to the next installment.

Read The Filled Vessel by CM Nascosta: The story of a wannabe witch in Cambric Creek whose sleep paralysis demon falls in love with her while covering for an incubus. This is so much darker than I’m usually into, and somehow delightful at the same time. And smutty as hell. Plus SUCH an accurate portrayal of sleep paralysis almost hit too close to home. 4/5 stars
